Am in Aruba at the moment. According to a new book by Jan van Ness – 50% of the tourists to Aruba are time share owners. Those people are stuck. Aruba is so so commercialized – it use to be very nice.
I know…we should go back to how Aruba was…It used to be the one and only “one happy island”.

I am laughing but it is really sad. My mother moved to Holland when I was a baby and I have always thought that I was born in Holland and when I turned 6 years old, my mom decided that it was time to leave Holland and move back to Aruba. I was like Aruba?? I thought it was another city in Holland heheheh. I remember when i first saw Aruba, I was like my god, I can not believe that is this my island. So peaceful and quiet. It was so beautiful and everybody slept with their windows and doors open. It was amazing and I had a great time growning up on the island. Now I am back in Holland to study but as soon as I finish my school i will return to Aruba. Aruba is a great place but they have changed it alot, more hotels, casino’s, bars, it’s so sad to see that the donkeys have no other places to go and no i’m not talking about J2K. Crimes have gone up and if we continue like this we are going to become like the countries in South America. And Aruba really needs to start telling their visitors the truth. They should announce that even tho our crime rate is low that does not mean that we don’t have crazy people living among us. So they need to stop the ” Safe island”, “no crime thing”. Cuz that place don’t exist on this planet, well not any longer.

caroline, No time share owners are NOT STUCK THERE !! They can trade and go anywhere else in the WORLD. They prefer to go to Aruba. Thousands every month go. I DON’T GET IT !! They know it is dangerous but still go there instead of going someplace else for the SAME price !!

I receive RCI certificates because the company I am affiliated with is owned by the same company that run RCI.
These certificates give me free weeks at a resort of my choosing. Right now, I could choose among about 10 Aruba….ummm…excuse me….10 Dutch Antilles resorts to spend my free week at. If I wanted to go to Cancun…my choices are limited…Puerto Vallarta….more limited.
You see, if Americans are going, they most likely are getting free timeshares. But I don’t think as many are going as you imply. I think aruba is “puffing” their tourism numbers to make them look much much more than they actually are.
No one wants to go to Aruba….unless its free. md

This is strange in that the other night(?) I posted in the cage what hit me about about Natalee wanting to see “sharks”
Long story made short…
If Natalee thought she was headed back to her hotel (with someone she thought was staying there) what better way to prolong the trip than to suggest that they go see “Sharks at Night”.
IF SHE had requested or even if it was suggested to her before seeing the MB gang at the bus stop(?) I would have to think that she would have said something about going to see SHARKS to the MB gang.
One of the K’s even stated that Natalee asked to go to the North shore to see the sharks!
How would she know that? Even if it was possible (which I doubt 99.99999999 %)

I agree with you on the time shares. It was caroloine who said the ONLY people going to Aruba had time shares and they were stuck with them. They are NOT. They could trade them and go to Las Vegas, Florida, or Michigan. They prefer to go to Aruba. I don’t get it !!!

Just saw Beth’s interview with Greta. Beth is so well spoken, composed and determined to get answers. She has so much class, more so than the V’s and K’s. I loved what she said about Karin Janssen. Beth is right. The prosceutor doesn’t seem to know who she is supposed to defend. She is supposed to defend Natalee, so that means that she is supposed to communicate with Natalee’s family and/or attorney(s). From day one!!

The Aruban Tourist Authority needs to confront Karin Janssen and ask her why hasn’t she pressed charges against the 3. She said she didn’t need a body to press charges. #29, the aruba timeshare owners have to be able to find someone willing to swap with them. i would imagine that would be kind of hard to do right now, unless there are timeshare owners in the shadow of a smoking volcano, or maybe in the path of a tsunami. selling the things right now wouldn’t be easy either, since somebody dumb enough to pay for them has to be found.

Most of us love our place of birth even with its flaws, but we demand that our law enforcement agencies and politicians do their jobs without impunity, or we kick them out. And, if the offenses are so agresious we will put them in jail to boot.
I’ve had an open line of communication with several prominent citizens of Aruba and even they say it is not the place they once loved. An influx of illegals along with the illicit drugs they bring breeds corruption and destroys the once benign, cheerful ambience of the island.
If you love your island, then it is your duty to rally its citizenry and demand that changes be made. A good start would be to insist that the Natalee Holloway case be solved and that EVERONE involved in the crime or the cover-up be brought to justice!
Counter to some of the misguided jargon floating around the internet, we “freaking” Americans would do the same for you if one of your children were lost in this country.

It was mentioned above that, as one rumor has it, the Terrible Trio (and of course PvdS) might be petitioning the court to remove them as suspects, and to declare the case closed.
Some time ago, there was talk on this forum about taking out an ad in newspapers, etc. I think that if something such as this does occur (and my understanding is, by next May Aruba MUST declare it a cold case if it remains unsolved), that would be the time to unleash a campaign that:
1. Reminds the public of Beth’s call for a boycott of all the Netherlands Antilles islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao), which was her original proposal, until answers are provided in Natalee’s case. (Remember, Amy Bradley vanished in 1998 while the cruise ship was docking at Curacao.)
2. Demands that our government send investigators to Aruba, and that at the VERY LEAST, unless they get effective cooperation, we declare a tourist advisory against Aruba. I believe that we have the right to do that by treaty, but realistically, if Aruba doesn’t cooperate, our chances of getting anywhere would be zilch.
Obviously, the family would have to lead in this effort. But if this point is reached, our work on their behalf would be important as never before.
In my view, which is not binding on anyone, blogging is fine … but if we do nothing else, how effective can it be? Let’s get ready to carry the campaign to the public.

In the beginning this was the case of a missing girl that failed to show up for her flight home from vacation. Because of her personal background, it became very obvious that foul play must have taken place to prevent her from returning to her hotel room.
This thing can and does happen frequently around the world. In the U.S. almost nightly we hear the tragic story of a missing person and all too often the horrendous end result is almost predictable.
What took place after it was discovered Natalee was missing is what sets the story apart from most others and makes it about a whole island nation.

I have never bought timeshares in anything and would not like to do so. And I am especially thankful that I have not done so in One Crappy Island. I am considering a condo at Gulf Shores, our own sugar-white natural (not man-made like FUaruba’s) but it will not be timeshared.
And I don’t believe it is nearly as easy to dump those Aruban timeshares as you say. Otherwise the price would not be plummeting and sales people having to get real jobs now.
FYI, I don’t consider a trip to the beach as “travel” if you go somewhere where there is nothing of historic value to see. It is a trip to the beach. Period and only that.
