I too was on this ship, and observed a sanctioned event, as it was winding up–a “pub crawl” that I was told this couple participated in. Like many passengers, I witnessed an out-of-control situation that had resulted in many participants being seriously over-served alcoholic beverages. The ring leader of this event, an African American Holland female employee was herself severely inebriated, slurring her words and clearly not able to monitor the situation in the interest of protecting guests from harming themselves. It was definitely a “frat party”, or “spring break” kind of atmosphere, with shots being laid out on the bar for the participants at this next-to-the-last stop that I happened upon. Another guest said that Yagermeister was one of the shots served after an obviously long evening of debauchery. It was outrageous, at least in my opinion, and judging from the reactions of others coming back from dining, or other activities, I was not the only one who felt this presented an endangerment to the participants as well as others onboard. The group chanted and yelled as they wove and stumbled down the hall to their final destination. As I walked back to my room, it occurred to me that I would not be surprised to learn that someone had fallen overboard, or otherwise hurt themselves or someone else. Lo and behold, in the middle of the night came the announcement that Mr. Rappe was missing. I feel that Holland bears not a small amount of responsibility in this terrible tragedy. When you have the person who’s leading such an event who’s gone out of control, who is left to make sure that guests safety is secure as they make their way around the ship after the party’s over? I’m no prude, and I like to drink with the best of ‘em, but this was a situation that was WAY OUT OF CONTROL. It is no surprise whatsoever that this happened. We were just sick that about Mr. Rappe’s disappearance for the rest of the cruise. Holland America better wake up!!!

After reading the above comments I can only surmise that the person writing wasnt actually a part of the pub crawl as it was called. I was at the front with the lady who was leading it and she didnt drink at all wasnt slurring and when she gave a toast she didnt even partake just held up a glass for show, I was there and was a participant we had one cocktail at each of 4 different bars on the ship it was a party atmosphere, but anyone getting intoxicated there had to have come there already in that condition. I dont believe Mr. Rappe was even a mpart of the group as I only observed him at the aft bar (which was the second bar)and he was easily recognized!
