Today is the one year anniversary since Islamic extremists attacked satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

A man was shot and killed by French police as he threatened police officers with a knife. A police union official, said the man may have been wearing an explosives vest, and cried out “Allahu Akbar” or ‘God is great’ in Arabic. The authorities are treating this as a possible terror attack.

Police shot and killed a man Thursday after he tried to enter a northern Paris police station wielding a knife, a French Interior Ministry spokesman told CNN affiliate BFMTV.

The man was shouting “Allahu Akbar,” Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said.

UPDATE I: Two French officials say a man shot dead outside a Paris police station was wearing a fake explosives vest.

The two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation, said he had wires protruding from his body. They said he has not yet been identified.

One of the officials said the man threatened officers at the police station in northern Paris with a butcher’s knife.

Today, Pope Francis issued a Christmas Day prayer from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome that called for peace for Syria and Libya, prayers for the suffering and denounced the radical Islamist “monstrous evil” and atrocities.” The Pope made reference to the heinous terror attacks in Paris earlier this year. He also made mention of the attacks in Egypt’s airspace and in Beirut, Mali and Tunisia. The Pope further went in to denounce the ongoing conflicts in Africa, the Middle East and Ukraine and issued words of consolation to Christians being persecuted for their faith in many parts of the world. Isn’t it quite amazing that pretty much all that the Pope is referencing as “monstrous evil” and atrocities” is at the hands of radical Islam? The Pope stated, “Only God’s mercy can free humanity from the many forms of evil, at times monstrous evil, which selfishness spawns in our midst.”

Pope Francis issued a Christmas Day prayer that recent U.N.-backed peace processes for Syria and Libya will quickly end the suffering of their people, denouncing the “monstrous evil” and atrocities they have endured and praising countries that have taken in refugees.

Speaking from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Francis issued a plenary indulgence for all Catholics in hopes of spreading the church’s message of mercy in a world torn by war, poverty and extremist attacks. The sun-soaked St. Peter’s Square was under heavy security, as it has been since the Nov. 13 Paris attacks by Islamic extremists that left 130 dead.

An indulgence is an ancient church tradition related to the forgiveness of sins. Francis announced it after delivering his annual “Urbi et Orbi” (To the city and the world) speech listing global hotspots and his prayers for an end to human suffering.

Francis referred to the “brutal acts of terrorism” that struck the French capital this year, as well as attacks in Egypt’s airspace and in Beirut, Mali and Tunisia. He denounced the ongoing conflicts in Africa, the Middle East and Ukraine and issued words of consolation to Christians being persecuted for their faith in many parts of the world.

“They are our martyrs of today,” he said.

Air France Flight Heading to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris from Mauritius Diverted Due to Suspected Bomb Device

Air France fight 463 that was heading to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris from Mauritius was diverted to the Kenyan city of Mombasa early Sunday morning. The pilots requested an emergency landing after a device suspected to be a bomb was found in a lavatory. Authorities are questioning several suspects who were on an Air France flight.  The device was made of cardboard, paper and a household timer, and had been found in a little cupboard that is behind a mirror. It was later determined to be a fake. 473 passengers and crew has to be evacuated from the aircraft by slides.

Kenyan authorities are questioning several suspects who were on an Air France flight from Mauritius to Paris that was forced to land early Sunday in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa after a device suspected to be a bomb was found in a lavatory.

The CEO of Air France said hours after the plane had been grounded that the device discovered in the bathroom was a fake bomb.

The Boeing 777 was heading to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris from Mauritius when its pilots requested an emergency landing at early Sunday in the Kenyan city of Mombasa.

Frederic Gagey, the head of the airline, said the device was made of cardboard, paper and a household timer, and had been found in a little cupboard that is behind a mirror.

UPDATE I: Four arrested after bomb scare causes Air France flight to divert to Kenya.

Four people have been arrested over a suspicious device that was found in the restroom of an Air France flight, prompting an emergency landing in Kenya early Sunday.

The four had all been on board Air France Flight 463, a Boeing 777 bound from Mauritius to Paris, which was diverted to the coastal Kenyan city of Mombasa after the device was found, Kenyan Cabinet secretary for the Ministry of Interior Joseph Nkaissery told CNN. He did not disclose their nationalities.

Yet just another excuse to lecture people about how they should conduct their lives and limit their opportunities as Obama creates the carbon footprint that even none of ever could in our lifetime. If you actually believe in carbon footprints that is. Because only the little people are supposed to sacrifice, not the Obamamessiah.

As working dinners go, President Obama’s meal Monday night in Paris with French President Francois Hollande, Secretary of State John Kerry and others wasn’t too shabby.

No cartons of takeout — instead, the gang fueled up after a long day of climate talks at L’Ambroisie, the three-Michelin-starred temple of gastronomie in the Marais neighborhood.

Per the Michelin Guide, the ornately be-chandelier-ed dining room is known for “incomparable classicism and an immortal feast for the senses.”

Perhaps worried that Obama would create an international faux pas by ordering a burger or a margarita (two of  his faves), a reporter asked what he planned to eat. Obama was, appropriately, diplomatic: “I will get recommendations from the president,” he answered, nodding in Hollande’s direction.

According to the AP, Obama cracked a joke about the opulence of the setting. “Don’t break the chandelier,” he warned as a reporter’s microphone got just a little too close to the crystal. “You can’t afford it.”

Seriously folks, who could even take any of this serious when all it looks like is an excuse for a party?

French Authorities Confirm Suspected Paris Islamist Terror Attack Ringleader Abdelhamid Abaaoud Killed in Police Raid

The Paris prosecutor’s office announced Thursday that the suspected ringleader, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, in last week’s bloody radical-Islamist terrorist attacks in Paris was killed in a pre-dawn raid Wednesday on an apartment building in Saint Denis. Abaaoud’s body was found in the Saint-Denis building riddled with bullets. Authorities said that he was positively identified using DNA and papillary prints, which include patterns on fingers, palms and the soles of feet. NBC News reports that the confirmation of Abdelhamid Abaaoud’s death came as authorities launched six raids in Brussels, including in the impoverished Molenbeek neighborhood where Abaaoud grew up.
