The Boulder, CO prosecutors have dropped the charges against John Mark Karr in the murder case of 6 year old JonBenet Ramsey. According to reports, Karr’s DNA does not match the DNA found at the crime scene.
BOULDER, Colo. (Reuters) -Colorado prosecutors won’t charge schoolteacher John Mark Karr with the murder of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey after tests showed his DNA does not match DNA found in her underwear, two local TV stations reported on Monday.
This makes the case even more of a joke than the media circus that the confession of John Mark Karr had become. What could the Boulder DA have had an evidence to arrest John Karr in Thailand and fly him back to the United States? Karr’s family has claimed from the outset that he was with them when he claimed to have been in Colorado. Now with no DNA match, there is no case.
Amid skepticism over Karr’s claims to have been with the former Little Miss Colorado when she died, legal experts said that it would be difficult to bring the case to trial without a DNA match.
A spokeswoman for the Boulder district attorneys office could not immediately be reached for comment.
Prosecutors have disclosed none of their evidence against Karr, who after his arrest in Thailand professed his love for child beauty queen JonBenet and said she died by “accident.”
Charges Dropped Against Confessed JonBenet Killer John Karr
Public defender Seth Temin told reporters, “The warrant on Mr. Karr has been dropped by the district attorney.”
He said, “They are not proceeding with the case.”
So much for the media reports over the weekend, that the JonBenet Case May Not Hinge on DNA.
The best-case scenario for prosecutors would be slam-dunk DNA evidence linking John Mark Karr to the battered and strangled body of 6-year- old JonBenet Ramsey.
Without it, experts say, it’s still possible _ but much more difficult _ to build a strong murder case against the 41-year-old teacher who has said he was there when the girl died 10 years ago but stopped short of an outright confession.
