WHERE IS 5 DAY OLD KAYDEN POWELL?
5 day old Kayden Powell has been missing since 4:35 a.m. Thursday, February 6, 2014 in Beloit, Wisconsin. The authorities were called Thursday morning by the baby’s mother, 18 year old Brianna Marshall, who woke to find her baby missing. 5 day old Kayden J. Powell was missing from his bassinet in the room where she was sleeping at 836 E. Homeland Court (MAP). According to tax records, the residence is owned by Shirley J. Bennett, the baby’s great-grandmother. Brianna Marshall and the baby’s father, Bruce Powell, 23, were at the residence at the time the baby was reported missing, along with Bennett and Marshall’s brother.

The FBI is helping local authorities search for a 5-day-old baby, who was reported missing by his mother at 4:35 a.m. Thursday.
“The FBI is here, the Division of Criminal Investigation is in route, and we’ve got assistance from the city of Beloit (Police Department) and Rock County Sheriff’s Office,” said Steve Kopp, town of Beloit police chief.
The Rock County Sheriff’s Office has sent 16 people to the scene, including all members of its detective bureau, all members of its special investigations unit, two patrol deputies and a commander, Chief Deputy Barb Barrington-Tillman said.
The authorities were called Thursday morning by Brianna Marshall, 18, who woke and found her 5-day-old baby, Kayden J. Powell, missing from his bassinet in the room where she was sleeping at 836 E. Homeland Court, he said.

UPDATE II: Police interviewing family in infant’s disappearance.
Kopp said Marshall reported the incident as an apparent abduction.
Police in Iowa took the baby’s aunt into custody later Thursday for questioning. She had been visiting the residence at 836 E. Homeland Court and left at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday. That was about the last time people at the residence saw the baby, Kopp said.
Kopp said police reached the woman on her cellphone Thursday as she was driving near West Branch, Iowa, which is along Interstate 80 about 180 miles southwest of Beloit. Police asked the woman to pull over. An officer took the woman into custody after learning she had an outstanding Texas warrant accusing her of fraud, Kopp said.
The baby was not with the woman when police found her, and the baby had not been located as of Thursday afternoon, Kopp said. It’s not clear why the aunt left early Thursday morning. She apparently is a Colorado resident and was visiting after the baby was born, Kopp said.
The woman was being questioned along with four other people who had been staying at the residence Wednesday night, Kopp said.
Marshall and the baby’s father, Bruce Powell, 23, of Beloit, were at the residence at the time the baby was reported missing, along with Bennett and Marshall’s brother. They were among those being questioned. They were cooperative, and the parents were “very distraught and upset,” Kopp said.
The parents had been staying at the residence because a person who lives with them at their Beloit home was ill and they didn’t want to expose the newborn baby to the sick person, Kopp said.
Anyone with information on this incident can contact the Town of Beloit Police Department at 608-757-2244, or Greater Beloit Crimestoppers at 608-362-7463.
UPDATE III: Missing Wisconsin newborn found safe in Iowa.
A newborn baby reported missing in Wisconsin early Thursday morning has been found safe in Iowa, police announced Friday.
Authorities say Kayden Powell, born February 1, was found Friday morning in a tote bag outside a gas station in eastern Iowa.
Town of Beloit Police Chief Steven Kopp says the nearly week-old baby was discovered by an officer checking along an interstate near West Branch on Friday morning.
FBI acting special agent G.B. Jones said at a news conference the officer heard the newborn crying and discovered the child in the tote bag. Authorities say the child appears to be in good condition.

Missing Wisconsin baby Kayden Powell found alive; Kristin Smith, aunt, charged with kidnapping from Beloit bassinette
Friday, February 07, 2014
Federal kidnapping charges have been filed against Kristin Smith, the aunt of a missing Wisconsin baby who was found in Iowa. The 5-day-old infant was snatched from his bassinette in his Beloit home.
Authorities said the 6-pound, 20-inch newborn was found Friday at 10:15 a.m. near a gas station a half-mile from where his aunt was taken into custody in West Branch, near Cedar Rapids, Iowa, after leaving the Beloit home in the middle of the night early Thursday.
FBI acting special agent G.B. Jones said at a news conference the West Branch police chief heard the newborn crying and discovered the child swaddled in blankets in a tote bag outside a gas station. Authorities say the child appears to be in good condition.
Authorities said the outcome of the case was extremely positive despite the bitter cold. ….
Jones said the child’s discovery was not part of a “directed” search, meaning they weren’t told where to look.
The baby’s aunt was visiting the home Wednesday evening but said she left early Thursday for Colorado where she lives. Police were able to reach the woman on her cellphone, and she pulled off the highway in Iowa. Authorities took Kristin Smith into custody on an unrelated outstanding warrant from Texas at a convenience store along I-80. Police say they found baby clothes in the aunt’s car but not the baby. FBI agents then went to Iowa to question Smith.
Police would not speculate where the aunt was headed before the infant was found.
