Melissa Huckaby, a 28 year old Sunday school teacher has been arrested in the murder of 8 year old Sandra Cantu. Melissa Huckaby was arrested at approximately 2:00 am EST on suspicion of kidnapping and murder of Sandra Cantu.

Police believe that Melissa Huckaby murdered Sandra Cantu before the young 8 year old girl’s mother reported her missing. Melissa Huckaby was a neighbor whose own daughter was one of Sandra’s playmates.
Police have not yet stated a motive as to why Huckaby would have murdered the 8 year old girl, but stated that there were inconsistencies in the story that she had provided to investigators. Melissa Huckaby lives with her grandparents in the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park and is a Sunday school teacher at the nearby Clover Road Baptist Church, where her grandfather, Lane Lawless, is the pastor. Police would not reveal what led to Huckaby’s arrest, but said it followed questioning. They did not offer a possible motive.
Huckaby lived in the same mobile home park as Sandra’s family, and Sandra was friends with Huckaby’s daughter, Sheneman said.
Check out the video of a recent interview with Melissa Huckaby and what she told the media. Obviously these comments conflicted with what she told authorities. She claimed she provided a hand written note found in front of Cantu’s home to police.
Just yesterday it was reported that an arrest was imminent as Tracy Police Sergeant Tony Sheneman stated they are narrowing their investigation in one direction.

Blink thanks for the information. How about some investigative background into Huckaby? Can you give us some detailed information on the previous charge(s)? The media has not given the details.
What do you think about this statement, “We have information that Sandra, by the time she was reported missing to us, that she probably had already been murdered,” said Thiessen? Police covering their backsides for not jumping right about or as an answer to Huckaby’s statement about the note not being followed up on?

will try to help with the confusion…(yeah, pun intended :>). the note was placed at the memorial, so the police have nothing to worry about as far as not following up. Don’t forget they had commented they were headed “in the right direction” before the note was even left.
Read an article (searched 2 hrs this morning, who knows which one) that indicated Melissa admit to leaving the note. Maybe in last night’s/early this morning’s interrogation?
My fear is that man (williams?) is co-conspirator. (did spell that right?)
I also viewed a myspace link via Blink (so glad SM and Blink are working together)…and Melissa’s myspace has her mood set to crazy. How she got her granddad to let her be Sunday School teacher is beyond me UNLESS she is (like Casey/Joran) leading dbl lives to the public with only the closest co-horts knowing better…who are also as guilty.
Locals in Tracy say the grandfather, Lawless, church has been closed for years and he attends another Baptist church in town where Huckaby volunteered also. The fact that Huckaby had keys to enter the church where the police were focused and removed a folding bed are rather disturbing ‘tells’.
Locals are adamant in that she is not a Sunday school teacher and are infuriated her previous ‘drugging of a 7-year old neighbor’ investigation ended with the police questioning her after the incident.
The current case investigators have requested that file from the department.
Someone made a comment about this being only the beginning of the unravelling of something very bad. Melissa behaves as though she is suffering from disassociative personality disorder or something. She has to be very disturbed and I have an eerie feeling that as bad as this is, there is much more to this horror than we have seen.
I am interested the church setting. and the fact that Melissa’s grandfather, lane lawless presides over the church where Melissa killed Sandra. It is my suspicion that lane molested Melissa in this same church when Melissa was Sandra’s age. And Melissa is driven to recreate the scene in some way and take control in this dark way new way. The first thing Sandra said in that weird cell phone interview was my grandfather had nothing to do with this, — i suspect that is the root of all of this — her covering for her grandfather back then — led to her turning into this monster now.
apparently there was another instance of her drugging a young girl, of course it would be something to find out if she hurt that girl in any way while she was drugged.
I really wonder how Melissa killed Sandra. she must have taken her to the church with this purpose and then “done it quickly” but i wonder in what manner – and if it was ritualistic.
I’d put money on that her grandfather hurt her in this same way — 20 years ago. i want to know more about the grandfather.

I have a feeling there is ALOT more behind this TRAGEDY. Maybe far-fetched, but I sure hope there is no “copy cat” scenario happening here from someone keeping up with the casey anthony story, although there seems to be good, believable theories on here regarding the “why”. Child killers….fair trial my arse!!!
I’ll re-phrase….child killers do not deserve any kind of defense that defend what they did, nor do they deserve any kind of special treatment. Let there be consequences to those who commit any crime against a child.

There was probably not much wrong with Melissa Huckaby mentally until the community mental health system got a hold of her from her shoplifting conviction. She was diagnosed with depression (probably b/c her husband abandoned her and their child and never paid support.) She should have been diagnosed with poverty. At the time of the crime she had in her possession prescriptions that were prescribed to her for paroxetine, aprazolam, benzodiazapine, Xanax, Adderall, and others, in addition, she was using her grandmother’s oxycodin. Even one of these drugs alone may cause insanity, and per her comments, it doesn’t seem like she actually remembered what she did, at least she didn’t know why. For examples of other manufactured lunatics, there is Kevin Underwood, who, on taking Lexapro killed a neighbor girl with the intention of eating her, Alyssa Bustamante, a 15 year old girl who killed her 9 year old neighbor after being on Prozac for 2 years, the VA Tech shooter withdrawing from antidepressants, and the Columbine shooters on court ordered antidepressants. Doctors see you for about 15 minutes before prescribing these mind altering drugs, they operate like people who have had numerous and substanital head injuries. But it is unknown whether these were all prescribed to Melissa legitimately or if she went around to numerous doctors not telling them about the other drugs. (Like Michael Jackson.)Comments
