Prelude to Press Conference … (Prime Minister Oduber will be speaking)

4:08 pm – (Prime Minister) A cordial beginning and the Aruban Government stands behind the family of Natalee Holloway. Local and International (US) efforts doing everything to find her.

“We will not tolerate anything that harms our friends from the United States or other International visitors”.

4:12 pm – Saturday & Sunday we will ask all churches in Aruba to pray for Natalee & her family, Keep hope alive.

4:14 pm – “Nobody on this Island is above the law, no one will have privilege. The Dutch system is different from the American one. We want to solve the crime”.

4:16 pm – Aruba is known for its safety but we are disappointed at what may have happened. Concerned as a father for Natalee and her family.

4:20 pm – PM is stating that these things happen in countries around the world and that Aruba has passed laws against money laundering and has strict drug laws. It is a concern of Aruba. Wants the media to say good things about the island. He knows that when bad things happen they will be reported.

4:25 pm – PM does not want to comment directly on Carlos And Charlie’s. Any establishment not operating within Aruban standards will be dealt with.

4:27 pm – Question: regarding reports from Fox News regarding Drug cartel influence on putting pressure on Aruban Govt to solve case. (WOW)

PM – stating basically no one puts pressure or influence on Aruban Govt.

4:30 pm – PM “pity that any one is accusing us of drugs or money laundering”

Red – LETS HOPE THE QUESTIONS GET BACK TO NATALEE HOLLOWAY NOT ARUBA

Tom – The PM did a good job of explaining the Islands position, but he tended to do a laundry list of the same accomplishments whenever asked a tough question. They need to bring out the police and judiciary tomorrow am.

Red – Sounds like Aruba is a little miffed at Fox News, I do not think that Bill O’Reilly should be buying any time sharing any time soon.

I would say that this was “damage control” from this mornings Press Conference when the Q&A got extremely heated and contentious. The Prime Minister came in as the voice of reason to quell the MSM from going into hyper-mode. Their was a vast difference between how the two conferences were held. The Prime Minister was in a difficult spot and was trying to stop the bleeding. It is difficult to balance between the needs of the family and his island when the eyes of the world are upon you.

From Fox News, PM: ‘We Will Not Stop Until We Have Answers’

ORANJESTAD, Aruba — Finding 18-year-old Natalie Holloway is currently Aruba’s “No. 1 goal,” the country’s prime minister said Thursday after three more suspects were arrested in connection with the American tourist’s disappearance.

“We stand behind the family of Natalie Holloway in full support,” Prime Minister Nelson Orlando Oduber said. “This investigation must move along swiftly … we will not stop until we have answers. We are shocked and completely distraught.”

Holloway was on a five-day graduation vacation with 100 classmates and seven chaperones when she disappeared without a trace. The Alabaman was last seen at a local bar about 1:30 a.m. Memorial Day, getting into a car with three islanders she’d apparently befriended. Those three islanders were questioned and released last week but were arrested again on Thursday. Two other men are also in custody and being questioned.

As stated during the live blogging,

The Aruba police and other international authorities “are doing everything in their power to find Natalie,” Oduber said, adding that he’s been in touch with U.S. officials like Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Alabama Gov. Bob Riley and Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions.

“The government of Aruba has always made the safety … of our community and our visitors a top priority,” the prime minister said during a press conference that Holloway’s mother also attended. “Aruba has very strong ties to the United States. We will not tolerate any activities that harm our American friends or any of our international visitors, or part of our community at large.”

I understand restriction of Danish law but I hope the answer will provide a better sense that their are being honest.

Maybe they could explain tactical reasons…

    3. scott on June 9th, 2005 4:22 pm

Aruba is based on Dutch law. “Danish” refers to something of or relating to Denmark.
      Sincerely,
      The Stickler

    4. phil on June 9th, 2005 4:24 pm

Well some may have been above the law but they are not now…questions should be

Why else did you wait to areest these boys???

What are you doing now to solve this case???

Why are you looking in South America???

    5. Tom on June 9th, 2005 4:25 pm

PM is doing a good job, being very fair and balanced.

His being in front is good because the press can not ask about specifics about the crime as it outside of his scope.

This is the press conference that should have been held this morning

    6. Quart Knee on June 9th, 2005 4:26 pm

      Is there a blog?

    7. Quart Knee on June 9th, 2005 4:27 pm

      Sorry, overlooked above.
      Clever me.

    8. phil on June 9th, 2005 4:36 pm

Tom…the problem is he seems like a front. Can we have some information? It would make me believe they are working towards solving this matter.

The PM is just giving us a good face…

    9. Tom on June 9th, 2005 4:38 pm

      Phil you are correct.

The problem is that there is no interplay between the political and the judiciary in Aruba. Except I am sure in back channels, and that has completely blown up now.

    10. Bill on June 9th, 2005 4:47 pm

I wouldn’t worry too much about O’Rielly, et al. The minute there’s a verdict in the Michael Jackson case you won’t be able to get attention to this story with a shoe horn.

      Dear Friends

Regarding our Prime Minister’s conference today I must inform the following:
The press conference was to clear up all the lies about Aruba. Speculations that were being made, hopefully have been brought to an end. The focus is on finding Natalee and not make up stories because we feel the urge to do so. I find our PM was Honest about what is really happening, good and bad. He gave the statement in the name of the Aruban public and his Goverment. The morning Conference was givin by the authorities to inform the media what the new developments are. The Officers of justice have their own Spokes persons.

On a Small note: Just to show how reporters act, CNN’s Reporters let the conference just 3 minutes after the conference started. When the Reporter of CNN was approached this morning and was asked to give a statement why he is making up stories that are not true, He ignored the reporters and walked away. Later he pulled on of the local Reporters aside and told him to better watch out who they are dealing with, because he has the power to destroy Aruba and he will if we don’t back off. Do you think CNN is Dependable? They where the ones who started saying that Aruba is a big Prostitute, Cartel island, and then Fox News followed with the allegations from O’ Reilly.

I Hope we start focusing now on the search instead of making up stories. Hope you all agree .

sorry gabe- unfortunately in america, between politicas and hollywood some people have their own agenda and forget what this is all about… it is shamefull
we love aruba dont forget that
we just dont like how it has become the past few years,

    13. Jacob on June 9th, 2005 7:13 pm

CNN and FOX are reporting the truth, Aruba is known for major international drug smuggling, even the CIA.gov website states that.

The people of Aruba do not like the news reports because the news are stating the truth, and sometimes the truth hurts.

Aruba should be blaming themselves, it is their country which condones that Carlos N Charlies restaurant where young girls are given lots of alcohol and encouraged to expose themselves, Aruba is just upset now that the whole world knows about the seedy activites going on in Aruba.

    14. SoCal Lawyer on June 9th, 2005 7:53 pm

Anyone else notice the irony of the google ads below these comments inviting travellers to go to the Aruba Beach Club and Hyatt Regency Aruba?

      GET A LIVE

    19. Jacob on June 9th, 2005 9:05 pm

Well folks, i think the gravy train is coming to an end, the amount of tourists entering Aruba is already down, I expect more significant decreases in travel to Aruba in the coming months. These Arubans that prey on young American children will be held accountable for their actions, and the establishment that condones the immoral activity of young girls exposing themsleves needs to be shut down, and if not shut down – then expect a bigger drop in the amount of tourists going to Aruba. Aruba can no longer get away with doctoring up their crime statistics to make themselves look safer than they really are, the media is all over this, people around the world now know the name of Joran Andreas Petrus Van Der Sloot, who has direct connections to the government of Aruba.

Aruba has been stonewalling missing-persons cases for too long now, they cannot cover this case up though, and I don’t care what these Aruban residents on here think, if the officials in Aruba wants to safeguard themselves against a problem like this arising – all they had to do was put a lock on the front doors of that CnC Restaurant dump, but they refused to, I have absolutely no sympathy for Aruba or for anyone living in Aruba that is going to lose significant revenue over this incident. Carlos n Charlies is a major problem, and Aruba fails to deal with that problem, now they can deal with the consequences.

hey jacob, you seem to know a lot about this case. i will be there on jun 25 through july5, (9th time). i have a couple of questions. first, let’s say that the three arrested on wed are now the primary suspects. how could the aruban authorities not be able to get any info from a 17 yr old and two 18 year olds. second, by now the fbi would have cracked them. the two brothers look like idiot-savants, minus the savant. the dutch kid looks to be just a normal 17 year old, from what i’ve seen of his yahoo profile. granted, most people dont put on a profile ” i want to grow up to be a internationally known murderer”. i agree that something is going on here, but what i can not quite figure it out. say that they did take her to the beach and i.e. ( killed her accidentially, killed her purposely, she drowned), seem to me they would have told the authorities something by now, this seems very odd. i dont know too many teenagers that would not buckle under the amount of pressure that their under. you said yourself, that everyone under the sun is on their asses. i also understand that the longest sentence anyone could get in this case may be only 5 years. so why not confess and give the hollaway family some peace. im quite sure that joran’s father wants a conclusion as fast as possible. it’s not making his family too popular these days. if he were somehow implicated in a cover up…. he’s done on that island. im not sure these three morons are actually the culprits. i don’t really know what to believe. no evidence means something… like she might not be dead. that dummy jennifer wilbanks left with just jogging clothes and apparently had other clothes stashed. im sure that natalee would call her mother if she could. so i dont think she left voluntarily, i guess what is very striking is that if she were killed or accidentally dies at arashi, authorities would have most like recovered her body or clothes, a body in the water eventually will float because of the gases in the body being unable to escape, it would eventually come ashore after about 5-7 days. where i live we have three rivers, some time it takes a while for a body to surface, but they all do. if they buried a body, the authorities would have a site or the cadaver dogs would have picked it up. i dont think she s on aruba unless she is hiding out, and i think that is very remote. im not sure what is happening. the more i type the more questions i have. this is indeed very strange.. maybe you can answer some of this rambling diatribe…
      thanx

frankly I think the American way of making police press conferences a circus is harmful, the American press is way too impatient and too many police departments and DAs get off on the circus themselves

the less you say the better for the investigation itself UNTIL IT IS CONCLUDED, you give out too much information too soon you compromise the investigation, it’s common sense but since Watergate, the American press is too obsessed with conspiracies,

      IMO

The focus should be on the choices made by the individuals involved in this tragedy; in most–not all–but most cases, a mixture of drugs, alcohol and single people who are not chaperoned is a blueprint for some kind of disaster; getting drunk or high is a choice, just as sobriety is a choice. Unfortunately, when one chooses intoxication, self control, judgement and the power of choice are temporarily lost–but not responsibility for the actions that take place while in a stupor; boozers are losers and abstainers are gainers. Unfortunately, sometimes the consequences don’t stop with looking and behaving stupidly. Sometimes a capital crime takes place…. one life lost, another ruined forever…. Getting drunk is not a harmless choice….

    34. mak on June 19th, 2005 3:01 pm

FOR CHRISTS SAKE …. QUIT TRYING TO SELL US ARUBA!
I’ve been to aruba several times, It’s a great place to buy drugs, frigging everywhere.
Oh Roberto, I think the focus should be about supporting fellow human beings in time of need. That is the stupidest statement I’ve ever seen. Next you’ll be telling us that “Women that wear short dresses deserve to get raped”.

    35. Roberto on June 20th, 2005 8:32 pm

It’s hard to support people who’ve put themselves in jeopardy by getting intoxicated. Once you’re drunk, it’s too late to think clearly before you act on impulses that may or may not be healthjy and wise. Sobriety greatly enhances the chances of staying safe. You put words in my mouth, because you are unable to get to the underlying cause, which is the mess that happens when people get intoxicated. In case you need it spelled out for you mak, I am referring to men getting intoxicated as well as women. And in most cases, drunk men are far more dangerous.
