Ontario Canada Tourist, Adam DePrisco’s Death in Mexico Questioned … Hit & Run or Beating?

The death of Adam De Prisco from Ontario Canada in Acapulco Mexico is being questioned by his Adam_depriscoparents. Adam DePrisco died in a Mexican hospital last Monday night after being reportedly struck by a car in a “hit & run”. The family thinks otherwise.  Is this another situation in Canada similar to the Ianiero case? Is this yet another cover up of a North American tourist? This grieving family deserves answers.

The family initially believed he was hit by a car, but now believe he was beaten after speaking to DePrisco’s traveling companion, Marco Calabro.

However, DePrisco’s family think there is a cover up. Sound familiar? Also, the family claims that their son was beaten to death after dancing with a local man’s girlfriend in an Acapulco night club.

Mexican authorities say DePrisco was struck by a car after leaving a nightclub but the family believes he was beaten after dancing with a local man’s girlfriend.

Overwhelmed with grief, DePrisco’s mother Carm and father Benny, have been staying with relatives, unable to return to a home filled with pictures and memories of their son. They have made dozens of phone calls to Mexican and Canadian authorities, but still don’t believe their son’s death is getting the attention it deserves. “I want these guys found,” said DePrisco’s older brother Tony at his uncle’s home Tuesday. “It seems like everybody is trying to cover up what happened.” “There’s no clear indication as to what happened and it seems like no one wants to help us find answers,” said DePrisco’s aunt, Lucy Defilippis-Pannozzi.

Adam DePrisco’s family grieves as they look for answers and the truth

Adam DePrisco was supposedly dancing with a local woman at the Paladium nightclub when a man became upset. DePrisco was then thrown out of the dance club by a bouncer.  Adam DePrisco was found outside the club bleeding from his head.

A bouncer threw DePrisco from the bar, the family believes. When Calabro went looking for him, he found his friend on the ground outside the club, bleeding from his head, said Tony DePrisco.

Police in Acapulco said DePrisco’s injuries were typical for someone struck by a car. But the family suspects he would have suffered more than head injuries if hit by a car. (Canada.com)

Mysterious death of Canadian in Mexico leaves family desperate for answers

The conflicting accounts of how the Woodbridge, Ont., man died, and the yet unsolved murders of fellow Woodbridge residents Domenic and Nancy Ianiero in Cancun last February, have left DePrisco’s parents fearful that the truth will never be known.

Pannozzi said they’re calling on Ottawa to play a role.

“We don’t need to have this keep happening, people need to know that Mexico is unsafe,” said the 23-year old. “What my family is trying to do is get that message out… they do believe the Canadian government has a role.”    The head injuries DePrisco sustained were so severe that his best friend and travel companion, Marco Calabro, didn’t immediately recognize him, said Pannozzi.

Calabro, thinking that the body he saw lying in a pool of blood outside the club was not his friend’s, frantically ran back to the hotel in search of DePrisco. (Winnipeg Free Press)

UPDATE I: De Prisco’s Room Robbed Before He Died

The story gets even more puzzling as the room that Adam De Prisco was staying in was robbed before he died. This is a PR nightmare for Mexico as they own this family answers. They owe us all answers.

But now the Woodbridge teen has to deal with the fact that while Adam De Prisco lay dying in a Mexican hospital, someone was ransacking the boys’ hotel room.

“They took the camcorder off me,” he laments. “The last memories I have of Adam.”

He believes the thieves also tried to break into the safe and take the duo’s passports.

It was another shock to the young man who has already had to process so much in so short a time. (City News)

What are they hiding?

The family has demanded the hotel show them the security video taken that night, but officials with the resort have so far refused.

UPDATE II: Family Awaiting Further Tests After Autopsy On Adam De Prisco

The agonizing wait for answers in the death of 19-year-old Adam De Prisco will continue for a few more weeks for his grieving family. De Prisco’s uncle, Sandro Bellio, confirmed Sunday that the Ontario Coroner’s preliminary findings suggest the teen was killed by a car. The family insists he was beaten to death outside the Acapulco nightclub he attended a week ago. (City News)

UPDATE III: Canadian Government Gets Involved In De Prisco Case

UPDATE IV: De Prisco Family Readies For Funeral While Disputing Autopsy Findings

What began as vocal disdain and distrust of the Mexican government has now snowballed into a growing frustration with Canadian politicians for Carmen De Prisco, whose son Adam was killed in Mexico under suspicious circumstances. “I hate being a Canadian because I haven’t seen nobody from the government doing anything at all. They don’t care,” the grieving mother vented.  Despite a Canadian coroner’s report that corroborated Mexican claims that the teen was killed after being struck by a car, the family maintains he was beaten to death after dancing with a local man’s girlfriend at a popular nightclub. They are not wavering from their stance that Adam was murdered, but say they want to focus on planning a funeral and grieving their loss. (City News)

Once upon a time Mexico had a saying:

Mexico – so far from God, so close to the United States

move up the clock to 2007, it may very well now read:

Mexico – so far from God, so close to Aruba.

Well, just on the Canadian news…. while th kid was inhe hospital… his hotel room was robbed.
      Interesting..

      Kat
Sounds like the same clean up crew from Aruba.

#2, Kat, how horrible. Prayers for Adam and his family.
Staying stateside is looking better and better. Hey, if we’re going to deploy 20K+ troops to Iraq I’d say OUR economy needs the income.

All of the vacation spots are the same. If something happens to a tourist they cover it up so it will NOT hurt tourism. Bottom line is the MONEY.

    6. LilPuma on January 11th, 2007 6:44 pm

#5 Big Lou. That’s the reason for boycotting Aruba and any other place that does this. I also heard that some areas in Mexico, including tourist destinations, are getting travel advisories from the U.S. State Dept. because drug wars are getting more violent. The local newspaper had an article that included stories of beheadings by drug dealers even in Acapulco. I’ve been to Mexico so many times and loved it and found the people to be as warm as the sun and sand, but that was more than 10 years ago. Sad that things have gotten so bad. The good news is that the US and Canada have so many beautiful places to vacation.

Kat_Gram, please keep us informed and let us know what we can do.

i think no one from canada should ever traveil to mexico ever again

    9. Big Lou on January 12th, 2007 11:21 am

LilPuma: I agree. We should botcott Aruba, Mexico,Cruises and all places that are considered dangerous.

We can’t travel to other countries safely but they can enter our countries safely and even get government assistance for their families….something is not right about this picture. Hey Americans stay in the United States til you have visited every wonders in our country to see we have to offer. That should keep everyone busy for a lifetime.

    11. glad2bAmerican on January 12th, 2007 11:36 am

upon a trip to Cozemel Mexico ONE street off the main tourist street were military men with rifles patroling.
I got back on the main street and haven’t been back to Mexico since….and that was right down the street from Carlos & Charlies. I’m happy in America! No adventures in other countries for me anymore….that includes Aruba!!

    12. NOT AS STUPID AS YOU THINK on January 12th, 2007 1:03 pm

There have been so many warnings about going to Mexico.

Several years ago, my aunt who had been widowed a few years and being of good health, had been taking advantage of senior traveling.

Finally, she planned on a trip to Mexico. It was supposed to be perfectly safe — a bus trip of a bunch of seniors from a mid-western state to visit a religious branch office. Everything was set up and as she told my Mom — all contigencies have been covered and we have been assured that it is safe and we have been invited.

My Mom, who lives in California, called and argued and begged her not to take the trip. My Mom told her that there had been a Travel Advisory issued by the Govenor of California to not travel to the interior of Mexico and especially not certain groups. My Aunt insisted that that didn’t apply, as they had been “invited”.

Well, she made her trip, returned and wouldn’t talk about the trip. Finally, I got out of her that, even though the group made it back safely home, it was not the trip they had expected. First they were robbed by bandit groups several times on the road, both coming and going. Also, the supposed “invitation to visit the branch office” was non-existent and this group was meet with “what are you doing traveling down here”? They were “encouraged” to stay inside the buildings the week they were there and it wasn’t a pleasant trip at all!

This was as much as my Aunt would tell me — (she has always been an up-beat person who expresses the good in everything.) But after that trip she stopped traveling, doesn’t talk on the phone any longer and just sort of aged. I have no idea what really happenned… but I do know it was related to this trip to Mexico!

    13. NOT AS STUPID AS YOU THINK on January 12th, 2007 1:12 pm

By the way, the state my aunt lived in and traveled from was Minnesota — which borders Canada.

    14. Richard on January 12th, 2007 1:20 pm

The family have, in fact, urged a Canadian boycott of Mexico (almost typed Aruba; wishful thinking). An article today said that undisclosed sources in Acapulco confirmed that their son was beaten by people in and out of the hall.

The Canadian response to the boycott call, at least the official response, was something such as one incident is not grounds for a tourist advisory. I would hate to think that the government would use the word “incident,” but that sticks in my mind.

Now if it were the son or daughter of someone in politics … oops, sorry, that might sound cynical.

    15. Angela on January 12th, 2007 3:55 pm

Kat i thot ur comment sayin “sounds like the same clean up crew from Aruba” was very well said. and its sadly true. i think it is disgusting how Canadians, for some reason cannot travel on vacation without being in danger. when i heard about Adam’s death i was greatly disturbed and upset that such a handsome, young and innocent man, no, teenager, had to suffer for the immature, violent and mentally disturbed actions of the locals of Mexico. i only have the greatest regrets for Adams death and i hope whoeverr did this to him will have to suffer as greatly as that poor boy did, if possible, more! for some odd reason, being a fellow citizen of ontario i just felt like i had to comment on this issue because i felt like i share a bond or some kind of closeness with adam and his family. so…The only advice i can give on this topic is DO NOT go to mexico, not with friends, not with family, and definately not alone. i am absolutely disgusted by this incident, and crime and i hope it will never again happen to one of our fellow canadians*(or americans)god bless the De Prisco family and i give only my best wishes to the investigation on this horrific crime.

    16. LilPuma on January 12th, 2007 5:40 pm

I didn’t mention in my last post that many of the people I met vacationing in Mexico were from Canada. I’m sure the basis of their tourism economy is mostly American and Canadian. They care about tourism, not tourists. We need to be mad as hell and not willing to take it anymore. Let’s just hope the perpetrators aren’t heading for Texas right now.

    17. LilPuma on January 12th, 2007 6:32 pm

Excerpt from the US State Dept.’s website:

      September 15, 2006

This Public Announcement alerts U.S. citizens to the rising level of brutal violence in areas of Mexico. This violence has occurred throughout Mexico, but has been particularly persistent in the city of Nuevo Laredo within the state of Tamaulipas. This Public Announcement expires on March 15, 2007.

U.S. citizens residing and traveling in Mexico should exercise extreme caution when in unfamiliar areas and be aware of their surroundings at all times. Public sources suggest that narcotics-related violence has claimed 1,500 lives in Mexico this year. In recent months there have been execution-style murders of Mexican and U.S. citizens in Tamaulipas (particularly Nuevo Laredo), Michoacan, Baja California, Guerrero, and other states.

U.S. citizens have also been victims of random shootings on major highways outside of Mexico City, Nuevo Laredo, Tijuana, and other areas throughout Mexico. In recent years, dozens of U.S. citizens have been kidnapped in Nuevo Laredo, with more than two dozen cases still unresolved; recent incidents indicate a possible resurgence of kidnappings for ransom. Mexican police and other government figures have been murdered in Guerrero, Nuevo Leon, the Federal District, Tamaulipas, and other states. Drug cartel members have been known to follow and harass U.S. citizens traveling in their vehicles, particularly in border areas including Nuevo Laredo and Matamoros.

I live in Woodbridge, where Adam lived. I am so sick to my stomach about this. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I wish there was something I could do to help……….. I will not be travelling to Mexico and I urge all Canadians and Americans to do the same.
His body has arrived in Canada today and an autopsy will be performed……lets hope this can be solved so the family can have some peace. Anyone interested can also sign a petition for a travel advisory to Mexico at http://www.mexicoinjustice.ca

mexcians come to our land and get welfare, and treated like gold…tourists go to their land and get murdered, and robbed..

boycott, is a word that some view as negative, not sure i agree with boycotts…however, why then do they hose down their pavement, and make certain no crime evidence was left…no need of it…the crime scene is not secured with a yellow tape is it?……therefore travel all you want to these places, just remember if anything happens to you, your loved ones, or one of your very own country men will be framed..

why did the rcmp pull out?……what is that all about?
can dana pretzer at let us know on that?….can’t dana take this on his show?…..someone should be lending this family as much as natalee holloway family? what about it dana pretzer? this is your own people….broadcast this man, see what you cand do.

it is sooo true that mexicans come to canada or the U.S. and expect everything and all the benefits they can get just for being refugees/immigrants. i still cant put into words how digusted i am by adams death and the fact that mexican authorities are injust, dishonest and obviously hiding soemthing, if like the comment above says, they dont mark crime scenes and hose down the pavement. there is soemthing not being told and i can only stresss enough through this site NOT to go to mexico under any circumstances..this is for americans and canadians.. because we are their target-we are the victims of hit and runs, random shootinggs and execution-murderss. i wish only the best of luck to the Deprisco family and that Adam’s autopsy goes very wel so that he cann rest in peace. Even if they do not share the cause of their sons death, i hope that north america will be told of the criminal, and murderer to this crime, when he/she/they are caught so that we can feel at least a little more safe when we must travel.

    21. guest on January 13th, 2007 11:29 pm

well you read the articles, his travel companion who ran outside to find him, listen to him speak..said the minute they lifetd adams body into an ambulance, the water truck was immediately hosing down the area…washing away the blood..there was lots of blood…his hotel room got robbed…the mexican government would not let him view the tape of the camera that led to his room….they took his camcorder, and amera…marco his best friend says…need links please google them…and read…plus you can watch live interviews…its beyond unvbelieveable.

they hosed it all down, no crime scene yellow tape…business as usual…you have to see the place to se the place…the disco is on a hill, they rolled him down to the highway where its traffic…but he has no marks on his body of a car hiting him…

why their rcmp which is the equivalent of the fbi, pulled out off the case.. that is what is baffling?

the couple that was murdered from the same town they accused 2 teachers, 2 innocent mothers back in canada of the couples murder…dollars is what they want, and nothing else…you are on your own, when you venture to these places…sad sad..maybe dana will broadcast this. people need to know.

Another sad tragic death of a young person..

Having managed a deluxe hotel in Acapulco for a couple of years, I was always amazed by the hords of young visitors whose only mission was to get drunk or drugged and the parents back home were convinced of their well behaved and innocent kids, until we would send them proof in form of photos and police reports..

I have known the club, Palladium and the owner who runs the place for almost two decades….they are running a tight show there and they surely kick out those who dont behave, but noone gets beaten to death for dancing with someone elses ´girl….GET REAL…

This story stinks and Adams friend should be questioned again…he knows more than he is admits…

I might be wrong but I thought they have cameras inside the club and maybe some at the entrance…

And for all those hypocrites asking for a boycott, I suggest you first clean up the mess in your own place, where besides all the other global mess your country has created you are not even able to get basic safety in your school back yards …

Again, NOTHING justifies the killing of ANYONE…

    25. guest on January 14th, 2007 2:09 pm

severe trauma to his head and neck from an unknown cause.

what is the name of them owners…what was that club called before the palladium…..the family who owns it is a big family in mexico isn’t it?

    26. canadiangirl on January 16th, 2007 12:27 am

2 years ago I worked in Acapulco for 2 months with a spring break tour company, during my two months i acutally worked at Pallidium and yes the owners were very nice, but i can not say the same for the doorstaff. THe company i worked with organizes spring break tours for college students. Our company rents out the local bars for certain nights of the week, each week, and during those nights WE are in charge of who enters the bar. NO LOCALS were every allowed in. We had staff maning the front doors (along with some very unpleasant Pallidium staff)unless you were on tour with us you weren’t allowed in. HOwever there were nights we had to fight the door men for allowing locals in after our policy said no. At another bar, which is located on the beach (disco beach) locals snuck in and let me tell you that the two young ladies i seen them with were not in good form, with illicit drugs like roofies available over the counter its no wonder we weren’t allowing outsiders into our bar nights. FOrchantly i seen these two young ladies unable to stand let alone walk as the men were trying to carry them out, i stopped them, got assistance from more of my staff and we escourted the girls back to their hotel room WITHOUT the locals.. now imagine someone like that being on vaca without the help of a tour group ??? Oh wait.. Adam DePrisco was alone and look what happened to him.
Palldium is located on a hill, a very steep hill with parking on the top and one level down. At the bottum of the hill is a very busy highway and on a busy night there are many cabs lined up waiting for patrons. I find it very hard to believe that no one witnessed Adam being hit by a car, if such a thing happened, which unforchantly i also do not believe. I seen travellers who weren’t with our company approach us b/c they were being robbed every night on their way home to their hotel (which was a dark stones throw away from the main street) by police, POLICE!! and for those of you whom have not been to Acapulco let me tell you the Police there travel in the backs of truck with loaded rifles down the main street every hour. So those are not men you want to mess with. THese students were scared for their lives.. its not fair!!
During my stay in Acapulco the company i worked for likely brought through 10,000 students and there are other companies like them who do the same things AND all of these companies have locations all over Mexico. Imagine the money that brings in ? 10,000 people eating, shopping, drinking, thats a lot of revenue and thats only at one location, that doesn’t include Cancun, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, and Mazatlan just to name a few more locations this company brings 1000′s of tourists.
It’s so sad to see people being treated this way. I feel for this family and their loss. It’s sad way to loose anyone. It’s easy to say boycott Mexico but what we need to do more then that is to Educate ppl on their safety and what does go on their. I read in one the articles that 28 Canadians have died in Mexico since 1994, that more then 2/year on average and that does NOT included our close neighbour USA. Imagine how many more of them travel to this country yearly ??? Its a sad sad thing to think about.

My advice is to tell a friend.. so they can tell a friend.. Had i known the death rate for travelling in Mexico i would not have went 2 years ago.. i didn’t know.. I was 21.. all i seen was Spring Break!! Sun and Fun.. Well too bad that wasn’t the case for young Adam.

    27. Stev on January 16th, 2007 11:16 am

The owners are the Rullan family, and the place was called Enigma in those days…

    28. canadiangirl on January 16th, 2007 4:42 pm

No it was called Palladium when i was there. The same owners as at Mandara.

    29. Tatiana on January 17th, 2007 1:18 pm

I think it’s so sad – no one should travel to Mexico – stop the tourism and see what that country will do in 2 years…we should all stand together and stop bringing in revenue to countries that care more amount their tourism than the people who bring the money into their economy …see how they survive then…one season without Tourism in Acapulco that city would be done…I feel so sad for that family in Woodbridge and for the other family who lost their parents, this just all re-hashes their pain…Canada needs to send a message to their 3rd world countries once and for all!!

    30. Scared Monkeys on January 17th, 2007 7:31 pm

So there is an argument between Mexico and family as to how the boy was tragically killed. So if Mexican athorities are saying it was a hit & run, where is that investigation?

All to often these places that make a living on tourism just cover everything up, at all cost.

      Red

    31. guest on January 17th, 2007 8:39 pm

there was, there is not an investigation going on…how can you investigate a scene of a hit and run, if the crime scene is not secured…

how do you investigate, when you call a water truck to hose the crime of the scene down, rather than securing it with a yellow ribbon…

how do you investigate when his hotel room is robbed, as he lays in a hospital dying…the hotel will not show his friend the tape….because the staff of the hotel robbed them, most likely..

how does a tourist survive, especially in this case, they are 2 friends 19 years old…they are not there with wads of money…the hospital wanted $1,000.00 or more before they did anything…the boy his friend did not have that…so tourists beware…the mexicans get treated to welfare, and medical assistance..

whatever the canadiangirl said above is truth…no lies…
the door staff always works in cohoots with the locals…as do waiters, and dj’s….its one band of banditos…travel industry needs to stop promoting this scum place…stop the flights just for one week…let them feel the heat of their sun, as they graze through their barren maze fields..

    32. guest on January 18th, 2007 12:14 am

first of all if he had wanted a taxi….he would not go down on the road to get one…there is taxis outside the club….

second of all any bouncer ejecting him out of the club, would have settled the dispute outside…thats mexico for you…very easily done, and they are vicious…try to dispute that now…if they are people who are conscious they will present the tape to the authorities…cover cover cover up…..smells cover up…smells of a cover up all the way…

I sent a letter to The Toronto Star,,,but my letters are never published,,,,My heart goes out to the DePrisco family. This is definitely a setup, and when tourists arrive in Mexico, they are tailed and followed. Its a well known fact about the corruption and cover-ups there,,,especially with the police and the politicians, the biggest crooks and liars. If everyone stopped going there it would bring the whole place down, because its poor to start with and they need the tourist money. I also think that when tourists go there,,they should be warned by Canadian and U.S. governments that they can expect no help if something like this happens. Our governments don’t want to get involved, unless it was one of their
own Cabinet Ministers or officials. There are much nicer places to go to. Someone should start a petition and send it to the Canadian government. I say,,,,stay the HELL away from there. The Mexican police force is the lowest scum. Adam DePrisco was probably beaten up so badly and then possibly someone ran over him just to make it look like a hit and run.,But why did they do an autopsy and embalm him there? Definitely they have done some things to his body to make it look like he was drunk and just walked in front of a car….BULLSHIT

just heard on the news there was another “hit and run” in Mexico. A couple were out walking,,,,I believe it was the man who was killed and his wife is in hospital there. They were an elderly couple from Ontario, Canada. Seems to be a pretty ongoing thing there “hit and run”.

    43. guest on January 20th, 2007 6:59 pm

the country is a hit and run in itself…god help anyone that finds themselves needing medical attention there…

they will leave you on the side of the road dying if you don’t have anyone to guarantee payment for a doctor to look at you.

several people tried to warn others on these travel boards, to read what the government has as a warning do not travel to mexico…they were banned…its there, just that very few of our people read that…everyone thinks they are invincible and nothing will happen…and i love the ones that say so what that can happen anywhere, it can happen in your own city…what are you going to do lock yourself up and not venture outdoors?….

i hear what they are saying, but i’m not stressing don’t go, don’t this, and don’t that…i just say what your options are if anything happens to you…crime scenes are not investigated…you will not be transported to a medical facility, until you pay….and even if you have travel insurance the way that works is you pay first, they reimburse you at a later date…in other words think if you or your loved ones want that, why not choose a destination that if anything happens, at least your family will know what is happening…and things will not be investigated…

…My heart goes to the De Prisco’s family. Mexico is not safe! I beg you people wake up! Mexico is not safe heaven anymore. I do want to mention one thing? if Mexican’s belive that this was a hit and run accident, then way do the autopsy in Mexico? I belive Marco, adam’s friend and travelling companion. The body was tampered with. Mexico makes me sick and will do everything to make sure this horrific news goes out. Mia

It Amazes me to see how people comment here about how unsafe they think Mexico is.
      My question to those comments;
Have you even been to Mexico.
It’s easy to listen to one side of a media report and base your judgement on that.
What if a reporter in buffalo reported just on the Toronto murders?
Toronto would be looked at as UNSAFE”"
There are not witnesses to back up Adam’s friend so called story.
Come on! it’s a major tourist city at a major tourist bar.
You can not tell me that there was not one Canadian or American tourist down there that would not have seen the supposed beating outside the bar.
The friend’s story is so full of holes it’s not funny.
Why has this friend not been interviewed by reporters?
      The Uncle is no better.
He says there was now visible bruises below the neck.
The Canadian coroner confirmed bruises below the neck.
One last thing; Your child is lying in a hospital, “DYING,” and you send the aunt and uncle down?
      What is up with that?
The kid was not dead at the time the uncle was there.
The uncle had the money to get down there.
      Why didn’t the parents go?

      Bottom line facts:
      Adam was drunk!!
Adam was tossed out of the bar.
Adam could not afford a $6.00 cab fare back to the hotel.
Adam was seen uninjured waking down the street DRUNK.

How are is it to believe that he staggered out in from of a car and was hit?
Is it because it happened in Mexico?
If he died on the streets of Toronto, would people think toronto police and governemt were trying to cover up a simple hit and run ACCIDENT

      I’ve been to Acapulco!!
I’ve walked past all the bars on the main strip late at night!!
      No mugglings, beatings or murders.

If you have never been to Mexico, how can you say it’s unsafe?
That’s like someone reading about murders in Toronto and saying Toronto is unsafe but they have never been to Toronto.
Unless you have personal FACTS about how unsafe Mexico is, your comments are worthless.
over 100,000 Canadian tourists vacation in Mexico Every Year!!
Try going to the airport and asking those people how their vacation in Mexico was?
