UPDATE I: Search crews have found the two missing boys safe at Red River Gorge.

It took 20 hours, but a family’s nightmare turned into a dream come true: Two young boys who disappeared from a campsite at the rugged Red River Gorge in eastern Kentucky were found safe and sound Friday.

Wolfe County Search & Rescue announced at about 2 p.m. that rescuers had located Michael Esposito, 5, and Adrian Ross, 7. The boys walked off into the woods near their Koomer Ridge campsite at about 6 p.m. Thursday, prompting a frantic, around-the-clock search through the hilly, heavily wooded wilderness.

Cousins, ages 5 and 7, missing from Wolfe County campground found safe.

Two small boys who disappeared Thursday evening from Koomer Ridge Campground in Daniel Boone National Forest were found alive Friday afternoon, according to Kentucky State Police.

Cousins Michael Esposito, 5, of Batavia, Ohio and Adrian Ross, 7, of Bloomington, Ind., went missing around 6 p.m. Thursday in Red River Gorge in Wolfe County while Esposito’s father and grandfather were setting up the tent and fixing dinner, according to WLEX-TV, the NBC affiliate in Lexington.

The boys were found about 20 hours after they disappeared, approximately one mile from their campsite, by Daniel Boone National Forest budget officer Kelly Moore near the Silver Mine Arch Trail. According to WLEX-TV, Moore yelled and the children called back. Other than a few bumps and bruises they were fine. The boys were examined by members of the Wolfe County Ambulance Service, then returned to their parents.

Esposito’s mother, Julia, told WLEX-TV Thursday that a miscommunication between her husband and her father apparently led to the boys’ disappearance.
