Van der Sloot Residence Search in Pictures, Part 1

The Search of the Van der Sloot Residence

Maybe Aruban officials can explain to Natalee’s family why this was not done in the early days of the investigation.

Great work Red et al. I hope this search reveals some new evidence. Keeping fingers crossed.

Good question, Red. Why wasn’t a thorough search done in the first few days after Natalee disappeared. Not two years later or 13 days later, but as soon as you knew the 3 young men lied about dropping Natalee off at the Holiday Inn. As Dr. Baden tried to point out on Geraldo’s show, but was interrupted by an angry Joe Tacopina, ALE knew what to do. They did it right with the security guards. Unfortunately, they had the wrong guys and when they realized the the son of an apprentice judge was involved, they chose to do it all wrong. That’s how you spell boycott.

I have to admit that I was embarrassed listening to our news tonight. We have a lot of hosts, guest panelists and defense attorneys who either (1) are lying deliberately to mislead and are not being called on it by the show host, or (2) don’t know enough about the topic to be opining on the subject, and/or (3) are talking about the Dutch Forensic team like they’re barely competent and those sitting in the newsroom know more. Makes for entertaining TV for some, I suppose, but also helps me understand why so many criticize our media.

Here the transcript and translation of the NOVA interview yesterday, with Paul van der Sloot on the housesearch of the last two days.
(To make up for the blunder I made yesterday …)

Intro: Today two years after the dissappearence of Natalee Holloway again a housesearch has been conducted in the parents house of JvdS on Aruba. Still the mainsuspect in the murder- or dissapp. case of Natalee Holloway. Not just another housesearch… This time more then 25 forensic experts from Holland and members of the KLPD (Corps Nat. Police Services) and they re-started the investigation. They were supposed to have serious leads that could point to the murderer. On the telephone, PvdS the father of Joran…
Nova: You are at Aruba… Can you tell what has happened today at your house… and yesterday?
PvdS: Yes, they started a housesearch yesterday. From around ten o’clock on and they went on till the evening. And this morning they continued that and around two o’clock Aruban time they ended the search.
Nova: How many people were there at your house?
PvdS: Well there were some 20 people from the NL’s and some Aruban detectives. But it were especialy the Dutch that I saw do the searching.
Nova: When did you hear for the first time this all would be happening?
PvdS: That was when the housesearch started.
Nova: And were there things taken from the house?
PvdS: Yes they took my diary-notes with them, they took diary-notes from Anita and some letters… That’s what they took… And the computer they’ve taken but I got that back already.
Nova: And I understood that they have sought for things in a different way…? Some drilling has been going on…?
PvdS: Yes that’s right… They came with enormous equipment.., sonar equipment.., drills.., and these kinds of thin tubes… And they have, well you can hardly believe it, they have realy searched for Natalee in our garden…
Nova: Well, that’s what we have understood as well from the people leading the investigation.., namely that they were looking for the corpse or the remains of that…
PvdS: Yes.., yes.., it’s uhh.., it’s uhh.., it’s uuh… indeed unbelievable… that uhhh, that… that they do that… I had uhhh… I had never believed that could be possible… That uhhh, that uuh… that they seriously would do that… (grins)… But they did it anyway…
Nova: Well that indicates that police at Aruba and in the NL’s still think there’s something to be found at your place… and that you are still a suspect in the case?
PvdS: No, no, it is.. uh, I.., I am no longer a suspect in the case… It is about Joran… But… Yes they are now reassured… They haven’t found anything!
Nova: Uhhm… You don’t know that for sure I assume… Have they taken traces with them from your place or are you sure about that?
PvdS: Yes I’m sure they didn’t found anything, yes (bit hesitant).
Nova: Yes. Are you again interrogated by the police?
PvdS: Uh.. they have.. I don’t talk to the police! That is something that HAS been! I’ve made that very clear! I will not talk with the police again.
Nova: Was there a request from the Dutch police or the Aruban police-off’s to speak to you again?
PvdS: They uhh.., they uhh, uh, picked me up at the court… I just had a uh, defended uh, a client in a penal-case, and uh, then uh, a detective came to me who said he wanted to talk to me. And then I made him very clear that I didn’t feel for that.. And next he told me that they were conducting a housesearch. And then I uhh, I got in my car and drove here…
Nova: Eight detectives have traveled from the NL’s to Aruba. Again… for this case. There are 25 workers from the Forensic Institute that came by your house uhh, what do you think of that?
PvdS: Well, yes uh as a tax-payer uhh in the NL’s I would uh, frinkle my forehead… What I saw uhh.. The way they uhhh… Yes these uhh… Our house was a sort of resort… They’d put tables outside… Chairs… Uh drinks… Uh lots of food… Uh… Making lots of pleasure… These uhh, these uhh, these boys and girls had the time of their lives and uhh… And I welcome it to them off course… But uhh, then you must not uhh, not uhh, expect uhh, that uhhh, you are being taken seriously… considderd being busy with an investigation…a
Nova: Mr. vdSloot were are told that the policeservice.., the NL’s policeservice the KLPD had serious leads that could possibly could lead to a breakthrough in the case…
PvdS: Yes… Well yes… These were not disclosed to me…
Nova: It must be a comfort to you if indeed there is a breakthrough because you are convinced of the innocence of your son.
      PvdS: Yes, that’s right…
Nova: (Waits for elaboration on that) … … … So the searching does make sense? Maybe for you as well?
PvdS: Well look… Uhh… You can always look at it in a positive way… They always look… They always look for a… It’s an enormous violation of your private life.. That’s uhhh.., that’s uuhh… You should experience that… to realy realy feel that… It’s truly very annoying when people… – strangers and known – uhh go through al your.., all your stuff… That is realy uh, an enormous violation of your private life… And uhh… in that sense I uhh am very angry about that… But uh when you look at it in a positive way… Yes… then you hope now… that now finaly there will come an end to… This is now the 4th search of the house… And that they uhh.., let’s say… Go sit/ride on the right track now… And uhh… Or in any case… uhh.. wonder if uhh indeed this is all uh.. about a crime… Because you as well started with… uh… with… uh… telling that… Yes… “Who is the murderer of Natalee Holloway…” But then I think you are one step ahead… It is still uhh…
Nova: It is possible that she’s just missing? … I want to ask you one more question mr. VdS… This all comes at a time… Your son still is a suspect in the case… Uhhm… And at the same time has written a book about the whole matter… Do you think that’s a correct thing to do at this time?
PvdS: Well he did that as a coping-proces. And I think that is very good. When you… when you write… uhh.. then, then, then…. Then you put things in the right order… And… Well… well he did that… I had him on the telephone today and I notice that… (can’t hear) … is now. He can now put it behind him…
      Nova: Yes…
PvdS: And you should almost think that this kind of action of the KLPD uhh… is some sort of uhhh publicity stunt for the book…
      Nova: Yes…
PvdS: I saw by the way, today that uhh, uhh, uhh, that the people (of the KLPD) weree reading copies of the book… So… And I saw them on and on.., well yes… laugh at what they read… So apparently…
      Nova: Well… well… We have…
PvdS: … it was worth reading….
Nova: Well we have to leave it here… Anyway… Thanks you for the explanation.. From Aruba… Paul vd Sloot . Thank you

Note this part: “And uhh… Or in any case… uhh.. wonder if uhh indeed this is all uh.. about a crime… Because you as well started with… uh… with… uh… telling that… Yes… “Who is the murderer of Natalee Holloway…” But then I think you are one step ahead… It is still uhh…”. Here PvdS seems to look at a way out rather than has an open mind to other possibilities f.i. someone else committed the crime!

Can someone find the publisher of his book, cannot find it, of course I can ‘read’ it.

Lovely weather in the Netherlands at the moment, so nice, unlike where the heat is on now. Heat, temperature and air do things to a body, Joran knows that. I will listen to his book as he tells it from his narcissistic personality, and lawyers, that is my view from the Statistical manual as a perspective. Personality disorders are open to validation by the person exhibiting those traits, so beware acting out the book conditions or get labelled in such categories.

And note that he tries to smear the KLPD-team for “partying” and “doing nothing”. Where the KLPD are ordinairy workers too that are entitled to have some breaks during the day as well!

    10. Richard on April 29th, 2007 6:51 am

Lil Puma (#2) … That’s entirely right. The TV talk shows are there to provide “entertainment.” Why else do they need to bring on a panel of people who seemingly aren’t even aware of the latest developments … such as that Aruba has agreed to prolong the case beyond the two-year “deadline” that we all feared?

    11. Richard on April 29th, 2007 6:55 am

What’s good, though, is that now the ALE seems to be frozen out of the case entirely. I don’t know how much faith we can put in the Dutch (I don’t think they would go to all this effort for a charade, or want to make themselves look as ridiculous as the ALE), but certainly we have infinitely more chance for answers with them than we do with ALE.

Apparently TES is going back to Aruba. Let’s hope they and the Dutch can work together … leaving the Arubans to stare and gape.

    12. Fools Gold on April 29th, 2007 7:14 am

You have a situation wherein a politically well connected Judge was anything from the fourth one in to a mere hinderer of the prosecution and its taken a damaging boycott to get the Dutch team to even perform this minimal action.

    13. Donna on April 29th, 2007 7:53 am

I hope they find Natalee or some evidence but I am afraid it is too little too late. Why didn’t this Dutch team come to Aruba 2 years ago? Why did they allow Paulis to refuse to have his property searched by police and EquiSearch?
Not a day goes by that I don’t think of Natalee and her family. Justice for Natalee!!!

    14. Houston on April 29th, 2007 8:22 am

Did I read the reports correctly, these people 16 of them, have been in Aruba since June of last year, 10 months, and all they can come up with is a search of the yard? I look for the yard search to come to an end and they all go back to Holland and say “we will look over the data we have collected”….resulting in nothing.

There are a lot of people involved in this murder and cover up and know it takes time to get them all….but they need to start putting people in jail.

Does Tacopina and his partner lady attorney. Think by saying on TV that the reason for the search of the home is just a lock on the door as far as the case is concerned, remember this.

Would Joe T say on TV,” well yes geraldo, the have another lead and of course they are going to my clients home to do a search as their may be some evidence from the crime yet”

No they are not, they are gonna say exactly what they said. They can’t say any thing else or they would be implying, that the Sloots had Natalee at their home.

BTW I hope they found Anita’s camera or maybe a photo album or something, I know she was distraught that it was take on the FIRST DENIED AND NEVER DONE SEARCH.

    17. Richard on April 29th, 2007 9:05 am

An interview with Dave Holloway appears in today’s Birmingham News. I sent it to Red. Dave says that he first heard about the Dutch search from the FBI on Thursday.

He also said he’s trying to verify whether the two-year deadline has in fact been lifted. Apparently the source for this was in a Dutch newspaper article.

    18. LilPuma on April 29th, 2007 9:55 am

To correct a few things heard on the news in the last 48 hours:
      1. I believe Red has posted that Paulus did deny authorities as well as Tim Miller access to search his property. Joe Tacopina says he did not. Mark Fuhrman points out that search warrant restrictions aside, Paulus could have allowed a search of the entire premises. Instead, a Judge changed the parameters of the search warrant at the time of the search.

      2. Joe Tacopina says that Natalee was never at the van der Sloot house. Neither he nor any of us know that. He is only believing his client, who recently admitted to being a pathological liar in an interview in Holland.

      3. Joe Tacopina says that he doesn’t know if Aruban police had access to forensic specialists. The FBI was there, observing and ready to help. I believe they have experts in the field of forensics who might have even been willing to work with the Forensic Institute of the Netherlands if need be (so any findings would be allowed in an Aruban court).

We know this blog is read by many who follow this case. If you recall other misinformation heard on the US news, please post! Jossy, as always, was either factual or stated clearly that it was his belief.

    19. Susan on April 29th, 2007 10:21 am

The news article below is one of the most damning pieces published to date on the disappearance of Natalee Ann Holloway:

Reports Conflict in Case of Missing Ala. Teen
      Saturday, June 11, 2005

ORANJESTAD, Aruba – Reports conflicted Saturday in developments of the Alabama honor student who has been missing in Aruba for almost two weeks.

David Cruz, a spokesman for the Aruban Minister of Justice told FOX News Natalee Holloway, who was on vacation with friends with a graduation trip when she disappeared, was confirmed dead and that authorities knew the location of her body.

However, Cruz later retracted the statement, saying he was a victim of a “misinformation campaign.”

The mother of the 18-year-old told FOX News authorities had not yet contacted them with this information but did say that Natalee’s father, who is divorced from her mother, was with investigators looking for the body.

These reports came after significant, and at times conflicting, developments with the five suspects being detained in the case.

The “Diario,” a local daily newspaper, is reporting that a human blood sample found in a car at the residence of one of the teens in custody – the 17-year-old son of a high-ranking island judicuary official – is now being sent to the U.S. and will be tested for a possible match to Natalee, whose mother gave a blood sample to investigators.

CIA World Factbook: Aruba – One of the young men detained admitted “something bad happened” to the woman after they took her to the beach, a police officer said, while prosecutors said the investigation was at a crucial point.

But prosecutors refused to comment on the statement by Deputy Police Commissioner Gerold Dompig, who told the Associated Press that the man who made that admission was leading police to the scene. He refused to identify which of the three young men who took Holloway to a northern beach the night she went missing made the statement.

Police refused Saturday morning to say whether they discovered anything overnight to solve the mystery of what happened to Holloway, who was last seen in the early hours of May 30.

Referring to Dompig’s statement, prosecution spokeswoman Vivian van der Biezen (search) said Saturday: “We neither confirm nor deny any information coming from other sources … [about] alleged statements of suspects in this case.”

“The investigation at the moment is the following: Five suspects are being held … and we are at a very crucial, very important moment in our investigation,” she said.

A judge ruled Saturday that police can continue to detain three young men – two Surinamese brothers and the Dutch teen – arrested in the disappearance of Holloway.

Police also have detained two other men – former security guards at a hotel near the one where Holloway was staying. No one has been charged in the case.

Holloway vanished during a five-day trip to the Dutch Caribbean island with 124 classmates and seven chaperones celebrating their graduation from Mountain Brook, Ala., High School, near Birmingham. Police found her U.S. passport and packed bags in her hotel room after she failed to show up for her return flight that day.

Prime Minister Nelson Oduber said on national radio Friday night that if something happened to Holloway, it would damage the reputation of this island of 97,000 people, which depends on tourism and is considered one of the safest spots in the Caribbean.

In Holloway’s hometown, her friends gathered after midnight at a church where people have been holding prayer vigils for her. Some hugged and cried; one woman left a flickering candle at the base of a wall decorated with messages to Holloway, who had earned a full scholarship to the University of Alabama, where she planned to study medicine.

Antonio Carlo, an attorney for the Dutch minor, told the AP: “My client maintains his innocence.”

Holloway’s mother and stepfather told The Birmingham News in Alabama that they discovered the Dutch boy’s connection to their daughter within 24 hours of her disappearance by talking to other students on the trip. They then found surveillance videotapes showing him playing poker with other Mountain Brook teens in their hotel casino two days before she vanished.

A lawyer for one of the Surinamese – Satish Kalpoe, 18, whose brother, Deepak, 21, also is in custody – said they told police they took Holloway to Arashi Beach, on the northern part of the island, in the early hours of May 30.

According to their police statement, they did not get out of the car, Carlo said. Instead, Holloway and the Dutch teen, an honors student at the Aruba International School whom she had met at the casino in her hotel, “were in the back seat kissing.”

They also told police that they dropped Holloway at her Holiday Inn at about 2 a.m. and last saw her being approached by a man in a security guard uniform before they drove off, Kock said.

The brothers told police the blonde, blue-eyed young woman was drunk and refused to get out of the car, said Noraina Pietersz, who is representing Mickey John, 30, one of the two former security guards. He and Abraham Jones, 28, have been detained since Sunday.

The three young men said Holloway stumbled in the parking lot of the hotel but refused help from her Dutch escort, Kock said.

Holiday Inn employees say security cameras did not record Holloway’s return. A Holiday Inn guard who worked the overnight shift that day said he did not see her, said Pietersz, who said she reviewed the guard’s statement to police.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

*We will never forget the blunders of the botched investigation the Aruban/Dutch authorities have made along the way to protect the “prime suspects” in Natalee’s disappearance!*

I suspect that Natalee Holloway’s remains will be returned to her loving family … her country … in a futile appeasement attempt. Joran … maybe Deepak … will be held accountable … accountable for disposing of Natalee after she “apparently” died of a drug overdose.
      .
I contend that it is too late for Aruba/Holland to turn back the clock. The fallout is too huge to comprehend … Paulus Van der Sloot … the sons of the elite … those at all levels of the Dutch/Aruban administrations who participated in the coverup as well as … the exposure of all of Aruba’s dirty little secrets encompassing drugs … gambling … prostitution … pornography …money laundering ….
      .

FoolsGold (#12), you are totally right. I don’t think anyone can doubt that it’s the impact of the boycott that in August induced the Aruban business community to turn to the Dutch for help.

They didn’t care about Natalee then. They don’t care about Natalee now. But they do like their piggybanks.

I doubt that the Dutch care about Natalee either, but the corruption on the happy island must be giving them conniption fits.

If they found Natalee tomorrow, dead or alive, would that end the need for the boycott? Not in my view … not if there’s any doubt left about what role some of the Aruban government and law enforcement officials have played in this whole saga.

Because of the Natalee case, the big rock in the forest that was Aruba has been overturned. All sorts of wriggling, squirming, crawling little grubs, frightened of the unaccustomed light, are scurrying for cover.

      They need to be smashed.

No justice for Natalee … no tourists for Aruba.

    26. Richard on April 29th, 2007 11:39 am

I talked with the coordinator of the Miami Herald protest this morning via cell phone … it’s 90 degrees in the shade in Miami, and I don’t think her team are in the shade.

Regardless of that, things seem to be going very well. They managed to hang one sign in between two trees, in such a way that anyone going to the travel show, or just driving or walking by, has to see it.

And response is very positive. She said demand for their handouts is strong, and that people are giving vocal and obvious signs of support. People seem to be angry at Aruba!

We shivered in Boston … they’re sweltering in Miami … but the demand is the same: JUSTICE FOR NATALEE.

I don’t want to pre-empt their story, but photos from the actual protest should be going to the blogs soon.

And the number of people contributing was more than twice that of the Boston protest! Many thanks to all.

J4N, do you have a link you could post to access the pics at the Miami Travel Show? If I didn’t live so far away from both Boston, but a bit closer to Miami, I would be there with bells on :) :):)

Thank you to those who are protesting in Miami! This morning I was disgusted to see a 3″ x 11″ ad on the front page of the Chicago Tribune Travel Section promoting Aruba’s new slogan: One HOT Destination! One COOL Vacation! Well, they have the “HOT” part right. In the summer it is at least 90 degrees everyday, if not more. And those are not breezes you see blowing everyones hair around, it is WIND.

Boycott must be working, never saw an Aruba ad on the front page before.

I just recieved a little info I thought I would share with the monkeys.

I can tell you one thing that you’ll be the first person in the U.S. to know: at this time some trucks did arrive behind the light house, with dogs and sophisticated equipment and a search is under way on that spot as I am writing to you. I just send my reporter to the spot to take the necessary pictures and sniff around to see what this new search is all about. They arrived there about fifteen minutes ago.

Susan, here is a link to the signs. You might have to scroll a bit.

They are photos taken at the shop, but you can still see how fabulous the signs and banners are! The group has them strung in several prominent places at the Miami show.

There will be actual photos of the event forthcoming.

If the NFI does find anything the Family would be the first to be notified. They were notified by the FBI of the new search.
I was making a list in my mind of all the people who have had their lives ever changed by the actions of Joran and the Kalpoes and the Van Der Sloot family. The HT family is of course first. Dompig lost his career over this. Van Der Stratten wanted to stay on. Aruba’s economy. Karin Janssen was made to look a fool. Anyone that had anything to do with Joran was tossed under the bus. One person ( or three or four ) caused all of this… and a loss of life so he could go on ” as normal “. The priority of the Sloots was that Joran go to school and get an education and be someone or something. Instead, look what they have wrought. So, Paulus had his privacy invaded. His kids are alive. Boo Hoo. Are they ever going to do the right thing ? Probably not as they are beyond redemption it appears.

    48. Robert on April 29th, 2007 2:33 pm

Oké… Don’t know if I typed it wrong or read wrong in my English dictionary but I understand that I should have written “Wrinkle” instead of “Frinkle” (hope not that that is a dirty word…). Maybe I should have better used the word Wrown…. Oh sorry Frown…

Miss Refried on fox saying Paulus was relieved to have search done.

Susan in your post two Aruban officials giving out information that Natalee was murdered and they both retract their statements.

The legacy that these ppl have left for their children and grandchildren amazing, you care so much about the sloots, that you have sacraficed your integrity and the fact that your children and grandchildren will be dammed with your last name.

On another site a promintent poster from Aruba told him to MAN UP AND TELL THE TRUTH.

Paulus the ppl of Aruba are asking you to MAN UP.

Enough. Justice for NL and her family. Maybe with the new searches? But after 2 years I am glad to see they are doing something but my question is if it will yield results. It’s been 2 years. I think that should be enough time to destroy evidence etc. But who knows.

    55. Susan on April 29th, 2007 2:58 pm

      Miss Underestimated,

Yup, Aruban officials publicly stated that Natalee’s body had been located, she was officially confirmed dead, then they retracted their statements. How can anyone make such a statement, then retract it? We all know or highly suspect the reasoning behind it. Shame on them all for maliciously, deceitfully causing so much pain and sorrow to Beth and Dave!!

      ARUBA, LET NATALEE GO!!!!!

      No, no…

    62. MIiss-Underestimated on April 29th, 2007 5:16 pm

Susan and consider that it came from TWO Aruban officials, not one but two ….

dennisintn, what are Pauley’s lawyers gonna say? I think this totally caught the VDS camp off guard, they are coming off to me as a little PO’d.

I am going to borrow the other posters phrase

MAN UP PAULEY AND TELL THE TRUTH

    63. katablog on April 29th, 2007 5:17 pm

It’s simply not about you Paulus. You dare to cry and whine about privacy invasion? How sickening. How many people have had their privacy invaded because of your son’s “fun” at the beach one night? Everyone your son ever talked to was hauled down before the police (rightly or wrongly I don’t know). Natalee and her family were drug through the mud over and over and over again. Why? Because of your creepy, lying, psychopath son!

Now man up, confess. Make your son confess. And for God’s sake quit your damn whining!

    64. MIiss-Underestimated on April 29th, 2007 5:27 pm

The sentiment of some of the Aruban LE.

Paulus felt the cop that went to his office to get him to go to his home to open his home for the search, was DISREPECTFUL, Paulus would not answer the cop, and the cop blocked the doorway (was he afraid Pauley would flee?)

Why the disrespect? Is Aruba LE fed up with Pauley and the bad mojo he made for the island?

      MAN UP PAULEY

    65. vero on April 29th, 2007 6:12 pm

It’s funny that the privileged seem to think that police should be kissing their derrieres. Poor people could tell them a thing or two about what to expect from the police!
