RSSYIKES: Martin Luther King’s Daughter Bernice King: “Lincoln Remembered for Signing the Declaration of Independence”
Oh boy, I do not remember this from my American History classes from school … “Lincoln Remembered for Signing the Declaration of Independence”.
From NewsBusters (VIDEO)comes the following miscue on the part of Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter Bernice King when speaking at a ceremony to honor the opening of the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in our nation’s capital. She stated during her speech, “Lincoln remembered for signing the Declaration of Independence.” Oops, wanna get away.
BERNICE KING: But as I close, I close with the recognition that daddy is standing, Lincoln is seated. Lincoln remembered for signing the Declaration of Independence. Daddy being remembered as standing up for truth and standing up for justice and standing up for righteousness and standing up for peace and standing up for freedom. Daddy is now standing on the National Mall in our nation’s capital.
As also pointed out by NewsBusters, and we will second … this is an obvious case of the misspoken word. I would believe that Ms. King is completely aware that Lincoln did not sign the Declaration of Independence and thus the reason why the MSM did not make such a big deal of this or was it because they were wrapped up in wall to wall coverage of Hurricane Irene?
However, that’s not the real story here. What would the MSM of done if such a comment like “Lincoln is seated. Lincoln remembered for signing the Declaration of Independence” was made by GWB, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann or any Republican? I would dare say that they would have done Breaking News into the hurricane coverage to announce the faux pas. But of course we know there is no double standard in the MSM, is there.

When neither the speech writer or the presentor understand history, this is what you likley get.
Ms. King was reading the speech. Did she realy know just what lincoln did or stood for? Other than he was on the penny and had something to do with freeing the slaves, I doubt it.
If a conservative said this can you imagine the headlines???
Lincoln was much older than he looked.
This article compares someone who barely makes the news and most people know nothing about, Bernice King, to politicians on the right who make a living fronting the camera and espousing their views on others. It’s like comparing apples and oranges. Are you that stupid??

SM: Stupid is what Stupid does … you might want to do a little more research. You think the family of MLK Jr. are not on the speaking circuit? Really? You might want to take a look and investigate what they get for licensing fees for MLK’s likeness and words.
A gaffe is a gaffe; however, if you want to make such a leap, how much criticism did Obama get for saying there was 57 states in the US? Of course there is a double standard … but you are so quick to jump on any one with an “R”.
I know Bernice King very well; I worked for her and the King family for over a decade. I can tell you without question that BERNICE KNOWS LINCOLN SIGNED THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION & not the Declaration of Independence. If you notice, she was very caught up in the moment? & just misspoke. It’s really that simple. To make it anything other than is just searching for something to complain about. Why would Bernice King insult Lincoln like that? In drawing a contrast between standing Daddy and sitting Lincoln, she is basically saying that Lincoln did NOT stand for freedom, truth, righteousness, etc.
