Aruban Shop Owners Shot in Leg During Hold Up, One Happy Island

Amigoe, July 25, 2007: Supermarket owners shot in the leg during a hold-up     Handgun

Three armed and masked men held up  the  Famia Supermarket, shot the owners in the leg and took off with their spoils. According to reports, 2 of the 3 suspects have been arrested. There is no truth to the rumor that the Aruban police first arrested 2 black security guards before actually arresting those responsible for the crime … One Happy and Safe Island.

ORANJESTAD – A Chinese supermarket in Mabon was attacked with a weapon last night.   The two owners were shot in the leg during the hold-up.

The incident took place around 22:00.   Three armed persons with masks entered the building of Famia Supermarket and demanded the contents of the cash register.   When, according to them this didn’t happen fast enough, they shot on the owners.   One of the owners also received a blow in the face.   The attackers then left the building without the booty and disappeared in the bushes.

The police patrol from San Nicolas, Sta. Cruz, and Oranjestad and the police helicopter searched the area for the attackers.   The police arrested two suspects; the third one is still being looked for.

The owner of the supermarket and his wife were taken to the medical center in San Nicolas for treatment.

It is really a shame, but an increase in criminality and violence is easily perceived from just looking at some of the newspapers published in Aruba. It’s definitely time for the people of Aruba to demand greater safety and an increase effort to implement programs of crime control and prevention that will better protect the community. Atraco is now a word quite familiar just from reading seeing it almost every day in headlines and articles published in Solo di Pueblo, 24 Ora and Diario Aruba:

      … ATRACO cometi riba e comerciante…

      … a bira victima di ATRACO, maltrato y secuestro…

      Ladronicia, ATRACO…

Un ATRACO serio a keda raporta…

All right, Aruba is not the safest place to visit during your lifetime, we get that.

But Hold Up’s and robberies happen all the time, everywhere.

      Good thing, nobody died here.

The witness wasn’t the guy they found in the ocean, or was he?

I suppose they will also blame Beth for the robbery.

Don’t suppose P of the Ditch and the Kalpoes are going into business together these days ….

Wonder why they took off without the money, if they went to the trouble of shooting people? Chollers, perhaps ….

Maybe the Aruban police will figure out that the Chinese owners shot each other in the leg to collect on insurance.

    11. Richard on July 26th, 2007 3:53 pm

They “disappeared in the BUSHES”? Uh … then what? Did they go down a rathole or something?

Must have been those American tourists, since there’s no crime on Aruba.

    12. Miss-Underestimated on July 26th, 2007 4:21 pm

Ya think the robberies are to pay for Joe T’s fees?

    13. mayan_moons on July 26th, 2007 4:32 pm

lmao Richard “do they fall into a rathole or something”! Sure seems that way don’t it! The rathole blackhole….opens up & nobody knows nuttin about it.

    14. mayan_moons on July 26th, 2007 4:34 pm

ii thought joe was pro bono Miss U! lol

whats the running total on the fund for Jipshit website?

    15. Susan on July 26th, 2007 5:38 pm

Crime on Aruba? Ya gotta be kiddin’, right?

Miss-U, Whatever happened to Joe Taco Pineapple so graciously defending Urine “pro bono”? If that were the case there’d be no need for the thugs to lower themselves to robberies. Then again, Joey changed directions in mid-stream…

    16. dennisintn on July 26th, 2007 5:40 pm

#l0, i believe you may have it right there, richard. a lot less trouble than trying to run down chollers who disappear in the bushes. call it an insurance scam, and don’t enter it into the records as a violent crime. keeps those pesky crime statistics from upsetting anyone. plus, the hotel owners would get upset because tourists might get the idea they’d be exposed to being in the middle of gunfights and not bring their money down the the happy island.

    17. katablog on July 26th, 2007 8:13 pm

A helicopter? WTF, No F-16 fly overs? Hey things are picking up in Aruba, at least these victims didn’t end up dead from suicide! We’ll probably hear about the insurance scam they were committing later.

    18. Brie on July 26th, 2007 8:52 pm

All the supermarkets are owned by the Chinese. Welcome to the Happy and Safe Island of Aruba.!!!! Compliments of Paulus and Joran Van der Sloot! Don’t worry Paulus will do the paper work for you!!!!!

    19. Brie on July 26th, 2007 9:16 pm

The Dutch have been worried for some time that they will lose the island of Aruba to drugs, crime and corruption. The cartels, the immigrants(people unemployed), money laundering, the drug haven island of paradise. Joran and Paulus have brought alot of attention to the island of Aruba. You took the lip off the candy jar. I’m sure they are those that wish to thank you personally. So long SLOOT POOPS!

    20. Richard on July 26th, 2007 9:34 pm

Brie … This being the case, as we all know that it is (precisely as you described it) … wouldn’t you think that our government, or tourist agencies, or hotel industry, or SOMEBODY would be speaking up and letting Americans know?

But no, they don’t … Natalee was an isolated case ….

The way things are going, people might start to speak up and demand that our government put the interests of our people first and foremost. Don’t hold your breath, though.

    21. Sue on July 26th, 2007 10:47 pm

Well actually if they would solve the crimes against Natalee
and put away teh people that harmed her tourism might come back and the job rate may climb and people might not have to rob people.. but as screwed up as that island is
even if everyone had jobs they would still be thugs and druggies

    22. Allan K on July 26th, 2007 10:54 pm

    32. disgustedmom on July 28th, 2007 6:17 am

The alleged shooters took off without their loot? How do we know the shop owner didn’t shoot himself in the leg? Or how about this…..the shooting was a warning to the shop owners not to tell what they know about some crime?

Oh, wait! A Chinese Market? Didn’t aruba just try to encourage tourism from China? Good one Aruba….again.

    33. mayan_moons on July 28th, 2007 2:14 pm
