Traveling to Aruba: Public Health Service, Risk of Being Infected with Dengue Virus Still High

Traveling to Aruba? Wonder if the travel brochures, travel agents or travel web Denguesites sold you about this?

Aruba has currently three of the four variations of dengue.  There are up till now no reports of persons with the dangerous variation of hemorrhage dengue.  The Public Health Service remains extra alert, especially due to all the air traffic during the holidays.

Dengue still high-risk

ORANJESTAD – The risk being infected with the dengue virus is still high, reports the Public Health Service.  The lab tests also indicate this.  The service appeals to the community to remain alert on the breeding places of the dengue mosquito.  The eggs of the insect can stay alive for one year and can withstand the dry season.  Every rain shower increases their chances to survive.

The Yellow Fever and Mosquito Control (Gele Koorts en Muskieten Bestrijding, GKMB) is these days checking for the presence of breeding places as much as possible.  They go door-to-door to do this and take actions if necessary.  Occupants will first get a warning when GKMB finds too many risky places.  People that do not want to cooperate can get fined.  This happens more and more, reports the service.  Despite the visits, the GKMB cannot manage to tackle all the possible breeding places in the country.  They therefore emphasize that each occupant has the responsibility to constantly check their homes and yards for possible breeding places.

Aruba has currently three of the four variations of dengue.  There are up till now no reports of persons with the dangerous variation of haemorrhage dengue.  The Public Health Service remains extra alert, especially due to all the air traffic during the holidays.  The risk is very high that the fourth variation is imported. (Amigoe, 1/17/2008

This is a very serious threat which is kept under wraps. November and December were extremely rainy months which added to the risk. On the local ATV news which is in Papiamento they will have “Dengue Alerts.” It was so sad about the lady in Aruba who had won the battle with leukemia only to die from dengue. She had been a friend of someone I knew.

It;s not high! In venezuela it is high plenty of peoples died of degue in venezuela! Hey i saw something in the newspaper of Aruba.. that 2 people of “Guiding Light” Dan Young & Kelly Castillo and they said that Natalee was abused home and Natalee steph father is father of her “BABY”!

SM: Aruba must be getting worried either about Joran and his wine incident OR that the ocean search will indeed find Natalee’s body. For Aruba to allow these to psychics to go on TV yesterday with old news that was reported in Aruban papers back in April 2006 is very telling. This may be the final nail in Aruba’s tourism coffin. On ARUBA?

What does this mean, they don’t get drunk or high on cocaine while on “duty”?

Here’s another case in the Caribbean:

Conn. man missing while on vacation in British Virgin Islands
      Jan 16, 2008 @ 12:57 PM
      AP
      Hartford, Conn. –
A Connecticut man was reported missing while vacationing in the British Virgin Islands, police said.

Benjamin Wu, 29, of Middletown was last seen Saturday walking along Long Bay Beach in Tortola, police said.

There was no indication of foul play, said Jim Sandler, a Hartford lawyer and friend. He said the concern was Wu might have fallen into the water while climbing or hiking. Wu was a fearless hiker but could not swim, friends said.

Wu was due to leave Monday. Police said they have worked with British Virgin Island Customs and the U.S. Coast Guard to conduct an extensive search in the Long Bay and surrounding areas.

Wu books bands for the Webster Theatre, a small concert venue in Hartford, and was staying with other theater employees at the home of Justine Robertson, who owns the Webster.

“We’ve spent every waking minute, every waking second with this,” Robertson said

BTW, I think it was last week that I posted, on one of these threads, an article about human trafficking in Canada. Young foreign women had been brought in, only to be forced into prostitution, and the article said a “dizzying” number of countries were somehow involved.

Here’s an update: the number of persons arrested has risen to seven, including at least one woman.

Of course, nothing like this could happen in Aruba.

Two more arrested in human trafficking probe
Updated Thu. Jan. 17 2008 11:51 AM ET

      The Canadian Press

TORONTO — Toronto police have arrested and charged two more suspects as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged human trafficking ring.

Alexander Vinokurov, 44, and Vadim Kostin, 52, each face three charges related to human trafficking and prostitution and are to appear in court today.

The alleged operation was brought to light last week after a young eastern European women told Toronto police she was being used as a sex slave.

Since then, another victim has come forward, and at least four people were arrested in a series of raids last Friday.

Three Toronto-area men in their 30s — Andrei Khazarov, Daniel Leshinsky and Artur Tomchin along with Tomchin’s wife, Volha Venar — face several charges related to human trafficking and prostitution.

The victims say their alleged captors lured them away from their home countries with the promise they would become models.

One more article … Amsterdam sex club to close, apparently tied in with criminal elements.

Again, this couldn’t happen on Aruba.

Famous Amsterdam sex club threatened with closure Thu Jan 17, 9:56 AM ET

AMSTERDAM (Reuters Life!) – Amsterdam’s Casa Rosso theatre, one of the most famous landmarks of the “red light” district, has become the latest sex club to be threatened with closure as part of a drive to stamp out criminal activity.

Amsterdam’s city council intends to withdraw Casa Rosso’s license, Dutch news agency ANP reported on Thursday, just weeks after it forced the Yab Yum brothel, another famous sex industry stalwart, to close.

In December, the council announced plans to clean up Amsterdam’s historic red light district which draws thousands of tourists by fighting human trafficking, money laundering and drug abuse.

The city wants to stamp out forced prostitution by clamping down on pimps and demanding that brothel owners and escort agencies apply for permits.

It has withdrawn permits from dozens of sex businesses it accuses of links with organized crime.

Casa Rosso was unavailable for comment.

    13. Terri on January 17th, 2008 4:22 pm

Richard – A lot of your ideas make sense, as far as sex slavery, something big, no one talking as if there is a price to pay for running your mouth. However, if I were put in that position, I would rather be dead. Especially if it were to have gone on for almost 3 years. I would think that the only way to keep someone captive, you would have to drug them fairly heavily. What kind of quality of life would that be? I do hope that you are wrong. You make a good argument for the cause, though. I kind of think that if it were drug lords, mafia, etc, that Joran and family would lay really, really low as to not create any attention to themselves. If seems that he does just the opposite. I wonder what happens in other parts of the world if a body is found? or skeletal remains. Is there reconstruction as there is here in the states? do countries inform one another of such a find? And I also wonder if anyone knows what Paulus actually was doing at his bank so early in the morning… was he depositing or withdrawing? So many unanswered questions.

    14. Richard on January 17th, 2008 5:06 pm

Terri … Remember the case of Elizabeth Smart, here in the U.S. Ditto for Shawn Hornbeck, held captive for five years. During those five years, he and his captor were frequently seen out in public; nobody ever raised questions.

And remember Amy Bradley, kidnapped from the cruise ship in Curacao in 1998, one night after it docked in Aruba and crew members wanted to take her to Carlos ‘n’ Charlies.

If Natalee were indeed taken off Aruba, her choices would be simple: do as you’re told, or be killed. Not only her life would be at risk; her captors would know who her parents were, and where they could be found. This same pattern has prevailed time and again in human trafficking cases.

The photos that were shown on the Dr. Phil show have been examined by experts, and the consensus seems to be that they are indeed of Amy Bradley.

How much abuse can one take before one abandons hope? I don’t know … but forcible drug addiction would make someone more pliant.

By the way, some more people in Colombia who have been held captive for years are being released by the FARC … they report that there are hundreds more captives. Nobody intervened to help them.

Nobody, probably, would intervene to help Natalee if she were held by a drug lord under close watch.

    15. Richard on January 17th, 2008 5:07 pm

It’s also possible that with both Natalee and Amy, there might at this point be a child to consider. That would give her captors another hold.

      Beth Twitty has been informed.

Natalee might even be in Aruba on top of the hill at one of the closely guarded drug lords homes. Maybe that’s why no one will talk, they are too close to the situation. I don’t know. Just a speculation. But where ever she is, we know it isn’t where she wants to be.

Found another article and a picture of missing women in St Maarten. Leta Lynn Cordes, she has long blonde curly hair and very, very busty.

After dinner they returned to their home and Leta decided to go gambling. She walked to the casino located in the Westin Hotel which is about 1/4 mile. Video tapes were checked and she was in the casino but hasn’t been seen for 6 days since.

Two countries own the island. One side by the Dutch and the other by the French. Leta disappeared on the Dutch side of the island.

Update from the Persistence….a call came in on the radio from Aruban port authorities requesting help for a sailboat in distress carrying 6 people. The Persistence headed in the direction given, only to receive another call giving a different direction, apparently the sailboat called the Michelle was not only adrift but lost. Arubans then called the Persistence off the search. The crew felt disappointment because Michelle is still out there in danger.

      21. I hope that was not a run around by the Arubans, to distract the search for Natalee.

    23. Public Health Danger: Aruba has New Species of Mosquito More Dangerous than One Infected with Dengue. | Scared Monkeys on December 5th, 2008 2:33 pm

[...] One Dengue Island. According to MPA party leader Monica Kock and as reported in Amigoe, there is a new species of mosquito on Aruba that is more dangerous than the mosquitoes infected with dengue. Aruba is supposed to be inspected twice every year (PAHO advises four times) for possible dengue breakout places; however, “The Public Health Department has already expressed its concern and Minister Wever has admitted that the government does not comply with these international standards. One wonders whether that is listed in the travel guide of things to be aware of when planning a vacation? Individuals not only have to be wary of predators at dance clubs that prey on tourists, but must also be cautious of the “dengue”. [...]
