Police spokesman Steve Frady issued a one-sentence news release announcing a news conference at 10:30 a.m. today. He would not say whether the suspect was arrested in Reno or elsewhere.

19 year old Brianna Denison disappeared January 20, 2008 and whose body was later found in a field in South Reno on February 15, 2008. At the time of the recovery police stated they had found DNA evidence at the scene of the crime that they say links the suspect to other sexual assaults near the UNR campus.

Police said they recovered DNA evidence at the scene that would link a suspect to the crime. The DNA samples also linked Denison’s killer to three other sexually related attacks on women at or near UNR from October to December 2007

so many innocent men offered up dna samples to help solve this case. i don’t understand what took so long…

i certainly hope his sample is checked against any unsolved sex crimes in northern california as well.

omg… he’s only lived at this location for 3 years. i wonder if he’s from the reno area or if he’s moved from some other location. no telling how long he’s been assaulting women.

How did he enter the house to get access to the girl? Did he walk in or break in?

    5. txchic on November 26th, 2008 2:50 pm

i was under the impression that the sliding glass door was unlocked. he’s used different methods for getting different women including an attempted break in the same night at the home of a woman that he had previously assaulted. what a slime.

Biela’s father: ‘Why did he do this to this lady?’
      BY MARTHA BELLISLE • mbellisle@rgj.com • November 26, 2008

12:05 p.m.The father of James Michael Biela said he hasn’t talked with his son for years, but said he was upset to hear the news about the arrest.

“I did not do this, he did, and now he’s going to have to suffer for it,” Joe Biela said this morning in a telephone interview. “The cops have evidence.”

Biela said he moved his five children to Reno from Chicago in 1990. His wife remarried, and moved to Spokane, Washington, he said.

Biela has two brothers, Joe, who died, and Jeffrey, and two sisters, Kim and Cristy, he said.

“I came to Reno to find a job,” Biela said, adding that he is now disabled and can’t work.

He said his sons rarely visit him.

“A couple of years ago he comes here with his girlfriend and baby and says everything is OK,” Biela said. “But it wasn’t.”

“Why did he do this to this lady?” he asked.

11:40 a.m. — Washoe County Sheriff’s detectives are digging in the backyard of a residence where Brianna Denison murder suspect James Biela lived.

A Reno Gazette-Journal reporter watched detectives digging in the backyard at the home on Allegrini Drive in Wingfield Springs, but detectives declined to comment on the details of their search.

      – Staff Report

      ————————————————————————————-

11:15 p.m. — James Michael Biela was arrested in 2002 for threatening his former girlfriend’s neighbor with a knife, and the girlfriend filed a protection order against him, but he was never served, according to court documents.

He was originally charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon for the July 12, 2002 attack, but the charged was dropped to “simple assault” — a misdemeanor, and he pleaded guilty, according to court records.

He was sentenced to DUI school and ordered to have no contact with the victim for one year.

According to the TPO, Biela’s former girlfriend, Angie Carlomagno split up with him in June 2002, after seeing him for four months, and he continued to confront her.
On July 11, 2002, Carlomagno said he went to her house drunk, and ran over her and her neighbor’s mailboxes.

“He had a knife and came into my house without consent,” she said. “He kicked my dog and grabbed me. The police came and a report was made.”

The criminal complaint said that when Biela arrived at her house, she yelled at him to leave, and took a beer from his hand and dumped it out. While they argued, her neighbor, Sukhjit Singh, came to the side of the house and tried to pull Carlomagno in, the complaint said.

At that point, “Biela pulled a knife from a sheath on his belt on his right side and made a swinging motion toward Singh with his knife,” the complaint said. “Singh said hew as going to call the police,” and Biela left.

During the month after the complaint and TPO was filed, Biela left long phone messages on Carlomagno’s phone, she said, and tried to reach her at work.

And then on Sept. 6, 2002, Biela walked up to her at the Silver Peak Brewing Company and said he wanted to talk, the TPO said. She declined, and he began to fight with her boyfriend, the TPO said. He yelled obscenities about her in front of the restaurant, she said, and he was “kicked out.”

She was granted the TPO, but attempts by police to serve Biela were unsuccessful.

10:35 a.m. — Someone in the community left a tip with Secret Witness saying that James Michael Biela may have been involved in the murder of Brianna Denison, according to the affidavit for his arrest warrant.

Following that tip, Reno police Detective Adam Wygnanski met with Biela, but he declined to give a DNA sample. He also said that his girlfriend, Carleen Harmon, could provide an alibi for him during the time of Denison’s disappearance, the affidavit said.

Harmon was interviewed and said she had a son with Biela, but said “she could not account for his whereabouts on the early morning hours of either Dec. 16, 2007 or Jan. 20, 2008,” the affidavit said.

She also said she and Biela has “a tumultuous romantic relationship” and it was common for him to leave for days.

She said he moved to Washington between March and September for work, and sold his Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck before he left.

While visiting him there, she said she found a “petite sized women’s thong style underwear/panties inside his vehicle,” the affidavit said. She said she confronted him, and he told them he had stolen them from a laundromat in Washington.

Harmon provided a DNA reference sample from her 4-year-old son to be compared with DNA evidence found during the investigation.

The Washoe County Crime Lab matched the sample with Biela.

The door was left unlocked! At night! For anyone and everyone to open!

Does any of us know what comes out at night?

Even in the very communities where we live?

I don’t and I don’t care to know, unless I’m carrying some heft in my hand.

      Lesson learned???

      LOCK YOUR DOORS.

And you have to teach your kids to LOCK THE DAMNED DOORS. IN THE DAYTIME and at NIGHT. House doors, car doors, bathroom doors, etc. etc.

Scum is opportunistic and it’s everywhere.

      Just another thought.

A trial will go forward, despite the genetic match. He’ll be found guilty. Then, real justice will take place. He can look forward to the day when he’ll know what it’s like to be raped. And I’m sure, more than once, by more than one. That, my fellow Monkeys, will be true justice.

This f(edit)er should rot in f(edit)ing jail for the rest of his life f(edit)ing scum bag piece of s(edit)t!!!!!!!
      RIP Brianna Denison

The thing I don’t understand about you people… Why does everyone who does something horrible like this have to “rott” in jail??? I for one truely believe in Eye-4-An-Eye!! This bastard should suffer every last little bit that Brianna suffered, all the torture, every last minute of pain and agony she had to have felt… Make him know how she felt as she was dying then let him burn in hell. I don’t think people of his kind should be shown any kind of mercy because he damn well didn’t show Brianna any!! A lot of you may think that’s cruel and unusual punishment but think about it… If he gets life without parol… All of you will be paying for him to live for the rest of his life. They say it take 1.5 million dollars an inmate per year for them to live and that comes from guess who… You… The tax payers!! Or let’s say he gets the death penalty… Well alright then, kill the fucker, but if you think my idea was cruel just look at how the government does it! They inject the person first with a medicine that pretty much paralyzes the whole body, then the 2nd injection stops the lungs so they lay there unable to breath but you don’t notice because they are paralyzed. The 3rd injection stops the heart… Boom… He’s dead. So ya, that’s kind of cruel in my opinion so why not kill him the way he killed her? I think when the time comes for his trial, as many of you who actually cared for and about Brianna, you should go and stand up for her. Be her voice and bring her the justice she deserves. Bring Brianna Justice!!!
