Below is a rather interesting editorial regarding Aruba and why one person 
chooses never to vacation there. This person states many reasons why they would not travel to Aruba. That is what Aruba has missed in this entire sorted event. No amount of marketing changes one’s opinion or perception. Few times does anyone get a second chance to make a first impression. Aruba has had many chances and failed miserably every time.
Being a victim of a crime or losing a loved one is bad enough. However, when the very island (Aruba) where one would spend their hard earned money on a vacation blame you for the disappearance of your loved one and treats a victim like a suspect , one should take pause to put that location at the top of the list of places never to travel to.
Aruba has been told over and over that the boycott on their island is like no other. It is not an official boycott declared by a country or a state. In many ways its worse. Its a grass roots movement done by John Q. Public, “We the People”. Aruba has become synonymous with missing persons stories, not because of the number of ones that occur but because of the manner in how they went about solving the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. Hey Aruba, ever heard of Scotch Tape? Its not a product, it’s a brand … Aruba, you have been branded.

In regards to The Forum’s travel section Jan. 20 on Aruba:
I am sorry to say that when I am looking for a place to vacation, it will not be Aruba/the Dutch island. Sure, it is warm and tropical but after the Natalee Holloway fiasco, I would not step foot in this country no matter how beautiful or warm it is.
Aruba is one of the hot spots for human trafficking. Child prostitution in Aruba has increased in the past five years from 4,000 to 15,000 children. I would not feel safe taking my two teenage daughters to a country that does not care about children and does little to stop sex crimes involving children. (Legal Prostitution in Aruba and Escort Services advertised in free Tourist news papers delivered to the hotels)

This country wants to lower the age of youth/adult consent from 16 to 12 years old so pedophiles have even greater access to children. I realize that our own country as well as others exploit children; however, Aruba has chosen to look the other way. CNN reported that Aruba has a dark side, “an island ruled by Colombian drugs (And HERE) and Latin prostitutes.” (One might include mob ties as well)

The brand is well-known for its good performance in the United States and Europe. Does this sound like a great place to vacation? Countless individuals such as the governor of Alabama and even Dr. Phil have chosen to boycott Aruba. Add my name to that list. Maybe if their tourism dollars suffer, they will look closer at their lack of human rights involving children. If you ever get a chance, watch the documentary, “Human Trafficking” on Lifetime.
I will be much more careful with my girls in foreign countries. Many girls in particular have been snatched while on vacation. I am not willing to take that chance by going to Aruba.

The probelme is their laws are dutch laws and as you know EVERYTHING is legal in Holland. That just doesn’t work in Aruba and that’s why there is more and more crime there…Having sex with minors in Aruba is no big deal and I personally feel like it’s actually encouraged…Makes me sick.
SM: Can you do an article about healthcare in Aruba? Are the doctors leaving? I was told by a medical sales rep that covers the islands that he no longer travels to Aruba because they never have money to buy new equipment.
A new angle is that Americans are less likely to travel to a place if they know the medical care is substandard. If this is the case on Aruba and there is evidence that the physicians are leaving and they are not updating equipment, Americans should have this information.
As an EMT, I can tell you that the ambulance coverage, training of ambulance staff (EMT or Paramedics), hospital, hospital staff all factor into whether or not I visit a place.
In Canada, for example, the best medical care in the pre-hospital setting is Alberta and Ontario. Among the worst are British Columbia and Quebec. Alberta and Ontario have paramedics on every truck. British Columbia only has 12 paramedic trucks out of over 400 and they are in the city of Vancouver. If you are outside Vancouver, you are SOL if you have a life threatening event.
It’s just a guess but I would bet that Aruba has very inferior pre-hospital care as in very few paramedics, their equipment is bad, and there hospital equipment is bad too!

It is also pretty near impossible to sue for negligence in Aruba when doctors commit malpractice. That is what happens when one has a state sponsored health care system.
Hint … Hint America … Universal Health care is a nightmare.

If a tourist has a heart attack while on vacation in Aruba, flying to Miami is not an option. Patients must be initially treated and stabilized before transport. This is the reason it is critically important to know a bit of background on a place before traveling there.
A friend of my dad’s was traveling in Greece and got hit by a motorbike while crossing the street. He nearly died there! His daughter came for him and there were pigeons in his hospital room! FLYING RATS!
It’s just a guess but I would bet Aruba is no better and people should know what they are in for in the event of an emergency. A variety of accidents can happen and aside from putting on a bandaid, people should care about the level of treatment they will receive while visiting Aruba.
Poor medical care and equipment is usually one of the first affects of an economic boycott.
At this point I am finished feeling sorry for people who continue to visit Aruba after the Holloway cover up, blaming the victim, crucifying the parents.
These people make me sick and they should make every American stand up and take a stand against Aruban tourism!
I will not ever step foot on that “hellhole” either! Why vacation on a poverty stricken, drug infested, third world, human trafficking, lawless Dutch protectorate like Aruba when there’s so many other beautiful, safe places to spend your hard earned American dollar? Makes no sense to me…

SM: I have seen first hand the results the workings of the Aruban health care system. I saw a woman who broke her arm go to the Aruban hospital and have her arm set. They set ir wrong and put her in a cast. 6 weeks later they took the cast off and saw their mistake. The medical result … they had to re-break her arm and reset it. No law suit allowed for the negligence.
Trust me, Michael Moore would never go to the hospital there. And if you actually believe MM and the movie SICKO has anything to teach us I really fear for whoever employees you. MM cares nothing about health care rather than exploiting stories for profit, you are are a naive fool. MM is a profiteer. Nothing “moore”, nothing less.

Here’s an example. Today I went to Ace Hardware instead of a home center store. Why? BECAUSE I KNEW I’D GET HELP AT ACE IF I NEEDED IT. At the home center store, I haven’t always been able to. Now when you’re talking about lives, not screws and hammers, you don’t have to think long before making a decision.
Hey GB: I heard that there were insufficient funds for your medical assistance programs; with full scaled cutbacks and your hospital cannot afford even the basic essentials anymore.

Just got back from Aruba and had a WONDERFUL time. I must say if anyone is boycotting the island I did not noticed. Our planes going and coming back were booked. The airport and all the hotels were crowded.
One thing I noticed here is that people keep aying they will boycott the island and not spend any American money there etc. The island gets quite a few European an South American visitors, so I don’t think a few americans boycotting the place is going to make much of a difference. Stay home and boycott more room for me to go back and visit.

ORANJESTAD, Aruba (AP) — Workers returned on Monday to an oil refinery where a key unit caught fire last week, but there was no word on when operations would resume at the 275,000-barrels-a-day plant on the southern tip of Aruba.
Valero Energy Corp.’s refinery on the southern Caribbean island was temporarily out of service following a blaze Friday that started in a vacuum unit, according to a spokesman for the San Antonio-based refiner.
“We do have some units running, but there is no production,” spokesman Bill Day said by telephone, adding the U.S. company does not know when full operations will resume.
Day said the area where the blaze sparked was not yet accessible to fire investigators. There were no injuries reported.
The Aruba plant processes heavy, sour crude which is cheaper than the light, sweet variety to produce a high yield of finished distillate products and feedstock marketed in the U.S. Gulf Coast, Florida, the New York Harbor and the Caribbean.
Valero, the largest independent oil refiner in the United States, bought the Aruba plant in 2004.

There are white women that go missing every day all over the world, balck ones, asian ones, you name. Violence against women, regardless of race, is a reality.
There is one single reason the Holloway case has remained in the news. It’s because Natalee’s parents, and step parents, worked like dogs to find her, keep it in the news, raise awareness, raise money….. you name it.
Actually, there are secondary reasons why Natalee has captured the attention of the media like no other.
1) She was a straight A student on her way to college on full academic scholarship.
2) She was beautiful and innocent
3) The primary accused is the son of a “Judge in training”
4) The obvious cover ups in this case scream of injustice and Americans respond when one of their own suffers this type of injustice.
Natalee Holloway, if she is not found, will continue to grow in importance in death. This case will not abate by any means. If she is found, she will receive a proper burial but those who follow this case will never let up on the boycott of that skanky little island the size of a pea until justice is served, one way or the other.
Not to change the subject but is anyone still concerned about “Aruban” divers? I just don’t trust them. Hey…. That would never happen in a great country like the USA. Never has an innocent woman died and the justice system not prevailed here. I, OJ Simpson, am proof of that. That would be wrong anywhere and if any government or legislation allowed that.
Sorry folks but I have to disagree. I actually am glad none of you people are ever coming to Aruba because we hate people like you spreading trash about a great island. Been there for 20 years – people are great, island is one of the safest in all of the Carribean, food is excellent etc. Unfortunate that one instance is enought to give an entire islands economy a black eye. Not blaming anyone but anything can happen anywhere you travel. Chaperones have a job to do and obviously they weren’t doing it. Looks like this was a tragic event that could have been avoided if #1 friends looked out for one another when traveling to unfamilar places. #2 legal guardians did their job to protect and look out for young adults like they were supposed to. Aruba doing a poor job handling the case has more to do with them never having to deal with something of this magnitude than being difficult. Have fun on your trips to the garbage islands and watch your back. Aruba is one of the finest and I will spend thousands there every year to support them. I’ll be going there on Sunday for three weeks – I’ll buy a few cocktails for you when I’m there. Peace.

Instead, you just sat by and wanted tourists to come to your island.
The fact of the matter is that to this day, no one that goes to Aruba or ever contemplates going there should ever feel comfort or expect the police, the LE, the courts, the government or the people to do the right theng when God forbid “something bad happens”.
Those are the cold hard facts.
How many crimes are never reported so that tourists are kept in the dark?
Please dont be ignorant and compare a country with 30 million people to one with barely 100K and that is advertized as a safe vacation spot. Obviously it cannot be considered safe. We would ask Natalee, but she is no longer with us.
