Aruban Tourism … Right From AHATA Rob Smith’s Mouth … “Helpfulness doesn’t mean that you must take up a submissive position”

Welcome to Aruba, One Happy Island … where hospitality and being helpful Submissiveis looked upon as being submissive. Aruba, how do you really feel about tourists who come to your island? A better question is, tourists … how do you feel spending your hard earned money and being looked upon as a burden? Just when you thought you have heard it all.

Ever wonder what is really wrong with Aruban tourism? If one ever wondered why such a callus attitude was taken following the disappearance of Natalee Holloway and the almost blaming of the victim and her family for the disappearance rather than holding the criminals responsible for the obvious crime that occurred. One needs to take a look at the following to understand. The following comments wins the WTF moment of the week. What a shocker that it comes from Aruba and has to do with tourism.

… there are sufficient possibilities to move on financially as well as professionally.  The most important message of Ahata is that Arubans distinguish themselves by their hospitality and that the passion to be helpful must be stirred again.  “Helpfulness doesn’t mean that you must take up a submissive position” (Rob Smith)

Submissive position??? What??? People in Aruba think that being hospitable and helpful is being submissive??? OK, wake me because we are obviously in the twilight zone. The comments come from the head of a AHATA, Rob Smith and speak volumes of the attitude that has to exist in Aruba toward tourists. Why else would Rob Smith say it if it was not an issue by many Arubans.

Aruba facade

(Classic Vanderbilt)

So much for the customer always being right. Aruba, a Caribbean island where 70% of their economy is based off of tourism and the head of tourism is telling the Aruban people that being friendly and nice is not submissive. In other words, its not a bad thing and that they won’t be disrespected if they are nice. WOW!!!

Ahata: ‘1000 openings in tourism’ (Amigoe: 5/14/2008)

ORANJESTAD – There are more than 1000 openings in the tourist sector, said Rob Smith, director of Aruba Hotel and Tourism Association (Ahata) yesterday during a press conference about the big career-fair of this Saturday.

This is also one of the reasons why this fair is being organized, said Smith.  Ahata wants to get an idea of how many potential candidates are on the local market.  The organization also wants to get more insight on the number of qualified people that can work but have no job or are overqualified for their current function.  Ahata wants to make the community and especially the youth aware of the fact that the hospitality industry has a lot to offer.

According to Smith, there are sufficient possibilities to move on financially as well as professionally.  The most important message of Ahata is that Arubans distinguish themselves by their hospitality and that the passion to be helpful must be stirred again.  “Helpfulness doesn’t mean that you must take up a submissive position”, emphasized Smith.

The career-fair takes place this Saturday, May 17 in the YMCA in San Nicolas from 10:00 till 18:00.  The next ones will take place in Santa Cruz and Oranjestad.

How do the locals put up with this!
The leadership there is the black hole for idiots.

You can explain this any way you want it. What mr. Smith means is that some Arubans may have a wrong perspective on working in tourism and therefore there are so many job openings. This does not mean Arubans have the wrong attitude towards tourism, those who might consider a job in tourism just need to realise that being helpfull is not the same as being submissive. Crystal clear and not negative in any sense. Don’t twist these words for your own agenda. Aruba loves tourists en tourists love Aruba. Te Aworo !

    3. Carpe on May 15th, 2008 8:01 am

Actually Don, if you read sweet-thang’s well balanced post yesterday… then you know roughly
40 percent of tourists still think that stinking t-biscuit of an island sucks for what they did to the Holloway family!

ARUBA SUCKS – THEY HAVE FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS – AND WILL, UNTIL THEY UNDO THE HARM THEY HAVE DONE TO NATALEE’S FAMILY, by letting the gang-raping, murdering Kalpoe and Vandersloot pigs go.

You Arubian-Dutch morons make me sick! I have seen people as arrogant, and I have seen people as stupid… but never both wrapped up together at the same dang time.

      Enjoy your day, clown.

Very interesting comment from Rob Smith … that friendliness is not the same as being submissive.

Doesn’t all the Aruba tourist propaganda go on and on about how wonderful and friendly the locals are? Now it seems that they have to be exhorted to be their “natural” selves.

I guess that’s why they held demonstrations telling Beth Holloway to go home … because they’re so friendly.

Well, we’ve seen the results of Aruba’s tourism.
They can hire as many people as they want to (I suppose it’s another form of state-subsidized employment, rather than pay them welfare); we will continue to urge people to avoid Aruba.

And you can bet your life on it.

    5. richard on May 15th, 2008 8:19 am

Actually, a re-reading of the article gives the impression that Smith is just throwing BS out there. Any employer will want to draw people to a job fair … among other things, that helps ensure that anybody dissatisfied can be replaced quickly.

He SAYS there are lots of job openings in tourism (which, after all, is the biggest business in Aruba) … does that mean that people are leaving the sector because the drop in tourism means it doesn’t generate any money?

We’ll see how far Smith’s hot air goes.

    6. Don on May 15th, 2008 9:36 am

Yeah right and that’s why they are looking for new people. Employers in Aruban tourism must be dumb. Has it occurred to you that it can also mean that there is no drop in tourism and that still many hands are needed ?

Most people here make it sound like a magic spell , a mantra : Aruba is going down, tourism on Aruba is ruined. Hoping one day the spell may come true. Well wake up, it isn’t. Life goes on.
      Aruba goes on.

      #2 and #6
My guess is that Aruba is seeing a difficulty in staffing these tourism sector jobs and Rob Smith is trying to recruit and ensure service capacity workers for the future. One only needs to go to Aruba and stay at any one of several of the large resorts to see that staff is lacking, and being short staffed pressures the workers that are there, this leads to guest complaints and on and on rolls the snowball. To find the comments I posted below I had only to look among the last three entered at each resort, searching back one finds many many more. P.S. I see Holiday Inn Sunspree has moved down on the Trip Advisor list from #14 to #15.

      FYI….May 8, 2008

      Aruba: Boycott Watch was Right!

Summary: New statements by Aruban Tourism officials proves Boycott Watch caught Aruba in a lie, and that Aruba wanted to cash in on the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.

Boycott Watch was first to break the story that Aruba lied about its tourism numbers, claiming tourism was up despite the boycott of Aruba called after the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. An article in eTurboNews dated January 16, 2008 was just brought to our attention in which an Aruba official clearly indicates Boycott Watch was right all along.

In the article by Hazel Heyer, Aruba’s minister of tourism and transportation, Edison Briesen was quotes saying “We were strongly hit by this incident … In the Caribbean, this is the first time an island has been pounded this long by a single event. It’s been over a year and a half now and the publicity has not ended.”

This is the first time that Aruba has openly admitted their economy was hit hard by the boycott against them. Aruba originally claimed the boycott did nothing but draw attention to Aruba thus increase tourism, but Boycott Watch uncovered the numbers to prove Aruba was severely hurt by the boycott early on in the boycott.

While Aruba now says they expect an increase in tourism revenue because the Natalee Holloway disappearance is out of the news, Boycott Watch stated the Aruba economy hit its low point in a previous article, so the islands economy can only go up anyhow. In the mean time, considering the fact that the Natalee Holloway case is still open and no prosecution has been made despite the Joran Van der Sloot confession, Boycott Watch believes Aruba tourism will not fully recover for a long time. While many college students want to go to Aruba for spring break to take advantage of the lax underage drinking and drug law enforcement there, many parents are still objecting to their kids going to Aruba out of concerns for safety, and many parents won’t go either.

The boycott was started and driven by blogger Michelle Simonsen at the Boycott Aruba–Justice For Natalee blog, and was picked up by the Governor of Alabama among many others. The boycott took on a life of its own, as Americans were upset at Aruba for seemingly doing nothing in the case. Now, many Americans are still upset because even after a passenger-seat confession of Joran Van der Sloot, Aruba has failed to take any action to prosecute anyone in the case.

Briesen appeared arrogant in the interview. When asked about the Holloway family, Briesen stated “We’ve been very cooperative,” something Natalee Holloway’s mother, Beth Holloway-Twitty, surely disagrees with, as demonstrated by the number of times she has been on TV stating her disappointment with the way Aruba has been handling the case and treating her personally.

In the interview, Briesen also echoed a claim by Aruban Tourism officials early in the boycott by saying “more people now know about Aruba.” In both cases, these words were used to claim tourism was up because of free publicity. The only problem with that original claim is that it was a complete lie as evidenced by the fact that Briesen admitted Aruba tourism was hit hard by the boycott. There is, therefore, no reason to believe Briesen now either.

Boycott Watch believes Briesen was attempting to once again bask in self-glorification by taking pride in the media attention garnered by the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. Simply stated, Boycott Watch finds these statements feeding off the probable murder of Natalee Holloway to be repulsive at best.

The most interesting statement by Briesen in the interview was when he stated “…I would not want Aruba to be known in the same way Iraq is known. One reason why we think it has been a hard blow to us.” This is another de facto admission that Aruba feels it was deeply hit by the boycott. Briesen continued: “We are the safest island in the entire western hemisphere. Things like this don’t happen in Aruba.” But it did.

Boycott Watch President Fred Taub responded by saying “If Aruba is the safest island in the entire western hemisphere as Briesen believes, perhaps his own Iraq comparison has merit.”

EVEN MORE REASON TO KEEP THE BOYCOTT ALIVE!!!!
NO JUSTICE FOR NATALEE, NO TOURISTS FOR ARUBA.

@richard & SM: If you could read the Dutch article, you would see there is no BS at all. The English article is way too short too fully understand what Rob Smith means. Like Curacao there are too much people on the island who do not like to work in hotels. Too much people on the island think they need to have a submissive position towards tourists to make their stay enjoyable. Rob states that this is not true. With a new study on the Aruban University called “hospitality & tourism management” he hopes more people will work with tourists.

Clearly Rob Smith has very little clue about good customer service. He needs to do about two years of hard time at a Nordstrom’s store and figure out how to treat people. There is a reason they excel at customer service. It’s an attitude. And submissive has nothing to do with it.

BeachedBlack (#7), I’m sure that Rob Smith will champion our boycott efforts then. After all, Aruba did say a while back that it was going to go after a “more select” kind of tourist, more upscale.

What it seems to get is Colombians.

Anyway, the fewer of us that go there, the more hotel staff there will be to cater to the few who do … and the more conspicuous, and hence more vulnerable, those few will be.

So at least we all agree … boycott Aruba!

(As if your life depended on it.)

    29. richard on May 15th, 2008 9:46 pm

Aruba wants to have a course on tourism and hospitality. Is Paulus vd Scum going to teach?

After all, he’s the Aruban ideal ….

What other reason can there be that he hasn’t even been censured and/or disbarred for lying?

I agree completely. If the Hotel owners do not want their GUESTS to leave the Island RAPED,PREGNANT OR DEAD, it is more DIFFICULT to find employee. A female that that has been DRUGGED,RAPED OR KILLED is not likely to be a repeat guest.

An AHATA official having to encourage his people to not feel like they have to be submissive to be polite to tourists?

      WTF?!?!?!

Is this part of that divide between the haves and have nots only on a greater scale? Is that the attitude that an island that has been kept under the thumb of the Dutch for hundreds of years… under the name of Colonialism? When they are freed, where do they go? Back to a way of life that was, if not totally, atleast partially prohibited. So PLEASE tell me anything, but don’t tell me these Islanders have turned into a bunch of unruly, rude and arrogant savages that think that they can make up their own rules as they go along! Isn’t that what we’ve seen for the past three years? All to save a few undesirables that happen to be on the Politically Corrupt side of the law.

What’s wrong with THAT picture, Aruba? Is that what you have become… renegades without a cause? Defying even yourselves of your livlihoods in order to have your pride? How proud can one be, of such a mixed up mess, as this?

      .

      Hey, Oduber!

Is this how you like your people?

      WHAT?

It’s too submissive to fetch our towels…

But, not too submissive to work in the

sex tourism trade… or is that what they’re

      referring to?

      Please… Do tell:

How do you keep your proud

      and easily embarrassed people

      pleased with being kept

      under your crooked,

      dirty

      and

      bloody

      hand?

      .

      Americans:

      Stay out of Aruba!
      Boycott!

      hello everyone!

      bleached black:
I went to the three links you posed above.. about the hotel service…
arubans are truly rude… some people were treated rather rudely… I

    57. Miss Katie on May 18th, 2008 9:49 am

      p.s
dunno what happened lol I lost my page
well anways reading about the poor service the rudeness of the hotel employees and especialy interesting .. was to hear that people were struggling with their luggage and had to wait in long lines to check out!!!
I am sure this was truly a kodak moment… embedded in their memories for a long time to come….
musty hotel rooms… no towels… and all the lies that they told ….
one was a story about a couple that asked the front desk to wake them in the morning and they lied and said they tried among other lies they told… if any of you missed going to the links that bleachedblack posted please do…..
it gives you insight to the callous attitudes of the workers at the hotel… they truly hate americans……………….

      anyways good to be back

just getting over a horrible cold………

    58. Bob on May 18th, 2008 2:16 pm

FRUSTRATION – it’s all about FRUSTRATION.

Aruban hotel / restaurant / taxicab / small business employees & owners are FRUSTRATED. It’s from a LACK of free spending AMERICAN tourists. Thousands of former and potential NEW vacation visitors are shunning & boycotting Aruba. As a result, lost tourism = lost wages, profits, work, money for Aruba.

On the other hand, former AMERICAN visitors / vacationers are FRUSTRATED because they cannot justify going back to Aruba since it became painfully obvious that Aruban leaders made a mockery of tourist basic expectations, safety concerns, and rights. Many Americans would like to return to Aruba, but won’t until the guilty who had a hand in Natalee Holloway’s death & disappearance to brought to justice and punished according to law.

Until that basic and simple task is completed….EVERYONE will be FRUSTRATED and no one wins. Aruba loses, and tourists lose. It must be the result of too many years of Aruban inbreeding. Too bad.

    59. Maggie on May 18th, 2008 3:44 pm

Carpe , it’s hard to decide which one in that family is the most twisted… None of them seem to have any shame or decency…..I am so sick of hearing their woe is me tour… Last Woe is me tour was a trip on DeVries show..remember that was going to be there last and then they weren’t going to talk about it anymore.. Anita comes on and says she only said Joran went to counseling and that was for one time for gambling. One time lol…. Yet, Paulus was the one who took him out underage May 30, 2005 to a casino underage and left him. Other times previously she spoke, she said it was for other things, like anger. Then the wine throwing.. and now once again she is back in the news with her WOE is me tour..Did Anita bring a painting of 2 black security guards in jail for framing them? They should walk in Natalee and her family’s shoes for one mile. They have not done ONE thing to help find Natalee. LIES and MORE LIES and refuse to cooperate and answer questions about their conversations to either eliminate them or incriminate them. Like why couldn’t one of the 3 last time they were brought in answer….what they meant when they called a girl about 5 hours after Natalee disappeared and said they couldn’t tell what was wrong over the phone, didn’t want to get the girl in trouble… What did they do? All took the fifth.

Was watching Forensic Files a few nights ago, cops went to question a man they suspected of murder. During the questioning, the man began to sweat profusely, clothes were wet, the man had to get up and turn the fan on high on himself. Guess who I thought of? Cop said this was an indicator he was not being honest and was nervous. Anyway later the guy was found guilty of murder.

IF anyone read and seen all we have about the Natalee Holloway case in Aruba , they would see it exactly as it is a cover up.. For a long time wasn’t even for a boycott of Aruba, but as time went on and watched all the lies and disrespect for a mother looking for her daughter and for her family and Natalee….no way could I recommend a place like that, that has such little respect for a human life and a family’s suffering and parades these creeps around.

Reality here’s some reality for you…If you can find ONE PERSON who talked to Natalee after she was with these 3 on May 30, 2005, please call the FBI, I won’t hold my breath, because it ain’t gonna happen.

    60. Maggie on May 18th, 2008 3:55 pm

Even sicker a place that would allow her to go on teaching kids after being caught in so many lies, same as Paulus plus aiding his underage son’s behaviour, still he is a lawyer. Karen Jansen with her statement Paulus told them no body no case just a day or so after Natalee disappeared, the Security guard and the story about them sitting around the pool making up the lies, Anita calling a witness over to the house to ask what they told police, her thick kisses statements. Paulus’s statements about the sleep overs with little girls when they were about 12,, son out drinking and gambling preying on American female tourists all hours underage… bragging about it takes a case of beer to get him drunk. Anita saying her son don’t drink, do drugs or smoke. Like I said no shame or decency it seems.

    61. misskatie on May 18th, 2008 7:16 pm

      maggie
I share your anger and frustration with that idiot family……………..
and I totaly agree about the sweatting I seen that on forensic files
      which I watch faithfully
he is guilty guilty his body language showed it in front of beth
but with all the lies and coverup … they got away with it
      for now!!!!

they enabled jran to be what he is
they are poor pathetic excuses for parents…

will aruba get sick of them and throw them out is my question
      they have cost aruba millions
      are they worth it
will they make it up to aruba
      not

    62. Patti on May 18th, 2008 9:56 pm

I’ll bet Joran was sweating, too.

That’s alot of pressure to put on one’s own son…

      Don’t tell Daddy’s Secrets!

      And, Joran is such a fool;

He’d rather rot in jail or an insane assylum

than to tell the truth about what his father

      did to Natalee.

      .

Personally, I think he had some sort of pre-

arranged kidnap, cage and sell business that

      he ran from the compound.

      .

      What would it be like

to be the son of a

      human trafficker?

      .

      It’d make me feel, disposable…

      .

      Justice for Natalee

      For those that took part
      in the crimes committed
      against her person…

      AND

      For those that took part
      in the cover up…

      Especially, Oduber!

      .

      Boycott Aruba!!!!!!

    63. Patti on May 18th, 2008 10:05 pm

I also think Oduber and his ministers

      know their time is short.

They’re shuffling around as fast as they can…

Oduber, no doubt, will retire in Spain

and, poor Aruba, will pay for the sins

      of their fathers, as well.

      .

      Like Red says,

“You’re either part of the solution,

      or part of the problem…

There is no middle road, not here!”

      .

      Aruba, Boycott!

      Hi Miss Katie

    71. kaye on May 20th, 2008 9:04 am

#62 Patti….i agree with you. Paulus’ involvement is apparent. what i’d like to know is Anita’s involvement in the big scheme of things. and for goodness sake, there are two other VDS children, God help them. Where were these children when things were happening within the VDS compound? Surely these children must know something. they could not live in that house with Joran and his parents da after day and NOT know something. i’m still curious over a supposed comment that the younger one made referring to Natalee being in the bathtub……does anyone know what that was that all about?

    72. Maggie on May 20th, 2008 2:37 pm

      69 MissKatie,

The one I watched was from LuxuryTravel Today and had fake pictures of waterfalls and things that aren’t even in Aruba, to get people to go. Comments after were complaining that many of the pictures weren’t even from Aruba.. Pretty desperate. Another one on YouTube ,,,called Drunk Booty shaking in Aruba.. on a boat or near the water,, One of the girls took her bikini bottom off and was shaking her butt, hanging in the water…both looked drunk.she got back on the boat and put her bikini bottom back on and the other girl poked a cherry down the back of it. and a couple guys with them. Hope every parent of a young daughter watches it.

    73. misskatie on May 27th, 2008 5:57 pm

      I SEEN THAT MAGGIE
FALSE ADVERTISMENT … THEY WILL GO TO ANY LENGTHS TO GET PEOPLE TO TRAVEL TO ARUBA..
I AGREE I HOPE PARENTS SEE IT … MAYBE TEACH THEM MORALS…
