Richard Knerr dies at 82 … Co-Founder of Wham-O Toys … The day the Frisbee & Hula Hoop Died

Talk about a death that brings many of us back to the days of our childhood. FrisbeeRichard Knerr has died at the age of 82 after earlier in the day suffering a stroke. Richard Knerr was one of the co-founders of Wham-O, the toy company that brought us such classic and timeless toys as the Frisbee, the Hula Hoop, the Superball, the Slip ‘N Slide and Silly String.

The amount of enjoyment that Richard Knerr and his late partner, Arthur “Spud” Melin, provided generations of kids and adults a like can probably never be matched. Thank you for such timeless classics like the Frisbee, the Hula Hoop and Silly String. Richard Knerr … Rest in peace,

Knerr, who started Wham-O in 1948 with his childhood friend Arthur “Spud” Melin, died Monday at Methodist Hospital after suffering a stroke earlier in the day at his Arcadia home, his wife Dorothy told the Los Angeles Times.

They branched into other sporting goods, including boomerangs and Sillystringcrossbows, then added toys that often bore such playful names as the Superball, Slip ‘N Slide and Silly String.

When a friend told them in 1958 about a large ring used for exercise in Australia, they devised their own version and called it the Hula Hoop.

Around the same time, they bought the rights to a plastic flying disc invented by Walter “Fred” Morrison, who called it the Pluto Platter. Wham-O bought the rights and renamed it the Frisbee.

The rest is amusement history. (Yahoo News)

Sir Edmund Hillary the Conquerer of Mount Everest has died at the Age of 88

Sir Edmund Hillary, the man who conquered Mount Everest has died at the age Sir_Edmund_Hillaryof 88. Known in Nepal as “burra sahib’ or ‘big man,’ Sir Edmund Hillary has passed away, may he rest in peace.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Sir Edmund Hillary, the unassuming beekeeper who conquered Mount Everest to win renown as one of the 20th century’s greatest adventurers, has died, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark announced Friday. He was 88.

The gangling New Zealander devoted much of his life to aiding the mountain people of Nepal and took his fame in stride, preferring to be called “Ed” and considering himself just an ordinary beekeeper.

“Sir Ed described himself as an average New Zealander with modest abilities. In reality, he was a colossus. He was an heroic figure who not only ‘knocked off’ Everest but lived a life of determination, humility, and generosity,” Clark said in a statement.

Of course in more recent years Sir Edmund Hillary’s name became more well known for all the wrong reasons. Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton actually forwarded the notion that he was her “name sake”. She would finally admit she lied.

Gateway Pundit: Hillary Clinton’s Namesake Dies At 88

For years Bill and Hillary Clinton claimed that Hillary was named after the famed mountain climber.
It was a lie.
It was later discovered that Hillary was born six years before the famous climb up Mount Everest.

The Leader of the Band, Singer & Song Writer Dan Fogelberg Dies at the Age of 56

Singer and song writer, Dan Fogelberg, passed away today at the age of 56 at his home in Maine after battling prostate cancer. Dan Fogelberg was known for his 1980’s soft music ballads such as “Leader of the Band”, “The Innocent Age” and “Same Old Lang Syne”. However, Dan Fogelberg’s passing reminds me on a personal note of a long college friend who I have not talked to in far to long. He and his wife’s wedding song was “Longer”.

Through the years as the fire starts to mellow
Burning lines in the book of our lives
Though the binding cracks and the pages start to yellow
Ill be in love with you.

Its a reminder of what truly great lyrics Dan wrote and songs he sang. Dan Fogelberg will be missed, rest in peace.

Dan Fogelberg, the singer and songwriter whose hits “Leader of the Band” and “Same Old Lang Syne” helped define the soft-rock era, died Sunday at his home in Maine after battling prostate cancer. He was 56.

His death was announced in a statement released by his family through the firm Scoop Marketing, and it was also posted on the singer’s Web site.

“Dan left us this morning at 6:00 a.m. He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side,” it read. “His strength, dignity and grace in the face of the daunting challenges of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him.” (FOX News)
