Rev. Joseph Lowery, Was This What America Really Needed? Race-based benediction: “When white will embrace what is right”

This was hardly the time or the place to make such a comment. Didn’t Obama say today in his Inauguration Speech, “On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.” I guess the good Reverend Lowery did not get the memo.

There has been so much talk about Obama bringing together Republicans and Democrats, whites and blacks and starting a new era and tone in the White House for America. A funny thing happened on the way to the swearing in … an ill timed and ill tempered race based benediction by Rev. Joseph Lowery that was just really uncalled for. Was this really necessary? This is exactly the very stuff that many feared would have occurred if former Obama pastor Reverend Jeremiah Wright had done the benediction. This is fellowship?

Pray that “white will embrace what is right!!!” As Hot Air states, Didn’t whites just do that by electing Jesus Christ president? As Allah Pundit also asks, “that Rick Warren’s pretty controversial, huh?”

“We ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to give back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man, and when white will embrace what is right, Lowery said.

Michelle Malkin also questions the message that such a benediction sends. One wonders what type of reaction they are looking to get, or do they not want people to get along?

But the benediction’s eloquence was marred by glib racialism.

Lowery got big cheers when he weaved in a weird prayer rap expressing his hope for a future in which the “brown would stick around,” the “yellow would be mellow,” the “red man would get ahead, man,” and the “white would embrace the right.”

The “white would embrace the right?”

Who wrote that line? Jeremiah Wright? And what would Obama’s grandparents and mother have to say?

If they do not nip this nonsense in the bud, its going to get way out of control. These not so subtle references can come to no good.

If I as a white American taxpayer were to make the same bigoted black statements against me (using the word “black” instead of “white”), I’d be called a racist.

Obama’s pseudo mentors from the Lord (Wright, Lowery, Farrakhan, et al.) preach hate, not love.

Where’s the Leadership?? Or was that just another parade?

    4. Susan on January 21st, 2009 5:15 am

Isn’t Lowery associated with the NAACP?

How can a “man of God” spew such hateful racist remarks out of his mouth?

Looks like Obama’s got another Rev Wrong on his hands…

    5. super dave on January 21st, 2009 7:06 am

WHAT IS RIGHT WOULD BE FOR BORAT OBAMA TO STEP DOWN AND TAKE HIS RACIST PREACHERS WITH HIM. THIS JUST ASSURED THAT THE HATE WILL BE CARRIED ON BY THE AFRICANS.

    6. Rusty Bridges on January 21st, 2009 7:30 am

Yellow will be mellow? WTF is this guy a blubbering fool or what. He obviously has alzheimers and is spewing some deep rooted hatred.

Hey, african american people wake up! Most of your delusions of the white man keeping you down are brought on by hate mongering fools such as this man.

I agree that there are quite a few white racists left in this country, but this guy is stirring the pot.

    7. super dave on January 21st, 2009 8:17 am

according to Native Americans Against Obama. obama hides behind joseph lowery to pass his message of hate & racism. in otherwords, obama is basically a chicken . full of promises but runs from the truth.

I think there is a new language of inclusion that not everyone is aware of. It’s not that some are biased against whites, it’s just that they are biased for/in favor of others.

I’ve seen some articles in the media suggesting that the foreclosure problem affects minorities more than whites. What about the struggling ones labeled “white”?

Why not just speak of ALL those in need of help? Is this part of the new language of inclusion? If you’re not on the special interest group short list, you are SOL?

When children of all colors and races and characteristics are failing, why address just a short list of inclusion? Why not address ALL people that need help?

I saw this “new language of inclusion” explained by an African American man on an episode of Wife Swap earlier this week. ‘It’s not that I’m biased against whites, I’m biased for African Americans.’ He was not open to discussion.

Get set for new labels, a new language of inclusion and no more talk about EXCLUDING anyone!

I’ll have America to know I do what is right, I was very upset by the comment as i sit beside a black co-worker thinking positive about President Obama and having faith that this country with him will go foward until the Reverend Joseph Lowery spoke I understand that back in the day that blacks were treated unfairly and I regret my ancestors if they had anything to do with it but it is 2009 and time to move on we have a biracial president now with black and white mixed blood he even called himself a “mut” so you should all be joyous but instead you still want to say racists things. I’ll have you to know I pay taxes in this country, I educate black and white, yellow, red and brown students as a teacher, I obey the laws and protect my home, I volunteer at a boys home for abused kids and teens which are of all different race, volunteer to give CPR classes to all races at the American Red Cross and have two foster African-American sons that my wife and I are trying to adopt not to mention several other children we have fostered for some years. I am very angry at the President for the poor choice in this bigot racist that has no clue of what white America is, I tried going back to school and was denied FAFSA but my black co-worker with the same wages received all the benefits and he has no children go figure Reverend Lowery. Again this shows the true bigot colors of Barack Obama a man I was looking foward to running our country in a positive way just like Reverend Wright they are all racist if they don’t like how America has been lately they need to go somewhere else. Now my dreams are dashed.

    11. Mary UK on January 21st, 2009 8:41 am

I only watched the yesterday to see if the event would/could be carried off with CLASS!!! they didnt dissappoint, for Booing Bush, Obamas veilled refferences to, sort of good over evil and then this guy!!!!! WTH !!! i only hope the road he takes us down is not the road of NO WAY BACK!!

    12. Renee on January 21st, 2009 8:58 am

Why is it that this racism is not only allowed, but cheered for by our country? Why isn’t this reported on the news regarding the potential backlash on the new Presidency? What does this say of our journalists and their ability to report the news fairly?

    13. miron on January 21st, 2009 9:07 am

Where does BO get these people? He must have an endless supply of them. Pathetic!

    14. Michelle in MS on January 21st, 2009 9:16 am

And these people call themselves Christian. They do not represent Christians, they represent themselves. How sad. Every time I think we are moving forward to end racial tension & division something like this happens. They just will not let it go. Take a look Mr. Lowery at your new President. He’s black. Does that not speak volumes that this country can elect a black President? Why did he feel the need to use those words in prayer?

    15. Freebrid on January 21st, 2009 10:00 am

AS I said yesterday the black people are the ones who keep racism going.. they want let go of something that happened 100 years ago.. all I see is hand out, hand out…. now I wonder how many people will be pissed I said this.. but it’s O.K. for the Rev Wrong to say what he thinks… in order to a a nation as whole U have to put aside the passed.. I see that NEVER happening in the United States..

    16. Brenda in Virginia on January 21st, 2009 10:25 am

Renee, if mainstream media reported fairly…we the people would have the FACTS and Obama would not be president. THAT is why they have no desire to be “fair”.

That said, we best all watch out on this Fairness Doctrine that has and will again come before congress. I forces “politically correct” speech and “fair time” for other points of view. Dangerous…extremely dangerous to our freedom of speech (what is left of it).

I liken this ridiculous “we must be fair in our speech” crap to the fair housing act. I cannot advertize that I will not allow families with chilren or of a certain religion or race to rent my home. Really? I refuse to rent to an unmarried couple or gays….so my house is no longer for rent. Sold the new one, moved back into the old. I won’t be renting to anyone other than who I CHOOSE to rent MY HOME to. Since when does gov’t get to decide what I do with my personal property??

    17. Brenda in Virginia on January 21st, 2009 10:27 am

Michelle, I did not viewh the Obamapalooza Tues…couldn’t bring myself to watch that funeral for America..but know that what this “preacher” spat out was not a prayer, but simply another speech to produce retoric.

    18. ANewGirl on January 21st, 2009 10:35 am

Oh, look here…..A Reverend Wright Clone, isn’t that SPECIAL?????

How long will it take for The Chosen One to disassociate himself with this one? PLEASE! Is this some kind of a twisted joke? I’m not laughing.

Here is the entire quote in context:

“….help us work for that day when black will not be asked to give back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man, and when white will embrace what is right.”

You may or may not appreciate the feeble attempt at poetry but there is nothing in that passage that is even a little bit offensive to me.

    20. caesu on January 21st, 2009 11:12 am

maybe if you read about this man, and what he has been through during the civil rights movement.
and if you listen to his full benediction.

then most would understand that he is not trying to offend anyone and actually trying to bring people together with this rhyme.

black people: stand on your own. nobody is holding you down. yes, white people had slaves, so did native americans, african americans, asians, arabs, egyptians.
there is racism in everybody. it;s not going away as you witnessed by obama slurring the south and bush. also obama,s racist preacher blatantly preaching racism at the inauguration. this is total bullshit from a wanna be racist president.

Dotratic…the offensiveness of the comment is saying is that the “white people are prejudice against the blacks” which as a white person I would say “no I am not”…and he is saying that “we are all in the wrong because we do not accept black people”…. Dotratic…that is racist comment and offensive to me…

That also keeps the illution that white people are black haters from the era of the past.

    23. Sharon Chicago on January 21st, 2009 2:10 pm

The blacks need to get over this persecution
thing that their ancestors had to endure (unfortunately)… This holds them back from
walking in freedom and knowing that they are respected … It keeps their self worth down and keeps them telling themselves…gee I am still a slave still persecuted still have no rights etc etc.etc…which of course is a lie…So with saying that I am only glad for one thing about O’Bama becoming president…only one folks..and it is because he is black I am glad…maybe this will free up those black people who walk around hanging on to the concept that they are still less than and blaming the white folks for it…

They were set free long ago…now they should walk in that freedom….

      Bob:

In some cases, even, I hate ‘whitey’ as you call him. But, we know how you think! If you had things your way, we’d all be living under oppression of one kind or another. But, what does it matter, according to you, we’re all going to be dead, anyway. (per post at MLK page)

And… I don’t care what you say you’ve done for Natalee. There is no doubt in my mind that she’d hate hearing the garbage that comes out of your mouth~ Ugh!

    30. bob on January 22nd, 2009 6:02 am

Hope, I only speak truth. Blacks are 50 times more likely to commit violent crimes against whites than vice versa. Recently in Los Angeles a dozen young blacks nearly beat two white women to death. Why? Because they were white. There was hardly a mention of this in the left-wing socialist media. And when their trial was over, only a couple got a little slap on the wrist.

Because of racist affirmative action programs, I can’t get many jobs though I’m qualified. The blacks have many advantages in this now socialist nation.

    31. super dave on January 22nd, 2009 7:12 am

the civil rights movement was in the 60′s. this is 2009. people today had nothing to do with whatever happened to lowery.
that’s like saying all black people are responsible for everything bad that happens to other people.
i don’t feel one ounce of guilt for what happened in the 60′s. i nor my family had any part in it. that’s an old excuse. again africans need to delve into history and see how many of their own people sold them into slavery. muslim & black slave traders alike were responsible for over 112 million deaths of africans, but you will never hear this because the truth is not what this is all about.

    32. vbchmum on January 22nd, 2009 10:46 am

ugh-I wish people would stop with the black/white race card. It’s been overplayed, Reverend. Give it a rest already.
Most of the people living today are not responsible for what happened yrs. ago. We KNOW it happened, we’re sorry it happened, now move the frig on.

    33. BUN on January 22nd, 2009 1:26 pm

      I white, I don’t fight, I do right!!! Why beat the proverbial “dead horse”, Rev??? I thought we were all about acceptance and color blindness and change for the better;
your brain’s stuck somewhere until you repent, open up and show love for all people!!!! Amen..

    34. yoyo muffintop on January 22nd, 2009 2:17 pm

#31 – Trouble with math dave?
“the civil rights movement was in the 60’s. this is 2009. people today had nothing to do with whatever happened to lowery.”

Aprox 47,000,000 people that live today were 20+ years old in the early 60′s. 47 million.

#31 & #32 – What percentage of the 47 million people living today do you think were raised believing black skinned people were sub-human?

Hilarious when racists such as “super dave” try to justify slavery by saying everyone is guilty.

American slavery led to centuries of racism, discrimination and segregation in the United States.

When you pull you head out of the sand keep your white hood in it. It’d be much appreciated.

    35. Ninjaku on January 22nd, 2009 6:02 pm

I will agree that a good deal of blacks that I have met do pull out the race card. Whites are fearful of being labeled as a racist and blacks use this to their advantage.

Huh, funny how both blacks and whites still call me “Chinky eyes” and not be deemed one. That most certainly isn’t racist at ALL. Neither is “Chinawoman” or “yellow kid.” HMMMM

    36. super dave on February 16th, 2009 3:04 pm

yoyo: no trouble here. i have no need to embrace the right . my hood is red , white, and blue unlike yours.
shouldn’t you be dancing on a pole somewhere in the hood ?
