AMBER ALERT Issues for 12 Year Old Brittany Mae Smith in Virginia, Daughter Abducted, Mother Tina Smith Shot Dead, Jeffrey Scott Easley Suspect

From Internet romance to mom found dead and 12 year old daughter abducted and missing …

An AMBER ALERT has been issued in Virginia for missing 12 year old Brittany Mae Smith.  She was last seen on Friday. The story gets worse as it appears that an Internet relationship has gone terribly wrong.  Jeff Easley and  Tina Smith met on the Internet and Easley moved into her house in Roanoke County along with her 12 year old daughter a few months ago. The red flags are already going off with most people; however, sadly not for Tina and Brittany Mae Smith. A co-worker found Tina Smith slain in her home after she failed to show up at her nursing home job for two days. Her 12-year-old daughter, Brittany Mae Smith, was gone.

Authorities issued a national Amber Alert for Brittany Smith and her description was broadcast frequently on police radios throughout Southwest Virginia. The frantic search included a false sighting Monday night of a girl walking along Interstate 81 in Botetourt County. The case was featured on the HLN television crime show Nancy Grace.

Roanoke County police located Easley’s red 2000 Chevrolet SUV. Missing still was Smith’s car, a silver 2005 Dodge Neon sedan, Virginia tag XKF-2365.

“We are all wondering, ‘What in the world is going to happen to Brittany?’ ” said Fiona Walden, 40, who lives in Tina Smith’s hometown of South Boston, near the North Carolina border.

Smith and Brittany were “as close as a mother can be to a daughter,” Walden said. “Her daughter was her world. Everything she did was for her daughter.”

Mason said police aren’t calling Easley a suspect in Tina Smith’s homicide. The Amber Alert flatly declares him Brittany Smith’s abductor.

The missing child is Tina Smith’s 12-year old daughter, Brittany, a seventh-grade student at Glenvar Middle school. Police say Tina and Brittany Smith were last seen in the area Friday morning.

Brittany Smith’s parents are divorced. The child’s father, Ben Smith, is a police officer in South Boston and is cooperating with authorities.

Police believe Brittany Smith was abducted by 32-year old Jeffrey Scott Easley. Police say Easley and Tina Smith were friends and that Easley may have lived in the home until recently. Easley is described as a white male with brown hair and hazel eyes, and he may have a goatee. He’s five feet 11 inches tall and weighs 265 pounds. Police say Easley was last seen in the area Friday evening. Easley works for an area landscaping company.

If the police are not calling Easley a suspect tnen what are they calling him? It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure who killed the mom.

The 12yr old daughter appears to be having a romantic relationship with Easley. If this is true, there is a possibility she was involved in her mothers murder. I hope not and I also hope she is ok.

He was in a relationship with the mother, not the 12 y/o daughter. It wouldn’t surprise me if he got involved with the mother to get to the daughter, as pedophiles often do. He probably molested Brittany, and killed Tina (the mother) when she found out, then kidnapped Brittany. I don’t think you can accuse a 12 y/o of having a consensual romantic relationship with a 32 y/o man.

The innuendo in the local media today is that this young lady may have had an inappropriate relationship with the guy her mother met online. No one here is saying the mother was shot. They are saying that an autopsy will be done to determine cause of death.

On both Brittany’s facebook and myspace she listed her last name as Easley. It does sound as if Brittany and Easley were in a relationship and I’m assuming the mom found out. I also agree that Brittany is a child and that Easley took advantage of her. That said I still HOPE that Brittany didn’t have anything to do with the murder of her mother.

Remember Valessa from Tampa who’s older boyfriend killed her mom so they could be “together”? Her mom was Vicki Robinson. I remember because my mom and sister worked at the private school Valessa attended and BOTH had her in class. Not a model student.

My sister said she absolutely obsessed over that boyfriend although the defense suggested she was afraid. No…she was not afraid. His name was scrawled on everything she had…like her hands, sneakers, pants…books. My mother said whenever she had to scold the girl..she’s glare and say, “You are NOT my mother”. Wow….to your homeroom teacher?

Hope this 12 yr old was totally UNinvolved in whatever happened to her mother. I used to work in Roanoke and drove through Glenvar and Salem daily. Apple-pie and baseball type country-corner place. No where is safe from this crap.

Another sad event caused by an internet romance by a non-thinking adult.

I would be willing to bet that this guy has a background of using women wherever he can manage to meet them.

There’s a photo of Easley and Brittany @ the local Walmart in Salem on Friday about 8pm on the sites below. The mother’s credit card was used for the purchaes.

Here’s a post from someone who get on Brittany’s facebook before it was blocked. It’s rather rambling, but that post shows Brittany was smitten by this big lug:

      Posted by Link85 on Dec. 7, 2010 – 3:03 p.m.
I’ve read and heard that Easley thus far is not believed to be a suspect in Tina’s death but I haven’t read or heard anyone say that Tina’s death may not be a homocide.

And.. I don’t think that saying Brittany left with Easley willingly is making light of the situation either. If anything, it’ll draw MORE attention to finding the 2.

Brittany’s myspace update says the following:
brittany easleys what they call me (: <3

See the "HCB?" That stands for handcuff buddy which is Jeff's nickname. WHY does Brittany use his last name and "(hcb)ilu" (ilu = i love you, in case you didn't know) …

I don't think anyone WANTS Brittany to be involved with this. Everyone wants her to come home safe.. but you need to look at all possibilities here.

How sad that this 12 year old was already presenting herself as an older person with photos showing cleavage for heaven sake – and long dangling earrings.

At 12 she – should still be a little girl! Parents don’t encourage your girls to grow up so fast. They really are not ready to handle all that comes with that territory. In the end, as adults, they’ll thank you for putting on the brakes when the train was about to run away and end in a wreck.

I know that this little girl was brain washed by Easley. I also know that her mom is probably dead because she figured out what was going on and confronted him. I can guarantee you he has told the girl some lie about how her mom died and who knows what she thinks now. When she is found, extensive counseling and alot of family love will be needed. I know all this because, I had a similar situation but mine ended better, my husband is now in Jail for the next 32 years. The story, touches me more than anyone could know. I’m also a nurse. My dtr was also 12 and my husband is now 32. I know her mom is looking down from heaven right now wanting him to be caught and wanting Brittney to escape. God I pray she will and he will get the hell the deserves.

#1, are you joking … call it a hunch.

Police are calling him a POI, I am just cutting to the case.

They are also not calling him a POS, however, I am as well. ;-)

Margie, my feelings too, but sadly I feel the mother took too long to come around in this case/admit to herself the truth.

Relatives and neighbors had voiced concern over behavior observed between Easley and her daughter. Thanksgiving an aunt I believe confronted Tina about contact she had witnessed between the two and Tina replied he was on his way out. But why still there at all then On Dec 3rd?

My hope is he didn’t manipulate this child so well she was involved in a plan to “be together forever”. They did use Tina’s credit card Friday night at Walmart in West-end Salem which is basically in sight of the exit to I-81. This means they got a LARGE head-start from Friday night to Monday morning before the flag was officially raised. (local papers say the trail has gone cold from Walmart)

worst part is the police DID go to the house Sunday first day Tina didn’t show for work, but since her car wasn’t there an no one answered, they couldn’t just break in. they had to leave. So Monday 2nd day she doesn’t show two co-workers went to check on her (one had a key) and apparently found her and called police.

Around same time, the school was trying to contact Tina for Brittany’s absence and a family friend in her home-town area (Martinsville I think) had called police in Roanoke asking for a well-check. This friend was told at the time police are already on their way. Imagine how that felt?

Whatever happens going forward this family is forever changed.

Don’t rule out the father as a suspect. He could have killed all three of them. Just because you’re a police officer, does not mean you can’t be a murderer.
