In Aruba a group of 500 to 1000 gathered yesterday morning to demonstrate for salary increases in front of the airport as incoming troubled tourists looked on. Think the protectors caused an inconvenience, you bet. What must tourists be thinking as they see the very people that provide their safety, security and conveniences on strike? Imagine getting off a plane for the first time and seeing this unrest. Think the tourists are asking themselves that they never remember this type of strife being discussed on the travel brochure. Aruba, think those tourists will ever be coming back again?

After the judge decided last Saturday that the public employees are allowed to demonstrate in front of the airport, a big group marched with banners, drums, and slogans from the Simar-building to the arrival- and departure terminals of the airport. The arriving passengers were troubled by this, because they couldn’t leave directly for their hotels by taxi. Spokesperson of AAA, Hendrik Croes, said that the tourists had to wait in the arrival hall for about 45 minutes and they were not very pleased with this. “The effect of the demonstration was the same as last time, when the intersection in front of the airport was blocked.’
People have asked why individuals are protesting Aruba in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. People have stated that a protest/boycott of Aruba only hurts the Aruban people who are not to blame for her disappearance or death. Aruba, life is not a one way street. Are not the protests by public employees harming all Arubans? Are not the protests harming tourists who have actually paid money to go a peaceful vacations only to have to encounter “troubling” issues.
What is most distasteful about the public employees strike is as follows. Everyone has the right to protest for what ever reason they deem important. However, it is almost unseemly that Arubans would come out in force and protest for higher wages, yet sit idly by on their hands when it came to protesting for “Justice for Natalee”. There is something just so distasteful and wrong about that very premise. Its obvious that Arubans know how to protest. Its also obvious that Arubans do not have an issue with protesting against their government. However, what also appears to be even more obvious is that the very island that begs for tourists to come to their “One Happy Island” also cares little to protest for justice if a tourist goes missing or dies there. There is something to ponder why contemplating a vacation.
New actions has started for this week (Amigoe: April 7, 2008)
Tourists were still troubled by the public employees’ protest march at the airport last Saturday. The public employees, among whom many teachers, hit the streets again this morning (picture right).
ORANJESTAD – A big group of public employees, about 500 to 1000, gathered again this morning to demonstrate for salary increases. Many teachers answered Simar’s call for strike. At the time this paper went to press, we had no idea of how many students didn’t have classes today due to the strike. None of the schools did close however.
In the meantime, the government and the public servant unions didn’t get one step closer to each other, after the unions made their ‘last proposal’ last Friday. “We reacted with four options on the proposal: another salary system; reorganization; oriented on performance; and/or core-job analysis to compromise and be able to pay for the indexation. We have also proposed to them to come with other ideas and/or conditions, to scrape together the money”, said lawyer Anthony Ruiz, who represents the National government. However, the unions insist that they do not want to come up with solutions; they only want the payment they are claiming. “The unions do not consider this their problem, thus the deadlock remains”, says Ruiz.
Chances are that government and union will meet each other again in court. Despite the court verdict of last week, the fire department is also going to join the actions tomorrow. The court has already considered prohibiting this department to go on strike, due to the fact that the department is already understaffed and the actions may not have consequences for the availability. “We already foresee problems due to the actions and we are studying the verdict”, says Ruiz, who didn’t want to say whether the government is really going to continue with a lawsuit.

AAA was a little disappointed with the verdict of the judge in the lawsuit that AAA, ATIA, and AHATA had instituted last Saturday. “The lawsuit was to prevent a blockade of the airport. This time around, the demonstrators were not allowed to block the intersection at the airport, but they still hindered the traffic again”, said Croes. However, as far as he is aware of, tourists have not missed connections with a cruise ship. AAA is not officially informed about tomorrow’s planned actions of customs, immigration, and fire department. “We have not received a letter, thus we know nothing officially.”

Yes, it would be extremely troubling to arrive at one’s vacation destination by air and find out that the air traffic controllers were on strike. It would also leave one wondering just how “great” the vacation would be with strikers all over the place, not knowing who else might be striking (restaurants, hotels, police). What a wonderful way to greet passengers. Keep it up Aruba. It’s great to see you working hard against your PR people.

American Airlines canceled 500 flights on Tuesday….they are not complying with the Federal Aviation Administration….the airlines hasn’t meet the wiring regulations on 300 planes….maybe there were flights canceled to and from Aruba…
We’ve seen protests against Beth saying the Kalpoes were criminals. We’ve seen protests about chollers. We’ve seen protests by police, in a country that boasts of very little crime, protest lack of overtime.@#$@??????? Nowhere does anyone care about the obvious coverup of a crime by the son of a (former) government employee. We’ve seen their priorities and the well being of tourists is not on that list.

The “authorities”, or whomever claims to be in “charge” of things on Aruba simply are overwhelmed by basics. I’m sure there has to be some level of education (?) on Aruba, if even by default. Why then doesn’t the powers that be recognize Aruba’s worldwide reputation is crumbling more & more daily like fragile eggs shells under the weight of public perception and scrutiny? It’s almost sad to see an entire Country being laughed at from actions by their own hand. They have absolutely no image worth a tinkers damn. All they do is standing around grinning like uneducated children. Honestly a pity.
Don’t be surprised if you hear about some dead protestors….some demonstrating teachers are being pressured by the gov’t and also the school boards. They are even being threatened in some cases…..threatened by losing their job….or threatened by losing their lives….this could get really, really nasty….

This reminds me. Here’s a message to all those Arubans protesting about how Beth has ‘hurt’ their island (I said this before, but why not say it again, since it’s true):
Think back to the very first days after Natalee went missing. What did your noble law enforcement people do? Something intelligent, like arrest the suspects last seen with Natalee?
Nope. They dragged in two security guards (natives, not Dutch; the difference seems to be significant on Aruba). Jan van der Straaten himself was superintending the arrests.
What was the evidence against these security guards? NOTHING. Except the (later confessed) lies of the three people last seen with Natalee.
So did Aruba erupt in wrath after this? Nope.
Did people speak about the class distinction on Aruba … the privileged Dutch ruling class vs. the locals? Nope.
Was there condemnation of this blatant idiocy?
Nope.
So what DID happen? How DID they get out of jail?
Because of a visiting American, Beth Holloway, who came to Aruba in search of her daughter, did a little investigating, and proved that there was no known association of her daughter with these security guards, and no videotape of Natalee being brought back to her hotel.
In other words … she proved to be more capable than the whole Aruba law enforcement.
(Quite a challenge, right?)
My point? Beth Holloway, who had absolutely NO reason to be well disposed towards Aruba, prevented what would have been a flagrant injustice. You know, I know, we all know that if she hadn’t done this, Aruba would have convicted these two guards, and the case would have been ‘solved.’
Hey, Aruba, you want to complain about Beth? Go ask the security guards. Ask them who deserves to be reviled … Beth, or your own government?

I wonder how the tourists felt after knowing they landed in Aruba with understaffed air controllers. Then to find out their is no police protection or firefighters. Can you imagine trying to shop on the main street in the center of town with 2000 to 3000 protesters. So far it seems like everything is peaceful but steam builds up especially when you are dealing with the gov’t of Aruba.
Millions of dollars lost all because of Joran Van Der Sloot, why not go protest in front of his house…

Aruba arrested two innocent security guards on the word of Joran and the Kalpoes…the police well know who these guys are and what they do….well, thank God for Beth she got that straightened out….I bet those fellows were scared to death. I guess because of better breeding, we have somehow not made mention & repeat reference of the blatent and obvious RACISM in Aruba between the white Dutchies, and the local darker skinned Caribbean born citizens. In this day and age of rights advancement, one has to wonder why the local people stand idly bye and say nothing. That is not to say that all Dutchies are bad, not at all. But clearly, the mal intended whites on that sand bar lord it all over the common good people. The security guard fiasco was a prime example of RACISM and indeed, it took a skinny white Southern woman searching for her daughter to “rescue” those men. Nice thanks Beth got. Well baby, what goes around comes around. Some day the dark skinned Arubans will rise up and take back their country. It happens in every country sooner or later.
I wish Natalee would of had the support of 2000 to 3000 protesters all knocking at the Sloot’s house. 8 and 9: I have to admit that many years ago I arrived in Mexico City in the middle of the night (to change planes headed for the sunny coast) and there were federales lined up as I went through customs, with their rifles slung over their shoulders. It was a little daunting. Needless to say, no one argued with customs officials. But then that’s Mexico City, not a low-to-no crime sunny Happy Island. @@

I’m so angry when I read all these cracy statements. During the strikes there was never any danger to the public or tourist.

Tell us why, when these 3 told cops, that they let Natalee out at the Holiday Inn, Joran showed them one location they let her out, Deepak showed them another location, she fell and hit her head, when they all went to the Holiday Inn first night, neither could point out the guards who got Natalee. They didn’t even wear the same color clothing as they described.. with 48 hours, Beth watched with the police, the Holiday Inn security camera tape and no Natalee brought back to the Holiday Inn, then a few days later, still…the suspects aren’t searched, days have gone by, and yet they go out wake up 2 black security guards at dawn, search them and the house and arrest them on suspicion of kidnapping and murder. Meanwhile the 3 last with Natalee are all meeting with the father included.. still no searches of them or their property. Julia Renfro made the public statement on O’Reilly, cops have good solid evidence against the 2 black men and the other 3 are witnesses. Where did that good solid evidence go of kidnapping and murder? Beth was saying turn them loose, they are innocent.

#74 yoyo ……some good points. you are correct, no one can guarantee 100% someones safety in america or anywhere else. it’s called “a courtesy” or being concerned about sending clients into a quite possibly, dangerous situation in which they have no recourse if they do find themselves with a situation like the natalee holloway case. the whole world already knows about the “armpit of the caribbeans”. as time goes on, as more and more corrupt, vile and evil things are uncovered about aruba, people will not be traveling to aruba. plain and simple. in this case of natalee, give it time, the truth will come out.

Nov. 21: The Kalpoe brothers and Van der Sloot were arrested on suspicion of involvement in voluntary manslaughter and causing serious bodily harm that resulted in the death of Holloway.
Van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers had previously been detained on suspicion of taking part in her death, but they denied involvement and a judge released them for lack of evidence.

The three main suspects in the case were re-arrested last month after prosecutors in Aruba discovered online chat sessions they hoped would break the case open. But none of the men talked in custody, and without the 18-year-old’s body, prosecutors said they had no recourse but to close the most notorious missing persons case in the Caribbean.
If the three suspects were put on trial, the lack of evidence “would lead to an acquittal,” the Public Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.
Moving Holloway into the cold-case files “is a tough burden to bear” for her parents, they acknowledged, but the prosecutors said they had little choice.
“The public prosecutor’s office and the police have gone the extra mile and have exhausted all their powers and techniques in order to solve the mystery of the disappearance of the girl,” the statement read.
Holloway disappeared May 30, 2005, the last night of a trip with members of her Mountain Brook, Ala., high school graduating class. She was last seen leaving a bar with the three suspects: Joran van der Sloot and brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, who all lived on this Dutch island off the coast of Venezuela.
Holloway’s parents, who divorced years before her disappearance, have pushed hard to find what happened to their daughter – and Americans have followed every development.
Police, soldiers and hundreds of volunteers combed hillsides and beaches of this 75-square-mile island. Investigators partially drained a pond. Divers searched the sea bed offshore. Dutch F-16 jets equipped with search equipment conducted overflights. Dogs sniffed for a body.
Investigators interviewed hundreds of potential witnesses and arrested – and re-arrested – several suspects.
At times, it seemed Aruba itself was on trial, as some U.S. politicians and journalists assailed its ability to investigate the case.
Holloway’s mother, Beth Twitty, is “terribly disappointed” with Tuesday’s decision, her spokeswoman said.
“She was very hopeful the last couple weeks and she went down there and met with the prosecutor,” Sunny Tillman said. “He told her face-to-face that he had new and incriminating evidence, and that made her hopeful.”
But the prosecutors’ transcripts of the suspects’ online chats “didn’t have any incriminating points,” according to David Kock, a lawyer for the Kalpoe brothers. The lawyer said it was fanciful to think of the chats as damning.
The prosecutors said they think van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers were involved in Holloway’s disappearance. A lawyer for van der Sloot said it is unfair for them to say so without filing charges.
“Give this kid his due,” lawyer Joseph Tacopina said. “He’s been incarcerated twice falsely. They’ve investigated up and down everything in his life.”
Van der Sloot, who was re-arrested last month in the Netherlands where he attends college and held for several days, was in Aruba on Tuesday enjoying “a celebratory family event,” Tacopina said.

Actually, Kaye (#86), either Dave or (I think) Jug once said that all they wanted, really, was to get Natalee’s body back. Once that was done, they would leave Aruba forever and let it handle the aftermath however it wanted to.

I believe Beth says in her book that the police never bothered to check the videotapes of any of the McDonald’s. We remember that Paulus of the ditch initially said that he picked Joran up at the McDonald’s at 4 a.m.
Later, finding this inconvenient, he changed the time to 11 p.m.
Joran, of course, has given more stories of his getting home that night than anyone can remember.
But the point is … I believe that Beth said the police never even bothered to look at these surveillance tapes to confirm or deny it.
