Body of 12 Year Old Brooke Bennett Found Dead Near the Home of Her Uncle Michael Jacques

There is sad news tonight out of the state of Vermont. The body of 12 year old Brooke Bennett was found dead at approximately 4:45 EDT. The police called the death “clearly suspicious” but declined to give details before a planned briefing Thursday morning. The body of a missing 12 year old Brooke Bennett was found hours after documents surfaced that accused her uncle of planning to initiate her into a child sex ring.

Earlier Wednesday, in an affidavit unsealed in U.S. District Court in Burlington, the FBI said an unidentified 14-year-old girl told investigators she was present on June 25 when Jacques, 42, tricked Bennett into thinking she was going to a party and took her to his Randolph home to be initiated into a sex ring.

The girl said she was led to believe the 12-year-old “would have sex with adult males” during the initiation.

The teenager said she and Bennett watched television for a while before Jacques told her to leave and took his niece upstairs. The witness said she left the house with her boyfriend and didn’t see Bennett again.

Rest in peace Brooke, from all that we have heard with arrests and sick behavior in this family … Brooke is finally at peace and safe.

BETHEL, Vt. – The body of a missing 12-year-old whose uncle allegedly planned to force her into a sex ring the day she disappeared was found Wednesday in Randolph, not far from his house.

State Police Director Col. James Baker said Brooke Bennett’s body was found about 4:45 p.m. and her family had been notified.

The uncle, Michael Jacques, has been in custody since Sunday on charges of aggravated sexual assault against a different underage girl. He has pleaded not guilty.

Brooke Bennett’s body was found a few miles from the home of her uncle, Michael Jacques who was arrested on June 29, 2008 and charged with the sexual assault of another minor. Michael Jacques was the last person seen with Brooke Bennett on June 25 prior to her disappearance.

According to an affidavit, Michael Jacques planned to force Brooke into a sex ring.

As we have always said, once a sex offender … always a sex offender and there is no such thing as a one time rapist.

Court Papers: Uncle Brought Brooke Home for Sex

This is the same uncle that the State of Vermont had previously arrested for sexual assault on a minor and was a registered sex offender. But some how in Vermont’s infinite wisdom, he was un-supervised. When will people learn that sex offenders cannot be cured. Well, there is one cure.

New information revealed in court papers indicates her uncle did not leave her there. According to the juvenile who was with them, they took Brooke to Jacques’ Randolph home. They told her she was going to a party, but the juvenile told police she was actually being taken into a secret program called “Breckenridge,” where she’d be having sex with adult males– just as the other juvenile had been doing for the past five years, with Jacques as her “trainer.” That juvenile left the house after Jacques took Brooke upstairs — and never saw her again.

The story that Brooke may have been meeting someone she met on the online networking site MySpace– police say Jacques made that up. He showed police a posting made sometime after midnight June 25– the day she disappeared.

UPDATE I: More than 300 people are gathered to mourn Brooke

About 300 people gathered Wednesday night to mourn the death of 12-year-old Brooke Bennett, whose body was found near her uncle’s home a week after she had disappeared.

The gathering was originally organized as a candlelight vigil for Brooke’s safe return. Authorities found her dead about 4:45 p.m.

At the gathering, people hugged each other around the town gazebo, lit candles and sang “Amazing Grace.”

“We must realize in our community, oh God, that we are not this horrible act, that this horrible act happened to this community,” said the Rev. Robin Junker, associate pastor of the Bethany United Church of Christ in Randolph. “Bennett

UPDATE II: MySpace page used in cover-up

Police say Gagnon, 40, lives in Texas but often visited Vermont. According to the affidavit, he told police he accessed Brooke’s MySpace page from a laptop computer at his home in San Antonio after getting login information from Jacques.

Police said they have evidence that postings to the account were altered to make it appear that Brooke had discussed a secret rendezvous with someone identified as “Skittlemeup” shortly before she disappeared.

Gagnon also told police he had downloaded child pornography onto the laptop, according to the affidavit.

Authorities said Gagnon was on a regular visit to Vermont from Texas when he was arrested Monday.

What the hell is wrong with these people??????
Children being abused is running rampant all over this country. Why would a sex offender UNCLE be allowed to have any close contact with her? AND WHY THE HECK would a step father who was also a sex offender even be considered as a husband by her mother? I think sex offenders should all live in one town out in the desert and not be allowed to have contact with anyone else (kind of like a concentration camp) Pray for the people of this country and others, because if this type of behavior keeps up we are bound for self destruction.

Once again we are presented with a case where the person responsible for the murder was the last person known seen with the victim.

Its all to familiar a scenario.

On a personal note I would like to tell the state of VT and its law makers to go F#@$ themselves with their lax attitude on sex offenders.

Thank you the liberal bastion of VERMONT for allowing sex offenders to walk around un-supervised. What, you thought this sick freak was cured?

I’m sorry but I have to disagree with the supreme court. We need the death penalty for people like this.

I’ve posted on earlier threads, but am too heartsick to say anything more.

Brooke, amidst the breathtaking beauty of Vermont’s landscape you encountered the depravity of human beings to a degree that few of us even can imagine. Now your sufferings are over.

I hope that the happy times of your life outweighed the evil that forced itself upon you.
This probably sounds sappy, but I don’t know how else to put it. You were far too young to realize the hopelessness or the resignation that comes upon many of us as we age … you were on the verge of beginning your life when you were robbed of it.

      May you rest in peace.

And may the suffering of those involved begin now, and be intense … intense … and more intense. May what they call their lives be a source of misery … and may they not manage to see their natural lifespan.

Hanging, truly, is too good for them.

    6. richard on July 2nd, 2008 10:03 pm

I do want to point out one thing, though, about Jacques. On the earlier thread I posted some info about his “punishment” for the kidnapping and rape of a girl, 18, who he knew from his job.

He and a friend got her drunk, then he (apparently on his own at this point) handcuffed and gagged her, and assaulted her over the period of four hours.

      His punishment?

SIX years in jail … and of that time, one and a half years were waived for his “good behavior.”

If this isn’t a sick commentary itself, I don’t know what else could be.

      #4 AGREED!!!

Vermont is the new Thailand. Its a sex offenders paradise as they know there are no tough laws and the bleeding heart liberals who have taken over the state think they can rehabilitate these animals.

Guess what … Uncle Mikey graduated the VT sex offender program with honors. While he was taking the course, he was raping the 9 year old.

    8. kevin on July 2nd, 2008 10:35 pm

      May Brooke rest in peace.

I have 3 young daughters and will be writing my elected officials to pass a state law requring castration for juvenile sex offenders.

I hope the members of the Supreme Court sleep well tonight. And, I hope the offender is treated to his due in prison.

Please urge your representative in congress to push thru and vote for S. 1738.
Combating Child Exploitation Act of 2007:
A bill to establish a Special Counsel for Child Exploitation Prevention and Interdiction within the Office of the Deputy Attorney General, to improve the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, to increase resources for regional computer forensic labs, and to make other improvements to increase the ability of law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute predators.

fyi – this bill was introduced in june 2007 and still hasn’t come up for a vote. Any chance of a politician getting off their ass and fast tracking this one?

I am a Vermonter, although it is at times such as this where I am ashamed to admit it. I have followed this all week, and broke down with the news this evening. It is not only the state that is at such staggering fault here. This is the second time in as many years that I’ve had to question the logic of the parent(s) of a victim. Last year it came to light that a little girl all of 6 years old was being sexually assaulted on a daily basis by two previously convicted sickos that were “cohabitating” with her in her parents’ trailer. One of them had been caught acting “suspiciously” by locking himself in the little girls room with her at night while everyone was supposed to be sleeping. They reported the incident but proceeded to invite him BACK to stay in the house after a lame investigation (interviewing the 6 year old), where he continued his demented filth, and invited an acquaintance to do so as well. I wholeheartedly believe two things: There are far too many parents out there who have been blessed with children that they do not deserve, and that pedophiles (sick, twisted, repulsive blights on humanity) can NOT be rehabilitated. Tougher laws are needed, not today, not tomorrow, but last week, when beautiful, sweet Brooke Bennett was vibrant, alive, and enjoying life as a 12 year old girl. NO mercy, NO second chances, first offense is your last, your perversion gets you life without the possibility of ever tasting freedom again, or death, period. In the case of Michael Jacques I hope it is the latter, in a slow, excrutiating manner.

    11. bob on July 3rd, 2008 2:34 am

It may never come to light, but I won’t be surprised if powerful business and political leaders in Vermont patronized Breckenridge.

    12. Emmy on July 3rd, 2008 2:48 am

check out Vermont’s sex offender registry. Uncle Mike is listed as “No longer supervised for sexual crime.” He has a prior conviction for gross sexual assault and kidnapping. No supervision?????

    13. Brenda on July 3rd, 2008 4:08 am

We have lost our moral compass in America for the most part.

The mother needs to be in jail with her perv husband. I read where she “cannot believe her dear hubby would do such a thing and “hopes the community would continue to support her”. HUH?? How about I lost a beautiful daughter because I was stupid enough to marry a perv! How about I am so sorry I turned my head the other direction and ignored what was going on in front of me concerning my own husband?

No, she is more concerned about herself and stupid enough to make it clear. So, a selfish mom marries a perv and brings him into the household with an innocent daughter already there. That was the beginning of the end for poor Brooke.

    14. Brandon on July 3rd, 2008 4:50 am

And yet another example of a sex offender who has previously been tried and convicted, does his time in jail, and repeats his sick actions when he becomes a free man.

To the people that were involved in Brooke’s death: I truly hope you suffer in the most cruel and twisted ways you can be doomed to suffer through. No more of these useless “classes” for sex offenders (what kind of a joke is that anyway?). I will always spend my days hoping that these sick people endure pain in every possible way that it can be endured. NOTHING is too harsh for these pathetic low lifes.

To Brooke: It breaks my heart when I think of your life being cut short at such a young age. You NEVER deserved anything like this at all, but now you are in a place where there is no more pain for you to endure. You can now live in a world that is as beautiful as you are, and to top it all off, you are in good hands with our Lord.

      Rest In Peace Brooke Bennett

#2 & #4— I’m right there with you! This story is heartbreaking….ENRAGING how lax VT laws are against sex offenders.

#1 points out ~~~~~~~> Why would a sex offender UNCLE be allowed to have any close contact with her? AND WHY THE HECK would a step father who was also a sex offender even be considered as a husband by her mother????????????

Those also are the first questions which popped into my mind upon viewing the news. WHAT ARE YOU F’N KIDDING ME, PEOPLE ????????????????????? Your shock turns to rage by the time you read all the facts surrounding this case. I am so mad!

Lastly, in response to #9 -Yoyo’s question..

Re: To vote for S. 1738.
Combating Child Exploitation Act of 2007…..he asks…”Any chance of a politician getting off their ass and fast tracking this one?” Do the math, looks grim. As he also pointed out- the bill hasn’t even come up for voting yet & was last introduced in 7/2007.

ONCE AGAIN THE OVERALL RANT/RAGE: WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE/CONGRESS RUNNING OUR COUNTRY??????????? All the red tape and bureacracy….wish a group of politicians would get off their asses and push this forward.

SEX OFFENDERS/REPEAT SEX OFFENDERS…We have TWO words for you: DEATH SENTENCE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

((((Scum of the world, lumped in with losers like JVDS & Kalpoes. Ugh. )))

Brooke Bennett- Rest in Peace, Darling. Our girl Nat is up there with you and she has a shoulder to cry on, a hug to embrace you with.

[...] The result of Vermont’s lack of laws, Vermont’s caring to protect children or any real understanding of child predators … Brooke Bennett is dead and never had a chance. Disturbing details emerge in the Brooke Bennett case; however, this is not the first time we have heard such heinous stories out of Vermont when it comes to child exploitation and sexual assault. In the case of Brooke Bennett, all of the above and include her murder. [...]

    17. Susy Q on July 3rd, 2008 8:18 am

Not long ago I was unsure of the death penalty for child sex offenders….thought it might make the perps more likely to kill their victims….well…NO MORE ! ! ! ! and no lethal injection… That is too kind…How about something like…hot sun…warm honey …. hungry ants…eat up ya’ll…

    18. CMP on July 3rd, 2008 9:05 am

My immediate thought was also, WHY on EARTH would the mother let the KNOWN SEX OFFENDER UNCLE anywhere near her daughter? And she was MARRIED to another sex offender? Who ARE these people?

Yes, the law should be changed to put stricter penalties on sex offenders but this girl would NOT be dead now if her mother had done her job and protected her child! Support the family? Feel sorry for them? Sorry lady, not me, you belong in jail with the rest of your sick family. Brooke is probably well out of it – just a shame that a lovely young girl had to suffer growing up in that environment.

    19. brie. on July 3rd, 2008 10:36 am

Knowing what this uncle was about how could anyone allow him near their child….don’t you even know where your 12 year daughter is, what she is doing and who she is with….now Brooke is gone….murdered

Are these sick parents benefiting from all of this??

And what about the 14 yr old friend who has been having sex with him since she was 9….how could a 9 yr old even mentally handle what was happening to her…..what is wrong with these parents and how do these predators gain access to their children repeatedly….what do they do open the door and let them in….the police need to bring this family in and investigate how this came about….

    20. CMP on July 3rd, 2008 11:11 am

Just so everyone is aware, the death penalty is being considered at this point. Too little too late for Brooke but at least this creep may get what he deserves. Although being raped against his will by other men in jail seems more fitting for the crime.

    21. Angry on July 3rd, 2008 11:24 am

Once convicted but before Jacques is locked up and/or killed, why can’t he be forced to spend time in stocks in a public space or at least walked down the Main Street in Randolph or Braintree to be sneered at. (Unfortunately stocks are still considered “cruel and unusual punishment”, but perhaps the State Legislature could pass a law exempting them.)

    22. sha on July 3rd, 2008 11:24 am

I am so sorry for what happened to Brook an innocent young lady that had so much life to live. I don’t understand how Brooke’s mom would not only allow her daughter to be exposed to an uncle who I am sure knew was a sex offender, but a stepfather too. Where was her mother and is she so hard up for a man that she would expose her child to these types of people. Bless you Brooke.

    23. sha on July 3rd, 2008 11:27 am

I forgot to add this that uncle if found guilty should recieve the death penalty, and that stepfather should be locked away for life. If the mother has any other children they should be removed for their safety. America has to do a better job of protecting our children.

    24. brie. on July 3rd, 2008 1:03 pm

Should Brooke’s sister even be living in that house…..seems like the mother has a thing about allowing sex offenders in the family’s daily life…..she didn’t hesitate at all to say she was suspicious about the uncle…

And what about this uncle….CNN interviewed Brook’s father and he said this guy is married and has children of his own….what about his children are they involved in this sex ring….and what about Brook’s aunt, can’t tell me she doesn’t know what’s going on….especially in her own house!!!

    25. brie. on July 3rd, 2008 3:56 pm

I doubt if the mother ever told her daughters about their stepfather or anyone ever told them about their uncle…but what about the father couldn’t he of done something…permitting your daughter to see her stepfather, a sex offender and her uncle, a sex offender….he wasn’t very forceful on the interview with Nancy Grace, so I doubt if he was very forceful with the upbringing of his daughter and her association with these rapists… I realize Brooke lived with her mother but a father has rights too….this whole thing really stinks to me…..

I live in Randolph =. Even though i didnt know brook it is such a small town that you deff see everybody at least 5 times while liveing here. I worked at the high school here in randolph and have had a few run ins with brooks sister Savanah. Just looking at the sister you would have no idea what kind of family setting she was around. Savanah is a very smart and energetic young lady, not to mention funny. I wouldnt have ever guesed the hurtful reality her family member(s) took part in. I do beleive he deserves to die and i think that Brookes father Jim should do the honors. I think he should be able to dispose of him in any way he wishes, even though we all know that it wont bring brool back it will deff give some closure do this horrific crime. I went to the Calling hours for Brooke last night and it was an open casket. For an7yone who has read up on the Brekenridge rules “if you fail you get your throat cut. And thats what he did. This man needs to get raped and tortured for the rest of his pathetic existance!!!
