Two Missing (Madison Wallace & Lyle Eagletail) after Jumping into Big Sioux River in South Dakota to Save Six Year Old Garrett Wallace (Update: Body of Madison Wallace Found in River, Update: Body of Lyle Eagletail Found)

 

Two individuals are missing after they jumped into the Big Sioux River in South Dakota to save a 6 year old boy.

Authorities stated that the boy, 6 year old Garrett Wallace,  is safe; however, the two the two adults who jumped into the Big Sioux river were swept away and are considered dead as the search for the two has become a recovery and no longer a rescue mission. The two jumped into the river near Sioux Falls around 6 p.m. local time on Thursday after the young boy fell in.  The Police have identified the young boy as Garrett Wallace of Vermillion, SD.  At a press conference on  Friday afternoon, the two individuals who jumped into the river were identified as the boy’s 16-year-old sister Madison Wallace, and the man as Lyle Eagletail of Sioux Falls. 

Emergency crews searched Friday for the bodies of a man and woman who jumped into the icy waters of the Big Sioux River in South Dakota to save a six-year-old child before the two were swept off by the raging current themselves.

The boy is safe, but Sioux Falls authorities said on Friday morning that the effort to find the two adults is now considered a recovery and no longer a rescue mission.

The two jumped into the river near Sioux Falls around 6 p.m. local time on Thursday after the young boy fell in, according to local NBC affiliate KDLT.

Police identified the young boy as Garrett Wallace of Vermillion, S.D. at a Friday afternoon press conference, according to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. The woman was identified as the boy’s 16-year-old sister Madison Wallace, and the man as Lyle Eagletail of Sioux Falls, the local paper reported.

UPDATE I: One body recovered, one missing at falls … crews recovered the body of 16-year-old Madison Wallace

Foam, cold conditions and ice hampered Sioux Falls Fire Rescue workers Friday as they worked to recover the bodies of two people who drowned near the falls after jumping in to rescue a boy.

After clearing most of the foam and removing thousands of pounds of ice from the river, crews recovered the body of 16-year-old Madison Wallace of Vermillion from the Big Sioux River, said Sioux Falls Fire Chief Jim Sideras.

Lyle Eagletail’s body has not been found.

UPDATE II: Crews Recover Body of Lyle Eagletail From South Dakota River

Crews on Saturday recovered the body of a second person who drowned in an icy South Dakota river while trying to save a 6-year-old boy, authorities said.

A search boat discovered the body of Lyle Francis Eagletail, 28, in the Big Sioux River shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday, said Jeff Helm, division chief for Sioux Falls Fire and Rescue.

Eagletail had been near the river in Falls Park Thursday evening when he saw 6-year-old Garrett Martin Wallace either fall into the frothing water or become obscured by the gathering foam. Garrett’s 16-year-old sister had jumped in to save the boy and Eagletail followed. The boy later emerged from the river and was uninjured.
