Oops, Christina Aguilera Messed Up National Anthem at Super Bowl … flubs ‘O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming’

RUT-ROH … Christina Aguilera just made up her own version of the US National Anthem. On the most grand stage, I guess she should have asked a “Genie in a bottle” for the correct lyrics.

US NATIONAL ANTHEM

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watch’d, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Super Bowl XLV was not quite as super as some are claiming; however, neither was Christina Aguilera’s rendition of the National Anthem prior to the game. Aguilera messed up a line as she sang the national anthem. At the time when I first listened, I thought something sounded a bit wrong. What happened was, when she was supposed to sing the line “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming,” she repeaeated an earlier line. Oops, like a Southwest Air commercial, wanna get away? Needless to say that thetweets, Facebook and texting went insane after the gaffe.

Naturally tweeters and other online commenters went nuts, calling Xtina a bimbo and a hack, among other choice names. But what do you think? Is this mistake inexcusable? Or should we cut Aguilera a break for at least demonstrating her vocal talents, if not a rock-solid memory?

 RUT-ROH

Christina Aguilera flubbed a line as she belted out the national anthem at the start of the Super Bowl Sunday night.

When she was supposed to sing the line “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming,” she instead repeated an earlier line, with a slight variation.

She sang “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming,” which is the same line from earlier in the song but with the word ‘watched’ instead of the word ‘hailed.’

Looks like Christina got it right HERE.

Ok, lets point out the positives of the National Anthem in the VIDEO above. Kudos to the NFL showing the US troops at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan and the grown men NFL players tearing up as they listened to the words.

Altho this lady’s voice can do so many variations,
I prefer to hear our National Anthem sung straight
as written and not ginger-breaded with fancy vocal
meanderings and such. Basically, she has a powerful
      and rich sounding presentation capability.

Much worse has been done in the past. Obvious mistake with not a hint of disrespect.

yes, if she had just stuck to the song and it’s meaning instead of hip hopping, it would have meant much more.

What an embarrassment. And to top it off The Black Eyed Peas stunk up the halftime show.

Jeez who books the entertainment for these events?

I hate it when performers take it upon themselves to change the tune or the lyrics. Some of the black performers really make a song sound like crap.

The National Anthem is not a hip hop song or one that requires the performer to ad-lib his or her own embelishments.

This is a song about our country, not one to spotlight the “musician”. Of course, if you have little or no respect for the song, this performance shows how disrespectful one can be.

Maybe if she was more focused on the words and not adding all her ooos and ahhhhs and riffs and what not she would have gotten it right! I’m not a fan of christina ever, this is no exception. Big thumbs down!

“I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of it’s anthem still came through.”

I respectfully disagree w/most on this one—she made a mistake, what’s the big?

I think she is an incredible Singer and the MSM is making too big of a deal about it. Go see Burlesque and then try to convince me she is not absolutely talented or a phenominal performer. May not like her at all or her style, but she hasn’t sold millions of records since she first hit the Pop Scene back in the late 90′s because she’s just a flash in the pan either.

I love her and her earlier stuff, too. Go on YouTube and see her official Music Video of “HURT” or her Duo with Ricky Martin “Nobody wants to be Lonely” and tell me the woman can’t sing beautifully or passionately and I’ll eat my hat.

      =)

…hearing her explanation I choose to cut her some slack.

Her heart was in it. The “rock-throwers” that feel a need to vilify her need a different target on this one. Go back to cretins like Roseanne Barr singing the national anthem a few years ago to witness disrespect of our country’s anthem.

As NGB pointed out, her statement “I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of it’s anthem still came through.” was understood by myself and the majority of true Americans.

Those that can’t grasp that…the problem is theirs, not hers.

Thank you Christina, for admiting to being a less than perfect human being and making a mistake now and then but loving this country and all it stands for, unlike so many here.

By the way,I LIKE THE BLACK EYED PEAS!

these performers are paid millions of dollars to perform and they can’t even perform. this is what happens when they step out of the studio. i guess the voice enhancers and teleprompters don’t work in football stadiums.

AWE, COME ON… CUT HER A BREAK!

SHE ONLY HAD A BILLION PEOPLE WATCHING,
      SO… NO PRESSURE!

IF THE MISTAKE HAD BEEN STRATEGICALLY CALCULATED TO DISRESPECT THE SONG OR THIS COUNTRY –
      I WOULD BE FURIOUS.

BUT THE NATURE OF HER MISTAKE REVEALS AN OBVIOUSLY INNOCENT FLUB…
      WHICH COULD HAPPEN TO ANYONE!

SO MS. AGUILARA DEFINITELY SHOULD BE GIVEN THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT!

    13. Michelle Smith on February 8th, 2011 7:48 pm

I absolutely agree the girl can sing. Yes, she made a mistake; no she doesn’t need to be crucified over it. I don’t think she intentionally was disrespecting the song but if people would just sing the song as it was intended and stop trying to make it their own, I would appreciate it much more. I loved when Whitney Houston sang it; it gave me goose bumps.

I was just not impressed with any of the festivities of the night other than the game itself.
