Earn Your Desk…

I just got this email from my Mom, and it really touched a nerve. I thought I would share it with you.

Back in September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock, did something not to be forgotten.  On the first day of school, with permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she took all of the desks out of the classroom.

The kids came into first period, they walked in, there were no desks. They obviously looked around and said, “Ms. Cothren, where’s our desk?”
She said, “You can’t have a desk until you tell me how you earn them.”
They thought, “Well, maybe it’s our grades.”
“No,” she said.
“Maybe it’s our behavior?” they questioned.
“No,” she told them,  “it’s not even your behavior.”

And so they came and went in the first period, still no desks in the classroom. Second period, same thing. Third period. By early afternoon television news crews had gathered in Ms. Cothren’s class to find out about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of the classroom.

The last period of the day, Martha Cothren gathered her class. They were at this time sitting on the floor around the sides of the room, and she began to address her students, “Throughout the day no one has really understood how you earn the desks that sit in this classroom ordinarily.”

She paused to let her words sink in, then, as she continued to look around the classroom she said, “Now I’m going to tell you.”

Joe Thomas, Future NFL Player and Role Model

Joe_thomasThese days it is hard to imagine an NFL player with class and loyalty. This year we are going to have 2 in the draft, Calvin Johnson out of Georgia Tech who worked at a Subway and is as good a kid as one could imagine. He is from our town and all who know the young man rave about his character.

But the guy I want to talk about today is Joe Thomas. The NFL Commissioner is begging him to come to New York for the Draft to be on television and play the draft day game that gives the player and league so much publicity. He is going to be drafted in the top 10 and the NFL desperately wants him there.

But Joe Thomas isn’t going, it seems the he and his dad have a yearly fishing day on the same day as the NFL draft. That is so much more important to him than the glitz and glamor of New York that he is staying put. We talk so often about character that when we see it is seems surprising.

For a son to make that kind of commitment to his family shows what a fine man he will be. God bless him…

Despite a personal e-mail from commissioner Roger Goodell, Thomas rejected the NFL’s repeated written and verbal invitations to attend the draft-week festivities in New York. Thomas wants to maintain a years-old tradition in which he spends draft day fishing for coho salmon on Lake Michigan with his dad.

Enough of the Agendas … Let’s Blame the Ultimate Person Responsible, Cho Seung-Hui

The Face of Hate

Vanderbilt_deprvd

(Vanderbilt – ’07)

S’not about guns, S’bout random lunatics.
Plenty of Gunophobes are now screaming that guns must be registered (read confiscated). Minutes after this psycho committed the mass murders, the anti-gunners were changing the subject to suit their agenda.  This miscreant coward shot himself to avoid the aftermath of his crimes
.

Let’s remember in all of the media analysis just who is to blame for this heinous crime that has shocked the sensibilities of all rational people. The videos show that this was a plane and premeditated event. Who is to blame? Ultimately it is the shooter, , Cho Seung-Hui. This man was so filled with hate there may have been no way to have stopped this massacre. He was hell bent on going out with a blaze of glory.

SCOTUS Backs Ban on Partial Birth Abortion, “Promote Respect for life, Including the life of the Unborn.”

Well its about time. The US Supreme Court in a 5–4 ruling upheld the nationwide ban on SCOTUSpartial birth abortion. Even if you are pro-abortion, one would have to concede that the sick act of “partial birth” abortion goes beyond the pale of common decency. Its hardly an issue of choice.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Supreme Court upheld the nationwide ban on a controversial abortion procedure Wednesday, handing abortion opponents the long- awaited victory they expected from a more conservative bench.

The 5-4 ruling said the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act that Congress passed and President Bush signed into law in 2003 does not violate a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion. (Breitbart)

The SCOTUS decided to uphold “the respect for life”, what a novel concept. An abortion procedure? Partial birth abortion is not a procedure, it is barbarism.

The Supreme Court broke new ground yesterday in upholding federal restrictions on abortion, with President Bush’s two appointees joining a court majority that said Congress was exercising its license to “promote respect for life, including the life of the unborn.”

It was also the first time since the landmark Roe v. Wade decision of January 1973 that justices approved an abortion restriction that did not contain an exception for the health of the woman. It does, however, provide an exception to save the woman’s life. (Washington Post)

Others posting:

This is a barbarous procedure. Regardless of where you stand on abortion, this is an abomination that we, as a society, should not allow. (I am frankly shocked that any doctors in this country agree to perform what is nothing more than the killing of infants. Not embryos, infants.)

And some reaction typical over-reaction from the left. Sorry folks, partial birth abortion goes beyond all levels of human decency and is one of the most barbaric and hideous acts ever. All in the name of choice, bull!

Chip, chip, chipping away at Casey’s “undue burden” test until a woman’s right to control her reproductive decisions fundamentally disappears.
