Fred Thompson Will Run For President, 4th of July Announcement Expected

Fred_ThompsonFred Thompson, the former Tennessee Senator and well know actor, has decided to enter the Presidential campaign on the 4th of July according to those close to his campaign. All I can say is WOO HOO!

Face it folks, the group that is running for President is a weak group. Giuliani is the best of the bunch and he fights to have any gravitas. McCain and Romney are nice guys, but would only get my votes after holding my nose.

But Fred Thompson has the right stuff. He walked away from the Senate and all its sycophantic garbage that McCain thinks of as the be all and end all. He can express in very simple and concise terms complicated ideas, something that Giuliani and Romney are far from able to do. And when it is time to face Hillary or Obama, he carries himself so well that they will look shrill and lightweight compared to him.

Of course, Thompson does not walk on water, he has had a long and illustrious career as a ladies man, has been seen to take a softer approach on the opposition than I would like, and is know to be a bit relaxed in his work ethic.

However, to see his instinctual reactions to Micheal Moore and the garbage he spews, that Paul Harvey would choose him to be his fill in, and his strong stances on immigration while others wilt in the fear of not being politically correct have earned my support for the man.

We had a President that folks mocked as being only an actor and prone to taking naps, but when Ronald Reagan was laid to rest America rose and recognized that he was a great leader. May Fred Thompson have the same mettle.

Thompson, the “Law and Order” star and former U.S. senator from Tennessee, has been publicly coy, even as people close to him have been furiously preparing for a late entry into the wide-open contest. But the advisers said Thompson dropped all pretenses on Tuesday afternoon during a conference call with more than 100 potential donors, each of whom was urged to raise about $50,000.

Thompson’s formal announcement is planned for Nashville. Organizers say the red pickup truck that was a hallmark of Thompson’s first Senate race will begin showing up in Iowa and New Hampshire as an emblem of what they consider his folksy, populist appeal. via Politico.com

One thing is for absolutely, positively certain: While I am a stanch Republican, I will NOT cast a vote for any Republican who in anyway votes (or abstains) on the immigration bill currently in the Senate. It is the worst example of a taxpayer rip-off and ignoring the laws of the USA.

I believe in voting so the candidate that does the best job of undermining and overturning this “piece of sh*t” bill gets my vote – regardless of party.

Maybe there will be Law and Order, afterall.

Just curious…Would you support him for his voting record or his acting ability?

    8. Scared Monkeys on May 31st, 2007 12:17 am

      Kate

I would support him for his politics first, his ability to carry himself second. As Kennedy proved, the man inside the package is not nearly as important as the packaging in todays politics.

Kennedy slept with everything that moved but looked better than Nixon, case closed. Carter was the antithesis of Nixon after Watergate and came into office. Reagan speaks for himself, he carried himself how a President should, the Democrats never had a chance. Bush Sr to Dukakis in the helmet… No question.

Clinton over Bush Sr. or Dole, again no question. Even the scandals in his wake never slowed him down. He looked Presidential after a vomiting Bush.

George Bush facing Kerry or Gore, close elections as they were visibly and on the stump mirror images of each other.

Now to today, looks and demeanor mean a great deal. We are political junkies but our vote counts as much as the person who does not follow politics and see’s glimpses of the candidates during the previews during the commercial breaks of Jerry Springer.

I would bet that Thompson vs McCain vs Giuliani, Thompson would win on sheer charisma and looking Presidential.

Thompson vs Obama or Hillary, same deal. This was to be an election between the wonks … look at the field. Nobody stood out, very much like 1992 when Clinton ran. As long as Thompson does not screw it up and get painted with the Bush brush, he should beat any Democrat for the Presidency.

Again, this is not ideology speaking, but pure political analysis in todays climate. As I said in the post, he fills in for Paul Harvey, so he will have a big chunk of the senior vote. He talks like a regular guy, so he will make inroads into the Reagan Democrats. Thompson also talks to the conservatives and will address the illegal immigration issue, which will carry large parts of the country.

So, it is another long answer to a short question, both. He has the look and the policies to be Presidential.

What’s not to love about Fred? He’s my first choice.

although i’m not a politician lover , i like Fred but i have to ask : would he also allow the 911 firemen to suffer like the present leader of our country ? it seems that the lives of our citizens comes second to politics for the Republicans. Republicans don’t want to lose control of this country because they have been taking us to the cleaners for years. for the last few months we have seen nothing but a bunch of crooks from the Republican party. there is even untrust among their own ranks.

If any of you thought Clinton was a womanizer – you ain’t seen nothing yet.

    13. Kate on May 31st, 2007 8:41 pm

Tom, I agree with much of your analysis, and you probably know which “muches”. BUT my concern with Thompson is that he will appeal only to the most conservative Republicans. In reality, we all know that he will probably be able to pass the Iraq test. He timed his political exit right…a stroke of luck!

Hmmm, you hit Thompson’s other problem, right on. How is he going to dodge his womanizing ways. Maybe they just won’t come up?

Re #8 (Tom) Your post was truly one of the best authored, fact filled post I’ve read to date. Go Fred Go!!! FINALLY, there is a candidate that made it worth while to register for!!!

And Kate (#13), odds are his “flings” will be an issue however, I believe he’ll deal with them in a WAY more diplomatic way than Clinton did. He will simply tell the truth.

    15. Hmmm on June 1st, 2007 8:40 am

At best, a “truthful politician” is an oxymoron…

I think Mr. Fred Thompson will make one Hell of a president. GO FRED!
