Crime reporter Peter R de Vries has been nominated for an prestigious Emmy award for his covert tv interview with Joran van der Sloot in January this year.
In the tv show, Van der Sloot appeared to admit involvement with the disappearance of US teenager Natalee Holloway on the island of Aruba in 2005.

I have mixed emotions about Peter’s motives. I’m sure monetary factors were a motivator but then again, the guy does have guts. Guts in the fact that he sat at the table with that demonic Joran. When Joran threw wine in his face, it might have been a good time to jump across the table and introduce Joran to at least 3 knuckle sandwiches (I might have done that. At 15 there is no doubt I would have).
Peter has bold, impudent behavior in that he is willing to question the whole story that Joran is telling. Everyone else acts scarred, maybe for good reasons. There is some real evil there (with Joran, family, etc.) that I can’t quite grasp. I think probable Crossbow and Grande come close to understanding, but I just don’t quite get it, and there are some things I won’t say out loud.

Peter DeVries has not been nominated for an Emmy.
His shows were submitted to be considered for an International Emmy nomination along with other shows from many different countries.
It was done exactly as it is done in the United States. Producers of shows submit their shows for consideration for Emmy’s. The actual nominations will be announced later this year.

He solved the case ???? This is it..? Does anyone know if Beth and Dave feel the case is now solved ? In a way it does cover all the loose ends, I guess…. Joran stated she died and that someone took her body out to sea and her remains will never be found….Early in June 2005 I read that if the body was taken far enough out in the ocean the currents would carry it toward the western coast of Africa. Maybe that is part of the reason the Persistence crew pulled out. Maybe the crab trap was a red herring….it seemed to me to be a foolish way to dispose of a body…all the evidence stowed in one place… I just don’t know….would like to hear what others think about this.

I have a few old friends from “the day” who never got married and still try to put on the bathing suit and go to tropical locales. All I have ever heard from them is what a dump Aruba is ! This was decades before Natalee’s case. Apparently the place is such a dump that they have to cater to the cruise ships and underage drinking crowd. I totally agree with you. I feel that Peter was a wet dream by Rob Smith. The seedy life of Aruba would be discovered if the truth of what happened to Natalee was disclosed. IMHO this was a scheme by the ATA to try some kind of closure.
Peter in my estimation is a mole. I don’t get too many good vibes about DeVries either. My feeling is if Beth could be convinced that Joran was with Natalee and was responsible; then Beth would be satisfied. To bury Natalee at sea has a somewhat ceremonious connotation. It would be similar to sailors and burials at sea. If Beth in her mind would bring closure then that would be sufficient to alleviate the boycott that was requested. Beth and Dave both said show us where Natalee is and bring her or her remains back to Alabama and you (Aruba) can do what you want with the suspects. Well obviously if Natalee were in the sea there is no bringing her remains back to Alabama. So does this mean that Dave and Beth now have closure? I won’t give you my answer. What is yours?

Crossbow and Jerry. I can see somewhat of your surmation, but, then why have the case propped up, again for scrunity on Peter’s story? Don’t you think that what Beth has been through in Aruba, she could smell Peter as a rat?
As an example of what may have been in store for Natalee but “SOMETHING WENT WRONG” please review the case of Joyce Buckley that was seen getting into a car with some locals and disappeared. Yeh; disappeared until the mother immediately cried boycott. All of a sudden after much searching they found Joyce in her mother’s bed; smelly, drunk and obviously drugged. Amazing how the police found her so quickly. But no one explained how she got back to her room unseen by people and cameras. BTW they were staying at the Holiday Inn.
She can’t remember what happened or how she got back. Never heard anything further. Was she a victim of the monthly grab a tourist, drug her and bring her to an underground place to have sex with her?
Then return her to her hotel with no memory of what happened?
This may have been an early party as the end of the month was New Years; Natalee was the last Sunday of the month. Everything I read about tourist on Aruba is something happening at the end of the month.!!! STRANGE????

I don’t know if it’s possible outright to dismiss the deVries efforts as manipulation by Aruba … after all, you can equally well say that Aruba’s interest was best served by letting Natalee’s case remain obscure. There hadn’t been much media coverage for some time.
Besides, putting Joran back in the spotlight only increased anger at Aruba, and that this scum is still walking around free.
So I think it’s just too facile to write off the whole thing as a conspiracy.
But what I see as the Achilles heel is … there is no confirmation of anything that Joran says.
Does anyone believe that the Kalpoes had nothing to do with Natalee’s disappearance? I don’t.
Does anyone believe that this “Daury” would suddenly come at Joran’s beck and call? I don’t.
Considering the lies that Joran has told since day one … and, in my estimate, the strong likelihood that he is psychopathic … I don’t see his latest story as necessarily any more reliable than any of his other lies.

i’ve read alot about Peter deVries. he’s a very smart and gutsy man. he has done great things for many families with missing or murdered family members. I think he has known all along exactly what type of person Patrick van de em (sp) was but being the sleeze ball he is, Patrick could help Peter get what he needed to at least show the world what kind of psyco Joran is and re-open the case so that the whole world not forget. I think he made a great accomplishment showing that psyco joran spilling his guts (truth mixed with some lies). Still, somehow, I think Joran, for all his misgivings was made the scapegoat for Papa Psyco Sloot and others involved early on. My kudos to Peter deVries.

When I see Aruba, the only thing I think of is injustice done to Natalee and her family by lie after lie by J2K, their families and officials. Clearly justice was never an option. How could everything be tainted and every witness be lying except of course Dompig’s cousin, who did years in prison for drugs?
The whole thing reeks of a cover up from the moment Paulus claims he was sleeping and came to the door with his cell phone and led the police on a long goose chase away from the home. He eventually called Joran to get the ok to come home.
Just like the Caylee Anthony case.. Lies, Lies, Lies, fake alibis, wild goose chases, not searching, blaming someone else for a crime of kidnapping etc, lost phone, lots of phone calls and lawyering up right off. Great that unlike Natalee, Caylee has officials on her side.
Peter showed the world the real side of the people that Beth and Jug encountered their first night in Aruba, when right off Joran said I don’t even know Natalee or her name. Last I knew Martians aren’t real and you can’t leave the island without a passport. Anything in the water where Natalee was 2 miles out would wash back up, planes can’t land without clearance and logs, boats would be seen on radar.. 3 fishermen never saw them on the beach by the huts, no shoes of Joran’s or Natalee’s washing up or found, no witnesses seeing them on the beach. I always figured they planned on leaving her on that beach that night afterwards, but something bad happened. That beach was close to her hotel.

Peter had been to Aruba several times before wanting to solve the case, that was before he had even met Patrick. At least Joran was exposed for what he is.
The Netherlands, including people of Aruba have seen the video. The Dutch surrounded Joran’s grandmothers place, Joran said he was afraid to walk across the street and Aruba says he is not welcome there. So he takes off to Bangkok.
I do think Natalee died that night and I also believe she had seizures. Sander just happens to lose his cell phone. So where are all the cell phone records for everyone, missing just like everything else. I think Natalee is in the ocean and the Gottenbos boat was used to put her there..

Joran has been exposed as being a liar the WHOLE time. Patrick reminded people about what a liar he is… for that we’re grateful. But Beth and Peter never had anything to do with the outcome.

It, really, bothers me that Joran went to Thailand. Who would EVER go there?! And… all this talk about planes and boats and passports? Sounds like a trafficker trying to paint a lie. What is all this clatter we hear from Caracao? They’re so sure that there was a plane sitting at the airport in Aruba… they’ve even accused Beth of chartering it! We know that’s not true, so who’s plane was it?
People can have seizures. That’s something that happens all the time. People don’t usually die from them and they, by themselves, rarely result in brain damage. Injuries and deaths, usually happen as a result of falling or thrashing about. Falling on a beach is not, usually, going to result in fatal injuries… and, unless Natalee had a history of having VERRRRY long seizures; chances are, she didn’t die from one. To say that someone came by and picked her up and he didn’t know if she was alive or dead is passing the buck… doing what Paulus is good at.
He covered ALL his bases. If we are to believe him, Natalee dead or alive, is not his responsibility. Does that sound plausible?

If Joran had Natalee put in the ocean… why would he tell us about it? So we could go searching? Given all the magic they seem to practice on the island; now you see it, now you don’t… there’s no telling what they might do to take the pressure off. Why? Because the trafficking of women was something that Paulus did, using his job in immagration. She could, very well, still be alive… and Joran is hoping that one day we’ll forget and move on.

And to be honest, I don’t think the Dutch were surrounding Joran’s grandmother’s house. Maybe there were some gawkers and people trying to see the “celebrity” … remember, Aruba told us about all the thousands of civil servants who went out searching for Natalee when they got time off.
An AP article said that only a few hundred showed up, only for an hour or two … and they were at San Nicolas, totally on the other end of the island from where Natalee was last seen!
So I’m leery of what the papers say on this one. That, of course, doesn’t rule out whatever Patrick says … but he seems dodgy to me at best.

Well Benh, if you read some of my postings, you weren’t paying attention.
If Natalee was raped and murdered, I’m certainly not happy that the person(s) who did it, got away with it. I do think JvdS was involved, I’m not sure whether he spoke the truth (either way) in de car with Patrick van der Eem and I do think that the Aruban justice department scr*wed up the case (whether intentionally or not).
However I do feel that the information and messages on this forum are suggestive, biased, hateful to the Aruban people, incorrect and a lot of times unsubstantiated.
Queen Beatrix has nothing to do with this case and is not authorized to get involved. The Dutch authorities could not get involved except if they were to be invited by the Aruban authorities.
Furthermore, it seems that a lot of monkeys are not open to any other opinion/theory than the ones they are ventilating themselves.
I do not understand why people here think it is strange that JvdS wasn’t arrested after his so-called confession to Patrick.
First because pursuant to Dutch law, the sole confession of someone is not enough evidence (and the fact that JvdS lied all the time neither) to convict someone. Further, because if the confession was believed, he could only be charged with getting rid of a corps. After all, JvdS claims that Natalee died of ‘natural’ cause.

Hello, just an update from the Netherlands.
It has become extremely quiet about Joran and his family in the netherlands. Nobody is willing to say : “case closed”, but as you all know, the Dutch legal system works with the concept no-body-no-case.
On top : I consider it very, very childish, to ask Amster020 if he is having sex with animals. Really. Especially if you read Amster02 comments before. Some of you are just as psycho as Joran… and defenitely less literate then him !
I’m not saying that people weren’t in the vicinity of the house. But the Dutch media tried to portray them (from what I recall) as a group of angry people aroused by what they saw on the deVries show.
Such a statement certainly works to deVries’ advantage, as it gives the impression that his show is so important.
But I suspect they were there just as gawkers and curiosity seekers. If a major crime is reported anywhere, people will check out the location if it is in their area. And in today’s celebrity culture, where being on TV is tantamount to being an object of popular interest, someone is sure to be checking it out. “I seen ‘em myself!”
However, if any of these Dutch enthusiasts for justice have done anything in the case, I don’t know of it. (That, of course, doesn’t prove that they haven’t.) My guess: they just wanted to have a look.

Even if he didn’t touch Natalee, he is still responsible for the actions of his underaged son. His actions of cover-up, deceit, hampering, etc. also make him equally as guilty. Guilty, guilty, guilty, on all accounts, guilty!
If you follow the money trail, it’s long, wide, green, and goes with anything a lady would care to wear. I wish someone would add it all up. All the traveling Joran, Paulus, and Anita have done in the last 3 years is astronomical. Don’t get me wrong…Joran and company are up to this to their eyeballs too.
Natalee Holloway was physically and sexually assaulted by the pimps – including Joran’s own admission that he was sexually assaulting Natalee while she went in and out of consciousness…..as well as Aruba levying charges on Guido for ‘heavy battery’ (‘scuse me…but you don’t levy ‘heavy battery’ charges on someone unless you have some evidence — not to mention Guido lawyering up with Europe’s ‘Dream Team’ caliber lawyer).
Paulus was the guy that was called in when the pimps didn’t know what to do with the gravely injured Natalee. Paulus took things from there.
Very little is talked about in the evidence about JVDS boarding a bus at 6:30am near his step brothers house….or about PVDS calling into the school to have the bus pick up his little angel.
None of PVDS cell phone records – or even the records of his other son’s “lost” cell phone from that evening – have been researched or publicly disclosed.
It all comes together when one watches Paulus covering his head with a coat and sprinting from cameras. That is not how an innocent person acts.
Then, we have Aruban justice system doing everything possible to distance Paulus from the case (from having judges who were overwhelmingly conflicted put through orders that ‘layered the onion’ making it next to impossible to prosecute PVDS for his crimes) to Karin Janssen’s letter releasing Paulus as a suspect (a letter she never wrote for the two black guys she had tried to frame with ‘strong evidence’).
It is clear – Aruba made no efforts to establish PVDS timeline for the evening. Why would they publish Joran’s and the Kalpoes’ timelines…but not the timeline of the guy that was hitting on her at the casino just hours before she disappeared (ummm…or was that the cook with the identical hairline, white shirt, and watch as PVDS)?
Paulus was ultimately responsible for the death and disappearance of Natalee Holloway and everyone on Aruba did their best to cover up in the name of protecting tourism….what a miscalculation.
Amsterdam and others — when PVDS is brought to justice then I will let up on Aruba. But until then, the government and the people will continue to suffer from the relentless boycott.

The real story here is the Aruban cover-up. Son of a Justice Minister (judge) not investigated for 10 days after girl goes missing…yet he was the last one seen with her.
The kid fingers two poor black guys who, if it wasn’t for the intense media pressure and attention, would have served time for the misconduct of the kid.
This whole story has been an attempt to cover up misconduct of the Dutch elite kid. Arubans should be ashamed of their government and justice system. Tourism should not return until those governmental bodies step up and tell the world how they tried to cover-up and how they will never, ever, again attempt to coverup a murder on their island.

Was pretty clear back then that something wasn’t right. By the 19th of June I was calling for PVDS to be arrested — and he was coincidentally arrested a few days later.
The only mistake that was made – hindsight being 20/20 – is that Aruba should have been given until June 30th, 2005 to come clean or face the wrath of an overwhelming boycott that will forever destroy tourism.
Instead, Aruba was allowed to dick around for a year before the boycott started to gain some steam. Allowing PVDS and the justice system to map out how they would distance him from the case.
The writing was on the wall on June 10th, 2005.

If, in fact, Papa Sloot picked up his kid at 3:00am, Papa Sloot was driving the getaway car. This is more than enough to hold him on suspicion (keep in mind, two unemployed black fella’s got held because Junior lied to investigators…so, holding Papa should be a slam dunk).

The Holloway/Twitty’s should keep their media blitz going. Without it…the case is cooked.
Aruban Law Enforcement should keep doing the things they are doing until the media finally tires and just goes away. Send divers out by the lighthouse, go dig up some dirt by the tennis club, keep the appearance like they are looking. Once the media goes away…throw the files in a cabinet and move on.
That my friend….is exactly how this case is going to play out. ALE must continue to feign investigation for the benefit of the media and wait this one out. md

Here’s an update on the Canadian story I posted above. It’s an interesting read: apparently, in following up on the cases of two abducted girls, they found a third who had been held prisoner for a year.
Of course, this does not prove anything about Natalee’s case … and we know that this sort of thing cannot happen to an American, even in Aruba.
There are no street gangs, or middle-class “Pimps” trying to pose as them, in Aruba.
There are no unethical people with connections to them, either.
And there is no sub-culture of prostitution, porn, or characters who are in criminal cliques.
Canada, maybe … but not in Aruba. The culture is as clean and unpolluted as can be imagined.
The law enforcement is efficient, with not a whiff of corruption. And the people are united in their zeal to protect the well-being of tourists.
So we can write off this scenario, can’t we.
(I’m not saying that this is the case, but I’m not dismissing it. Three years later, there’s still no sign of Natalee … and we continue to hear stories from the ‘psychopath’ Joran.
And I don’t think it’s important who is, or who claims to be, the first to make any call. The interest is in getting answers for Natalee.

GATINEAU – A couple accused of luring three girls off Ottawa streets and forcing them into prostitution will likely soon face charges of human trafficking, an offence that carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.Laura Emerson, 28, and her boyfriend, Gordon John Kingsbury, 33, appeared in court briefly yesterday for a scheduled bail hearing, but the two were remanded until Tuesday because their lawyers said they needed more time to examine new evidence against the pair.
Ms. Emerson was charged with 13 offences, including kidnapping, forcible confinement, procuring and living off the avails of prostitution after the police gangs section discovered that three teenage girls had been held captive for up to a year in a condominium building on Alexandre-Taché Boulevard.
Mr. Kingsbury is charged with sexual assault and being unlawfully at large.Lawyers for Ms. Emerson and Mr. Kingsbury said they want to make sure they know all the evidence the Crown plans to present at trial before proceeding with the case.
Investigators said Wednesday that one 17-year-old girl they believed was an accomplice turned out to be a victim who had been held prisoner for a year. Two other 17-year-old girls are alleged to have been held for five to six months while they engaged in prostitution.Gatineau’s assistant Crown attorney Diane Legault said yesterday the two accused will probably face new charges, including human trafficking.
In November 2005, the Criminal Code was amended to make the “recruitment, transporting, transferring, receipt, holding, concealment or harbouring of a person, or the exercise of control, direction or influence over the movements of a person for the purpose of exploiting them or facilitating their exploitation” an indictable offence.Conviction carries a maximum possible sentence of life imprisonment where it involves kidnapping, aggravated assault or aggravated sexual assault, or a maximum penalty of 14 years in all other cases.
It was also made an indictable offence to benefit financially or otherwise from the trafficking of a person and to destroy records to facilitate the trafficking of persons. Those offences carry maximum sentences of 10 and five years in prison, respectively.
“The sections that deal with procuring minors appeared only a few years ago and they are serious charges,” Ms. Legault said. “They were added to the Code to protect minor boys and girls from being taken and forced into prostitution.”
Ottawa police said the sexual exploitation of young people is part of a disturbing new trend that has seen gang members approach females and males as young as 14 in attempts to recruit them into prostitution.
Gatineau police spokeswoman Const. Isabel Poirier said the victims were vulnerable teenagers recruited near supportive housing for young women and women’s shelters between Nelson Street and the Ottawa Mission on Waller Street.
Police allege that one girl tried to escape but was dragged back to a condominium on Alexandre-Taché Boulevard where she was beaten and tied up for 10 days.The police street gangs unit raided an apartment building on that street on July 28 after another girl escaped and asked a passerby for help.
Gatineau police believe they have uncovered a gang-related prostitution network that preys on vulnerable teens because the adults charged have connections to the Ledbury Banff Crips street gang although they are not gang members. Both of the accused are known to police.
Ms. Emerson’s lawyer, Jean Bourget, said he is certain the Crown has disclosed no evidence linking his client with any street gang. She pleaded not guilty to an unrelated charge of narcotics possession but did not enter a plea on the kidnapping, forcible confinement or prostitution charges.
“New evidence was discovered yesterday which changes how we have to prepare our case,” Mr. Bourget said.
“We want complete disclosure from the Crown so that we will be ready for the bail hearing.”Every event has more than one version of what happened. Obviously we are getting only the version of the prosecution at this point, which is normal.
“My client will put up a vigorous defence and we will avail ourselves of every right that the system provides in order to get her version of the events out at the appropriate time.”Mr. Bourget said there could be a bail hearing for the two accused next Thursday.
Sunny Marriner, who has worked for the Sexual Assault Support Centre for 11 years, said teenage prostitution would not be such a problem if men did not demand sex with young girls.
“This is hugely invisible to most of the public in my experience,” Ms. Marriner said. “There is an incentive to do this to young women when there is a demand in the community and there is a demand from men willing to pay for sex with younger girls. “Economically, if no one demanded sex from 13-year-old girls, this problem wouldn’t exist. That is the part that nobody ever discusses, because people don’t know how to resolve it, so we tend to focus on teaching the young women on how to protect themselves.”
Ms. Marriner said sexual assault is often used to force young women into prostitution. She added the police have known for years that street gangs are often involved in the practice.
Just one more note about the above: the ending of the article addresses supply and demand. Demand creates the need to fill the supply.
Suppose that there were demand for a young blond girl, one who was glamorous looking? And suppose that supply were not available to meet demand ….
Horrible suppositions. And as the article says, “This is hugely invisible to most of the public.”
But as I said above, this can’t happen to an American. So we can dismiss it.

There’s an update to the Canadian story that I posted above. Seems that people who know the ‘street world’ aren’t surprised by the tale at all … note the comment about how easy it is for someone to go missing for a year without anybody noticing.
Apparently in Ottawa there are street gangs to which this sort of thing is routine.
Well, that’s Ottawa, and Canada, a lawless land.
No such gangs can thrive in a well-regulated place like Aruba, where the police are honest and capable, the respect for law is extreme, and drug traffic, money laundering, and such are unknown.
And besides, it can’t happen to an American.

Workers at shelters in Ottawa have been talking to the teenage girls who stay there about the case of three girls allegedly lured from near an Ottawa shelter and forced into prostitution in Gatineau. And they are maintaining high security as usual while the case unfolds, says the acting director of an Ottawa shelter for young women.
“We make sure we engage the young people about any event that may affect them,” said Stacey Laurdney Thursday. “We talk about … what measures they can take and how they’re feeling and how this impacts them.”

Two adults, Laura Emerson, 28, and Gordon Kingsberry, 33, appeared briefly in court in Gatineau on Thursday in relation to allegations that three 17-year-old girls were abducted, assaulted, drugged, confined and forced into prostitution for up to a year.
Charges facing Emerson include forcible confinement, aggravated assault and procuring prostitution from minors, while Kingsberry faces two counts of sexual assault. The Crown has indicated they may also be charged with human trafficking.
Laurdney said his shelter has a lot of security built in.
“We have cameras, we have 24-hour staffing, we don’t publish our address, we talk to young women on a daily basis about their experiences and we’re proactive about those issues of safety.”
The shelter also has a good relationship with police, and report young women staying at the shelter missing if they do not return when expected.
However, he acknowledged that many of the young women who use the shelter are vulnerable to predators, as they have no supports in lives, haven’t developed many positive relationships with adults, and often aren’t getting their basic needs met.
Emily, 25, who has been using shelters since she was in her teens, agreed that it’s hard to leave a shelter without someone noticing, as many require the women who stay there to sign in and out.

However, that is not the case for street youth in general.
“For someone to go disappearing for a year, it can easily happen without anyone really noticing.”
She said young women on the street like herself are often approached by men and she’s not surprised to hear about the case in Gatineau.
Ottawa Police Sgt. Reno Rushford said teenage girls on the street are regularly lured into prostitution by pimps, who usually begin by offering them gifts such as clothes, money and drugs.
“At some point though, the stoplight goes up and these people say, ‘OK in the last couple of weeks you’ve been given all this stuff. Time for payback,’ ” he said. “The worst case scenario, they’re turned out to prostitute themselves.”
He said the Gatineau case is also not the first time girls have been held somewhere against their will.
Rushford said it is difficult to estimate how many girls are involved in prostitution because many are too afraid to talk.
“The difficulty is for them to come forward with it and relive it all through court and be put in that position, possibly put themselves in danger in regards to telling on these people.”
Yet another issue … a few days ago, the president of Mexico called for more severe penalties for kidnapping. As the story below makes clear, one big problem is that the wealthy, whose families are the most likely victims, don’t trust the police.
Why not? It seems that many of the police are working hand in glove with the kidnappers.
That’s in Mexico, of course, not Aruba. The police of Aruba don’t get involved in drugs or underworld activities and have no corruption.
Good we know this … otherwise some of us might wonder about the inexplicable and as-yet unexplained remark by Dennis Jacobs to Dave Holloway: “How much money have you got?”

Mexico’s leftist opposition may denounce the administration of President Felipe Calderón as a government of the rich, but the rich are not so sure. In fact, they’re rapidly losing confidence in the state’s ability to ensure their physical safety. And the reasons for their skepticism were made clear in the recent kidnapping and murder of a 14-year-old and the arraignment of two police officers in the case.
A week ago, the decomposed body of Fernando Martí, son of the Mexican businessman Alejandro Martí, who last year sold his chain of fitness clubs for $562 million, was found inside the trunk of a parked car in Mexico City. Near the body was a note, which read, “For not paying, yours truly La Familia.”
The boy had been asphyxiated more than a month earlier, having been kidnapped some 53 days previously when the armored vehicle in which he was being driven was stopped at what appeared to be a checkpoint of the AFI, Mexico’s Federal Agency of Investigations. The kidnappers wore AFI uniforms and insignia, according to information revealed to police by a bodyguard who survived to tell the tale. The body of the driver had been sent to the family soon after the snatch to demonstrate the seriousness of the kidnappers.
But the note left with Fernando Martí’s body lied: His family had paid a ransom of more than $2 million. And after the money was handed over, they heard nothing, so they went to the offices of the attorney general and the secretary of public security, as well as to President Calderón. Heads rolled: the deputy attorney general in charge of investigating organized crime was reassigned, while the attorney general and the secretary of public security had a very public fight during a Security Cabinet meeting, each blaming the other for the deteriorating security situation in the country.
According to the newspaper Reforma, last year there were some 438 kidnappings in Mexico. But the secretary for public security has revealed that this year’s figures so far show an 80% increase. And those are only reported kidnappings — Mexico’s Human Rights Commission believes that fewer than one in three kidnappings are ever reported to the authorities, because so many Mexicans have little confidence in a law-enforcement system riddled with criminal elements.
The AFI is the Mexican federal agency tasked with investigating kidnappings, but since so many of its members have been implicated in criminal acts, victims have little confidence in its ability to protect them. Fernando Martí, after all, was taken at what appeared to be an AFI checkpoint. Amid the public outrage generated by the case, the local authorities in Mexico City suspended all law-enforcement checkpoints in the city. Two of the three suspects arraigned in the case were active-duty policemen, one of them reportedly a senior figure in the force.
Mexicans have come to see police corruption and complicity in crime as a way of life. Last week, an entire family was found murdered in Jalisco, in what state authorities say was a botched kidnapping involving a policeman serving in an anti-kidnapping unit. Says Alejandro Gertz Manero, Dean of the University of the Americas and a former attorney general, “There is a collusion of the criminals with the police, and what is the worst is that there is impunity — 99% of the cases go unsolved. So there is only a 1% chance of being caught, and even then, probably remaining free, because the local prosecutors are also corrupt.”
For wealthier Mexicans, and even those not so wealthy, kidnapping has become an everyday reality. According to sources monitoring the situation, there are currently dozens of families negotiating for the return of kidnapped loved ones. Most families respond to a kidnapping by sending an interlocutor to negotiate with the kidnappers — the millionaire may engage a high-end private security firm; the market vendor may send a cousin — and then pay a ransom.
The preponderance of kidnapping and the general perception that the police cannot be trusted are symptoms of the breakdown of Mexican law enforcement in the face of a highly militarized narco-trafficking industry with billions of dollars to splash on buying loyalty. That, combined with a media culture that has drawn increasing attention to the lifestyles of the country’s élite amid a deteriorating economy, has meant that wealth in Mexico today carries with it a heavy burden of anxiety.
“The rich should be more careful,” warns National University social science professor Carlos Gallego, referring to a plethora of magazines that depict a free-spending lifestyle of “polo and yacht clubs, exclusive parties, cars, horses and trips,” a lifestyle he says is “unattainable for 98% of the Mexican population in a country where more than 42% live under the poverty line.” He is careful to make clear that this lifestyle is not in itself a reason for the increase in kidnappings, but he argues that it is another factor of the social discontent that contributes to the breakdown of institutions in Mexico.
The victims of the kidnapping surge see little hope of the government turning things around anytime soon. At the Martí funeral last Sunday, expressions of anger, fear and impotence were the norm. Alfredo Harp, who had been kidnapped by a leftist guerrilla group in the early ’90s before being freed after the payment of a ransom said by family sources to be more than $50 million, stood next to the bereaved father, as did a number of other kidnapping victims from the business community. The talk in this community is increasingly focused on taking matters into their hands in the face of government ineffectiveness.
A business leader who survived a kidnapping and asked not to be named told TIME: “What are we to do? Get the Israelis as bodyguards? Somebody else was mentioning using American Special Forces, as they are being demobilized and are more serious. Do we have to have our own paramilitary forces? We have to be organized, as the government obviously is not. I am sending my family to the U.S.” His sentiments are common in gatherings of the wealthy, where options under discussion range from emigration to buying a smaller house and less ostentatious car — and, of course, investing more heavily in private security.

I try to come here everyday to keep saying over and over justice for Natalee.. Aruba’s strategy is to delay, deny and drag it out till people go away. That has just made me more determined to keep saying it.
IMO I haven’t seen anything to convince me Natalee was alive after her last night in Aruba.. I have seen much to indicate she wasn’t.
Interesting story at the end of Geraldo’s show tonight.. Leda Cordes missing in St. Maarten’s since January(?) Last seen by her husband, Frank. They got in a fight he said and she walked 3/4′s a mile to the casino and was never seen again. Last seen alive by her husband. Neighbor said that night he saw her in the car where they were staying and she was so drunk, she didn’t even recognize the neighbor. Husband is the last one to see her alive.
Report also said her husband, Frank, was fascinated by the Natalee Holloway case and believed the suspects got away with murder in Aruba.
It had an FBI number to call…the spokesman is from a group of Friends of Leda. He said a group from Texas took Cadaver dogs to search once. He said he walked that road Leda was suppose to have walked and he don’t believe she walked it in the dark and not that great..

It appears the case of Mission Viejo resident Leta Cordes is still cold on St Martin. Recently the search team received a report of bones found on the French side of the island. The bones were determined to be animal, not human, according to the Daily Herald.

Would you care to elaborate and share with us your theory? It would be appreciated.
What we KNOW about Natalee’s case is that she went off in a car with three locals. Whatever happened, happened in the course of a few hours.
That’s what is definite. And that’s about it, except for a string of lies (beginning with the prepared story by the three last seen with her) ever since and a total maze of contradictory stories. And a closing of the ranks on the part of Aruba, who infuriated the FBI by their unwillingness to use them as serious partners.
Lots of reason to think that Joran is, at the least, seriously disturbed. We know that from the testimony of the four Dutch detectives who interviewed him, as well as from his reported actions going back for some years.
It’s also been reported that his girlfriend, Steff, worked for escort services. This isn’t hard and fast evidence of anything, as far as I know, but could be suggestive … and could provide insight into a possible motive for Joran’s intransigent lying and evasions.
Here’s a story from this morning. Seems that some vicious activity is possible in the Caribbean and nearby … some would rule out trafficking. How many cases like this do you see?
US Tourist Hacked to Death in Guatemala

GUATEMALA CITY (Aug. 10) – Robbers armed with machetes hacked a U.S. tourist to death and seriously wounded his wife in an attack aboard the couple’s sailboat in northeastern Guatemala, the woman told The Associated Press on Sunday.
In a telephone interview from her hospital bed, Nancy Dryden, 67, said her husband, Daniel Perry Dryden, 66, was killed by four men who boarded their boat late Saturday while it was anchored in Lake Izabal.
“They poked us and stabbed us with the machetes, and they were asking for money, specifically dollars,” said Dryden, who was listed in stable condition at a hospital in the lakeside town of Morales.The thieves were apparently unhappy with the take. “We had a few quetzales (Guatemala’s currency), but we had no dollars with us on the boat,” Dryden recounted.
The Drydens, who are retired and live near Anchorage, Alaska, had bought the boat in February. They were equipping the vessel in preparation for a voyage into the Caribbean and eventually to the eastern coast of the United States. Dryden said the four assailants may have reached the boat by swimming from shore and brandished long machetes that “seemed liked curved swords.”
After assaulting the couple, the men demanded she hand over the keys to the vessel, which has an auxiliary motor. When she didn’t — she was unable to tell whether they wanted the keys to the boat, or a small dinghy the couple used to get to shore — the men left, also apparently by swimming.
Dryden struggled over to the boat’s radio and sent out a distress call. “I said we need help … I said my husband was not moving,” Dryden recalled.She said she expects her children to arrive in Guatemala Monday and plans to be transferred to the United States for medical care.
Assistant Police Commissioner Luis Say said the attack is being investigated. Located near Guatemala’s Caribbean coast, Lake Izabal is popular among tourists for its jungle scenery and wildlife.

In re the general phenomenon of trafficking, an Australian paper last week published this article on the case of Madeleine McCann. I trust that we all remember her, the 4-year-old British girl who vanished in Portugal.
This article frankly gives me the shivers. Doesn’t prove anything, and of course the case is much different from that of Natalee … but anyway, give it a read. It is of course possible that the woman reporting this sighting is off her bean … but it’s also possible that she isn’t.
Interesting that this reported sighting should take place in the Netherlands, known to be the home to a big child porn industry. And we remember the child kidnapper and murdered Ducroix in adjacent Belgium….

A GIRL looking like missing British girl Madeleine McCann was seen in an Amsterdam shop with an odd couple – and told an assistant: “They took me from my holiday”, British media have reported.
The child – the same age as Madeleine and with distinctive “huge” eyes – spoke English and called herself Maddie, The Sun said today.
The couple, who said they were from a circus, brought the girl into the party goods shop days after Maddie went missing from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal.
Store assistant Anna Stam, 41, alerted Amsterdam cops just over a month later after reading about Maddie’s disappearance on the internet – and realising what she may have witnessed. Days later, on June 18 last year, Dutch police informed Portuguese detectives.
Private detectives working for the McCanns were to go to Amsterdam to follow up the lead, The Sun said.
“If it was Madeleine, it was a disgrace that it was not passed on. We need to know what happened with this,” a family spokesman said.
The revelation about the sighting is contained in the 20,000 police files on the Maddie case released by the Portuguese authorities.
Ms Stam said the couple had two noisy children with them but she noticed another little girl standing at the back of the shop.
She told the police in her statement: “She was three to four years old. She had straight dark brown hair in a ponytail. Her hair reached her shoulders or possibly a little further. She had a pallid face and huge eyes which were very noticeable.
“She had a dark look but I don’t think she had dark brown eyes. I think they were green-brown. What caught my attention was the fact that she showed little or no emotion.
“Then the little girl stood before me and asked me in English, ‘Do you know where my mummy is?’ I answered that her mother was a little bit further back in the shop and she answered, ‘She is not my mummy.’
“I asked her who the woman was and she said, ‘She is a stranger, she took me from my mummy.’ I noticed the little girl spoke good English without an accent. Next I asked the little girl what her name was and she said, ‘My name is Maggie.’ At least that’s what I thought she said. When I repeated it, the little girl said, ‘No, my name is Maddie’.
“I still remember that because I thought it was a rare name. I then asked her where she had last seen her mother and she answered, ‘They took me from my holiday’.”
Caught on CCTV
The police files also reveal that a little girl was caught on CCTV in a shop near Praia da Luz just just hours after Maddie vanished but Portuguese police never showed the film to her parents.
The footage, made public yesterday, covers a possible sighting of Maddie in Albufeira on the morning of May 4 last year, hours after she went missing.
A girl resembling Maddie is seen inside a petrol station behind a middle-aged man.
It is understood the man, driving a blue Renault, was eventually traced.
But the McCanns are said to be furious that they were never told about the film from the Repsol petrol station in Vale Paraiso.
“Kate and Gerry were not shown this image. Was it followed up and ruled out properly? We just don’t know,” their spokesman Clarence Mitchell told The Independent newspaper.

Finally found that site of Leta, wasn’t spelled Leda, Cordes .. Her and her husband were from California, She was 49. I think what they were trying to say last night is the husband was fascinated with the Natalee Holloway case and believed the suspects got away with murder so perhaps it could’ve been a copycat thing?
Casino camera’s showed she never was there. Husband said the mother was in the house, but only speaks German. He got in the car it said shorts, next he was in pajamas and drove the road to the casino to see if she made it ok and he didn’t see her so he assumed she did and he went back home. Next day, she wasn’t home so he went to the hotel to take her passport to her and they hadn’t seen her. She left her passport behind. They had been arguing he said. People magazine was doing stories on it and the response was lots more Americans killed or missing do those stories,(sounds familar) also reports the FBI weren’t allowed to help.
The guy last night (Michael Sheldon)said, Leta had a frail mother, she kept in contact with daily, a son that was about to get married and no way would she run away.
Like Julie Banderas said a few days ago on Fox.. Casey Anthony reminds her of the suspects in Aruba. I believe there is some truth in lies thought. I also believe Hans Mos when he said there are chat sessions prior to Natalee ever coming to Aruba of the suspects talking about getting young female American tourists and what they planned to do with them, which gave them some idea of how they operated.
They used new technology, that wasn’t availabe before to retrieve things from their computers. One of those was one of the 3 saying the fact the girl is dead isn’t good. Also, when Beth said the FBI told them it wasn’t looking good. They weren’t denying something bad happened to Natalee, they were just blaming it on each other.
One could say we all have differing opinions… and, trust me, we do. But there is
no denying we all are like babes being tossed by the waves of deception, by one
who is no better than Joran. The digging in of the heels and kicking of one while
he’s down, is no better than the crimes committed in Aruba. Are we to trust the
one that throws us a life preserver or join him in his spiral as his ship sinks?
Either way, you’re doomed. Does good come from bad or are we all just
machines that run to the one that APPEARS to be the strongest because he can
kick harder?
How many people have come here, being led by their desire to know the truth;
only to be kicked aside, being called a troll and belittled in the name of the one
they cheer for? How many witnesses are silenced and leave with a sigh of
bewilderment because their truth doesn’t match what is his preconceived notion?

in Aruba or, here, on Scared Monkeys. Are we to believe that every teenager on
the island who poses for a picture is guilty of the sins of only one? What about the
sins of his father?

you in the name of their magog… but, is he alive or is he dead? Isn’t the proof
buried in their works; their own desires to win the race, collect the money and be
handed the prize? There are those that wish death upon you just because of the
name you choose to post your statement. One who is lead astray by her own
conception that she is sooo much better than you. Evil and vile are the words she
uses to describe Aruba, while the spirit of hatred spews from her mouth… and she
doesn’t even know Natalee or the principals for which she lived. The truth falls on
deaf ears. She would have you believe there are demons… but they only live in
Aruba!
And, who hears the voices from all over the world? There is only one and it is His
glory that will be proclaimed at every mountain top and the furthest depths of the
sea. Do no put your trust in mortal man as his opinion can only reflect the
essence of his being, the road he’s traveled and his, selfish, opinion of truth. The
rocks will cry out, if no one else does, because all His ways are just and true. He
is the only one who can give you justice and, still, you will slap the hand that
feeds you. If He says go to the mountain top, it is there I shall be, but where are
my friends? Drowning in the deep, blue sea.

Isn’t it obvious, they killed her over and over hoping her family would just go
away? There is no truth in the lies. We can read them ’til we’re old and gray, but
still, she goes missing. “Who is Shango,” you ask, while Shango is gone… never
to be seen again. And you say, ‘don’t be afraid’. But… It is the wise one that has
fear in his heart and treads on still water.

Sorry, but I do believe there are bits of truth in lies.. Liars use bits of truth in their stories to make their lies appear more believable. Just like, when Joran says they were on the beach walking and Natalee told him she was from Alabama and going to college to be a doctor. I am sure at some point Natalee told him that or he heard it and used it to make other parts of his story seem believable. They usually mix a few facts in with lies, so others will believe them.

Don’t you understand?
You have to walk among the living. Save yourself and save your family. There’s nothing we can do about Natalee. There is no straight path to justice and even if you straighten the walls, it won’t change things in the case for Natalee.
Beth is a wonderful person, but look at the toll this has taken on her. Natalee was her daughter; she doesn’t have a choice about the things she has to concentrate on… but, we do. You need to cherish each and every day that you’re alive. Put your efforts into saving your own family from the boogey man… but go on. Time is precious. Life is, too, short. Don’t look back on your life and wish that you had spent more time on your own family and less on someone elses.
I admire your strength, your courage; but I question your ability to walk away and leave things to God. We can’t babysit the world… and there will be mysteries that will, forever, be unsolved. I pray for justice for Natalee, but, she would never expect you to mourn over her for so long. She’d live her life to the fullest… helping others… but only to a point.
I am leaving my cage. I have too much at risk and we are living in the time of the end. I have mountains to climb and refuse to be swept away in someone else’s current. The first rule of safety: Save yourself, then save others. There are lots of things that one can do to help others and there are plenty of others that need your help. Joran has, already, taken too much of our attention. He will meet his maker, one day, as we all will… but until that day, we must live on.

It’s not the simplest answer … on the other hand, it isn’t likely that someone would be held in a basement dungeon for 24 years, but that’s what happened to that woman in Austria (she’s on here, but I forget her name).
Anyway, that sailor (actually a petty officer) kept silent about his reported encounter with Amy for three years. His comment was that he thought it was some kind of a set-up.
Later on, back in the U.S., he saw Amy’s photo on the cover of an issue of People magazine and it clicked: that was the girl he had seen in Curacao, and who, when they were alone for a moment, asked him for his help and identified herself by name.
He then contacted the family. He later passed an FBI polygraph.
Patti, it may be that there is nothing that we can do for Natalee. Even if she were taken off Aruba, that doesn’t prove that she is still alive.
And the trafficking idea is no more than a theory (just like every other idea that is presented).
True, posting on blogs in and of itself does nothing. But two things have come of our concern.
One was the “boycott Aruba” protests that we have presented at Aruba Tourism Authority events. I believe that my efforts in getting these underway were well received, and had at least some effect.
The other is to remember: other potential Natalees are out there. It’s clear that Aruba offers no protection, and that neither our government nor businesses that profit from tourism (there and here) will speak out.
So it’s up to we the people.
In that sense, this blog has served and can serve as a rallying point. Many people here (and elsewhere) have given of their time and money to stand up for justice at a time when the powerful are silent.
That’s what really matters.
The best place to hide a body is a one that has already been searched.

My reference to the Austrian woman in post 72 was to Elizabeth Fritzl. Her father kept her confined in a basement dungeon for 24 years, starting in 1984, having sexually abused her previously. During her captivity, she was forced to bear seven children by her father. It was in April of this year that her captivity ended.
Hard to believe. Even harder to think that there was a similar case in Austria, but there was.
A schoolgirl, Natascha Kampusch, was kidnapped from a city street in 1988 and was held underground until she escaped in August 2006 when her captor was on the phone.
Figure the odds to all this going on in one country. It’s even more unlikely than somebody winning the Powerball lottery.
Yet from time to time, someone DOES win the Powerball lottery … and these cases DID happen.
I’d say that in a case where no crime scene has been confirmed, as in the case of Natalee Holloway, ruling this out as possible is foolish.
I’m keeping an open mind.

These people have no clue what it’s like to lose a child. Who cares whether Natalee is a little child or not? Still, she was robbed of her future. Natalee was the victim of crimes her last night in Aruba by people living in Aruba.. got it?
I havent visited this site for a while, but still thinking of Natalee and her family daily, is there any news about continuing the search of the sites located in the ocean??
