The US Postal department is going to end first class mail delivery on Saturday’s in order to save the financially strapped government courier. The USPS lost $16 billion last year. Yes, billion with a “B”. It appears that the James Farley Post Office in New York City is going to have to change their inscription to “Neither Snow nor Rain nor Heat nor Gloom of Night Stays these Couriers from the Swift Completion of their Appointed Rounds … Except on Saturdays!!!”
Get ready for some big changes in your mail service. After losing $16 billion last year, the postmaster general will make announce Wednesday that the Postal Service intends to halt Saturday delivery of first-class mail by this summer, Aug. 1, CBS News has learned. That means most mailers, letters and catalogs would not arrive on Saturdays, ending a 150-year tradition.
The plan to shrink delivery from six days a week to five would only affect first-class mail, while packages, mail-order medicines, priority and express mail would still get delivered on Saturdays.
Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., says the move will save the struggling postal service $2 billion a year. “It’s a proper business decision and (in the) long run, good for the Postal Service and good for Americans.”
The Postal Service has lost $41 billion dollars over the past six years as more and more Americans turned to private shippers, email, and online banking.
To save money, the Postal Service slashed hours of service at about half the nation’s 26,000 post offices and trimmed its workforce by 35 percent.
I have to agree with Hot Air, how much of a change really is this? So there is no delivery on Saturday, you will get the same package on Monday. Will one less day rally cut into a $16 billion deficit? What really comes in the mail these days but junk mail and bills. Even individuals bills these days are done on line. Any real important packages or correspondence is sent via FEDEX or UPS. I think the USPS is going to have to take more drastic actions than one less day of delivery. If the government wants to dismantle the military with sequestration, they might want to do the same with the useless dinosaur called the US Postal Service.

The USPS should look at contracting some of the second class mail and all of the junk mail to cut costs. They are stuck with union work rules that add costs. These rules need to be reviewed to eleminate dulplicate functions.
Was this mentioned before the stamp just went up again? I think the P.O. is almost obsolete now and they are helping push themselves into that as fast as possible!!
International rates were almost doubled. The higher rates are killing the e-commerce business for inexpensive, small package items:

I’ll bet there’s not one elected offical that has not been lobbied by private carriers for the profitable part of the US Mail. Kids will remember 46 cent stamps like I remember nickel candy bars and cokes. Maybe Haliburton or Blackwater will get the contract to deliver mail while armed and we can privatize law enforcement and bundle it all with Correction Corp of America for a package deal. We could use prisoners to sort mail.
Actually, I read in 2010/11 UPS was in discussions with a USPS buy-out. Didn’t happen. USPS WAS the cheapest form of delivery for small packages with the employees having the greatest benefit packages.
The current financial and social state of the US
War veterns used to get preferred hiring status by USPS with great benefit/retirment packages as a result of past patriotic duty. Now Walmart is offering them jobs.
