I could drink at 18 as well… is there really such ahuge difference between 18 and 21… maybe for some.. Im sure..

    5. gaijin on June 11th, 2005 8:56 pm

      Nativelingo –
so nothing new? I got the impression that the press were trying to perhaps ignite the “abduction” theory from the little I heard walking in..

    6. Ronald on June 11th, 2005 8:57 pm

Is there a difference between 18 and 21? Yes, a MONUMENTAL difference. You’re talking about a high school kid vs. a college graduate.

    7. lisabobeesa on June 11th, 2005 8:57 pm

First of all i have to say..tom you crack me up….!! and i whole heartedly agree!!!im off for a bit…my 17yr old is going out for the evening…so seeing him off….feeling extra blessed to have him around…and of course..extra cautioning..not just from the Holloway case..but a pal of his was involved in a fatal car crash..had my son not fallen asleep and been left behind..he wouldve been in the vehicle…and lord knows…with this age comes so many variables….so hard to totally insulate them..we do our best as they grow…but they like us all are only human… will be back later!!hope something happens…and some closure is offered for her family

    8. bengalbaby on June 11th, 2005 8:57 pm

Did they even bother to hold a press conference to refute the rumors? What the hell is going on down there? Typical banana republic.

Amanda… Same here, but I was taught in Italy and drinking at a younger age.

To all Arubans still around. The few Americans acting like know-it-all jerks really are a minority, though I’m sure it doesn’t seem that way to you. I’m sorry.

Basically there are no facts available. If I were to ever bash the police, legal system, or whatever, I would wait until I had facts to do it with. I don’t think that is too much to ask. Nor do I think it a valid basis to criticise Aruba because it does things differently.

      Sigh.

    32. Rick on June 11th, 2005 9:04 pm

      THEORY ON NATALEE’S DISAPPEARANCE:

After looking at Joran’s now-removed websites on Tickle.com and MSN.com, the picture I got from him was a hard-partying kid who liked misogynistic rap music (his favorite was “Candy Store” by 50 Cent. Look up the lyrics if youre interested, but it’s all about degrading a woman who performs oral sex on the singer)… who fancied himself a gangsta/playa as evidenced by the numerous photos he posted of himself with girls, flashing make-believe gang signs.

I then heard the report on FOX from a DIARIO reporter who said that Joran was known to have anger management problems, something which he heard from several sources.
This to me is a euphemism for him having had problems with fighting, assault – and that he was either receiving professional treatment or punishment.

I then read the confirmed report that Joran was in a near-fight/shoving match with some of Natalee’s classmates…

And putting that all together, it seems rather likely that the kid has a very short fuse, and that he is obsessed with looking like a womanizing, heterosexual player…

Knowing that they took Natalee in his car, Joran in the back with Natalee, and his two friends in the front seat- it would have been not just embarassing – but it would likely have INFURIATED Joran – if Natalee refused him.

Flash back to the photo of Joran on his website, where he has a belt wrapped around a shirtless kid’s neck, Joran grinning, while the other kid looked pained…

.. And a scenario of assault, choking, rape – seems like a pretty likely outcome.

And if he did choke her to death, and knew he’d been seen leaving C&C with her, he’d have to come up with an alibi.

And a good alibi which couldn’t be checked would be to blame one of the faceless black security guards at that weekends music festival – knowing they were already off the island and that they wore all-black uniforms, whereas the HI security did not.

I believe Joran confessed, as Police Commissioner Dompig said there was one confession – His mother was at the police station that evening, visibly upset, and he seems like the likely candidate given his alleged history and the fact that he had befriended Natalee the day before and was her ‘friend’ – sitting with her in the back of the car as well.

That’s my theory – I havent read any reports that would disprove it, though Im sure there is much more to the story…

    33. bengalbaby on June 11th, 2005 9:04 pm

I read a post somewhere … stating that natalee had gone missing on another vacation with her parents…anyone else read that one?

    34. Red on June 11th, 2005 9:05 pm

Geraldo’s on the case, oh boy. Has he found Al Capone’s vault yet?

    35. bengalbaby on June 11th, 2005 9:06 pm

      LOL all capones vault…!

    36. Tila_Bean on June 11th, 2005 9:08 pm

Totally off subject…what in the hell is up with geraldo’s mustache? Lol. He gets on my nerves but I will be watching him tonight at 10, can’t wait.

    37. Amanda on June 11th, 2005 9:09 pm

I have heard that the pictures and stuff were awful . . . . However you can not tell the character of a person by the music they listen to.

    38. NativeLingo on June 11th, 2005 9:09 pm

Yes Bengal, I heard it too …..stories are all over the island…..
even a tourist from, mind you, ALABAMA, told me the same thing…..don’t know if it’s true though,…..

    39. Amanda on June 11th, 2005 9:09 pm

I am not defending him by any means just defending those of us who do listen to that music

    40. bengalbaby on June 11th, 2005 9:10 pm

Wow… Im glad someone else finally has heard about that….I wonder if it’s true…

    41. friend of mickey john on June 11th, 2005 9:10 pm

I’m just saying maybe this is just the first time Jordan gets caught…Maybe the other girls went missing and thier families were not rich enough to get FBI involved

    42. Ronald on June 11th, 2005 9:10 pm

You have to be nuts to send your teenage daughter overseas to a tropical waterng hole. Let’s face it: throwing a young girl into that environment is tantamount to chumming the waters at sea. Throw enough chum in the water, and the sharks will start circling.

These resort areas are crawling with sexual predators who see every teenage girl as having an invisible “F— Me” sign on her forehead. Why someone would want to subject his or her daughter to that environment is beyond me.

It’s the same with spring break. If you want your daughter to serve as a furry wall socket for teenage guys who want sex at all costs, go right ahead, but the motivation eludes me. When you send your daughter to a place like this, you’re asking for toruble.

    43. KerinTX on June 11th, 2005 9:11 pm

No Red…but he did just call Aruban LE “naive”.

FOX…please call Geraldo back to the US. (for a Hoffa sighting or something)

dont know if you dropped out last last and went to the other post and heard me- but I apologize(d) for the emotional outburst last night. And if not, I apologize again.
I was “just” upset with the “anouncement”.

    46. Nate on June 11th, 2005 9:11 pm

I would read too much into the pictures of Jaron…a lot of kids have photos of themselves with friends, girls, guys, just being foolish, and he even had photos up of him with his family…and even I own a 50 cent CD….

    47. Tom on June 11th, 2005 9:12 pm

I did a search on Jordon and I only came up with a reference to Eason Jordon by me… Did you give the right name. I am pretty fried tonight so I may not be connecting the dots very well.

Does anyone else recall reading a blog post or news report from another American woman (from Boston?) who reported spending time with Joran and he got aggresive with her? I’ve read so much on this case in the last few days I really can’t be certain where I read this. Maybe my once sharp mind is showing middle age!

Friend of Mickey, I think you are psychic. I was just wondering with what frequency something bad happens to young girls who do not enjoy so many resources.

The three most profitable businesses on earth are arms, drugs, and human beings, not necessarily in that order.

    66. KerinTX on June 11th, 2005 9:19 pm

I wouldn’t read a lot into pictures Joran had on a website. You would be shocked to see the photos I have seen of “good kids” in this area posted to websites like myspace.com. (14 and 15 yr old kids drinking, nude photos of themselves, etc)

But most posters are going to be reasonable.

Native, I agree. Once a “player”, always a “player”….guess that’s true in any country!

I think its very odd Joran did not tell his parents he knew Natalee and spent time with her. Not logical if you’re innocent. Typically anyone (innocent) would be blown away by news that a person known to them was suddenly missing!

    82. m wood on June 11th, 2005 9:22 pm

      welcome back arubagirl

    83. Rick on June 11th, 2005 9:22 pm

Guys – I didn’t say that because he called “Candy Store” one of his favorite songs, or the fact that his photos were all either posed with women, liquor or choking some kid – that he was guilty.

It does paint a picture of the kid – his mother said he was a gifted athlete, who competed in soccer, tennis, etc. There were zero photos of this kind of stuff on any of his websites.

And he certainly didnt post photos of himself winning a chess tournament or doing any of the activities you think folks would enjoy in Aruba.

I think the photos and music and ‘anger management’ stories, combined with the underage drinking, gambling, etc – paint a disturbing image of Joran. That’s my point, not that any one of those things makes him guilty…

But, given the above, and add to that the fact his mother was at the jail last night, visibly upset, the AP story of a ‘confession’ – which I think may be a confession via phone tap or hearsay, but not a ‘legal confession’ – thus the discrepancy in reporting and denial from his lawyer – that blood was found in his car, that at least one of the three reports ‘something bad happened’ – I think the likely outcome is that Joran is the guilty party – probably a spurned sexual advance causing rage/violence that went too far…

      We shall see…….

    84. dragonfly on June 11th, 2005 9:22 pm

Welcome back arubagirl. I am personally glad you are back!

    94. StanUS on June 11th, 2005 9:25 pm

All these stories and retractions are amazing. I’ve never seen a case like this before. I don’t think there is any question that the 3 kids had something to do with it.

Perhaps the FBI can push Barney Fife and the other Aruba Investigators aside and get some things done.

    95. arubagirl on June 11th, 2005 9:25 pm

Nothing de nada. We were sure that today we were going to get a resolution. It seems that the prosecution’s office and the police force are keeping their mouths shut tighter than Fort Knox.

I’m not sure if the AP is still saying that Gerald Dompig gave the info about ‘something bad’ happened, but he denied that he has ever done this. On the other hand, I doubt that the AP is so stupid to say his name while it isn’t true.

I was wondering if your local news is reporting anything? If the police and FBI are searching crime scenes, you’d think it’d be news, that people would be seeing and reporting this…

      Anything??

Lola I have also been wondering why Mickey and Abraham are still imprisoned.

It is not likely that either would be enthusiastic about sacrificing their freedom for the sake of a prominent family, or business interests. I don’t know if that was originally a hoped for scenario, just saying I would not think it likely.

On the other hand, if US operatives are “assisting” in the “interrogations,” I would imagine that all five would have confessed to killing both JFK and JonBenet by now.

    117. Rick on June 11th, 2005 9:30 pm

      Bizarre. Arubagirl…

I wonder if local media has been asked by the Aruba government to stop reporting?? Is that plausible?

Well, friend, eventually they’re going to let the sec. guards go. The longer they hold them, the worse it looks for the prosecution. In my opinion, few to none people ever bought the security guard story. I say they should sue. They might not get a lot, but it’s something.

    125. J.C. on June 11th, 2005 9:32 pm

Okay…to Mark, Ronald and Bamamama, your sensible comments are falling onto deaf ears, trust me. Here’s a thought, if these “18 year old adults” were so responsible and ready to be adults and make adult decisions, why did they need chaperones in the first place. And if they were so “repsonsible” why didn’t they pay for the trip themselves. Isn’t that what being an “adult” is all about, taking on personal repsonsibility? They woudn’t need mommy and daddy’s money, they would have their own. Why I’m coming down so hard is that I’m really tired of this situation of NH being 18 and legal being compared to drinking at frat parties and drunk driving which happens to also be ILLEGAL!!! Oh we can get trashed on our local college campuses if we are underage so that excuses these children, yes I said children, to go overseas and make really bad decisions??? Don’t get me wrong, as I stated earlier this afternoon, I made some REALLY BAD decisions when I was younger and I’m dang lucky to be in one piece, let alone alive. I was the QUEEN of partiying….I went to school where there was not only a large state college, but and Army base to boot. (can we say party central) And I can tell you this, there were a lot of girls that “got in trouble” by messing with G.I.’s thinking they were little frat boys. These army guys were MEN and not to be toyed with. I look back and think how stupid I was. You have to be KIDDING yourselves to think an 18 year old, fresh out of high school can make the same rational decisions that someone in their mid to late twenties could. I don’t think I made rational decisions until I was 30!! As someone state earlier, the buck has to stop somewhere and some one needs to start taking personal responsibility. If these chaperones weren’t really chaperones, then why were they there? Was everyone on this trip 18 and over? If so, “adults” don’t need chaperones in my book since everyone wants the take the “I’m legal and 18 road”.

    126. StanUS on June 11th, 2005 9:34 pm

I don’t think any of these conspiracy theories will come true. In many of these cases, the most obvious thing is usually right. The most obvious thing is these 3 kids killed her and dumped her body somewhere.

Perhaps when they get some professionals to look at the case, we will finally get it solved.

    127. NativeLingo on June 11th, 2005 9:34 pm

    128. friend of mickey john on June 11th, 2005 9:34 pm

I understand holding them if there is evidence for up to 100 days
but would be false imprisonment if they are being held to keep them quiet until it is convenient for aruba officials.

    129. StanUS on June 11th, 2005 9:35 pm

arubagirl, I don’t think it matters how long they hold them now. The prosecution already looks like a joke to most of us. Letting them go too early may cause them bad publicity as they are most likely going to talk to reporters about their ordeal.

Please remind me in the morning as I am totally fried.

Got to bed at 4:45 this morning and my 5 year old woke me at 6:15, and then have written probably 10,000 words today.

Excuses I know, but if you remind me, I will look into, or the brain will be working well enough to put 2 and 2 together.

      Sorry

    133. Neil on June 11th, 2005 9:36 pm

Rick’s theory about Joran losing it when rebuffed is certainly plausable.

I have seen some of these “anger management” type problems in kids using steroids to improve performance in sports. Since Joran was into sports, it makes me wonder.

Are steroids in common use by kids in highschool sports in Aruba? Anyone familiar with this issue?

    134. dragonfly on June 11th, 2005 9:36 pm

No one even IMPLIED that these 18 year olds were mature enough to be int he situation they were in, but just that the same situations can occur here and that the US legal system deems them adults at 18. That’s it. 18 is of legal age in this country. You can make your own decisions even if you aren’t mature enough to do so. Therefore these “KIDS” could take this vacation with or without adults. And once again, has anyone seen the cancelled checks of all the parents that paid for this trip. No one knows if the parents paid or not.

    135. Astrid on June 11th, 2005 9:36 pm

I posted this in the Natalee Holloway thread from June 4th, but this thread seems to be a lot more active, so I’m reposting it here. My apologies if it’s considered spam.

Okay, so here’s my theory. I don’t think Natalee is dead. I think that she was sold into prostitution or slavery and taken to another country after being drugged up. I think the young men who were arrested were paid to lie about murdering Natalee (which later was corrected to ‘something bad happened’ to her, which shows just what a tangled web this is), and I don’t think they will lead anyone to her body.. they are just buying time for the real kidnappers. There will be no evidence against them, and Natalee’s kidnappers will already be far away with her in captivity before anyone goes looking elsewhere for her..
      I wonder if I’m right.
I really hope that Natalee is found safe and sound. My thoughts and prayers go out to her and her family.

    136. Hoover John on June 11th, 2005 9:36 pm

    139. Rick on June 11th, 2005 9:37 pm

      OK, J.C – Youre right.

No Eighteen year old should be permitted to leave the country and enter another country where the drinking age is 18. Should never be permitted to go anywhere any illicit drugs are sold, as there’s a chance an unsupervised 18 year old might want to experiment.

All fraternity parties should be outlawed immediately, and any prom where alcohol is surreptitiously consumed would result in the immediate jailings of the chaperones and High School administrators.

No female would be permitted to go on Spring Break, anywhere, because you know what will happen – she will inevitably drink too much and wind up on “Girls Gone Wild” – her life and career ruined with a single flash of a nipple.

      Yawn.

    140. arubagirl on June 11th, 2005 9:37 pm

Okay, here’s why I don’t think they’ve asked the local press to stop coverage.
      1) There is actually one radio station doing the most coverage (Top 95.1)
      2) This radio station has very close ties to the current governmetn
      3) Elections is in a few months. Government does not want to piss off their main media ally
4)Top is already miffed that according to them, U.S. media is getting tips faster than they are from officials. This is what they said, I don’t know if it’s true.
      5) Ergo, goverment officials just let them to do their thing.
      6) If the prosecution’s office told them to stop talking or whatever, they would start crying “Freedom of the PRess” faster than you can say CNN.

Native might have another opinion on this, of course.

      STan, honey, I am STRONG

JC—-Agreed. Any suggestion that an 18-year-old is an “adult” is absurd. Why anyone ASSUMES that there is some relationship between the legal age of majority and maturity is beyond me. The age of majority was set many decades ago, when people lives accelerated lives. ASn 18-year-old is an adult in the legal sense only.

    149. m wood on June 11th, 2005 9:40 pm

    150. J.C. on June 11th, 2005 9:40 pm

So if you are allowed to make your own decisions at the age of 18, whether mature or not, where should the personal responsibility fall?? With NH???

    151. arubagirl on June 11th, 2005 9:41 pm

Steroids, swear to GOD I know nothing of this. Not trying to cover up or anything, I just don’t know

What I would like to point out is that in normal highschools in Aruba (not Int. School of AUA), sports and athletes don’t play that big a deal in school hierarchy. It really doesn’t matter if you’re a good athlete or not. Most schools don’t have permanent teams, only when there is a tournament going.
I think if you asked girls at Colegio Arubano (my former high school) to be cheerleaders they would have just laughed.

    156. dragonfly on June 11th, 2005 9:42 pm

I think that is the point we have all tried to make…mature or not 18 is legal age in this country. Legally these kids can go wherever they want as long as they abide by the laws of the country they are in. No one has disputed maturity. Only that they did not need permission to go on this trip or babysitters while they were there. According to our law they are of age.

    157. StanUS on June 11th, 2005 9:42 pm

Instead of blaming chaperones and parents, lets teach these kids in school. I can’t remember ever being taught about this kind of stuff. I especially think this goes for the female gender. There should be classes on how to handle themselves in these situations.

She did nothing wrong, though perhaps used poor judgement in drinking too much and leaving with strangers. Then again, she may have been drugged.

In any case, blaming the VICTIM or adults accompanying the kids on the trip – is absurd.

I’ve seen shows where girls lives were ruined by acts you obviosly take to be so trivial, namely “girls gone wild”. Do you think that is a good image to have??? Would you like your female family members to be like that?? I also very much expect to see Joran the Pus*y try to hang this on one, or both of his 2 “buddys”. By my accounts so far he tried to blame the 2 security gaurds, that didn’t seem to work. Then, …..and this is just a thought……the other guy that was arrested today may have been someone new that he tried to blame. Seems they picked him up after the “confession”. The fact that you continually harp on and suggest that Natalee’s parents and/or the other parents who went along on this trip are somehow responsible – really makes me wonder about *you*.

Millions of teenagers and 20-somethings travel to different countries, go to parties and Spring Break around the country without incident, and have memorable and enjoyable times. To repeatedly point to the horrors of Spring Break, to suggest a woman attending spring break is a “WHORE” and that her parents are “Whoring Her” – really just casts *you* in a very bizarre light.

      All IMHO…

    187. Ronald on June 11th, 2005 9:52 pm

Well, it’s the truth. Pretending that so-called “spring break” is anything other than a large, unfilmed swingers’ party is just being naive. When you send your daughter off to spring break, you’re sending her off to be used and abused.

I have been following along with the comments but have remained silent until now. Stan…get a grip. School should teach what parents are to teach? Just when should this start? And seeing that “sex ed” isn’t even allowed, how should it be approached. As I said, get a grip.

On another note, I am very sorry for whatever predicament Natalee is in…whether it be alive or not. She did not deserve anything bad. Most normal woman(if thinking realistically) can picture herself in Natalee’s shoes. I know at 18 I made some stupid choices, and fortunately I am still here; however, I could very easily have been in the same position as Natalee. It is not her parent’s fault nor is it hers, and in my opinion, anyone who thinks so is absolutely narrowminded! Sorry for sounding so negative the first time I comment, but I wish people weren’t so callous….

    195. Astrid on June 11th, 2005 9:55 pm

I partly agree with Ronald.. but if a girl is promiscuous, she’s going to be promiscuous wherever she goes.. it’s just as dangerous in the United States or anywhere else (roughly). But I’m sure that some girls don’t have sex on a spring break trip, as I wouldn’t and won’t, if I go one when when I’m a senior (I’m only 14 now). I would go to enjoy the local customs and be with my friends for the last time before we parted ways to go to college.

    196. dragonfly on June 11th, 2005 9:55 pm

I went to a party after my graduation. I drank beer and some wine coolers. I kissed a boy that I had liked for a long time. Am I a whore Ronald? Same thing isn’t it? Only I was in my home town. But my parents let me go. Did they whore me out?

Did I send her off to be “whored”? Hell no.

Ummm…hello? I just said that if all of these people were over 18 that there should not have been chaperones. I’m not blaming the chaperones. There shouldn’t have been any in the first place especially if they weren’t going to “chaperone”.

    201. Karen on June 11th, 2005 9:56 pm

I honestly hope that Natalee’s parents don’t forever regret sending her to Aruba. The chances that she would have a wonderful time right before she had to buckle down to studying for a long time were a great gift to her. She worked hard for her “better than a 4.0 average” and I’m sure her parents just thought she deserved some fun. I’m from Birmingham and my very intelligent Grandfather once told me “make a decision , stick to it and don’t regret it”. I hope her parents know that they made a decision to let her go to Aruba only out of great love to her. What she encountered could have easily happened in Tuscaloosa after she got to the University. There are just bad people out there. Just pray that one day when your time on earth is over that you will see your beautiful daughter again!

Okay, since Aruba’s history has come to the order, here we go:
      (See, still not responding)

Until 1954, Aruba was a colony. During the WWII, when Aruba and the rest of the what is today Neth. Ant. noticed that they can handle some affairs well while Dutch government is busy with other matters (liberating their country), an independence movement came along. The government dragged its feet, worrying more about Indonesia, because it’s bigger, and richer. NOT defending the Dutch government in this case, just stating history as I was taught. Anyway, Indonesia got its independance after much bloody fighting, and then Neth. remembered its colonies in the ‘West’.
So, we got a shiny new name, “Netherlands Antilles” and some power. In the 70s Aruba got restless being under the mandate of Curacao, who was the ‘head island’ in the Netherlands Antilles, and we wanted to be out of the Netherlands Antilles. Dutch government, said sure, honey, but then you gotta become independent too. Referendum was held, majority agreed. So in 1986 we got Status Aparte. With everything being controlled by us, except 1) foreign relations 2) defense 3)judiciary (to a certain degree that last point). However, we decided that we liked the STatus Aparte, but the independence thing wasn’t too appealing, so we asked to stay part of the Dutch Kingdom, and here we are.

    204. Rick on June 11th, 2005 9:57 pm

OK Ronald – Why not call the Holiday Inn in Aruba and let Natalee’s family know how you feel? The number there is 297-58-63600

Let her know that you think THEY were whoring Natalee as you put it, and that they’re responsible for her death.

If you go to spring break or on a graduation trip, you don’t have to get trashed and be a ho. Has anyone over 30 been out to a club lately? It’s the same deal that now a majority of the girls feel they have to make out with other females to get guys interested. What’s up with that? You just talked to guys when I was 21, not make out with your best friend on the dance floor.

      A Pre Disappearance Fight?
      by Tom
The Birmingham News is reporting that Joran Andreas Petrus Van Der Sloot and some of his friends almost got into a fight with some travel companions of Natalee Holloway.
One of the three young men arrested Thursday in the disappearance of Mountain Brook teen Natalee Holloway got into a pushing match with some of her friends in an Aruban bar, one of Holloway’s friends said Thursday.
Bryan Reynolds, 18, one of 124 recent high school graduates who went to Aruba in late May, said some of his friends almost got into a fight with Joran Andreas Petrus Van Der Sloot and his friends.
The scuffle started after Van Der Sloot, a Dutch suspect arrested at his upper-class home in Oranjestad, Aruba, Thursday morning, had been talking to 18-year-old Holloway at a bar where she and classmates hung out during the five-day trip, Reynolds said.
“There was almost a fight between my friend and him,” said Reynolds, who was sitting in his car in the parking lot of Mountain Brook Community Church on Thursday after attending a noon prayer service with his classmates and others. “I had to break them up. That’s when I got a good look at them.”

Reynolds said he saw the suspects hanging out at the Holiday Inn where the Mountain Brook High School graduates stayed in Oranjestad. When Holloway went missing, Reynolds said they were the first people he considered as potential suspects.
“That was the first people who came to mind,” said Reynolds, who said Holloway is one of his best friends.

However, given the level of US participation, the involvement of prominent families, and the bizarre succession of statements and retractions that seem consistent with a disinformation strategy somewhat more sophisticated than one would expect in an ordinary criminal case, I suspect that those who have suggested that the case may be related to activities of very sensitive and profitable business interests.

Whenever some horrible situation like this happens – Central Park Jogger Rape, Robert Chambers girlfriend murder -etc., there are always creeps that crawl out of the woodwork and blame the victims, or the victims family – as in this case.

Ronald – If parents teach and know their daughters really well, their daughters would be less likely to be promiscuous and drink on spring break. I think parents should offer their children cautionary advice, call them at an appointed time daily, and investigate the location before letting their daughter go on any such trip. However, I’m not blaming Natalee’s parents or Natalee herself, I’m just saying, I think if parents were a bigger part of their kids’ lives, these things might occur less often.

FOX NEWS – Geraldo Interviews Parents of Natalee

Family is incredibly frusterated with the investigators and the lack of progress and information. She stated she broke down last night and demanded some real answers from the police. They didn’t give her much but to prepare herself for the worst.

Geraldo informs her of the blood in the car and she says it was the first she heard of it. She states the police did not tell her anything and that was frusterating. They also said that they lied about Joran’s background by stating he had an impecable record, which is turning out to be false.

The mother of Natalee met Joran and said he was arrogant, cold, and not the person police have made him out to be.

Overall the family seems incredibly mad at investigators and the lack of anything. She stated her frusteration over the fact that forensics like the blood from the car could have been found 12 days ago.

    278. Whitney on June 11th, 2005 10:15 pm

Not into “crapping on the Aruba government”; however, here goes…

Aruba fought for their indepence and was given it but then got a reward to become something outside of the Nantilles…if my memory servers correctly, these are the same folks that supported policies that led to:

Hmmm…Theo Van Gogh and the violence appertaining to..

…because of Holland’s Indonesian connection, 30,000 immigrants are taken into their very small country…

…so, they aren’t really concerned with condemning one of their stars, Van Der Sloot-es-kine and his family as killers-just-because-they’re-alive…they can’t even justify them as freedom fighters…

Just a spoiled rotten Van Der Snooten-heir from the Netherlands-’n-snooten.

    279. Ronald on June 11th, 2005 10:16 pm

Astrid—Agreed. And if you have a mature, sophisticated daughter, fine. But by all accounts this girl was a credulous ingenue who was too trusting for her own good. That kind of girl is not prepared for what she will face in that kind of environment.

    280. arubagirl on June 11th, 2005 10:16 pm

Astrid, if they investigated ARuba, what would they have come up with, exactly? It’s not as if teens are abducted or missing on a rampant basis.

    281. K in TX on June 11th, 2005 10:16 pm

Ronald, I tend to disagree with you (again, lol). You say her parents made a terrible mistake? I say those 3 teens made the mistake.

    282. bengalbaby on June 11th, 2005 10:17 pm

Maybe Natalee never should have left the house!

    284. dragonfly on June 11th, 2005 10:17 pm

And I personally believe they are beating themselves up with it right now even though most rational people don’t think it is in anyway their fault. I know what regret is with my children and they are all still here alive and well. These poor parents are dying inside right now and there are people like you out here blaming them for their daughter’s death. What a cruel world we live in. This is exactly why rape victims are now kept out of the press, because there are always jerks out there looking to make it out to be their fault instead of the monsters that did it to them.

    288. Astrid on June 11th, 2005 10:18 pm

Arubagirl – No, Aruba’s a good place.. it’s just.. I don’t know. They could have found out about the other girl that was abducted who went to the same bar, and cautioned her about it, maybe.. or found some alternative places they could have suggestd for her to go to, if they knew she was a drinker.

    289. Ronald on June 11th, 2005 10:18 pm

Ronald spewed, “Rick, your comments are absurd. I think her parents made a terrible mistake, and I’m sure they’re aware of it.”

No, Ronald, they’re not “absurd.” You’re the nitwit who is blaming the victim and family of the victim for the crimes of another.

The parents made no mistake. Though I think your parents may have made a serious mistake, Ronald, they should have given more consideration to the abortion option.

I cant believe I’m reading some effing moron blame the parents here, and suggest they were ‘whoring out’ their daughter by sending her on a holiday that thousands of other kids go on without incident.

Ronald, I repeat – you are an absolute effing idiot, and if you really believe what you’re saying, I have posted the phone number of the Holiday Inn- go ahead and share your carefully considered parenting guidance with the family. Or will you only do that on message boards?

(I really don’t know why) As for Rick comparing the Central Park Jogger to this situation is ridiculous. Your are comparing someone who was pulled off of park path and gang raped to someone who was drunk in a bar and from what we know, willingly and naively left with three men. UNBELIEVEABLE!! APPLES AND ORANGES!! (have fun at Chuck E. Cheese and make sure your daughter’s hand gets stamped so no one can take her)

    318. Ronald on June 11th, 2005 10:23 pm

The problem with our society is that we have reached the point at which POLITICAL CORRECTNESS has triumphed over TRUTH, and, as far as I am concerned, that is a tragedy.

We are now more concerned with sparing people’s feelings than sparing their lives. We sit here and try do absolve the girl’s friends, absolve the chaperones, etc. Why? Because we’re so afraid of offending anyone that we dance around the TRUTH. When we do this, the CORRECT MESSAGE is never sent, and the situation becomes that much more likely to occur again in the future.

    319. Rick on June 11th, 2005 10:24 pm

JC – Read the words please. The comparison was between the numbskulls who BLAME THE VICTIM, not the crimes.

    336. dontblamethevictim on June 11th, 2005 10:26 pm

No offense to everyone blaming all of this on the parents or victim, but to be cliche’, “no means no.”

That’s like saying a girl in a short skirt who gets raped was asking for it.

While I do think the safety of women is a problem and people need to use common sense, the girl was 18 and able to go out of the country even if her parents disapproved. Also, people can dress, behave, act however they want. No one deserves to be the victim of violent crime and no one asks for it.

    367. googler on June 11th, 2005 10:31 pm

I have been away for a few hours and I wonder if anyone has suggested that entire news fiasco today was done intentionally by the police to convince each of the 3 suspects that one of the other ones had confessed.

They may have done this sort of thing, where that seed a rumor, in other cases and may not have expected the media firestorm that erupted.

    368. dragonfly on June 11th, 2005 10:32 pm

So, at this point in the investigation we are really no better off than yesterday or 5 days ago except there are more people in custody? Am I right? I can’t watch the news either. I have my own children here and 2 extras who are watching cartoons.

    369. nancy_drew on June 11th, 2005 10:32 pm

I have to agree this is not the family of the victims fault. We raise our kids and at a certain point we have to let them go and trust we’ve given them what they need to survive in the world independently. At 18 years of age this child was headed to college and lets face it, this could have happened in her college dorm…or in the city she was living in! Young people can’t be watched or chaperoned at all times!

I do disagree with trips like this. Even though Aruba sounds like a really wonderful vacation spot…letting over 100 teenagers loose there isn’t appropriate in my opinion. Sadly, drinking and drugs are part of our culture. Research and studies show kids from all walks of life, smart kids, good kids, etc. are drinking and taking drugs. Sad but true. Even if Natalee didn’t partake, it’s only reasonable to suggest a good portion of the kids did. Group think in a celebratory environment with no parents is a deadly combination wherever it happens. The recent news stories about trips to Mexico by kids from Texas are another example of this dreadful state of affairs.

I personally think school trips have gotten way out of hand. Even for younger kids they plan trips out of the country to all kinds of fancy and exotic places!

If Natalee is dead maybe one of her legacies will be to force parents and kids to assess class trips and parties of all kinds.

look. Hoover guy. Just b/c MB has a higher gross income than other B’ham municipalities doesn’t mean parents raise their children any different…

the personal responsibility lies on the perpetrators of the crimes who didn’t know how to conduct themselves as living, breathing human beings but as animals instead.

      Hoover guy has the typical “They’re Brookies” attitude…and it’s getting old. You’re from Hoover-come on-you don’t know.

    379. K in TX on June 11th, 2005 10:35 pm

OK, for those of us without access to a television right now, can you give us a brief low-down? The only thing they *are* confirming is that blood was found in the car? Anything else? I’m afraid I’m getting a little lost here. Thanks!

    380. Ronald on June 11th, 2005 10:35 pm

If you PUT YOURSELF in a dangerous situation, you most certainly have some degree of culpability.

If I decided to go running through a ghetto with a $250,000 diamond watch on, I’d “definitely” have some responsibility in the event that I wound up being mugged.

There are two ways in which to deal with the world. You can deal with the world as it OUGHT TO BE, or you can deal with the world AS IT IS.

Sure, a young girl should be able to get stinking drunk at a party and have nothing happen to her.

Sure, I should be able to drive into a gang-infested ghetto in a bentley at 3 o’clock in the morning..

Sure, I should be able to wave an American flag in Fallujah and have nothing happen to me.

BUT YOU KNOW WHAT? That’s not the way the world works, and if you choose to deal with the world as it ought to be–as opposed to dealing with the world as it is–you’ll be in for a world of hurt.

Hey DON’T BLAME THE VICTIM, totally off the subject, but I’m glad you made it out!! I understand, trust me.

    384. arubagirl on June 11th, 2005 10:36 pm

dragon, I would say that we don’t know more than a few days ago, except with more people in custody. It could be that the FBI and the Aruba Police Force are just sitting on assses, too. I’m trying to embrace all points of view here. My personal opinion, based on what I’ve previously seen other cases is that it’s usual for the prosecution to be pretty quiet. The fact that it now seems that CNN wasn’t right and the U.S. media is willing to jump at anything, makes them clam up more, I think.

K….blood in the car belonging to someone is about all the evidence they ahve (or are admitting to).

    391. dontblamethevictim on June 11th, 2005 10:38 pm

wow Ronald. You’re a real “the glass is half empty” type of guy aren’t you? You sound like lots of fun to hang out with. lol

BTW, I live in the gang-infested ghetto. If a guy rides through in a Bentley, it’s general knowledge that you leave him the hell alone because he probably has a good cache of weapons with him to defend that Bentley!

stop blaming the victim and blame the perpetrator. It’s their parents who didn’t do their job.

    392. arubagirl on June 11th, 2005 10:38 pm

Thanks JC… my ex (THE ex) got married today, so I consider today my official independence day. I tried to warn the blushing bride but it didn’t work, so I guess she’ll have to learn the hard way.

It took me 10 years, from the age of 15-25 to get out. Glad to say I did and made it out alive! :)
