West Coast: No To Hillary?

Robert Novak this morning has a column about the failure of the West Coast Liberal Establishment to embrace Hillary Clinton. To be honest, I think that if Hillary has the momentum, Hollywood will fall right into line. They will do anything to defeat the Republicans, and even if they are not thrilled with Hillary, they will back her to the hilt.

And when you think about it, the Democrats have no real bench strength anymore. They have been pulled further to the left that is reasonable, and thus moderates like Evan Bayh will not be able to get through the primaries without a huge shift to the left, which will destroy his credibility. So in my opinion, the nomination is Hillary’s to take.

An Excerpt from Novak:

Back east, well-placed Democrats have agreed that the party’s 2008 nomination is all wrapped up better than three years in advance. They say that the prize is Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s for the asking, and that she is sure to ask. But here on the left coast, I found surprising and substantial Democratic opposition to going with the former first lady.

Both the Hollywood glitterati and the more mundane politicians of Los Angeles are looking elsewhere. They have seen plenty of Sen. Clinton over the past dozen years, and they don’t particularly like what they’ve seen. Two far less well-known Democrats — Virginia Gov. Mark Warner and Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh — were hits on recent visits to California, mainly because they were not Hillary.

The concern here with Clinton is not borne in fear that she might fail to carry California. Almost any Democrat would be likely to win in the nation’s most populous state, where the advent of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is an exotic event that has not changed the GOP’s minority status in California. Rather, the fear here is pronounced that Clinton cannot win in Red America, guaranteeing a third straight Republican term in the White House.

Talking to some of them, I found concern that Hillary carries too much baggage from her turbulent marriage and her husband’s presidency to do any better than John Kerry did last year. One female office holder was looking hard for another Southern moderate who could bite into the Confederacy as Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton had done.

Another woman office holder was hostile to a Clinton candidacy on a more personal basis. “Don’t think that Hillary has the women’s vote,” she told me. “I will never forgive her for sticking with her husband after he humiliated her. It’s something I can’t get over.”

While all this sounds good, I think that when push comes to shove, these Californians will be waving the Hillary banner long and hard.

Natalee Holloway; 3 More People Arrested (Breaking News)

According to Fox News, The three “person’s of interest” then witnesses, have been arrested overnight in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.

Much of the discussion yesterday from many was how could the last people ever to see Natalee Holloway alive only be witnesses and not suspects. Even more so how could they not be arrested?

From Fox News

ORANJESTAD, Aruba — FOX News has learned that three more men have been arrested in Aruba in connection with the disappearance of American tourist Natalee Holloway (search) — the same three young men who were previously mentioned as possible witnesses in the case.

Carla Caccavale, a Holloway family spokesperson told FOX that Aruban authorities had informed them of the arrests.

One of the men, a Dutch citizen whose father is said to be a prominent official in the Aruban justice system, was apparently romantically involved with Holloway the night she disappeared.

On Wednesday, a judge ruled that authorities had enough evidence to hold two former security guards in connection with Holloway’s disappearance.

From the AP

Aruban police arrested three more suspects in the case of the missing American honors student Thursday, the attorney general said.

Attorney General Caren Janssen said police arrested three men that police had previously questioned and released in the disappearance of 18-year-old Natalee Holloway.

Authorities have described the three as students – two Surinamese and a native of the Netherlands – who told police they dropped off Holloway at her hotel around 2 a.m. on May 30. Hotel employees, however, say that security cameras did not record her return.

From one of our commentors: Pay Bas, explains the Dutch judicial system differs from the US system, and our interpretation of these arrests may be off base:

only work from this information, so I have to be careful. But this has to do with the dutch justice system. If you are considered a witness in this case you will be taken to a policestation to make a ‘proces verbaal’ a statement. If the police, after reading your statement do not trust you a ‘officier van justitie’, like a DA will be called. If the DA is conviced that you are in someway maybe guilty he can order your arrest for a maximum of three days. In those three days the police has to gather evidence that you had something to do with a crime. If more evidence is gathered or the police is still conviced that your are guilty that arrest can be lenghted by the DA.
However, if your statements do seem sound, and apperently in this case they were at first, the police has to let you go. Naturally you should make yourself aviable (how do spell that?) to the police.

From CNN:

ORANJESTAD, Aruba (CNN) — Three more suspects have been arrested in connection with the disappearance of an 18-year-old Alabama student in Aruba, bringing to five the number of men in custody, a prosecutor said Thursday.

The three men just arrested were the last people seen with Natalee Holloway as she left the Oranjestad nightclub Carlos ‘N Charlie’s about 1:30 a.m. May 30, according to the chief prosecutor.

Searches were under way of the suspects’ homes Thursday, the prosecutor said.

Update: 10:15 am - From the Birmingham News:

ORANJESTAD, Aruba (AP) — Aruban police arrested three men Thursday who admitted giving a ride to an Alabama teenager who has been missing for more than a week, the attorney general said.

The three men were previously questioned in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, 18, and described as “persons of interest.” They told police they dropped off Holloway, of Mountain Brook, Ala., at her hotel early May 30, but Holiday Inn employees say security cameras did not record her return.

Attorney General Caren Janssen said the three were arrested at 6 a.m. She refused to identify the three, but authorities previously have described them as students — two Surinamese and a native of the Netherlands.

The attorney general’s office had said previously the three were considered witnesses and not suspects.

Janssen refused to say whether the three were connected to two men previously detained in Holloway’s disappearance, saying more information would be released later Thursday. A judge ruled Wednesday that there was sufficient cause to keep holding the two former hotel security guards.

Dean Defends Deanism and Puts Other Foot in Mouth

After putting his foot in his mouth in San Francisco the other day by making more inflammatory comments toward Republicans. Howard Dean went on TV today and defended those same comments and put his other foot in his mouth as well. Dean defended his recent harsh criticism of Republicans, including his observation that they are “pretty much a white, Christian party.”

Howard Dean, the master of diversity has managed to pretty much annoy everyone lately including those in his own party. Howard Dean, the ex-Governor of VT in lily-white bread New England is supposed to be telling others about diversity? But when it comes to Dean and his mouth it just doesn’t stop running.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean on Wednesday defended his recent harsh criticism of Republicans, including his observation that they are “pretty much a white, Christian party.”

Dean noted that he, too, is a white Christian. But he said the GOP is too narrow in its scope and the Democratic Party is far more diverse.

While even prominent Democrats in recent days have distanced themselves from some of his comments, the outspoken Dean, appearing on NBC”s “Today” show, said criticism of him is meant by Republicans to divert attention from the country’s problems and make him the issue instead.

Does one ever wonder about the theory when one talks so much about another that they must really be describing themselves? Howard Dean calling others not friendly? Howard, have you heard yourself talk lately? If you have not, courtesy of Lilly & Vince via OTB comes many of Dean’s Hall of Deanisms. This must be seen and heard.

Dean told a forum of journalists and minority leaders Monday that Republicans are “not very friendly to different kinds of people, they are a pretty monolithic party … it’s pretty much a white, Christian party.”

Challenged on that during the NBC interview, Dean said “unfortunately, by and large it is. And they have the agenda of the conservative Christians.”

“This is a diversion from the issues that really matter: Social Security, and adequate job opportunity, strong public schools, a strong defense,” Dean said.

Asked about it on the “Fox & Friends” show, GOP Party Chairman Ken Mehlman joked that “a lot of folks who attended my Bar Mitzvah would be surprised” he heads a Christian party
