For the 50th time, I will ask: what is up with a reward? If it’s set high enough and no worthy leads emerge, then we know that the only parties involved are the ones already detained….It’s human nature: big rewards lead to tips. So again: why isn’t the flush Aruban gov’t and tourist industry ponying up?

Justin T—what say you on this?

And Jan, who says “June 20th, 2005 at 9:45 pm
TK—very well said – I cannot believe how everyone seems to think they know for sure that Joran is guilty – so far the only thing we know he is guilty of is lying initially – he is 17 – how many teens lie – about totally minor things – they truly might have felt she would turn up – or maybe they lied because of sex, or because they are stupid teens?….”

Jan, c’mon: if any rational innocent-of-murder 17 year-old, like you suggest Joran is, were in jail wrongfully accused of his country’s crime of the millenium, he would give up every detail about everyone while loudly explaining every movement of his and protesting his innocence. This guy is doing nothing of the sort. The much more likely scenario is that he used his last 10 days of freedom to construct (maybe even with dad’s help) a plausible tale (or 2 or 3) of denial.

    5. DeeDee on June 21st, 2005 8:33 am

I do believe that the Croes fellow is there voluntarily, probably for the reward. He may have let the vander Sloot use a smaller boat that the company owns early that morning before the judge dad picked him up at Mc Donalds.

      Question for AnnapolisArubaFan:

Are you going to keep cutting and pasting the same post onto every blog page? Just a question:-)

      Question…

Is the expectation that Natalee was a virgin when she was abducted? I ask as this impacts perception; virign she was an innocent victim, non-virgin, she was having a good time that went bad.

      Sandy

    9. Taking a Guess on June 21st, 2005 9:15 am

I think it was the judge who did Natalee. I think that the judge stumbled upon the son doing the wild thing with Natalee and got jealous. Insulted for being left out, his jealousy turned to rage and he killed Natalee. He then helped his son come up with some lame story.

      Good morning everyone!

For those that think dutch boy is only guity of lieing. Yes, every teenager lies but isn’t there always a motivation? Also, does every teenager lie to the police during an investigation? C’mon! Also, if the reports are correct. The boys initially stated they went to the lighthouse for a “foursome”. That tells me they were already explaining DNA evidence in case her body was found.

I am convinced that anyone who tells blatant lies about something like this as they have done is guilty. What other motivation could it be?

Also, I am glad to see a privately-owned search team is headed there. I just wish it had been sooner. They are armed with cadaver dogs and high-definition sonar to search the waters – things that should have been used by the authorities already.

      TO: Mark 2,

Brilliant thought! Did you spend all night coming to this conclusion??? Why is some group of Texas horse riders going to Aruba? This is a total waste of time and money!

Mark my words — these horse wanna-bees will find nothing. This is probably Rich Daddy Holloway just throwing his $ around as he is eaten up alive that he let his daughter go on this trip.

Is anyone able to get the RSS / XML for this site to work?

    13. Kris on June 21st, 2005 9:33 am

      Mark 2,

I agree with your thoughts. It is about time that another search team is going there.

      Sherlock,
If you would have looked at the site for the Texas team you would see that it is donations that are sending them to Aruba, not the Holloways money. Least of all NH’s father, it was her uncle that requested their presence. I personally don’t think that it is a waste of money. You would also notice on their site that they are searching for another missing person and helped overseas after the Tsunami.

      Glad to have helped.

Mike, you may have to allow content in IE for them to appear.

Also during heavy traffic or updating they may stick….briefly and need a refresh. (Usually 30 secs or less.) The page also has an auto refresh built into it so if you leave it up it with refresh itself like cnn and fox pages do.

    16. Phil on June 21st, 2005 9:41 am

I am disappointed that the tourists are not backing off Aruba…not because of the safety issue but to put pressure on a corrupt government to do something.

Joran father is a career politician according to Natalee step-father a “slim ball” in a government job!!! OK it does sound like America…

But people can cause action by canceling their trips to Aruba…

    17. Kris on June 21st, 2005 9:43 am

      AnnapolisArubaFan,

I think you are on to something with the reward money. If Arbua wants to show that the are as committed to finding Natalee as the say in news conferences then I think that they should add to the reward money. I think that it would be a good gesture.

    18. Kris on June 21st, 2005 9:44 am

      Sorry,
Haven’t had enough coffee, the “the” in my last post should be they ;)

    19. AnnapolisArubaFan on June 21st, 2005 9:49 am

      Kris,
My point exactly. If Joran were visiting Washington, DC or NYC with his school and went a-missing under similar circumstances, our local (and likely State and Federal) contribution to reward would have been instant and substantial, right away up to at least $500K. That did not happen in Aruba…maybe because the Polis’ were too busy hoping that two “thugs” did it, rather than “respectables” mingling with the tourists.

ORANJESTAD, Aruba — The family of Natalee Holloway (search) moved to take matters in their own hands Monday, preparing a lawsuit to demand evidence in the case and hiring a Texas company to search for the 18-year-old, who vanished three weeks ago in Aruba. …………….

      Here you go:

Reward In Natalee Holloway Disappearance Increased To $75,000

As reported in the Birmingham News, the reward in the Natalee Holloway case has been increased to $75,000 and many individuals and corporations are chipping in.

Holiday Inn is providing rooms for the family and a private aircraft provided by McWane, Inc. has been used to ferry supporters onto the island of Aruba.

The support isn’t just emotional. The family has been given free rooms at the Holiday Inn, the hotel where 124 Mountain Brook High School graduates had stayed with seven chaperones. Anonymous donors in Birmingham have put up $20,000 in reward money and the City of Mountain Brook anted up $20,000, bringing the total reward money to at least $75,000.

A private jet provided by McWane Inc. has made at least two trips to deliver supporters. Leigh Karagus, the mother of a fellow graduate who was on the trip, offered to pay for three plane tickets for friends who couldn’t make the jet – and then Delta chipped in half the fare.

All is forgiven..I figured you were trying to stirr us up this morning, but I do agree with regarding the reward!!

    24. Justin T on June 21st, 2005 10:48 am

      Phil,

what I have heard is that the reason ou are not seeing a slow down right now is that these trips had already been paid for and could not be cancelled. I have also read that bookings going forward have slowed down a lot. So maybe not all is lost in that respect

    25. Justin T on June 21st, 2005 10:54 am

IF anyone has any information on her disappearance there is an number you may call and you may remain Anonymous. I think what may be most helpful is if someone has the ability to post this on of the Aruba Blogs. The number is 877- Natalee ( 628-2533 )

    26. mbhs05 on June 21st, 2005 11:03 am

Ya’ll just ignore morons like Anapolis, but I thought I WOULD clear up…the Texas group is a non-profit organization that does NOT charge for its services…it’s run on donations. Also “Daddy Holloway” (who is not “Rich”, by the way…the media keeps saying we’re all rich from Mountain Brook…it’s not necessarily true.) did not request the help-her uncle did.
Horses will be able to get places the ATVs can’t…it’ll work better than the previous searches.

    27. Yvonne Redell on June 21st, 2005 11:20 am

Chris, the other person was found but not by TSS. She drove her car into the woods to commit suicide (she shot herself in the head). TSS operates on donations only so please everyone, DONATE. They are leaving today to search for Natalee. They have better equipment than the gov’t of Aruba. Let’s be positive about this, at least they are trying no matter who ask them to go. I wish the negative minds of this site would just shut up and go pass their opinions on another web site. that means you Sherlock Holmes or is it Sherlock Homeless?

    28. JC on June 21st, 2005 11:44 am

They must have gave her some sort of date rape pill.

    29. mike on June 21st, 2005 11:46 am

It seems to me these three guys probably slipped Natalee drugs of some sort (either ex or some date rape type drug). Probably seemed reasonable, last night on the island, by the time the tourist had time to suspect anything she’d already be on her way home. Sounds like these guys have done this kind of thing before. Remember the NY bartender several years ago who date rape drugged like 50 women? (has anyone come forward with a similar tale?) Driving in the car, Joran is making out with Natalee in the back, while the three drive to the lighthouse. Initially the three said they all had sex with Natalee, although it is unsure if Natalee understood about #2 or #3. The brothers then dropped the pair on the beach by the hilton. I think she may have taken a recreational drug on her own or for whatever reason was overdosing at that time (they probably thought she was just sick (go figure). Mr coes was contacted after it was realized she was in physcial distress (remember he wrote a EMT book). I believe it’s imperative to recover body before forensic evidence is lost (drug tests obviously are less conclusive after time). I think Natalee’s mother’s assesment is correct – Joran is arrogrant. He knows time will only benifit him. Who knows, if the body is not found, how can you charge anyone with a crime, perhaps she drowned after a midnight swim!

    30. JC on June 21st, 2005 11:59 am

It’s imperative they get the search team along with the sonar equipment on the shores of Aruba.

    31. Ashley on June 21st, 2005 11:59 am

so has anything else new came up?

    32. JC on June 21st, 2005 12:02 pm

I don’t understand how her friends could have left her alone or let alone have her take off with strangers.

    33. Ashley on June 21st, 2005 12:05 pm

jc thats what i dont understand also, what kind of a friend is going to let you leave with 3 guys that you just meet and just say oh go we will see you later. to me thats not true friends.

    34. mike on June 21st, 2005 12:08 pm

I wonder if anyone else visiting Carlos n Charlies have had a similar experience? With GHB (date rape drug) commonly called “roofies” it is very common not to remember anything the next morning. From the blogs, it seems to be local “sport” to take advantage of young tourists with very little experience with alcohol. These guys went pharma. Her last night on the island….even if she DID remember anything the next day, she’d already be on her way home….

    35. Rob on June 21st, 2005 12:18 pm

Not to be overly negative as I do hope that she is found unharmed, but the way this is going I think the search should be focusing on the ocean nearby where that partyboat (or its smaller tender is docked). If the boys were to have made the stupid/cold-hearted decision to ditch her, the likely spot would be in deep water near by. I read that the TES is going with some advanced sonar equipment and maybe unfortunately that would be of use. I hope my intuition is wrong.

Also, this whole talk of a boycott is ridiculous. Why should the whole country suffer for the acts of at least one idiot? As someone who grow up in the Caribbean I can tell you first-hand that people on vacation sometimes leave their common-sense at home. There are people that will take advantage of you both in this country and abroad. Here, or in the islands, I would never get into a car by myself with 3 strangers (and I’m a guy) and if I were at a club with my friends they wouldn’t let me go either. This story is tragic on all sides as it was seemingly so avoidable.

    36. JC on June 21st, 2005 12:28 pm

Rob, I agree. I doubt she is at some sort of hide out where she is being kept captive. No ransom demand. On another note, you can only go so long without eating or drinking water. They need to start searching the waters without futher delay.

    37. Bob on June 21st, 2005 12:33 pm

A Boycott is to protest the way the Aruban legal system is handling this, If this girl can go home alive I could care less about a conviction. These Keystone cops are just trying to show how smart they are

    38. sandy m on June 21st, 2005 12:40 pm

why don’t we hear from all the girls joran romanced on senior trips if this happened all the time. where are their comments and how were they treated?

    39. born 2 b wild on June 21st, 2005 12:40 pm

Thanks for the new online update feed option here in this blog. I think it is great that this Texas company is going to intensify (and improve the odds) in the search for Natalee. With each passing day the trail indeed grows colder. The simplicity of the chain of events in this situation however, remains as a constant. Lots of alchohol, bad judgement, lack of sufficient supervision (the most important lesson in all of this by the way) They are doing the right thing holding those three (and the d.j.) while this is still a current event and each day is another chance to put it all together.

I hope there is closure soon for the family, friends and everyone that feels for what her parents and loved ones must be going through.

On that note,I hope there is closure soon for the thousands of others gone missing, here in the USA and the rest of the world for that matter.

Sad to say in the majority of those open files (many years and years unsolved) there was no media focus,no rewards offered,no blogs with thousands of comments going in all directions, etc…

We have to ask ourselves (all of us – and dont take this the wrong way) what it is that fuels the “feeding frenzy” of attention to this case.

Pretty young blond syndrome? (if this girl were 300lbs w/acne how many of you would blog it around the clock? Her family would hurt the same as anyones including yours).

Pretty young high school grad out partying syndrome? (So what -happens all over the country and all over the world – boring after a few minutes – as a high schooler that had a blast partying w/friends I can say from first hand experience that past a certain point of balance it always became STUPID))

sleazy group sex factor? (particularly here in the USA – we are notorious for our appetite for that kind of empty, selfish, pleasure seeking that is way out of balance and needs to be addressed by all ages (not just the young). There is nothing wrong with sex, but there is a lot wrong with the animalistic and greedy way it is pursued in our country – by the way, the side effects of this sub intelligent aspect of our society are: rape, incest,AIDS,kidnappings, pedophilia, women NEVER being equal and the list goes on – ever ask yourself how a country as great as ours could be way out in front on all of those ills and evils? we better start “mucking the stall” as a people and make it “cool” and “hot” to show more balance and consideration for others-makes too much sense I guess -boy do we need that kind of sense-especially in the all powerful media))

perhaps it is all of the above and more???

like anyone with a heart and soul and conscience,I hope for closure soon for this and many other cases happening now (missing boy in UT etc…)

    40. Wake Up America on June 21st, 2005 1:30 pm

The viewpoint that the 3 Aruban guys did something to Natalee on their own seems to be the prevalent one. However, what if other people were involved. Maybe these three guys were actually just the front-men for her abduction. Suppose they were on a scouting mission from day one — spotting her when she arrived there, and starting to befriend her in advance of her last night, in order to set her up for the abduction. On the fateful evening, they (or the bartender?) slips a date-rape drug into her drink. (Note that her friends have stated publicly in interviews on television that she wasn’t drinking much and wasn’t intoxicated when she left the bar; but Deepak Kalpoe alledgedly told one of the released security guards that Natalee “was very, very drunk”. This is consistent with her being slipped a date-rape drug at some point). She leaves with them … out to the lighthouse they go, and she vanishes without a trace.

Maybe what really happened wasn’t about them raping her … maybe they deilivered her to other guys who were waiting at the lighthouse. Why would they do that? Maybe they received drugs in exchange, or cash for their gambling activities … Maybe they had gambling debts, and this was a way to settle them …

And, so they delivered an incapacitated girl to the rest of the “team” that was waiting for her arrival … Her captors load her on a boat that night … and she’s gone, without a trace. The guys who took her off the island don’t care about ransoming her … she’s worth more to them as a soon-to-be-exploited sex slave … either in a bordello, or sold to a private buyer … to be kept under lock and key, and sexually abused ad infinitum …

If this actually happened (and there is sex trafficking in the Caribbean and South America, just a stone’s throw away), then Natalee’s last night on Aruba was just the beginning of a real hell for her …

And as far as the 3 guys in jail are concerned, this was a “business transaction”, not a rape. Maybe that’s why they can’t confess to what they did … because what they did is so shocking even by Aruban standards. And maybe they even fear the rest of the organization they were working with — that they would be targeted for reprisal, if they say what really happened.

If these guys are really so “young and naive” as some bloggers suggest, why are they so being so uncooperative ? Maybe this whole story is a lot more sinister, and a lot bigger than we have been led to believe.

    41. traveller on June 21st, 2005 1:34 pm

In case that the3 gys are part of a drug or sex cartel I believe that they don’t confess because then many other Arubans will get into trouble.Maybe there are many of them involved, including Joran’s father.

    42. Mike on June 21st, 2005 1:51 pm

Croes wrote an EMT Book? Does anyone have a link for that?

I saw that he might have reviewed one at amazon, but I thought that had been discredited as well.

    44. traveller on June 21st, 2005 2:02 pm

    45. AtlantaGuy on June 21st, 2005 2:21 pm

I don’t buy the sex slave/sex trade theory–at least not with resepct to white, American, middle-class to upper-middle-class girls.

    46. JC on June 21st, 2005 2:24 pm

Croes works on a boat that docks about 1,000 feet (300 meters) from the Holiday Inn where Holloway was staying. They need to confiscate that boat.

    47. Wake Up America on June 21st, 2005 2:48 pm

Ok Atlanta Guy …. you don’t think the “sex slave/sex trade” theory is plausible. Why not? Have you heard of the case of Amy Bradley, who went “missing” in 1998, and who was subsequently seen in a bordello in Curacao (the island next to Aruba) by a US Naval officer? Reports about her case have appeared on MSNBC. You should read about her case.

I would think that a pretty 18 year-old American girl, with blonde hair and blue eyes, would be viewed as a “prize” by sex traffickers. Certainly a private “buyer” might pay a substantial sum for a young woman fitting that description. Given that sex trafficking exists in the Netherlands Antilles islands and in South America, there is certainly a logistical infrastructure down there to transport women and sell them … For that type of an organization, this would just be another transaction … And if a private “buyer” made a request for them to obtain a girl matching her profile , they would have the connections and means to procure her and move her.

The disturbing thing about Natalee’s disappearance, from my perspective, is that they cannot find any trace of her. If she was taken off of Aruba by boat shortly after being abducted, this would be the case. If she was still on the island somewhere, you would think they would have found her by now.

    48. AtlantaGuy on June 21st, 2005 2:53 pm

I just see absolutely no evidence of it. If it existed, wouldn’t have one person involved in it been caught–at least ONE? Ever?

Amy Bradley has been sigghted hundreds of times, as came out in the famiy’s lawsuit against the cruise line, so you can draw your own conclusion from that.

Perhaps I’d believe it happens if there was any evidence other than unsubstantiated statements and rumors.

    49. AtlantaGuy on June 21st, 2005 3:03 pm

      See below re Amy Bradley:

know. The family claims crew members on the Royal Caribbean ship were hitting on their daughter during the voyage, and that a waiter approached the parents on board while the ship was docked in Aruba, and asked if he could take Amy to a bar. The family says Amy refused. Contacted by CNN, Royal Caribbean would not respond directly to those allegations, or the Bradley’s charges about the crew’s conduct after Amy’s disappearance.

But Royal Caribbean did refer us to a court order from 2000, when a lawsuit the family had filed against the cruise line was thrown out. The order says the Bradleys committed fraud against the court by not disclosing more than 100 reports they’d gotten of people seeing their daughter, in Curacao, after her disappearance.

Many of those witnesses, according to the court order, never mentioned Amy being under any duress. Ron Bradley denies committing fraud. Court documents indicate the Bradleys held back that information out of concern that revealing it could endanger their daughter. The judge didn’t accept that explanation.

    50. Wake Up America on June 21st, 2005 3:05 pm

OK Atlanta Guy — you’re entitled to your opinion. However, at this point in the investigation, given how little we really know about what is going on, every theory is basically an “unsubstantiated statement and rumor”. I don’t think anything should be ruled out at this point. This case could involve more than the three suspects. And as their actions and motivations aren’t fully understood yet, why discount a plausible theory? If what happened to Natalee was all just some coincidental accident (ie. something unplanned), why the absence of a body and other evidence?

this blog has truly bitten the dust

p.s. lin: what the hell are you getting at?

    61. traveller on June 21st, 2005 4:25 pm

But Royal Caribbean did refer us to a court order from 2000, when a lawsuit the family had filed against the cruise line was thrown out. The order says the Bradleys committed fraud against the court by not disclosing more than 100 reports they’d gotten of people seeing their daughter, in Curacao, after her disappearance.>>>

      Atlantaguy,

100 reports is quiet high. Where did you get that information from?
All I read about her was that a guy saw her in a brother in Curac’l, but he reported it too late after the brotehr was toren down.
Why is that a fraud if somebody wouldn,’t doslose such an information? It doesn’t make sense to me.

    62. AtlantaGuy on June 21st, 2005 4:43 pm

It’s a direct quote–not my words. It’s fraud on the court when your pleadings say you’ve got one sighting00the guy in the brothel–when you’ve actually got over 100. Courts don’t like to be lied to.

I live in bham ( mt brook ) where natalee lives, i too was wondering why friends saw her leave and did nothing! I know that she is either sold for sex or dead. I just hope
either way they either find her body and can bring her back to us here in alabama or find her and get her out of the terrible fear and abuse she must be in and bring her home. we feel as if she is our girl here.
i also wonder when they have spoken to her friends they just laugh and smile on t.v. and say natalee is strong she will be back. maybe they are nervous but she is not my close friend and i have cried my eyes out for this girl. i have my yellow ribbon on my door in hopes of her return as many of us here in bham do. she has a very strong mother i would be doing the same thing looking for my daughter and demanding her return. i hope that natalee’s brother is doing okay.
i just wonder how many people have disappeared at that island they say that amy was at that same bar a couple of days prior to missing off of the cruise ship, is this true?
is it also true that two young guys are missing from there? what is up with this island are they taking them across the island and selling them?
yes i believe we need to stop going there until we get answers due to the fact to bring pressure on them to find out what is going to with their goverment.
It has nothing to do with just be careful when you go there but you can still have a great vacation these people need to be brought down and i do believe that the judge knows much more than we think.
      missing natallee in alabama
prayers and hopes going out to her family

I think the “boys offered Natalee a ride home that night. I think they took her to the light house and did terrible things to her. I think that at that place they killed her.
I think that if they take a tracter and use a large deep rake in the dunes near the light house and then use the special dogs to sniff for her remains they will find her body in the dunes. I think that the father and the son had been in close communication on their cell phones as the father describes that his sone would call him to pick him up.
I think the elder Van der Sloot knows more than he is saying.

Spent a week on Aruba several years ago with husband and 2 teenaged daughters. We took a trip in our rental car around the island. Stopped in a delapitated Pensione-bar that was in San Nicolas, that part of the island is where day labourers, fisherman and workers for the oil company live. Its a lower income town. We continued on past BABY Beach, the Oil company’s fenced in housing area, past the prison and stopped at some caves where it appeared storms had caused the erosion-hence the caves. At the end of our day-long trip we went to the lighthouse which housed a small cafe-bar (then). At sunset, we went to the area adjacent to the lighthouse,we were told the islands’ garbage was dumped to feed the sharks. The ocean was very rough there and the current appeared strong. There was no sandy beach but rather a very rough eroded rocky plateau above the water. Unless the island has stopped dumping their garbage- and hauling it off shore now, it would be a likely place to dump a body. The area is known to all island residents. Why haven’t we heard of this from the locals?

I too worriend about the side of the island where I was told they dump garbage for the sharks. I to believe that a clue will show up soon…humans cannot be that secretive and I too believe that natalee will be found.

I submit that two theories exist here. Either Natalee did not leave the island, in which case she is surely dead, or that she was taken off the island to Venezuela or Columbia, in which case she is most likely to be alive. Whilst they are busy searching the island it would not be amiss for her parents to have posters put up in both countries ( in Spanish of course) detailing her disappearance and highlighting the large reward for information leading to her recovery.

    69. Cindy Maietta on July 9th, 2005 1:36 am

I think this is so sad and frustrating. I can’t even imagine being any member of Natalee’s family, especially her mom or dad, I don’t know if she has siblings. It’s such a tragedy. We don’t know that her friends were even sober enough to hold her back from going with these guys. She probably was on something that was slipped in her drink by one of these guys. I’m sure they got a little rough with her, which happens alot, unfortunately, then shipped her off to another country. This is more common than people realize. She is a beautiful girl, who made a mistake, by going with strangers, but probably didn’t realize what she was doing, and unfortunately, her and her family are paying the price.

It’s the most tragic story besides the Shasta and Dylan Groene case. I can’t imagine my mom, and brothers being killed. Thank God she has two other brothers and her dad still alive. That poor girl has to live with what happened to her for the rest of her life, and Natalee’s parents may never find answers, or Natalee, or be given any answers.

Does anybody know what happened to the girl who disappeared from Jamaica a number of years ago. I know we went there for vacation and I could see something like that happening over on those islands. I realize it can happen anywhere, but especially on the islands. She disappeared too, and I never heard what the outcome of that was.

To all you young girls, and boys, out there, please be careful! I tell my daughter this all the time, don’t ever put a drink down, bring your own alcohol to a party, keep it in your hands, don’t ever let it leave your hands, and don’t ever leave with anybody that you don’t know well enough. Don’t ever get that sloppy drunk either, that you don’t know what you’re doing, or what somebody else is doing, and always stick by friends and people that you can trust. Always bring somebody with you at all times, like a good friend. Watch each other’s backs. Let’s face it, teenagers are going to drink, but they have to be responsible, or they will face terrible consequences, especially when you go to a place that you’re not familiar with, as far as the area and the people. The most important thing, don’t drink and drive.

I pray for everybody out there to always use good judgement and think things out before you do them. Think of what the consequences could be.

Sorry this is so long. I’m on a roll tonight. I’m wide awake. I took a three hour nap before.

Peace to all of you. Love one another and pray every day, and thank God for what you have. Some people aren’t as lucky, as we see in this situation. They had everything, so it seemed, now they don’t have their daughter. They seem like decent people too. I pray every day for them to find Natalee, and I pray she can be alive, but unfortunately, the chances of that are getting very slim.
