LA Lakers Beat Orlando Magic for NBA Title and LA Fans Riot Outside the Staple Center … 25 Arrested

What would have happened if the Lakers lost?

Last night the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Orlando Magic 99-86 in Game 5 of the NBA finals to win their 15th Championship, four games to one. However, outside the Staple Center, home of the Lakers, fans rioted, damaged police cars and threw rocks in celebration.

Hundreds celebrated in the streets outside Staples Center after the Los Angeles Lakers’ NBA title win Sunday night, with some revelers damaging police cruisers, throwing rocks and bottles at officers and setting bonfires in the street, authorities said.

About 25 people were arrested, most part of a rowdy crowd that split off on to surrounding streets after police declared the gathering an unlawful assembly, officer Karen Rayner said.

I guess it was a good thing that the Lakers won. Imagine what would have occurred from their fans if they had lost? What would have occurred, would they have burned down the city? Oh, and by the way, the game was actually played in Florida. Also, the game was not broadcast at The Staple Center as in previous years in an attempt to avoid trouble that had happened in past years.

Aerial television footage showed people jumping on a police car, rocking vehicles attempting to pass through the crowd, setting small trees on fire and throwing fireworks and flares set up by police. No injuries were reported.

A gas station was looted and several cars, buses and a news van were vandalized, police said.

LA law enforcement had been prepared and on heightened alert as a matter of precaution. According to police, they had no reason to expect unrest. I guess they might want to rethink that policy in the future.

Both the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will have extra officers on the streets watching for celebrations getting out of control. Officials said that they have no reason to expect unrest, but that they want to be prepared.

UPDATE I: From Michelle Malkin, what a great comparison. While fans riot and loot LA after Laker victory … Iranian youth risked their lives to protest election fraud.

What a sad comparison … We have people rioting in the streets in Iran over freedom and free elections and we have losers rioting and looting in the US over a stupid basketball game.

      Red,

hows the comparison between the soccer hooligans and the US sports fans?

Here you never hear about big fights at US sports

    3. Pete on June 15th, 2009 8:46 am

Another example of loser mentality by (dare I say it) an oppressed minority. It was just an excuse to get free goods.
I wonder if any Lakers player will make a comment to the absurdity of the riot (most likely NOT!!)
But then again whon The Prez has them come to the White House maybe he can make a comment even if it is after the fact (most likely NOT!!!!!)

    4. Carpe on June 15th, 2009 8:54 am

I can’t stand people who riot over good things.

It ruins it for all the respectable rioters. LOL

If you are gonna riot, dang it… at least have
a good reason to be pissed.

      >BUNCH OF CRASH TEST DUMMIES!

    5. Dolf on June 15th, 2009 9:41 am

      or another nice tactic

if you win, destroy your own home

(city officials don’t really like Ajax or Feijnoord winning anything)

It is Obamas fault somehow I am sure. How dare Scared Monkeys post an article that does not deal with the President.

    7. ANewGirl on June 15th, 2009 10:51 am

#6- Jack Hammerhead—What a sarcastic Idiot you are! Believe you missed the whole point of the post- but then again, you must be another loser yourself who thinks that the only articles posted on SM have to do with President Obama and Politics. DUH !

No–it’s not Obama’s fault that Americans with that “hood mentality” rioted . Since MORONS like you are still blaming everything that’s wrong with our Country on GWB anyway…you can’t even read a post about the NBA without somehow bashing those on the right somewhere along the line.

Grow up, you pathetic Troll, & go get a life in the process.

      Lakers are NBA CHAMPS!

Nothing you say here on your bullshit blog can take that away.

#3, never in the history of the world have these minorities been afforded the opportunities that they have in this country due to the policies set by a white government back in the sixties. I disagree with your oppressed label.

With that said, I see a few honkeys in that picture too.

It’s good to see the “Civilizationally-Challenged”
out there working off their heavy emotional investment
in the game of Basketball by burning, stealing, breaking,
other people’s stuff. Hey, it’s cheaper than a shrink!

Pittsburgh Penguins just one the Stanley Cup not a single ticket issued. 300,000 at the parade, no trouble at all….better fans or better city?

Hey new girl, this is what you said about me in your mindless rant “sarcastic Idiot, loser, MORON, pathetic Troll. And you say I need to grow up. And where did I bash anyone. By the way, post number 8 speaks very highly of this blog. I love it.

#13- Jack…the whole point of the article was that what is the need for violence and looting when something good happens and there is really reason to celebrate like this? It doesn’t matter what color anyone’s skin is—-what kind of people (besides very drunk ones) have to take to the streets and destroy things?

FYI— I called you names because I am sick to death of the haters on this site…not to mention we can all post what we like.

@#8—- I’m from Boston so the Lakers suck, just like you. When KG is back next season, we’ll take Banner #18 away from you again, no worries! If you hate this “bullshit” blog so much, then take your lame ass out of here.

      Have a Nice Evening =)

Gee, how would they have reacted if they had lost?

      criminal behavior

      1. says it all.

    21. Scott on June 17th, 2009 11:21 am

I can say something…the Bulls teams of the 90s, the Spurs, the Celtics and Lakers of the 80s, the Rockets with The Dream and Clyde and the Jet would have DESTROYED this Laker team. True, they are the champs of 2009 but what a sad watered down game the NBA has become.

The Bulls team with Jordan and Pippen would have held Kobe in check and Jordan would have ripped this LA team apart.

F LA! Bunch of gang bangers and gang banger f**gs!

    22. Dolf on June 17th, 2009 4:16 pm

Have to agree with Scott on this

      (damn, this is scaring|)

    23. Rusty Bridges on June 18th, 2009 2:33 pm

Scott, you forgot the rebounding by Rodman and you left out the Detroit “Bad Boys” Pistons of ’88-’90

    24. ANewGirl on June 19th, 2009 7:39 am

Dolf—Are you drunk again? I don’t hate. But I don’t mince words either. If people are going to come on a public blog and post their hateful BS, they will be objected to with colorful speech if it’s fitting.

Are you the moral compass for America now as well, Dolf? While I do appreciate some of your comments, I think it’s time for you to shut up and take your Euro Ass out of here.

    25. Dolf on June 22nd, 2009 9:30 am

I am only my own moral compass, the US seems to have lost it a long time ago.

big fuss about a boob on tv (Janet jackson), but its ok to by an automatic weapon when your 16(?)
