Dyer County, TN High School Student Kendra Turner Suspended For Saying ‘Bless You’ After Classmate Sneezed

To the IDIOT teacher that would be so offended by a student saying bless you … Bless your heart.

So much for the Bible belt … Kendra Turner, a  Dyer County High School senior was suspended for saying “bless you” after a fellow classmate sneezed. HUH? Mind you the high school student did not even say God bless you, just bless you. But for this she was told to go to the school administrator and then served the rest of the class period with in-school suspension. According to reports, bless you is on a list of words that this teacher does not allow in her class that include: stupid, dumb, boring, stuff, i don’t know, other peer expressions, bless you, hang out and my bad. I am guess they don’t teach the US Constitution at Dyer County high School and namely the First Amendment. In this day and age where we yearn for our youth to be responsible and kind to one another and battle school bullying, this is the crime that gets a student suspension? Really, why stop there … had she said God bless you would that have meant being expelled?

KUDOS to Kendra Turner for standing up for her rights.

Action News 5 – Memphis, Tennessee

A young girl, who claims she was standing up for her religious beliefs in the classroom, was suspended after breaking a class rule of saying “bless you” after a classmate sneezed.

When Dyer County High School senior Kendra Turner said bless you to her classmate, she says her teacher told her that was for church.

“She said that we’re not going to have godly speaking in her class and that’s when I said we have a Constitutional right,” said Turner.

Turner said when she defended her actions, she was told to see an administrator. She said she finished the class period in in-school suspension.

Students sent WMC a photo of the teacher’s white board that lists ‘bless you’ and other expressions that are banned as part of class rules.

God Bless You

Pretty amazing how this high school senior is a bigger individual than her teacher. I guess God will do that.  Kendra Turner said she doesn’t want trouble for her teacher but says she’ll stand up for her faith … “It’s alright to defend God and it’s our constitutional right because we have a freedom of religion and freedom of speech.”

Here is my note to the teacher that would some how think that bless you and stupid would ever be included in the same list. As I was hanging out I came across a teacher that was outraged that a student said bless you.  This educator might be the most stupid and closed minded individual ever that would some how be so dumb that words like boring and stuff would be used in the same sentence as bless you. I guess if I said this in class it would get me suspended or expelled, sorry, my bad!

Good for the young lady. She stood by her convictions and took the suspension. This is just one battle of many she will face regarding her religion if she continues her education at the college level.

The parents need to contact the school administration and determine how those words were selected to be on the white board.

Yes, until the citizens require proper levels of accomplishment for those teaching in the K-12 environment, this type of thing will continue. I would be willing to bet that this teacher could not pass an eighth grade test of fifty years ago and knows or cares zip about the right of free speech.

God Bless you Kendra, it takes guts to stand for what you believe in, stay with it. And God help the employees of the Dyer County School system, appears they need all the help they can get.

Where has freedom of speech gone in this country. Not to mention that being polite can now get you kicked out of school. Lets look at those who need to use fowl language at least three times in any sentence, those who can’t walk straight because their pants will fall down to their ankles (they walk like my kids did when their diapers were full). Next thing you know they will punish anyone who says “please” or “thank you”. The only time people seem to really come together is if their is some type of catastrophe and that is because a lot of them want in on the lawsuit that is going to follow. (It’s gotta be someone else’s fault). It’s bad enough that we can’t show freedom of religion in school, but now it’s freedom of speech. Maybe Zager and Evans were right…”In the year 2525…everything you think, do and say is in the pill you took today”. Common sense is gone! GOD BLESS YOU, KENDRA!

As a former member of the U. S. Armed Forces and a long time educator in Michigan, I am appalled and dismayed by our governments interference with our Constitution’s First Amenment rights. Teachers and students may not point a finger at someone for fear of being imprisoned for violating a weapons law. Children in the primary grades have ben hauled off, handcuffed and tossed into police cars for drawing a picture of a gun or a cowboy wearing a holster. And the name of “GOD” may be used as an excuse to punish any person who expresses it. But to say a simple “Bless You” as a response to sneezing (not even mentioning God) is to incur the wrath of our educational system. This is so bizarre it boggles the mind. This is the same type of Fascism that allowed Hitler, Stalin and other monstrous dictators to exterminate millions upon millions of people. Where do we draw the line? Is it already too late? I’m waiting to see a kid in cooking class arrested for drawing a pressure cooker even though he or she did not know of their use in bombs. Better yet, when the teacher writes her list of no-nos on the board, she might suggest that the home be searched for pressure cookers and the family sent to a death camp. Our educational system and our country is out of control. If we do not stop this “political correctness” which is another name for Fascism, the United States with it so called rights is doomed! This teacher is an abomination. She is dangerous!

Obviously this teacher is lacking in knowledge of the freedoms guaranteed us by the Constitution. How dare her make a list of words and phrases she dislikes and applying that list in her classroom with dire consequences to any student who believes in freedom of speech? She needs to be sent to the office and be suspended without pay for violating this student’s Constitutional right to practice her religion. The Constitution not only says that the government cannot establish a religion, but it cannot prevent the “Free exercize thereof.” This teacher, in her position as a teacher, was acting under cover of authority and had no right to do so.

Matthew 5:11-12 “Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.” God help your teacher and the principal. They need to ask God’s forgiveness. “Politically correct” is evil. It distorts the TRUTH – which comes from the Creator of the universe and all conceived people since Adam and Eve. God bless you, Kendra. Your reward will be great in heaven. I wish I could say the same for your school system. God is proud of you.

I’m not sure about this story yet. If it happened just like this–the teacher was offended at “bless you”–then clearly it’s an appalling story. But there’s only one side being presented so far in all these news reports–the student’s. I’m not sure the media is responsibly reporting this. Seems more like sensationalism.
