Robin Sax of the Woman in Crime Ink offered up her Top Criminal Cases for 2008 in their Year in Review. Some of the cases reviewed and most likely discussed this evening will be Caylee Anthony, O.J. Simpson, Clark Rockefeller, Vince Weiguang Li and the Canada bus murder, Eve Carson, the Texas Polygamist Ranch and many more.
Scared Monkeys has covered many of these stories as well in 2008 and many more including the on going story of the disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba. 2008 proved to be rather interesting and bizarre as one time suspect in Natalee’s disappearance Joran Van der Sloot admitted not once, but twice during the year of his involvement in the crime only to recant and state he was lying. In an interview he actually admitted to kidnapping and human trafficking of Natalee Holloway. Then, like clockwork he said he was lying.
Tune in tonight for a great year in review.
Grisly Autopsy Report of Murdered UNC Student Body President Eve Carson Killed After Shot Multiple Times
The heinous murder of Eve Carson, the popular president of UNC’s student
body shocked the campus of Chapel Hill and the country earlier this year. Her body was found on March 5, 2008 the intersection of Hillcrest Drive and Hillcrest Circle. Original reports stated that she died of multiple gun shots to the head.
Some three months later, the autopsy of Eve Carson is being made public. The autopsy states that Eve Carson was shot 5 times. One thing is for certain after reading the autopsy reports, NC should bring back the firing squad or hanging for the two suspects, Demario Atwater and Lawrence Lovett Jr., who committed the crime. NC may want to think about a public stoning. Both are charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Eve Carson.
Carson’s autopsy report lists six gunshot wounds, but says two were probably from the same bullet, according to North Carolina’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Her autopsy — released after a North Carolina newspaper filed a court motion to have it unsealed — describes wounds to various parts of Carson’s body. It says shotgun wounds to her head and hand “most likely represent a single shot with the hand acting as an intermediate target.”
One of the other four wounds was also a gunshot to her head.
A separate, handwritten summary of the medical examiner’s report says Carson was “shot multiple times” and found lying on her back, with one arm bent behind her head.
The autopsy says sexual assault testing was done. It does not say whether any sign of sexual assault was found.
Why did they have to kill her? The whole incident was about a robbery. The two suspects abducted and kidnapped Eve Carson and forced her to give them access to her ATM account where they withdrew $1400 over a two day period. Eve Carson’s final minutes are documented HERE.

Lawrence Alvin Lovett (Lovette) Jr. & Demario James Atwater Charged in the Murder of UNC Coed Eve Carson
Two people have been charged in the senseless murder of UNC coed Eve Carson. 21 year old Demario James Atwater of Durham, NC and 17 year old Lawrence Alvin Lovett Jr. They have both been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Eve Carson. The are still searching for Lovette.
They walk among us … As it turns out, both Atwater and Lovett have criminal pasts and have previously been convicted of felonies. Why are we not surprised? Charge then and then let them loose on an unsuspecting public so that persons like Eve Carson, with all the promise and hopes, who represent the best of our young people are murdered.
Eve Carson murder suspects Demario Atwater and Lawrence Lovett Jr.
Authorities have arrested a second suspect in the murder of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student body president Eve Carson. 17 year old Lawrence Alvin Lovette Jr. was arrested
Lovette, 17, surrendered without incident after four hours, Durham
police Lt. Robert McLaughlin Jr. said.
He is the second man police were looking for in their investigation into Carson’s death.
Police released surveillance-camera photos from an ATM last week. The photographs showed a young man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and baseball cap possibly using one of Carson’s ATM cards, police said. The pictures showed a shape that police said appeared to be a second person in the back seat of the vehicle, which may have been Carson’s SUV.
Chapel Hill Police Chief Brian Curran told reporters they believe Lovette was driving the car in the ATM photos and Atwater was in the back seat. (CNN)
2nd suspect arrested in UNC student’s slaying
According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections Web site, both suspects have criminal pasts. Atwater has been convicted of two felonies, including possession of a firearm by a felon, and Lovett was found guilty of misdemeanor breaking and entering and larceny in January.
Thanks in part to two sets of surveillance camera photos released by authorities, police received hundreds of tips from the community. The photos were taken when someone tried to use Carson’s ATM card — police say they show Lovett at a drive-up teller machine, and Atwater at a convenience store.

Police Release Pictures/Photo of Suspect at ATM in the Murder of UNC Coed Eve Carson
Could this be the lead that breaks the case of the murder of UNC’s Eve Carson? Eve Carson died from multiple gun shot wounds near campus. Her SUV was later found. Did the suspect in Eve Carson’s death actually drive her SUV to an ATM and use her ATM bank cards? Did he do this before or after he killed her?
The police have released two photos of a suspect in the murder of 22 year old University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill coed Eve Carson. The pictures show the suspect, a black man in his teens or early 20’s in an SUV that may be Eve Carson’s, pulling up to an ATM.

Chief Brian Curran described the photos as “the biggest break” and “strongest lead” in the case yet.
Two photographs show a black man in his late teens or early 20s. He is riding in a sport-utility vehicle with a roof rack that might have been Carson’s. Officers emphasized they did not definitively know if the vehicle belonged to Carson.
A third photograph shows a green ball cap with an orange star that the man was wearing.
The photographs were taken by a camera at an automated-teller machine, but Curran did not disclose when and where they were taken. Those questions, he said, would be reserved for when police questioned the suspect.
Anyone with any information or if you recognize this thug in the pictures please call police at 919-968-2760 or Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515 if they think they have information that might help.

Lauren Burk was found suffering from a gunshot wound on the side of a road near campus Tuesday night. She died later a hospital. Today, authorities announced that 23 year old Courtney Lockhart was arrested and has been charged with capital murder in death of Auburn freshman Lauren Burk.
We have consistently posed the question … why are these people allowed to walk among us? Why does it take career scum bags and thugs to kill before we take their actions serious? The end result is the senseless death of Lauren Burk, a life taken far too soon.

“We have the right individual in jail,” said Tommy Dawson, assistant chief of Auburn police department. “I’m 100 percent sure of that.” Kudos to law enforcement on their diligence and speed to apprehend this menace to society. Let’s hope their is a needle in his future.
Specifically Lockhart is charged with capital murder during a kidnapping; capital murder during a robbery; and capital murder during an attempted rape, according to a police statement.
Lockhart was arrested in Phenix City Friday after a high-speed chase.
According to WRBL News 3, Lockhart admitted to investigators that he committed at least five armed robberies in the area in recent weeks.
In addition, Lockhart is wanted in connection with an attempted carjacking and armed robbery in Newnan, Ga., Friday morning, the Newnan Times-Herald reported today.
He faces charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault, kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, the Times-Herald reported.

UPDATE I: Suspect, Courtney Lockhart, Charged in Auburn Student’s Killing Could Face Death Penalty
Could? What do you mean could? The man is charged with capital murder during a kidnapping, a robbery; and an attempted rape. What other charges are necessary for having a needle applied to Lockhart’s arm, sodomy, and driving without a license? If there was ever a candidate for the death penatly, Courtney Lockhart is it. He is a career thug with no purpose in life except to have his right to life taken away.

Comments from the Governor of Georgia, Sonny Perdue, regarding the tragic murders of Lauren Burk and Eve Carlson:
“Mary and I are deeply saddened by the senseless, tragic murders of these two bright and talented Georgians,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “We are praying for their families and friends as well as the campuses and communities that are mourning these painful losses. Georgia is Lauren and Eve’s home state and we will do everything we can to help authorities in Alabama and North Carolina pursue, capture and convict those responsible for their deaths. To aid in these investigations, I have asked GBI Director Vernon Keenan to offer any and all assistance necessary to solve these crimes.”
Eve Marie Carson at University of North Carolina & Lauren Burk of Auburn Murdered
What is going on in our college campuses? In both senseless murders, did the victims know their murderer? First, 18-year-old Auburn University freshman Lauren A. Burk of Marietta, GA was murdered on Tuesday night near campus. Lauren Burk was fatally shot with a single gunshot to her head where she later died that night after being taken to the hospital. Police say that they have many good leads; however, are being tight lipped beyond that. From the Auburn University web site …

To Lauren’s sorority sisters, we pray for you who were extended sisters to her. Lauren will remain special in our memory, and so many of you are already working on ways to commemorate her.
