Scared Monkeys Welcomes Richard as Contributing Editor: Discussing his thoughts on Missing Persons

Scared Monkeys asked me to do some occasional articles on the general phenomenon of missing people, and on individual cases.  Needless to say, I’m honored and pleased to do so.  Being asked to do these articles does not imply endorsement of my thoughts on Natalee Holloway or any other missing person case.   I am no expert in this area and make no claim to be one.

Amy_bradley2

Those people who have read my posts in the last two years know that I work with the family of Amy Bradley, missing in the Caribbean since March 1998.  I also do volunteer research for International Cruise Victims, which is dedicated to promoting safety on cruise ships and alerting the public to the difference between the benign image the cruise industry presents and the level of crime that actually exists.  And I have done similar Internet research for the International Safe Travels foundation as time has allowed.

This weekend the world is awaiting the revelation of the fate of Harry Potter and other Harry_Pottercharacters in that series.  People are lined up to buy the last book; enterprising or unscrupulous individuals are competing to release the details of what happens; and the media are prepping us for a full-scale assault on bookstores by fans, money in hand, raging to know who lives and who dies.

I wonder how many of these people will give a thought to the plight of families in the “real” world who want to know the same thing about their loved ones?  Harry Potter is fiction; the agony of these families is not.

According to Crime Library , 2,300 Americans are reported missing each day.  I don’t know if that’s a running total or if it is the number of new cases.  This source also says that 150,000 Americans were reported missing in 1980; the latest figure is 900,000.  To some extent, the higher figure may indicate that more attention is being paid to these people.  But whatever the accurate number may be, multiply it by the grief that any family must feel and be daunted at the thought.

Anyway, exact numbers are not important; the despair of the families is.  These essays are not about me, but I want to share one experience.  I began my interest in this field when Chandra Levy went missing in 2001, a case that gripped the nation then and that remains unsolved.  Before that I had never thought much about missing people; it was something outside of my experience, and had never happened to anyone that I knew.

Chandra_mom

Susan Levy, shown in her Modesto home with a portrait of her daughter Channdra

As I became interested in Chandra’s case, it occurred to me that there must be other missing people as well.  So one Saturday morning I went to the office where I was working and did random Internet searches for missing people.  Within half an hour I had seen more than I ever wanted to; hundreds – hundreds! – of smiling photos were on file, each a life that had value, each a life that may or may not have been ended, each a life that now was shrouded in mystery.  The answers were out there, but I didn’t know them.

One night, soon after, I had a dream that I still don’t like to think about.  In the dream, I realized that I had the power to “find” ten missing people … no idea why it was ten and not another number, but that’s what it was.  I had a great feeling of joy at being able to do this, and started making up a list.   Then I realized that to give ten families the answer they wanted meant to turn down thousands of other families.  It was like those classroom exercises: you have ten people on board a sinking ship, and a boat that can take six.  Who do you save?  Who do you let die?  In this case, what families do you help?  How do you decide?  Whose claim is the greatest?

At that point it was as though I were surrounded by swirling fallen leaves, a familiar image to New Englanders in autumn, as though the spirits of the missing and dead were crying out for attention.  So many fallen leaves; so many desperate spirits; and I could do so little, help so few.  By and by the voices subsided and faded away in a kind of despair, and I woke up with tears in my eyes.

Getting back to the subject, there’s a lot of talk about media partisanship in which missing-person cases get coverage.  The “rich white girl” becomes a national cause, while her female counterparts of other ethnic or economic strata get ignored … not to mention her male counterparts.  Or so the argument goes.  It might be worth noting here that according to Crime Library, somewhat more than half of missing people are male.

I’m willing to concede that life is unfair, and that the media might give certain stories more play than others.  What else is new?  If an athlete or movie star is caught speeding, has a fight, uses drugs or does nothing in particular, he or she gets more media coverage than I do.  If Lindsay Lohan or Sean Penn were to vanish tomorrow, the press would go crazy.  If it happened to me, nobody would know and only a few would care.  So what?

My concern is with what’s left behind, in a way, when someone goes missing.  Whether high or low in the world’s esteem, the family of a missing person must go through a peculiar kind of icy hell, one that probably cannot be realized by anyone not in that situation.  Any such case deserves our sympathy just because we are human, and demands action.  Hence we not only should speak out, we must.

My contact at International Safe Travels tells me that as far as she can find out, there is no one agency of the U.S. government that keeps track of missing people abroad.  There is no master list, as it were.  There is information on Americans who die abroad
(http://travel.state.gov/family/family_issues/death/death_594.html), but no overall data on the missing.  I find this unbelievable.  I’d like to write about it next time.

Scared Monkeys I am an avid reader of your blog, and when I see a pic of a person or child that is missing I make a point to remember it. I really don’t know what else I can do in my remote community to help. If there is a missing person or child here close to my home you can bet I will do everything I can help.

I would like to say THANK YOU for shaming me, because I am a fan of books and happen to like Harry Potter. By the way it may interest you to know that the author of Harry Potter, JK Rowling, has asked all book stores to post pictures of Madeleine Mccann in efforts to help find the girl who went MISSING in Portugal. She has also offered an undisclosed but substantial reward for the Madeleine.

This is the first time i have been either offended or disappointed in on of your postings. But I will be back, because I do care for the missing people if the world.

A Database of Americans ‘missing’ abroad?

Well, its hard to get updates on the domestic cases and often flyers are displayed months after disposition, so I doubt a foreign database would do better.

Many countries declare someone to be ‘missing’ because their Minister of Tourism does not want there to be any drownings or shark attacks. Some of those “missing” from a cruise ship were clearly murdered, but desperate families want to remain hopeful. The database would surely be stuffed with items of low quality: consider all those sightings of Chandra Levy or sightings of Natalee Holloway in a brothel in Venezuela. Consider those idiots who spread rumors about missing persons being kidnapped for organ donation. You really want to stuff a database with all that nonsense? What use would it be?

Glad to see you’ll be writing more Richard……your loyalty to Amy, Natalee and their families aswell as caring about other families of missing persons makes you a hell of a guy in my book!

The Holloways and Bradleys are lucky to have good people like you on board, Richard. A lot of the time- especially with Natalee and Amy- it seems the bad guys won and we can’t touch them. But at least we’re putting up a good fight!

    15. 10061906 on July 22nd, 2007 11:24 pm

I have a philosophy that is fairly simple and straight forward:
Never give in, never give up, never look back. However; in retrospect what makes me think I can actually tell what happened to Natalee when I’m trying to get my own house in order. I’m sorry this is long but it will be awhile before I post again.
Will I give up? Never: Will I give in? Never: Will I forget? Never.
Taking what I have followed over the last two years I will have one more attempt to write a script for what could account for Natalee’s disappearance.
But first we as posters can only assume what happened. Aruba lies and I’m sure there are tons of documentation that will not be released by Beth, Dave or the FBI.
My still nagging question is why Natalee stayed behind while the friends she came with went back to the HI. My opinion is school wise and street dumb.
The psychic on Haunting Evidence said she felt Natalee was being watched (stalked) from the second day she arrived. Didn’t Natalee change rooms the second day?
Beth felt she was being watched while in Natalee’s room. I still feel that originally Natalee’s room had a hidden VHS camera. Peeping Tom’s would be the pimps lesser evil. These tapes are reviewed in the pimp’s clubhouse and a tourist is picked for their game. This could be somewhere around the racquet club since almost all say they go or have met each other there. Or strange as it may sound there is a room available at Carlo and Charlie’s, Lorenzo’s or the infamous Lion’s Den.
My guess since they are all involved with drugs is they meet at Lorenzo’s.
The pimps are fairly spread out so some common ground is needed. Joran, Freddy and Jaime are in Montana. Geoff van Cromvoirt is in Paradera. Deepak and Satish are in Hooiberg. Koen and Sanders are in Malmok. Guido Wever, Andre B and Michael Dompig I’m not sure. Also I’m not so sure there are no other members that are still flying under the radar.
On her trip Natalee was accosted numerous times by Geoff and Joran; and yet I don’t believe any of the other MBHS females were. I don’t recall reading it anywhere in the MBHS depositions. Attempted drug sales but not actually grabbing or being slapped. No other MBHS female needed the MBHS boys to step in. That is why I feel an all out attempt was made on Natalee. Remember Joran said he liked Ruth better. That may have been the one he picked originally but was out voted.
Someone called Joran to get over to C and C’s because this may be our last chance. I’m sure Natalee did not call. Her friends left at 11:00. Paulus picked up Joran and Natalee at 11:00PM. Joran was getting ready to be picked up by Deepak at 11:00. Everything is 11:00PM. There is this one hour; 11:00 to 12:00PM where nothing is documented for Natalee’s activities. Not even in the MBHS depositions. Lee, Ruth and Madison had all left C and C’s so they couldn’t know.
She had $50.00 when she started out; splitting cab fare she may have had $40.00 remaining. Buying a few drinks at those prices she may have had only $20.00 left by 11:00PM or when Joran arrived she may have had no money for cab fare. This made it real convenient for Joran to offer a ride and Natalee to accept. Someone slipped Natalee a “roofi” before she left. Once in Deepak’s car she was further sedated. Deepak stopped off to tell all to head for the House; because they hit the jackpot. Most of the pimps head for Joran’s. Since the only room according to Anita that was not searched was the younger son’s room. Obviously something bad happened to Natalee there. Paulus is informed and Natalee has to be removed. Not only that but any evidence also has to detract from Montana. Deepak, Satish and others leave. Joran and Geoff take Natalee to dispose of her. They load the bloody mattress and Natalee on Geoff’s pickup truck. They try to decide were to take her. They head south towards San Nicolas. There; Geoff gets rid of his shirt and other items that were found there. They take Natalee to the Pet cemetery or one of the abandoned caves. Then they drop off the bloody mattress at Grapefield Beach.
Why the pet cemetery? Joran killed his dog. “Bitch” is a female dog. Bitch; in his book is what Joran calls Natalee. That smirk on his face at the pool says something. Plus there would be too many others involved with sea dumping or cremation.
(my original thought and I have been persuaded since then)
If they find the girl you will get 15 years. Deepak says to Joran.
Fifteen years is the sentence for murder without premeditation.
This would imply that Deepak and Satish were there when Natalee was killed, but not involved with her burial.
Who started the cover up? IMHO it started with Paulus and Van der Straaten and escalated up.
Why the cover up? Because of where it happened, how it happened, the condition of Natalee’s body, they did not want details of the “Game” and how it was played to be made public and there were too may sons of public figures involved with Natalee’s murder, rape and her burial.

Sparrow: I’m not going away. I have about 600 photos and almost 3 inches of downloaded documentation concerning Natalee that I want to review again.
Unfortunately I’m not researching for some novel. I’m just trying to find that one little slip of the tongue by anybody that was involved. There are just so many scenarios that can be assumed. Who knows whether what I am writing is true are false. Nothing will be proven by me sitting 1600 miles away writing what I think could have happened. I have been proven wrong on a couple of issues. There are just so many endings you can write before you hit THE END. I would definitely like to read the second half of Joran’s book. I felt there was some very good insight in the first half.
After all is said and done the premise to this case is:
      Four left C and C’s.
      Three got home.
      Natalee did not make it.
      JK2′S, where is Natalee?
So until I can develop anything different there is no reason to post.
Hey: I’m not giving up…I’ll be reading everyday and if I can help with anything; that I will try to do.

      >”…know that I work with the family of Amy Bradley, missing in the Caribbean since March 1998….”
It seems common that family members want extraordinary search efforts made and are hesitant to face reality. Often family members establish forums wherein software is set to alter text that uses terms such as ‘dead’ or ‘murdered’ Attempts to improve the media situation by linking Amy Bradley to the Natalee Holloway case or vague rumors of the White Slave Trade only show that family members just don’t want to accept realistic assessments of what happened and where it happened but will instead clutch at any straws and want search efforts conducted forever no matter what misallocation of resources is involved. If you truly work for the family of Amy Bradley, then work to get them to accept the fact that whatever happened to her happened on that ship and that whatever method of corpse disposal was used, it was used fairly promptly.

Gosh, I can smell a dirty

Aruban media whore a mile away 26!!!

You mean PROPAGANDA CAMPAIGNS, blog and spam bombs /

Yeah, we don’t have time for that squirrelly s$%it.

We leave that to pompous, raping, tourist murdering Arubans, that refuse to put their criminals (VANDERSLOOTS/KALPOES) in jail under any circumstances, whatsoever.

That kinda of stuff is HOLLOW; it is for people who

      are empty human shells.

People like Nelson O’Duber and his

      ALSO,

Pieces of human sewage, like Jan Van der Straaten,

      Gerold Dompig, and his

gang rapist of a son Michael Dompig! People like JULIA

RENFRO, what more needs to be said about that dish rag

heifer? She gives the blow up sex doll industry a lot

of hope. I was lookin to be positive on that one.

      …and…

People like Joran & Deepak who keep granting interviews

where they actually call Natalee a BITCH. They are such

      intrepid psycopaths,

you can actually track back, and see where they’ve

been documented saying it on the record.

For ex: Joran’s JUNE 2007 DUTCH

STUFF? What would you do if you were in Joran’s Frankenstein

      Shoes?

Me, I’d shut the hell up and be praying my buns off that

I didn’t wind up floating face down in a pond tomorrow.

      Those BURN NATALEE type tactics

are weak, and that is why Aruba has been taking it up

the hooptie for the past two years.

Keep it up the good work… it’s worked so well.

    43. Derek on July 23rd, 2007 7:07 pm

Please explain first, why we are called disgusting.

Amy Bradley, is most likely dead. Could you give me some hope that she is still alive.

I’m not asking for people to FORGET IT AND MOVE ON, but these people are most likely dead. And about this reality issue, no parent will accept their child is dead for a very long time, but they have to keep in mind that their child is most likely dead.

Like I said, sad truth, but that’s usual reality.

Thanks for all the comments, everyone, both pro and con. In a way it’s improper for me to speak out here, but I do want to clarify that I’m not criticizing the Harry Potter books or movies, none of which I’ve read or seen. Obviously they appeal to millions of people worldwide.

I was just wondering how many of the people who were avidly waiting to find out who lived and who died in them (I haven’t bothered to check, myself) gave as much thought or concern that day to the many, many REAL people whose fate is unknown … and whose loved ones want to know, and are suffering from not knowing.

Certainly that observation wasn’t directed at anyone here.

As for Amy Bradley, the sightings that have been reported over the years, including recent ones in which her name was given, and the testimony by authorities that they are almost certain the person whose photographs were shown on that Dr. Phil show is Amy … this is strong evidence.

Carin Jansen charged Paul & Jurine with PREMEDITATED MURDER…..she had to have evidence to make a charge like that.

Carin also charged them with kidnapping, heavy battery, rape and murder.

How can you level charges like that without seeing Natalee’s body?

      YOU CAN”T!

Carin was that you in the rocks area wearing a blue/green T-shirt? Is that where you saw Natalee Carin? Or was it the medical examiner morgue area? Was Natalee taken away in that hearse from the rocks scene?

      Is that true?

Source: Natalee Holloway Died of Drug Overdose
      Friday, July 20, 2007

      Natalee Holloway
Natalee Holloway died from cardiac arrest caused by an accidental drug overdose, a source has told The O’Reilly Factor.

“The Factor has learned from sources we have to protect that Natalee Holloway, the 18-year-old Alabama woman who disappeared two years ago in Aruba, died from cardiac arrest brought on by an overdose of cocaine,” Bill O’Reilly said on his Thursday program.

The theory offered by the source, a top law enforcement official, could not be confirmed independently because Holloway’s body has not been found.

Holloway was vacationing with friends on the Caribbean resort island when she disappeared the night of May 30, 2005.

She was seen leaving a bar with Joran van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers, Deepak and Satish Kalpoe. The brothers were jailed and later released after a judge ruled there was not enough evidence to hold them.

Van der Sloot, a Dutch citizen who has been attending college in the Netherlands, was also jailed and released. He has said he left Holloway alone on a beach after they kissed and he did not harm her.

At least 10 people have been arrested and released without charges. Hundreds more have been questioned.

The Dutch marines, the local coast guard, the FBI, hundreds of volunteers and others have scoured the island’s dunes, beaches and trash dumps for Holloway. Scuba divers and sonar-equipped coast guard ships have also examined the seabed in the unsolved disappearance.

      Richard,
Could you please post a detailed update on the Amy Bradley case? Amy’s case has not gotten enough media attention considering the number of sitings and the likelihood that she is still alive and able to be found. I also don’t understand why the civil suit against Royal Caribbean was scuttled.

      Thanks!!

About the possibility that ALE did find Natalee’s body early on…..

After Aruba did their autopsy they would have to release her body to the FBI. Aruba would not get the last word on cause of death or any other details.

I guess that could be a good reason Aruba didn’t want to admit they found a body. And really, I’m not so sure they didn’t find her.

Their attempts to find her have been superficial at best. They say they have clues -the dump, the ocean- but they are not the ones who check those clues out. They send the family or Tim Miller. Why? Because they know it’s a waste of time because the body has already been found?

Even that massive sand dune search around the CA Lighthouse that ALE did was BS. Did you all know about 50 new police officers were training there that day? THey used it as a training exercise under the guise of finding Natalee based on a tip. If they hadn’t have had to train new cops anyway, I doubt that search would have taken place at all. Opportunists!

And what about the pond search? Didn’t Jossy have something to do with making that happen? As I recall ALE wasn’t the ones who initiated it.

The F16 flyover? At first reported to have been a search for Natalee turns out to have been a mapping flyover? They only used this because it was already going to happen and thought they could just pass it off as looking for Natalee. Opportunists!

What have they really done to look for her?

Oh, they let government employees off half that day. Hmph. I’ll bet that had ulterior motives. Like maybe they didn’t want government employees working that day in case they might overhear something about Natalee being discussed. They’d have to let all the gov’t offices out or else any singular ones they did let out would be too suspicious. I always thought letting gov’t employees out was overkill. (WHat day was that? DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THE DATE? It might be important to when ‘they knew’ something had really might have gone wrong.)

And what about the Dutch? Isn’t that where all the evidence that was found that might have been related to Natalee suddenly ended up NOT having anything to do with her? And then they go re-search the VDS property and the Kalpoe house. What for? To make sure there wasn’t any evidence left that might implicate Holland’s involvement in a coverup?

So you know, on that day when the leak said a body had been found….after(?) which Vanderstraaten said he had seen the evidence that Natalee was dead….maybe she was found then. And wasn’t that just before they were forced to arrest J2K?

But if they did find her then, what could they possibly be hiding that they don’t want the FBI to know about? What would have happened anyway if the FBI had reached different conclusions during an autopsy? Even a bullet hole would not make ALE ‘sure enough’ to charge anyone with the crime. Even if her body had been beaten to a pulp, ALE could still have said they had no real proof who did it. So I don’t see the point in hiding her IF she had been found.

Unless, there is no point and Aruba just didn’t give a shat if Natalee’s body was returned home so they cremated her at the morgue-for which someone would surely get sued- hoping to do what then?….

Does anyone recall what path the story took just after the punks were arrested? Is that when the ‘runaway’ theory began? Is that when the Holloways and Twittys began to be attacked as if Natalee had a rotten home life? Is that when the ‘Natalee is pregnant with Jug’s kid’ story started? Is that when Natalee and her family became the ones to blame? (I’m asking these questions because I don’t have the timeline on these events. If anyone does, please answer!)

So I know initially some callous frosted flake eater and others suggested Natalee would show up….that she must have been still out partying. I don’t include that in any coverup that would have begun AFTER a body was found. Such remarks, insensitive and callous as they are, are often the mindset of small town cops who think all teens are rotten and all families over-react and no family knows their own kid. It’s sick, but these cops don’t want to ‘fall for stuff’ because they are ‘smarter than that’. They let their ego get in the way of getting started.

This brings me to, what if they whole body being found thing was BS? Still ALE passed the buck of finding Natalee to her family and Tim. Maybe they knew Natalee was not dead and had been sold and they are afraid to go in that direction either for self-serving reasons or for fear of ending up decapitated. So they try to say they found a body just to confuse things in that direction, knowing they will just say it was misinformation later. Joran gets arrested and held in a ‘safe’ place. The Kalpoes are let go after the cops are sure they don’t know anything about the ‘sale’. The beach story is made up and lo and behold! The cops take Joran to that area to ‘refresh his memory of that area’ so his story will be more accurate than it might be if he didn’t get to go take a good look and create a solid visual about the area?

I’m really starting to think Natalee may have been sold.

ALE didn’t/isn’t looking too hard because they know she was/is not on the island. And they have/will find a cocaine overdosed body….somewhere.

The end story could read like this….she ran away, got into drugs and ODed and was found ‘somewhere else’ where she had run away to.

If that could be the story they want to tell to end this and let all their perps go free, perhaps Natalee’s body has been or will be found in the USA so Aruba and Holland can get off scott free.

Those letters sent allegedly from Natalee….were postmarked Hot Springs, (don’t know the state) but it was in the USA. Might her body ‘be discovered’ around that area? This would not eliminate the possibility that Natalee had been sold…it would only be a way of returning her to end the case against Arubans.

    59. Vicki on July 24th, 2007 1:13 pm

disgustedmom, heck they could bring her to my house and I would never tell, just as long as we could get her back to alabama….thats all her Mother wants, for her baby to come home. I think we need to go back to Straaten….”I have seen the evidence”…..HOLD HIM RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS STATEMENT….he has seen the evidence, then he has seen Natalee….and just how come nothing has been done about this! Maybe we need to move head strong on Straaten. He has admitted to knowing. So why allow all of this to continue, especially for Beth and Dave? Why doesn’t the Dutch arrest him?

Having travelled the Carribean and observing and asking authorities about tourist behaviour, quite frankly one would say that is common. If the records were released I ask a simple question, do you know how many tourist are left behind at different cruise ports lately? And do you know that drinking liquor till stupor is the major reason, well sun and rum…

I saw Miss Holloway’s mother’s TV show, VANISHED last Monday about the disappearance of Amy Lynn Bradley and it moved me to contact as many churches in the Twin Cities area, tell them about Amy and pray for her and the other adults and children enslaved by these criminals.

If the LORD can rescue the Israelites from the Egyptian slave-masters, we pray that He will rescue the people enslaved by these criminals. And I agree that all ships that come to and depart from this country and it’s holdings should be required to have security cameras in all public areas and all cruise lines should be required to respond to missing persons aboard ship. If we can’t get SEAL Tea 6 in their to rescue the prisoners and take out the criminal element, God is our only hope. We must remember

Matthew 19:26b with God all things are possible.

I am glad to see you are working on this problem, too, and look forward to your messages! God bless you and your mission!
