We Have Lost All Common Sense … Hallandale Beach Lifeguard Tomas Lopez Fired for Savings Drowing Man Because He Left His Post (Update: Lifeguard Offered Job Back, Tells them to Pound Sand)
GOOD GRIEF … LITIGIOUS SOCIETY HAS TRUMPED COMMON SENSE.
A life guard was fired for saving a drowning. Why one might ask? because he left his post in the process and the company who employes the lifeguards are more concerned about liability than they are saving an individual’s life. The company supervisor stated, “We have liability issues and can’t go out of the protected area.” How misguided could one be? But sadly, this is how fearful companies have become of frivolous lawsuits. They actually have a company policy that a lifeguard has to stay at their post even if they see someone drowning in another zone.
As lifeguards are paid and trained to do, Tomas Lopez rushed down the beach to rescue a drowning man — and then got fired for it.
The problem: Lopez stepped out of the beach zone his company is paid to patrol, a supervisor said Tuesday.
“I ran out to do the job I was trained to do,” said Lopez, 21, of Davie. “I didn’t think about it at all.”
At least two other lifeguards have quit in protest.
“What was he supposed to do? Watch a man drown?” asked one, Szilard Janko.

How sad that the moral thing to do got this guy fired. UNREAL.
UPDATE I: Lifeguard fired from his job for saving a man out of his zone has been offered job back by company. Ellis Management Company has admitted their mistake in firing Lopez for his actions.
After Lopez was fired, three other lifeguards quit in protest and two others were also terminated. Since then three more lifeguards quit. All of the original six have been offered their jobs back, according to Ellis. All six said have said ‘thanks but no thanks’, they’re not interested.
UPDATE II: Lifeguard tells company who was fired declines rehiring ... tells them to pound sand. Good for you dude.

We will continue to see this type of company behavior until every state enacts a means to prevent frivolous law suits.
We have way too many law schools turning out young lawyers with no way to make a living except to participate in opportunities to sue someone for leaving a post or some other thing like defending themselves and customers in a robbery attempt.
