Monkey Business: Man Smuggles Monkey into NYC Under Hat aboard Spirit Airlines

I can’t hear you sir, I have a banana in my ear. Or was it a monkey? Once again truth is stranger than fiction as a man smuggles in a monkey into the US under his hat.. The monkey adventure began in Lima, Peru when the man boarded a Spirit Airlines flight to Fort Lauderdale, FL. After several hours and most likely airline delays, he caught a connecting flight to La Guardia Airport in NYC with his simian side kick under his hat. How could they ever have missed him?

“Other passengers asked the man if he knew he had a monkey on him,” she said.

The monkey spent the remainder of the flight in the man’s seat and behaved well, said Russell, who didn’t know how it skirted customs and security. (Yahoo News)

So much for airline security.

Whats the saying, “if we can stop but one monkey then all the money spent was worth it”?

The 2003 funding includes $57.2 million for 570 new Border Patrol Agents.

The funding increases will support technologies that keep out potential terrorists:

$380 million for the development of Entry Exit information technology for tracking foreigners entering the country and infrastructure upgrades
$45 million for Non-intrusive Inspection Systems including Rail Vehicle and Container Inspection Systems, portal radiation detectors, tool trucks, isotope identifiers, and hand-held acoustic inspection systems
$313 million for the Automated Commercial Environment, including funds for the International Trade Data System-ITDS
The 2003 funding includes $10 million to help fund immigration enforcement needs, including additional staff to investigate and reduce the backlog of more than 300,000 alien fugitives who have been ordered removed or deported from the United States but have failed to comply with the deportation.

security isn’t set up to scan for monkeys.

I do hope everyone understands that while monkeys may be cute, smuggling one in the USA is very dangerous since we don’t know what diseases or insects he might be introducing.

We basically give a pat down to 90 year old grand mothers like they were entering a prison going thru airport security, yet they can’t check under a man’s hat?

      WOW.

Take your shoes and belt off, but keep that over-sized big hat on. Was that a monkey I just heard? Nah, ok you are clear to go …

Better that one innocent monkey get on a plane than some of the people I’ve shared a plane or bus with. Yep, here goes, my statement for animals: Airlines are often not very careful or concerned about the welfare of animals that are flown in crates. I don’t blame the guy for trying to smuggle the little guy onto the plane rather than leaving him behind or checking him in with the luggage. And while that little monkey was flying harmlessly, how many rapists, murderers or drug dealers were crossing our borders? I have to agree, however, that airport security probably should have caught it, but then I’ve seen guys (and girls) with hair that no monkey would be caught dead in, so I suppose it was easy to miss.
