Aruban Public Workers Protetsts Destroying their Own Economy Affecting Cruise Ship Passengers

Aruba, you do not get a second chance to make a first impression. Imagine what the lasting impression was on the cruise  passengers this weekend when you blocked the entrance to the cruise terminal and caused utter chaos. The cruise ship passengers and tourists not only did not get off the boat, do you think they ever will return? If tours are being canceled, roads blocked and tourists are being affected in such an adverse manner, what would be the reason to even book a vacation to Aruba? A vacation is supposed to be just that, a vacation …. not a chore.

Aruba_protests_04-19_Blockade

Due to the actions that extended to the cruise terminal, some cruise passengers decided to spend the day on their ship, instead of going shopping or taking a tour of the island.  A number of island tours were even cancelled.  Cab drivers on the the cruise terminal were angry, because they have missed income.

The actions of the public employee strikes are very similar in nature to the actions of law enforcement, the justice department and the Aruban government in the aftermath of the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. Making decisions in matters without the slightest idea of the consequences that would occur and  affect tourism and the economy. Not just for the present, but for years to come.

Entrance harbour blocked (Amigoe: 4/19/2008)

A truck was parked right across the entrance of the container harbour, causing a complete traffic jam.

ORANJESTAD – Harbour workers conducted solidarity actions on Friday, by blocking the entrance of the container harbour with a big container.

Due to the actions that extended to the cruise terminal, some cruise passengers decided to spend the day on their ship, instead of going shopping or taking a tour of the island.  A number of island tours were even cancelled.  Cab drivers on the the cruise terminal were angry, because they have missed income.

The blockade was removed around noon, but the tension increased in the course of the afternoon, when the harbour workers decided to walk out.  They were concerned about rumours that harbour master Alfonso Boekhoudt was going to be dismissed and replaced by someone that enjoys the government’s confidence more.  Those rumours are so far not confirmed.  The workers, led by union leader Anselmo Pontilius, walked to the office of Transport-minister Briesen, but there was no encounter with him.

      Dear Aruba Protesters:
Thanks for your help in supporting the voluntary American boycott of your One Crappy Little Island. We appreciate your efforts in allowing Americans to know just how unsafe and unhappy your piece of sand is. Thanks for saving American lives!

      Bizarro world.

    4. katablog on April 21st, 2008 7:41 am

Hmmm, a little math question for Aruba here:

Which is worse: Hotels with 70% occupancy rates or hotels with 95% occupancy rates but 50% of those people paying 25% of the normal rate?

      Next question:
Which is worse: Americans never coming to Aruba or a cruise ship full of people who’ve never been to Aruba before arriving to find that the whole place is in chaos and one day of their vacation has been wasted?

    5. Bearlyhere on April 21st, 2008 7:48 am

      Aruba boycotts Aruba!!!

    6. brie. on April 21st, 2008 8:00 am

Next the cruise lines will be canceling their stop to Aruba….also many probably bought their tour tickets in advance which they sell on the ship only to find out no tour today….but why take it out on your tourists….I guess the unions figure if they put a big hurt on tourism it will get the attention of the gov’t….but in turn hurting themselves

Think about it….if you were a passenger on the ship and saw all that chaos going on, it was probably frightening and certainly looked unsafe.
If you have got the harbor entrance blocked it would tell me you are saying stay on the ship…and don’t come on the island

    7. Richard on April 21st, 2008 8:03 am

One has to sympathize with those unfortunate Aruban drug pushers and chollers.

I think that both Beth and Dave, in their books, tell us that the pushers are easily seen within blocks of the cruise ship terminal. We are told that the rule is that they are not allowed to commit harm against American tourists … and, of course, what we hear from Aruba must be true.

But now these people are deprived of their main customer base (and, I suspect, many people are drawn to Aruba precisely because of this market).

Who will the druggies sell their wares to, if there are no more tourists?

And who will be able to pay off the police to look the other way?

Next thing: someone in the crowd will assault some tourist. Look for that news to spread.

Anyway … keep it up, Arubans. We on this blog will do our part to spread the message. Or maybe the strikes can be blamed on Beth and Natalee?

    8. Richard on April 21st, 2008 8:05 am

I wonder if this action is affecting Valero’s refinery, the one that it is selling.

Maybe that will be the next target, and Aruba can lose the revenue from oil exports as well.

    9. brie. on April 21st, 2008 8:13 am

Sounds like they are blocking everyplace where civil servants work and walking off the job….you know they did a lot of complaining that Natalee’s case was hurting tourism…well what do they think this is doing….

    10. Richard on April 21st, 2008 8:21 am

One more thing to keep in mind …

A while back, I think it was in 2006, one of the cruise lines stopped going to Aruba.

That article was on this blog, and perhaps Red or moderator Klaasen could post the link to it here.
I think it was Carnival Cruise Line, but I’m not certain.

Anyway, the cruise line said that owing to the high price of fuel, it would no longer visit Aruba. Nobody believed for a second that that explanation gave the real reason.

So what are we seeing now? Fuel prices are much higher; Caribbean cruises are seen as something like bottom fishing in the industry (the cruise lines apparently see Asia as their focus for future growth); and now Arubans are ruining their appeal to the cruise lines.

Maybe we can expect that more cruise lines will decide to drop Aruba as a destination. After all, remember that National Geographic said that the island lags in attractions relative to its Caribbean neighbors.

We’ll be applauding when and if this happens.

The word must be out… Aruba is not a safe for tourists. Can you imagine spending your hard earned money to travel and not feeling safe enough at a destination to leave the cruise line?

    13. dotratc on April 21st, 2008 8:43 am

Actually, Carnival dropped Aruba from its Caribbean itinerary after the Aruban government refused to cave in to Carnival’s demands. Carnival wanted some ridiculous concessions and, for once, the Aruban government told them, “no.” The decision probably hurts Carnival more than it hurts Aruba.

i would like to personally thank the moronic citizens of aruba in helping the BOYCOTT.

thank you, please dont stop, please keep protesting- keep making the tourists NEVER want to return to your EVIL WICKED PIECE OF CRAP ISLAND. i hate all of you.

    17. brie. on April 21st, 2008 9:45 am

I wouldn’t want to go to an island where I saw hundreds of angry people on strike….

It takes a great deal of fuel to go to Aruba and it was a wasted trip…I’m sure the cruise line wasn’t too pleased either…I wonder if they had to refund everyone’s tour money. They were all probably very disappointed if they were really looking forward to seeing Aruba….not everyone knows about Natalee and the boycott…but this certainly gives them a reason not to come back.

    18. brie. on April 21st, 2008 9:57 am

Well the passengers had plenty to say when they got back and you know how word travels…they came there to spend money on the island and the strikers blocked the harbor entrance, that would make it hard for a tourist to understand….

    19. brie. on April 21st, 2008 10:42 am

Looked at Butuchi and Tara beaches, looks deserted, now and then you see a few stragglers, guess their islanders on strike… they must of at one time had a fairly crowded beach to have put up all of those umbrellas.

    20. kaye on April 21st, 2008 10:46 am

The damage has been done by aruba’s own corrupt and incompetent government. they can keep blaming the media and the economy.they keep digging their own grave deeper. if just one group of arubans had stepped forward and protested their incapable, corrupt government officials when this crime first happened, then maybe they would not be in the economic shape they are in today. aruba, You are not the victim here- Natalee and her family.
“You chose to sleep with the Devil- now live with it. And pray that someone does the right thing and brings closure.” that’s all you had to do from the beginning and we would not be here today, almost 3 years later, still seeking justice for natalee. but you chose to take the lies and the cover-up. so suck it up cupcake, deal with it and stop your damn whining!

FYI…..wore my “Boycott Aruba till they do something about Natalee” t-shirt during my recent four day mini vacation. small island off NC coast, Topsail.beautiful and Safe!! people stopped me and asked about the case. I’m more than happy to oblige them. i keep flyers, that i created and printed up myself, in my tote and i always hand them out and leave them in the coffee shop, book store, etc. they also wanted to know where i got my t-shirt. small ways to keep getting the word out. if every poster would follow suit and keep it going. believe it or not there are still folks out there who don’t know the story. i am happy to enlighten them.

      Ester:

      Where’d you go?

      .

I, too, am grateful to the protestors. It takes alot of courage to stand up to Oduber. Beth did it; and, in return, she was told that the Prime Minister of Aruba was tired of hearing Natalee’s name… sick of the case and was going to send her walking, on down the road in search of her daughter, alone.

      In the end,

it all comes right back to you…

      the ‘Lion’ King of Aruba!

      The one that is, truly,

      inept to run an island,

      inept to rule a country…

and incapable of making ANYONE happy.

      .

      Hey, Oduber!

Is it true what they say?

      You have no Budget?

      No Records?

      No Books?

      What?

Was ruling this island some kind of “personal” quest that you ventured to try, without a clue about the economic consequences? You’re people want only what is fair, just and true and all you can do is kick them to the curb with your crooked dealings….

      Block the Shipping Docks!

      Shut down the Terminal!

      and

      Lock the Doors!

      YOU!

    29. brie. on April 21st, 2008 2:47 pm

Think there is also going to be a rivalry between the privately owned businesses, taxi drivers, etc and the civil servants….Aruba declared war zone…..the privately owned shops are not part of the strike and they see their income dwindling…losing all their tourists…

    30. brie. on April 21st, 2008 3:19 pm

Rudy Croes some Minister of Justice, all he could say about Natalee’s case, referring to Beth is somebody needs to shut that woman up and then there’s Obuber, I am sick and tired of this case, and Jacobs asking the same question over and over again if Natalee had seizures and mumbling under his breath in their native language things about Natalee and then Dompig, Beth came to crush us….the locals need to throw their gov’t out and start over again

So now there is a lawsuit against the gov’t wonder how far the strikers will get with that…will it’s time they stood up to them…

    31. Patti on April 21st, 2008 3:24 pm

I guess that’s what they get

      for selecting an Arawak

      to lead them…

      a war zone.

      It’s over for Oduber;

but, it may take some time for

Aruba to wash their hands of him.

      .

But, some of us will NEVER forget, EVER!

      .

    32. LilPuma on April 21st, 2008 3:43 pm

Is Dennis Jacobs losing money because of the loss of tourists? How about Rick Smid, Bob Witt, Karen Janssen, Jan van der Straaten or Anita and Paulus van der Sloot?

They don’t care if the cab drivers and wait staff and shop owners are losing money. Yet those same people criticize Beth instead of those who gave Joran his Get Out of Jail Free card as well as his VIP pass to Carlos and Charlies at the age of 17. We don’t have political power in Aruba. The people of Aruba need to speak out. Further jeopardizing tourism with this strike is just as dumb as telling us again that they flew jets over the island to find Natalee, but she “just sort of vanished” (as Arlene said on U.S. national television).

Mr. Prime Minister, Joran van der Sloot said on tape that “higher powers” helped him out on this. Do you really believe he was lying about that? You know better; so do we. Ask the wizard for some courage and DO SOMETHING.

    33. brie. on April 21st, 2008 3:46 pm

Of course the Aruban authorities will probably pull off their usual stunt and go on vacation…

Dear tourists things are a little out of wack, so there maybe are no hotels functioning, for a while we were asking you to bring your sheets, towels, a sweeper etc but things have taken a turn for the worst, please bring your tent and cots and you can take a bath in the ocean….

    34. brie. on April 21st, 2008 4:38 pm

Maybe the gov’t needs to tap the drug lords that they allow to exist on the island or tap the casinos…they allow them near the terminals but they are not allowed to harm the tourist….well isn’t selling drugs to tourists harmful

    35. misskatie on April 21st, 2008 4:47 pm

the people of aruba might just get desperate enough to start driving cabs themselves or selling food on the corners next to the choller houses…how bout that..

god only knows all the horrible things they put natalee through.. for their own pleasures… their motives were evil and pure selfish….no one with any kind of heart or right mind would have contributed to her death… but than we know that they arent of a sane mind .. all involved have .. evil in their hearts… deep dark evil… than we have to deal with all those negative bloggers that either live in aruba or are supportive of the cruelty that those evil doer’s did to natalee..

I can’t help but wonder how it must be to live in Aruba, knowing that you are being dictated by a man that is not only proud of his Arawak heritage, but is a leader of a secret society that makes up its’ own rules as it goes along. It was shortly after the ‘white bread’ incident that Minister of Justice, Rudy Croes went public with the statement, “Anyone talking with the Aliens via the internet will be considered a traitor!”

Within a week, two employees of the local television station were found hung in very unusual places… one, a woman, was found on her front porch; while the other, a man, was found hung from a high beam that ran between two buildings with his hand in his pocket.

No doubt, anyone with half a brain could figure out that the Arawak Nation was worried that its’ secrets were being told either through the freedom of the press, or through internet blogging. It’s no secret that Scared Monkeys is the most popular and most informative blogging forum when it comes to the Natalee Holloway case. Most likely, they didn’t like the things that were being said here and they sent a very strong message to the islanders to keep their mouths shut. It is rumored that the woman was Dutch and the Aruban man was a good friend of hers. They worked together, as a team, on many projects. Both were young people with promicing careers and a lot to live for.

If you research the information, you will find that suicide is one of the leading causes of death on the island of Aruba. However, we know that many of those deaths, including that of Pit Bull, the bouncer at the club that Deepak stopped at on his way to the beach, are suspicious.

I don’t know the penalty for treason, but in many countries, it is to be hung. Treason is the act of turning against your government, either in a time of war, or in such a way as to bring danger upon, either, your government or its’ troups. Clearly, none of this can be proven; but, it’s worth noting that the pictures of the hanging bodies were published on the front page of the local newspapers. Obviously, the threat, followed by the hanging of two, young, aggressive news reporters was a shocking site… one that sent a strong message to the people of Aruba and the world, as well.

Just recently, we also heard of a young man a boy, really; that was a witness to the activities at the Lighthouse on the night Natalee disappeared. His obituary has been posted and it said that the young man died on June 6, two days before the festival, of seizures. The Holloways have not been specific about when the questioning was made of them whether Natalee had ever suffered from seizures, but June 6 would have been early in the investigation… and it was, perhaps, at that time that Joran came up with his story regarding Natalee being a victim of some sort of seizure. Perhaps, taking information from one murder and transferring to the other.

There was also a young lady, about the same age of Natalee that died on that same day, June 6. Her cause of death is not mentioned. But, I am beginning to wonder if she may have been a witness of some sort, as well.

I don’t mean to rant on and on, but I’m trying to make a point. That being, early after the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, nearly every poster from Aruba would come here to warn us of dirty police. The corruption of the Police Department on Aruba is no secret to the common people. They live in a state of fear, both of the drug dealers, the chollars and the police, as well. Obviously, in such a condition, the possibility of a crime being reported to the police by anyone that is familiar with these problems would be less. In fact, as we find in many areas where corruption is suspected, people are less apt to report ANYTHING to them… while people that are there, from other countries, who either have never experienced the corruption in Aruba, first hand or have been led to believe that Aruba is a safe place; may have tried to help in providing the Holloways with pertinent information that could have led to the arrest of the person, or people involved. But that didn’t happen. Instead, it appears that anyone who came forward, either died under unusual circumstances; were deported; or, simply, disappeared.

There is no question, if the obits are legitimate a total of four young people died during the time period between May 31 and June 6 of 2005. Two men, who were innocent of any crime, were arrested due to false leads and perhaps manufactured evidence (the bloody mattress found within blocks of their homes that was, later, confirmed to be blood from a dog, rather than a human being). It is only through the Chicago videos, that we are able to see with our own eyes the extent of the cover-up, with the police blocking the area, as the victims were removed from the rocks. One of those victims is believed to be Natalee. Although we can’t make a possitive identification of the body in the bush; it was not until the release of this video, that the two security guards were freed.

It is telling to note that there is also a disclaimer that is stamped on each of the videos that refers to the unfair treatment given to the people of color, on the island, in being charged and many times convicted of crimes that they did not commit. Scape goats, for a Nation that is only interested in protecting their own.

I have often wrote that I was leary of the guilt of the Kalpoe Brothers. But, there is no doubt in my mind, whether through coercion or through the use of threats, like those made against them during their trip in the ‘bugged’ transport vehicle; that they, willingly, participated in the cover-up, as well. It was through making false statements, specifically, that pointed guilt in the direction of the two guards.

There is no justice in Aruba only corruption, coersion and total incompetance. To be framed through the use of private meetings around a pool owned by the prominent father of one of the accused; is a miscarriage of justice… one that I suspect happens in Aruba all the time. It is because of this, that the people of Aruba do not trust their police, their government or their court system…

That is why the boycott has taken root and grown into an international event. One that speaks loudly for those that are afraid of a mere whisper, when it comes to their authorities. Aruba is at a cross-road, one that could divert them on to a path of independence from their current leaders and the promice of a brighter future. But, it is, truly, up to them to take the first step.

Arubans are unique, in that they have looked the other way for nearly three years, afraid of the powers that be in Aruba. But the actions taken against their government during the past few days have shown that it is not too late to save their island from the dirty hands, the disappearing acts and the corrupt justice system that has kept them silent for so long.

As outsiders, we supported the bakery strikers that were denied making a profit in an attempt to hold an independently owned business responsible for feeding a Nation white bread… and we support the strikers, today, as they put themselves in harms way to win their independence from a government that has kept them scared, tattered and torn for far too long.

Where there is no independence, there is no justice. For it is only through impartial judgement that justice is served.

      Boycott, Aruba!

Maybe the Alpo Bros lied for Joran simply because they were intimidated by the big bad Judge who had obvious connections. If he gave the order on what to say, they certainly weren’t going to dispute it when the entire police force was in cahootz with Papa Sloot. As far as Patrick persuing the Alpo lies, I think he probably felt he already had the goods on joran, with his admission, and why press further. Patrick couldn’t foresee Joran once again being exonerated.

    58. Richard on April 21st, 2008 10:54 pm

Very interesting points that you raise, Patti.

And, of course, we know that early on the keeper of the crematorium was found headless in a park.

Doubtless he cut off his own head. People tend to do that, don’t they?

And we know that in the ten days after Natalee vanished, while the security guards languished in prison, the Kalpoes were at the van der Scum residence every day. And that PvdScum paid for their defense … no doubt, out of the kindness of his heart.

Quite interesting for two people who just happened to drive away with Natalee … in Deepak’s car … but who were not involved.

      As they say.

    59. Patti on April 21st, 2008 11:26 pm

Personally, I think that Patrick had only ONE purpose in mind… ending the boycott. He thought, for sure, Beth Holloway would be satisfied with a confession from Joran and a subsequent visit to the assylum. Patrick is Aruban. He knows, full well, that the current justice system, in Aruba, would never convict Joran of anything.

What is most telling is that this was presented to the Holloways and the American people as a sting operation that was initiated in The Netherlands by a successful crime reporter that was always on the side of The Holloways. But, when you consider the statements that he made after a television interview, while the cameras were still rolling, unbeknownst to him; there is no doubt that it was, in fact, the other way around.

This was an attempt made by man that had known Joran prior to his participation in this ‘sting’ operation. He was the one that approached Peter to participate in this operation, not the other way around. If you read his e-mail that was posted a few threads back, it is apparant that he did everything in his power to appease the family of Natalee Holloway by providing false information with only one thing in mind… put an end to the boycott and free Joran and the Kalpoes of any responsibility.

The statements made by Joran, led the police to arrest an innocent party; another scape goat, in an attempt to quench our thirst for justice. Luckily, Patrick took it upon himself to strike a blow against his REAL enemies, members of this forum who are considered leaders in the support of the boycott… and his distortion of the facts, in reference to this boycott; as well as his attempt to blow the boycott out of proportion, describing it as a ‘witch hunt’, is a clear reflection of the REAL purpose for his becoming involved in the first place.

The members of this forum need to pat themselves on the back for keeping the pressure on Aruba. Without that pressure, his fall from grace would not have been possible. The desperate act of a gun for hire is not only a reminder of the past deeds of the Van der Sloots, but is an indication of the type of people that Joran and his family associate with… people driven by greed with no integrity or conscience.

      .

      Justice for Natalee!

      Justice!

      Richard:

Are you sure the Kalpoes were at the Van der
Scums, everyday during that 10-day period?
      I’ve never read that before.

    62. Patti on April 22nd, 2008 12:21 am

One more thing, before I go to bed:

I believe the death of the caretaker was ruled as a murder. His wife, of very small stature, emphatically denied the charges stating that it was physically impossible for her to be able to inflict such an injury on her husband who was, from my understanding, a very large, strong man. However, the court ruled against her and, as far as I know, she is still in prison serving her sentence.

Does anyone remember the exact date of the murder?

      .

      Nite…

    63. brie. on April 22nd, 2008 12:36 am

Well Patrick the boycott is still on because we are still seeking justice for Natalee. The video didn’t quite do it but stick around maybe the civil suit will give us the whole truth with Peter, Bram and you….and then the boycott will end…but we have to have the full truth…

patti #59….very good points. i don’t mean to bring Peter de Vries into the picture in a bad light but being the apparently intelligent person he is, professional in every manner, how do you suppose he could NOT have known that Patrick may have had something up his sleeve, something other than good intentions?

i also believe that all of us agree that whether or not he “was up to something” the exposure that it brought around the world was priceless. even if people were not aware of natalee and the tragedy, and the coverup, before the video tapes of joran, they certainly are now. and maybe the tapes made people WANT to now more about the case and they have been educating themselves. which to me is the key, read, research, educate yourself. and support the boycott in any way, shape or form that you can.

    67. Richard on April 22nd, 2008 7:58 am

Patti (#61) … Yes, that has been widely reported. The Kalpoe brothers spent mornings at the van der Sloot residence in the days after Natalee vanished. I believe that one of them (Deepak, probably), when imprisoned, looked up one of the two security guards in the same jail and apologized.

He also said, if I recall, that PvdScum, who initially paid for the Kalpoes’ defense attorney (the one who pays for the lawyer controls the lawyer, and has access to the information), was coaching all three of them in their alibis.

Perhaps, if they have a chance, Red or moderator Klaasen could post the url to this info. Thanks!

(#64) … So the Aruban unions are turning to their legal system. On the basis of what we’ve seen of that, I wouldn’t advise them to hope for too much.

    68. brie. on April 22nd, 2008 8:41 am

Several destructions were noticed at the gov’t building this week-end. The entrance to the council minister hall was damaged by fireworks; the building was bombarded with bottles and rotten fruit and the transformer kiosk behind the building was damaged. Tromp said the destruction was done by union members. because they are angry and disappointed. But it can also be week-end vandalism done by rioters who also support their viewpoint.

Sounds like more are joining and supporting the strikers… the longer this goes on the angrier they will all become…sounds like a big uprising against their gov’t….it’s about time!!!!

    71. brie. on April 22nd, 2008 9:03 am

There are still too many unanswered questions, maybe Peter is still doing some investigating….I hope so…Patrick stated his intentions and it was to help the people of Aruba and expose Joran for what he did to Aruba….and also probably saw some dollars signs in his pocket. But regardless he did help, the video is out there and people were outraged…the things Joran said certainly exposed him for what he is….Peter and Patrick are going to help Beth with her civil suit and that is important.

like everything else about this case, it looks planned. as small as aruba is, i would think that at least half of the population knows the truth. even after boasting about the crime, the criminals are allowed to walk free, possibly to do the same thing again.

      Well, I said it before…

I think Paulus is an Arawak.

      He heard of the virgin

      staying at the Holiday Inn.

      Took a look for himself…

      and she vanished.

I, honestly, believe they kept her in that cage

until the night of the sacrifices.

Paulus earned money by providing the Nation

with their sacrifice and Joran went off to school.

      .

      Remember?

      Your OWN FATHER?!?!?!!!

      .

      Paulus had EVERYTHING

      to do with her disappearance.

      Him and his Lions.

      .

But, I don’t think she was raped.

I don’t think the crime against Natalee

had ANYTHING to do with sex,

rather, more to do with a spiritual rape.

      Charles Croes knew Natalee’s father

      was a minister, a Christian,

      and they targetted her.

      .

      Simple.

      Just my, honest, opinion.

    80. Patti on April 23rd, 2008 8:49 pm

I think the body in the bush

      says it all.

      Not to say she wasn’t raped;

but, if she had of been,

that’s no reason to kill her.

      .

      Or the OTHERS!!!

      .

I think the High Priest did it…

      What do you think?
