Marriott Sues Aruban Government for Exclusive Beach Rights … Remove those peon Watersport businesses off Our Beach, Privatization?

All is not well on “One Happy Island”. The Aruba Marriott is suing the Aruban government to remove the businesses in front of the Marriott on the beach. Who runs Aruba these days, the government or the foreign tourism businesses?

Water sport businesses are upset with the Marriott Hotel, because it wants to have the businesses removed from the beach via the court.

ORANJESTAD – A great number of water sport businesses are very upset with the Marriott hotel, because they say that the hotel wants to have them removed from the beach in front of the hotel.  The Marriott has recently instituted a lawsuit against the National Government, demanding the government to meet her commitments and remove the buildings on the beach in front of the hotel.

So what does this mean for Aruba? Are the beaches becoming privatized? Are all-inclusive, private and secluded properties not far down the line? Next thing you know back room deals will be made by the Aruban government will mega-hotel conglomerates like the Marriott to restrict traffic and accessibility by Arubans on the beaches in front of the hotel.

… the Marriott committed to invest almost 4 million dollars in a new fishing center and pier; part of the commitments with the government was also that no other buildings will be permitted on the beach.  When the center was complete, the hotel thought that everybody was pleased and that the government would then relocate the other 10 water sport businesses on that particular beach.

The hotel’s lawyer Johan Sjiem Fat confirmed that the Marriott wants that indeed.   But this is not new, besides it is part of the commitments with the government about the Hadicurari fishing center.  The old center was old, was right before the new Surf Club that Marriott was building, and didn’t actually fit it the surroundings.  After negotiations with the government and the fishermen on relocating the center elsewhere, the Marriott committed to invest almost 4 million dollars in a new fishing center and pier; part of the commitments with the government was also that no other buildings will be permitted on the beach.  When the center was complete, the hotel thought that everybody was pleased and that the government would then relocate the other 10 water sport businesses on that particular beach.

Independent Water-sport Foundation Aruba (IWFA) is convinced that after having invested in Hadicurari, the Marriott now thinks that they have the right on a private beach.  It was nice that the hotel had built a new fishing center, but that’s something that nobody, especially the fishermen needed.  IWFA said that the water sporters will use all laws to fight and resist Marriott’s plans.  The beaches are public property and if the hotel is allowed to decide on who can earn her living on the beach, it means that the beaches are being privatized.  The problem is not that the water sport buildings interfere with the view.  The hotel herself has many buildings on the beach, like palapa’s, bars, and shower facilities, for which they don’t even have a permit, and the DOW is aware of that.  So if the government has to meet her commitments and relocate all the buildings on the beach, it also includes Marriott’s buildings.

The real problem is that the hotel does not want competition.  It wants to replace the local water sport businesses with a few big ones, with whom it has an arrangement.  The hotel thinks that with a lot of money it can arrange everything.  But the businesses are there for a very long time, some of them for even 20 years; they have invested a lot of money in those businesses.  This is a fight for equal treatment.  Besides, if Marriott gets her way, all other hotels will follow.  The Hyatt is already sending cruise-tourists away form what it calls ‘her’ beach saying that the beach is private property.

Hey Marriot,I am a do not call list and you continue to call me about your specials to aruba. You advertise in the Birmingham paper as a top spring break location, safe for families.this is deceptive advertising.Stop the calls and be honest about FAMILY FRIENDLY,if raping our daughters is family friendly.

The article seems to intimate that the Aruban government made certain promises to Marriott. It could be that it made the investment to upgrade its facilities on the strength of these promises.

Hey, maybe Marriott will conclude that Aruba is run by a bunch of thugs and dishonest liars, and will decide that enough is enough. I don’t know how anyone could come to such a conclusion about Aruba, of course … can anyone think of anything dishonest they’ve done in, say, the last two years? … but you never know.

    3. Gary on March 5th, 2007 6:50 am

Hey, I thought the Aruban courts were corrupt. But Marriott, in a case involving billions, is content to sue there, rather than in New York or California like some people. Maybe the Aruban courts are honest after all. Maybe Beth and Dave should be filing any lawsuit there. After all, if it is good for Marriott, it is good for other Americans.

Sounds like some Arubans are getting desperate ? NO ?
Giggle, Giggle. Maybe you can go to Paulis or Joran or even the Kalpos and borrow a few bucks to tide you over till this all gets worked out .
Don’t you know ? LOL and to the Americans who have bought Homes timeshares and rent to live there in this Happy Island Maybe it is time to cut your losses and get the hell out of there before the islanders and their Govt set their sight’s on you ?

#3 Gary, I cant even imagine Beth or Dave ever wanting to see SATANS island again. Didnt you read what that woman on the beach called us. She said STUPID AMERICANS… thats how they feel. Its only about our MONEY. when MR GREEN isnt present they hate us.
HEY LIERUBA “and the walls came tumbling down”

Would be good for the hotel. Another way of isolating their guests from Aruba. The future probably will be protected enclaves for safety, if they want to stay in business.

i guess marriott wants to replace boeti’s “feel good supplies Inc.”, and “tent in the bushes” with companies that will leave more money in marriott’s pocket.

Aruba is a wonderful place to go!!!

If you are looking to get your loved ones

murdered, and never to be seen or heard from

ever again. If you are looking for a place

that will lie in your face, and refuse to look in to

suspicious happenings at every turn, ARUBA is right on the

      money for you.

      —–
      ARUBA, oh sweet Aruba
      —–

Home to the murdering, gang-raping, Van der

Sloots and Kalpoe criminals, and the corrupt Aruban Law

Enforcement! ARUBA kills Americans, and from the looks

of the Natalee Holloway “farce” of an investigation, they

appear to enjoy it! The gang-raping, murderous, Van der

Sloot / Kalpoe criminalistic carnivore clans still roam

free to continue to hunt & murder more defenseless, young,

      female tourists.

Book today? (None for me. I’d rather smack
myself in the head with a friggin pot, thanks!)

I predict someone will snuff them, and Aruba
will one day soon be able to bury these
      stinking rotted meat piles.

(I should write for Hallmark, huh?)

      J2K have really placed an
      IMMEASURABLE STAIN ON THE ISLAND!

However, clean up starts with a first step…

Aruba will dispose of their trash,

and start anew one day soon!

I know it will come. Aruba, you should always know

that day will be coming for you.

      -JUSTICE FOR NATALEE-
      Boycott Aruba

    10. Richard on March 5th, 2007 12:56 pm

Maybe the hotel guests will want to be sure they are protected from the locals, given their (the locals’) apparent indifference to crimes against tourists.

      ARUBA BLOWS

    12. dennisintn on March 5th, 2007 2:41 pm

you would have thought that marriott would have, after all these years, realized that they don’t undersand dutch law as perceived by arubans. “what we say and agree to today, will be different tomorrow, and it’s our island and we get to do what we want”.
      dennisintn

have you ever heard of a court case that was won against an islander by an off-islander? i didn’t think so.

    13. Maggie on March 5th, 2007 3:02 pm

#3 reading that was the most fun I’ve had without laughing.

The only time anyone does anything about anything on that island is when it involves money.. They even have paid liars for a price.

      Hey dennisintn!

That post makes me laugh & wanna rip some spines out all at the same time.

Yes….Carpe and I are co workers for a new HallMark *Sleep With One Eye Open* line.

    16. mayan_moons on March 5th, 2007 3:44 pm

lol Hey Maggie! that was a chuckler was it not.

    17. mayan_moons on March 5th, 2007 3:48 pm

Is it just me or what……i don’t wanna vacation anywhere where i have to hide behind concrete walls. Knowing that on the other side of those walls are locals that hate you & want to rob you, maybe rape & kill you.

    18. vicki on March 5th, 2007 4:14 pm

yeah Mayan, or where they have cameras in every room…hmmm

    19. mayan_moons on March 5th, 2007 4:32 pm

      hey vicki!

You’re right…..i’ve seen alotta bad things & the ugly side of people in my life but i really never even dreamed that locals on what maybe used to be a paradise of sorts, would be taping secretly tourists in their room. Or that they could be so cold blooded as these people are.

In fact, he (Jacobs) was so confident that she was just partying it up or on drugs that he told us this particular bar would be the best place to find her. However, he did warn us to watch our drinks very carefully, adding that sometimes people put drugs into them.
      .
      Page 10
While customers must pass by a bouncer at the door, there was no indication that he was stopping anyone from entering. The bar was packed with teenagers doing Jell-O shots and sleazy-looking island boys preying on the beautiful young female tourist.
      .
I did not want to stay inside, so we hung out around the street corners. In less than two hours, we probably experienced at least ten to fifteen offers from various drug dealers who wanted us to buy from them.
      .
      Page 16
During our daylight searches throughout the island, our group came across many abandoned houses where drug addicts had left razors and other drug paraphernalia. Some were filled with foul smelling odors, feces, urine, cardboard boxes they used as blankets or beds, and general trash. One of those houses was located right next to a fine restaurant near the hotel area and a McDonald’s.
      .
Several times, people came into the hotel to meet with other locals and an apparent drug deal was taking place. The person would come in to scope out the area prior to doing the deal.

Another hotel guest sought out Plummer and warned him that a man was on the beach trying to sell drugs to the students. “I just asked him to leave them alone,” Plummer said. “He went ballistic and threatened to slash me up.” Plummer called the police, and met with the hotel manager on the day they left to express his concerns about the incident

Maybe Beth and Dave will go the travelshow…..its harder to sweep Natalee under the rug when everyone attending have to pass by Dave and Beth on their way into the show.

One can vision the in room TV Channel that plays hotel news and events, fade from black, waves crashing on the beach, palm trees, island music, kids playing in the sand, couples walking on the beach, then the camera pulls back to reveal the hotel from the ocean along with security fences.

New slogan, “Come to Marriott Aruba where our 16 foot fences provide you with a little slice of heaven.

Or you can leave the safe confines of Marriott and take you own life into your own hands. Then a head shot of Joran, Paulus and the Kalpoes. Finally fade to black, withe the words swimming into the black frame…Justice for Natalee.
