More Obama Art … Art Imitating, Um, Art … Or is it Plagiarizing Art? (Watusi – L’Escargot)

Obama’s choice in art seems to snail, sorry pale in comparison to the real deal.

Who knew that “Watusi” actually translated to “L’Escargot?”  This White House certainly has an eye for detail. Oops, Mr. President … that looks an awful lot like a snail.

Art? Looks like the collage I made in the 3rd grade.

What’s up with the Obama art collection in the White House? First we have the “art of Maybe,” now we have the art of plagiarism.

From Michelle Malkin via the Free Republic comes this little artistic remake gem.

Today, a Free Republic poster notices another of the Obamas’ curious art choices: “Watusi (Hard Edge),” by Alma Thomas, who is described by the NYTimes as “a longtime Washington resident who is an African-American painter.”

The Gateway Pundit confirms that there is a fraud in The White House. But we already knew that didn’t we? What a metaphor.

This is cool, Brian Ledbetter at Snapped Shots has an animation overlay of the two pieces of art. Glad to see someone has an eye for detail.

I swear they may have both plagiarized my 3rd grade art project.

Now I am going to have to dig in the attic for pics ;)

Too bad nobody has an eye for art history – or even art, for that matter (you have the Thomas piece rotated onto its edge). The same page that contains Brian Ledbetter’s overlay animation also contains his link to an art criticism text that devotes most of two pages to a detailed analysis of the explicit relationship – stated to be such by Thomas herself – between Thomas’s work and Matisse’s, the ways in which the two pieces differ slightly and why, her systematic program of engaging the works of other modern artists, and her habit of using elements of other artists’ work in her own pieces. All of this is well-documented, and part of a conscious program Thomas pursued and was known for. Calling it “plagiarism” is no more than declaring yourself to be ignorant and unwilling to bother looking for a truth that can be found in minutes through Google.

It kinda reminds me of the Vanilla Ice
“Ice Ice Baby” scandal. When V.I. aka
Robert Van Winkle who I will hereinafter
simply refer to as dooch bag… re-sampled
Queen & David Bowie’s “Under Pressure” song.

It was completely the same but he added just
one note to it… to set it apart from the original. Ya know, it’s been about 18 years
and I still think he sucks big ones.

wasn’t he that guy that also made that Informer song?

This ‘Knock-Off’ should not ever be referred to
as ‘Plagiarism’……’Knock-Off’ has a rather elite
sound to it. Hey, the colors were altered and
the copy was rotated a bit, right? This is real
      deep stuff!

#2 Too bad you don’t know that the real reason and purpose for modern “art” is to debase and degrade the masses. Another example of this are the extremely ugly sculptures that one often sees in front of office buildings. Beautiful art isn’t allowed. Even all the extremely beautiful music from the 1800′s has been bought up and tucked away in favor of the degrading and debasing R&R.
Picasso, Monet, Manet, Matisse, Warhol et al.–all garbage meant for the consumption of the masses and the pseudo-intellectuals.
