Flying the Safe Friendly Skies of Aruba? Aruban Unions no longer going to guarantee the minimum staffing like Police & Air Traffic Control

As Spring Break and Easter weekend is upon us Aruban public employee unions are on strike and have gone against a recent judges ruling that they will no longer provide minimum staffing. What does that affect? Just minor and unimportant services like police, fire brigade, immigration, and air traffic control. Doesn’t that instill a warm safe feeling to those about to fly to Aruba.

ORANJESTAD – The public employees’ unions are no longer going to stick to their word before the judge last Friday.  They are no longer going to guarantee the minimum staffing of vital government services like police, fire brigade, immigration, and air traffic control.

According to spokesperson Hendrik Croes of Aruba Airport Authority (AAA), management has decided that in case the air traffic controllers walk out, they will redirect aircrafts with destination Aruba to the airports of Curacao and Bonaire.  “Despite the minimum staffing, the airport is at this moment not troubled by the strikes.  Only problem is that everybody that is present, must work extra hard.”

Other media reported yesterday that the minimum staffing does lead to obvious problems.  Because of that, two aircrafts arrived later than was scheduled.  Croes contradicts that:  “The reason was that yesterday, the airport of Curacao didn’t give clearance for departure when the aircrafts wanted to go.”

Nobody of the government was available this morning for comments on the announcement of the union to no longer guarantee minimum staffing.

Unions: No longer minimum staffing  Amigoe: 3/19/2008

Yesterday, a large group of public employees on strike unexpectedly joined the parade in honour of the Day of the Flag and National Anthem.  The protest march went quietly, but a number of bystanders didn’t appreciate the action.

ORANJESTAD – The public employees’ unions are no longer going to stick to their word before the judge last Friday.  They are no longer going to guarantee the minimum staffing of vital government services like police, fire brigade, immigration, and air traffic control.

The deadline for the government to come with a ‘serious’ proposal was moved from Tuesday evening to 09:00 today.  The civil servants were incited to gather in front of Julianaschool at 10:00.  The union was going to tell them how to intensify the actions.  However, the attendance was low at 10:30; about 60 people.

The government had another proposal on Saturday, in which she indicated for the first time that she wants to talk about indexation.  The proposal included a ministerial disposition of Premier Nelson Oduber, in which a Study Group Legal Position improvement is formally set up.

This study group must no later than April 8, submit a proposal with ‘the issue of indexation or compensation for cost of living within the financial means of the government’.  The premier’s reason for setting up this study group is that the National Ordinance Material Civil Service Right (LMA) requires this.  In conformity with this law, the improvement of the legal position of the civil service must be done in the Central Committee for organized deliberation.

From the disposition it appears that the government acknowledges the right to strike of the public employees.  She also observes that ‘in this deliberation process, the basic assumptions of the unions and the government are flatly opposed’.   The government furthermore wants to know what the unions think of the legal position improvements, before submitting a definite proposal’.

The unions indicated soon after on Saturday that they won’t accept that proposal either.  A huge protest march was organized yesterday during the parade in the honour of the Day of the Flag and National Anthem.  Some bystanders didn’t appreciate this and were very angry.  “This is disrespectful!  This is our day; how dare they”, said an older woman.  Premier Oduber said that now that the strike has indurate, its consequences are for the union.  He called on everybody that suffers damages as a result of the strike, to take this to court.  According to Tourism-minister Edison Briesen, some airline companies have already indicated that they have suffered damage.  But before he goes public with this, he wants to wait for the report of the Aviation Administration.

    12. misskatie on March 21st, 2008 3:09 pm

geez I cant believe this.. there are no friendly or safe skies in aruba.. there is no law and order.. there are no unions working for the workers.. there is no safety for tourists.
now what is there besides criminals like pauulus.. drug lords.. child pornographers and the list goes on and on… they are on a self distruction path.
if americans and other countries .. dont listen up.. they are going to put their selfs at risk when they board a plane to go there.. and than when they get there.. they are on their own..the merchants of aruba are loosing money.. they can only blame pauulus and his judge panel of crooks.aruba doesnt care about americans..THEY JUST WANT YOUR MONEY….

I guess that mean that Ruben Crapenberg will be cleaning the toilets at the airport.

Maybe answer lie in Hol land. Maybe Nazi Queen B needs to be questioned about drug trafficking profits.

Well, this latest turn of events is simply not funny. The very few cruise ships that have not yet (and they soon will) stopped making Aruba a port-o-call don’t have enough staff to blow the bilges after arrival in town. Now we have less than half full air flights who may not be able to land at their destination. If you link them both together, it seems no one gives a flying $hit!

What a revolting development this has turned into!

    15. brie on March 21st, 2008 7:04 pm

At least the people are finally standing for what is right…your gov’t sucks…..!!!!!!!! Now we need to find Natalee!!! And we will!!!

now people that were considering on going to aruba..because of the cheap fares will need to think twice.and pray please…because theres no one responsible . to guide your plane in safely.. and if you take a cruise ship. your still at high risk. you may get robbed on board.. desperate times there call for desperate measures.. the island is out of control…..no amount of money they spend with lowe advertising… is going to help them.. they will not prosper… the word is out.. their reputation is ruined….we all know. they have no dignity.. it sucks to be in aruba more than that it sucks to be amongst those making all the rules and more than anything breaking all the rules.. to fit them.. for this they will pay a dear price.. they brought bad karma on themselves with what was done to natalee and to beth and dave….. JUSTICE FOR NATALEE…

It is highly suspected by his neighbors,

as well. U SUCK, PAULUS!!! Hey, where’s your

      DOH!!!

      They gotcha.

    21. kayjay on March 21st, 2008 10:43 pm

These people are quite unbelievably stupid ….they know that their economy is in jeopardy and they know why, and yet they still will not stand up to the corrupt elite on the island and demand they clean house in the justice department.
I agree that airlines and cruise ships will soon be taking detours…in the meantime all you folks Arubabound on a cruiseship would be better off staying on board rather than going ashore..much wiser and safer. Soon disease and illnesses will be breaking out and there will be no proper medical care abvailable. The snakes and the mosquitoes will multiple and a great plague will take over the island!!!
ARUBA ARREST PAULUS NOW WHILE THERE IS STILL A CHANCE FOR RECOVERY! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

    22. Richard on March 21st, 2008 11:16 pm

Does anyone get the (fleeting) impression that, at times, Aruba seems to be presenting itself as some kind of demented comedy hour?

Just look at the article above, where this:

“Only problem is that everybody that is present, must work extra hard”

is followed, two paragraphs later, by THIS:

“Nobody of the government was available this morning for comments.”

If it weren’t for Natalee, I’d be content to stand on the sidelines and laugh as the island and its denizens sink beneath the waves.

As it is, though … keep sinking. I’d welcome the chance to kick a few of you straight into Hell.

    23. Richard on March 21st, 2008 11:18 pm

Vicki, I hope that you can and will point out this stuff to your State Department contact.

    24. Richard on March 21st, 2008 11:21 pm

Working extra hard on Aruba … my, oh my, wouldn’t that be a vision to behold?

    25. brie on March 22nd, 2008 2:25 am

They’re are silver linings in the gov’t of Aruba, corruption……everywhere…Paulus does the dirty paper work and Posner gives him the funs he needs…..according to Aruban law Posner should not be there and own a business…so why is he??? If Joran had not been given a line of credit he wouldn’t of been in the Holiday Inn and Natalee would still be here….if Anita and Paulus would of been decent parents, Joran would of been home in bed where he belonged, not stalking tourists…….!!!!

    26. brie on March 22nd, 2008 2:44 am

Beth and Dave, Jug too have grounds for a lawsuit and I hope they pursue…Joran and the Kalpoes stand responsible for Natalee’s disappearance….I know they just want Natalee, I would too, but go ahead and sue them, they deserve it!!!!!

    29. brie on March 22nd, 2008 8:55 am

Looks like the unions are no longer guaranteeing minimum staffing…flights are being directed thru Curacao or Bonaire….so I guess from there you have to take a boat to Aruba….!!!

In a previous article it stated the protesters blocked the road to the airport so those tourists wanting to leave had to walk to the airport dragging their luggage. Hilarious!!!!!

    30. Allan on March 22nd, 2008 9:34 am

Who the hell wants to be in Aruba anyway besides organized crime, perverts who take advantage of tourists and Mr. Pink.

    31. kayjay on March 22nd, 2008 10:16 am

Read that quite a lot of people in Europe, other than in the Netherlands, know about JVDS and his evil ways and have no sympathy for him and his parents, who are the first domino in the line, or the last whichever way dominos are stacked, and if tipped the whole DIRTYHANDED lot will topple.
Have always thought this was the case…these sort of islands are havens for a lot of perverts, losers and people who can’t make the cut anywhere else…why the hell else would the Netherlands send that idiot Hans Mos over there, or his predecessor for that matter..I’ll bet she provided a great “service” on the island.

    57. 2amforsure on March 23rd, 2008 5:49 pm

Well, after reading the other board and giving some thought on the comments on how peaceful Beth seems to be about this, plus the fact that the Persistence just up and left, maybe this case IS solved. It does makes sense that the FBI (and the State Dept) would not say anything, just bide their time until they can get the goods on everyone involved. Just a hopeful thought!

    58. misskatie on March 23rd, 2008 7:30 pm

well I doubt the case is solved.
. nothing that comes out of aruba is positive…
      that island is .PURE…EVIL.
      … maybe they practice vodoo
who knows it’s been said that on those islands strange things happen day or night….. . by the news.. we hear the islands upside down no law and order..people dumped at sea .. soon planes falling from the skies..if it wasnt for the sadness of natalies death.. this could almost be hilarious. and in a sense it is.. evil lurks there.. any way .. I doubt the case is solved.. no way…
or they would have arrested pauulus and his evil spawn.. they should arrest Anita.. toooo for being so stupid.. it’s one thing to love your child and want to do right by them.. but I as a mother of two grown sons and two daughters also grown.. I remember a time when one of my sons was getting into alot of serious trouble.. we as parents made him take responsibility for his actions and.. pay for his crime and take it like a man.. he did thanked us later for guilding him in the right path..and I thank god we showed tough love.it was difficult but we came through…
if joran was my child I would have turned him in .. for his own good..told encouraged him to do the right thing…I would beat him like a red headed step child…
they arent doing him any good .. by covering for him and coddling him .. they are in strong denial.. therefore how can the fool learn if he isnt taught..thats still no excuse..
oviously pauulus gave him money and sent him on his way no questions asked. because he didnt want to deal with him… probably because pauulus was away from home alot .. doing his criminal work.. and wasnt there for his son…there is no such thing as a perfect parent.. we all make mistakes.. my son took responsibility we made him do the right thing….we used tough love.. it didnt happen with joran..and for that a young girl went missing.and killed…. a pattern we know for sure.. these guys stalked girls.. whether they are serial killers .. we dont know.. I dont think this is an isolated case…
but they destroyed alot of lives… PAUULUS IS EVIL EVIL…. THERES SOMETHING STRANGE ABOUT THIS MAN….

    64. Richard on March 24th, 2008 10:53 am

Who has any confidence in the bureaucracy of “our” government anyway, these days?

There was a reference above to how “peaceful” Beth is now, or is said to be. I’m speaking purely off the top of my head, as it were, but I don’t think that she has any doubt any more about Natalee’s fate. I also don’t think she expects that answers will ever be forthcoming from Aruba.

I don’t know quite how to phrase this, but I suspect that she has, in a way, come to terms with the past and is trying to “move on.” That sounds stupid, and doesn’t really express what I want to say, but I don’t know what words could.

I guess what I mean is that, especially with her strong religious faith, she has decided to focus on what she can DO at this point, and to leave the rest to the wisdom of God.

Obviously it’s not as simple as that, but that’s how I read the situation.

My own view is … the best that we the people can do for her is to support the boycott of Aruba. It’s the one tool that we have to wield; let’s make the most of it.

And please remember … today, March 24, is the tenth anniversary of the disappearance of Amy Bradley.

    65. brie on March 24th, 2008 11:53 am

I think Beth has found a great deal of strength in helping other people and will continue on that road. But gosh, what a struggle for her to get there.

When your heart has been broken it never really heals, you just learn to cope.

As for Joran he will be hated and haunted for the rest of his life. Who is going to go on supporting his butt?

Haven’t heard anymore about the civil lawsuit, wonder if Beth is still going to pursue that path against Joran, I hope she does. Maybe it would help bring on a trial.

Just looked at webcam….maybe one or two people on the beach, practically deserted.

Curacao is located 50 miles east of Aruba so taking the detour by boat it will take the tourists another hour to get there. Now when you get there, assuming you made it, if your hotel catches on fire, no one is coming, if your in a traffic accident, no one is coming, no one checking immigration you could very well be in bad commpany.

The article in Amigoe stated there were 2000 to 3000 people protesting and that probably was not all of them. Yep, just one happy, safe island.

how is it that you were able to hook up with beth per phone conversation?

    74. Richard on March 24th, 2008 4:14 pm

      Apparently Beth called Vicki.

This statement in Aruba’s tourist brochure reminds me of something. Last year (it’s impossible to believe that our first anti-Aruba protest, in Boston, was just about one year ago) we met someone (an American) who owned a hotel in Aruba. Or managed it, at least, but I think she owned it.

(For the record, she told us then that the van der Sloots were practically ostracized on Aruba.
      Nice, if it were true….)

Anyway, I think that Observer has kept up with her. If so, maybe he could try to find out how things are going now. I’ll suggest it.

    75. brie on March 24th, 2008 4:52 pm

      misskatie….somebody better burn those brochures….pronto!!!

Maybe Carpe could do a video for us….tourists on a raft paddling their way to Aruba with their luggage for 50 miles and when they get there, Aruba caused them 3rd degree burns, so now for the remainder of your vacation you have to stay out of sun or take monumental baths of Aloe….the fire department…sign says….get your own hose…we are not a functioning department….the police, don’t call here….we are C&S’s drunk and drugged..

Where is this pendulum swingin’ in Natalee’s

direction, that Jossy keeps talking about? Is the

      pendulum on strike too?

Jossy said after the De Vries interview that

the pendulum swung the other way, and most people

now believe Joran Vandersloot did it.

      What is this?

      SHORT ATTENTION SPAN THEATER???

      Where they ‘SWANG’ it?

Get up and do something about it, damn it!

How any HUMAN BEING could watch the De Vries

Joran Confession Recording and not want to skewer

him right in the nuts, and then wretch all over

      tacky blouses,

Some time ago (I posted it on a thread that’s way back here, somewhere or other) I wrote to Jossy Mansur suggesting that he would be the logical one to take the lead in raising funds on Aruba to help the Persistence complete his mission.

He’s spoken out against the government there often enough … but he had a feud with them anyway.

Is Mansur really “committed” to justice, and getting answers in Natalee’s case? Or was it a convenient way for him to continue the feud that he already had with the Aruban government?

I don’t know … but if any money has been raised on Aruba, I haven’t heard about it. Nor have I heard back from Jossy Mansur.

Part of the tragedy is that so many organizations with vested interests are jumping in and using Natalee’s disappearance as a kind of stalking horse for their own interests.

We the monkeys have, I think, done far more to promote justice than the organizations that cash in on their huffing and puffing.

Let’s continue to do what we can. Remember, this coming weekend there is a rally in Houston. (Aruba Tourism Authority is also going to be in the nation’s capital, Washington DC, but I don’t think we’ve gotten substantial commitments from people there. If you’re interested, please contact JusticeforNatalee@gmail.com pronto!)

No justice for Natalee … no tourists for Aruba.

They are THREATENING to sue, Greta. They haven’t

      actually done it yet.

      …AND WILL NOT. IMO

      1. Because Aruba is an international laughing stock.

      2. They will get their copious a$$e$ handed to them.

      3. Suing Greta will open up more relentless waves
of anti-Aruba media stories. These stories will
be endlessly YOU TUBED and make there way around
the world in about 15 – 30 minutes to be played
      over and over again.

      4. Refer back to #2 again.

      5. They don’t have the resources for such a new
battle in the War de Natalee.

    94. misskatie on March 25th, 2008 6:42 pm

geez everything they do back fires on them.. due to their ineptness.. stupidity.. I think pauulus is head of.. some kind of crime family… why elsewould he be so influential…

    95. brie on March 25th, 2008 8:25 pm

Paulus knows what goes on in Aruba and exactly who does what, that’s why all the protection for Joran….plus the fact that Paulus dumped Natalee in the sea….he was part of the scheme and knows how he can illegally get around things. I can only imagine what he has done in the past, as well as Joran.

NO DOUBT THAT THEY HAVE DONE THIS BEFORE.. THERES SOMETHING VERY DARK DARK ABOUT PAUULUS…MAKES ME WONDER IF HES EVER BEEN ARRESTED OR IN ANY OTHER LEGAL PROBLEMS… OR HAS HE BEEN ABLE TO MANEUVER THROUGH WITHOUT BEING NOTICED… PERHAPS THE FBI MAY KNOW WHAT KIND OF DEALS HE IS INVOLVED IN… BUT HE IS INTO SOMETHING..
