Amigoe: Ahata: Briesen should be better advised
As we reported yesterday, AHATA, placed a full page ad stating they are “disappointed in the statements of minister Edison Briesen (MEP) of Tourism and Transport.”
The minister said recently that everybody should stop putting into their head that there is a crisis in the Aruban tourism, because that’s not the case. Ahata is of the opinion that Briesen must let himself be advised better, because the facts are clear: “in comparison with competing islands, we are doing badly.”
Edison Briesen may be in line to becoming the next Baghdad Bob. Must be nice to be surrounded by “yes” men. Makes one feel important, but hardly effective or informed. Minister Briesen, your tourism is terrible. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) tourism has done well in the Caribbean exceeding the global growth average by 5.1 percent. Everyone except you. Aruba is on pace with Uruguay.
On November 2nd, Briesen said in a press conference that the tourism figures have dropped a little, but not alarming. Compared with June of 2005, all the branches of tourism in Aruba have dropped considerably in same period 2006. Only the passengers coming to Aruba by air have increased with 2 percent. Where is the crisis then?
(Animal House, Chip Diller: “Remain calm. All is well!”)
You can deny the fact all you want, the lack of tourists on your island is obvious. The lack of money in Arubans pockets will be obvious too come election time. How difficult can it possibly be for one to admit there is a problem in Aruba with tourism? Lying to Americans and a family about an investigation of Natalee Holloway is one thing, but misinforming and misrepresenting fact to your own people?

Tourism Down, Inflation Up in Aruba according to the Central Bank of Aruba for September 2006
The Central Bank of Aruba has posted its monthly report for September 2006; even though the report mentions that the information about the number of sojourn tourists and the number of days they stayed is not yet available for the months of August and September, conveniently enough. However, here is the damaging information that they report does mention.
- The average inflation pace on a yearly basis was also 4.1 percent, which means an acceleration of 0.9 percent point compared with same period a year ago.
- price index figure for the family consumption in September was 4.1 percent higher that in September of 2005
- The number of sojourn tourists and the number of days they stayed has dropped with respectively 10.2 and 7.2 percent in the first seven months of this year.
- According to CBS, the room occupancy of the hotels show a drop of 2.5 to 66.6 percent for September, compared with last year.

Queens Visit to Aruba: If you Can’t Make it Safe for the Queen … Who Can You Make it Safe For?
Atan Lee, former head Protocol, seems to think that the upcoming Queen’s visit to Aruba in not safe. Which begs the question … if Aruba takes liberties with the Queens’s safety, what would they do with everyone else’s? Arubans and tourists alike.
Besides, Plaza Daniel Leo is not safe; it is surrounded by high-rise. A person can easily commit an assault on the Queen’s life.
Plaza Daniel Leo is unsafe for Royal visit”, indicated Atan Lee, former head Protocol.
Atan Lee also touches on what seems to be a definite rift and existing problem between The Dutch and Aruba. As seen with the “guaranteed loan” squabble that is presently going on, Lee makes the comment that, “You don’t get a feeling that the island is celebrating.” Let’s just hope the Queen stays away from certain bars in Aruba. They may pose more of a safety issue than Plaza Daniel Leo.
Preservation of the Joint Court of Justice & Lady Justice in Aruba
Some stories just write themselves. The future of Lady Justice being discussed in Aruba. That is to presume that it has a present. One would also presume they could begin with “Justice for Natalee”.
ARUBA – A majority of the representatives of politics and the Bar that were present at the symposium ‘The development of the current magistrature within the Caribbean part of the Royal Dutch Kingdom’ appeared to be advocates of the preservation of the Joint Court of Justice.
Then there is Justice Minister Rudy Croes’ opinion.
KLM Dutch passenger faces jail time for abusive behavior … “set an example and to clarify the boundaries of good manners in Aruba”
Seems that this Dutch individual will be going to jail. Maybe if the three suspects had done what they did with Natalee Holloway that fateful night after Carlos N’ Charlies on a plane instead of Deepak Kalpoe’s car things might be different.
And now for the classic line of the week:
The OM (District Attorney) asked for this sentence to set an example and to clarify the boundaries of good manners in Aruba.
Would appear that maybe “good manner” might pertain to some other actions that take place on Aruba on a usual basis, dont you District Attorney?
