Thousands of people converged on the World War II Memorial on the National Mall on Sunday morning and tore down the barricades blocking it off, protesting the closure of the memorial during the federal government shutdown.

Beginning at about 9:30 a.m., Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, as well as former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, were among the luminaries in a crowd that chanted “Tear down these walls!” and sang “God Bless America” as well as other patriotic songs as they entered the memorial, which has been closed since the government shutdown that began Oct. 1.

Tractor-trailers headed down 17th Street toward the Mall, blaring their horns. The Metropolitan Police Department blocked off the street, prompting the crowd to head up the street, shouting at the police to move their vehicles.

Cruz said that President Obama was using veterans as political pawns in the shutdown.

The announcement of an arrest in one of New York City’s most notorious cold cases was especially relieving for two hardened investigators, who for 22 years had been working to identify the girl they nicknamed Baby Hope after discovering her body stuffed in a picnic cooler along a highway.

Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Melissa Mourges, the original prosecutor in the 1991 case and now chief of the cold case unit, told a Manhattan judge that Conrado Juarez, 52, was charged with felony murder late Saturday.

The charge came shortly after police announced the Bronx man was a relative of the tiny victim, 4-year-old Anjelica Castillo. Police revealed her name for the first time earlier in the day.

Juarez, wearing a white short sleeve button-down shirt and blue pants, pleaded not guilty but said nothing else after he was remanded to custody. Attorney information was not immediately available.

CNN:

Detectives from the New York Police Department’s Cold Case Apprehension Squad never stopped searching for answers in the case. Each year, on the anniversary of the July 23, 1991, discovery of her body, they would canvass nearby neighborhoods, handing out fliers and asking people for information.

It was an anonymous tip called in after the latest canvass in July that helped crack the case, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. It led detectives to Anjelica’s sister, now an adult; from there, they identified the woman believed to be the girl’s mother, he said.

“That individual’s actions were the catalyst for this most recent lead,” Kelly said, referring to Juarez’s arrest. He is Anjelica’s cousin on her father’s side.

Police arrested Juarez after questioning him near the Manhattan restaurant where he worked as a dishwasher, Kelly said. He was expressionless as police led him in handcuffs past reporters.

Juarez admitted to the crime Saturday morning, Kelly said.

UPDATE I: ‘Baby Hope’ case: Cousin confesses to sexually assaulting, killing toddler Anjelica Castillo more than two decades ago.

Conrado Juarez, 52, confessed Saturday to killing the girl and disposing of her body in a cooler with the help of his sister, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

His tiny victim, whose name had been a mystery for more than two decades, was identified for the first time as 4-year-old Anjelica Castillo.

Juarez, a dishwasher from the Bronx, told cops he sodomized and then quietly smothered Anjelica with a pillow in a hallway at his sister’s home in Astoria, Queens.

When the little girl went motionless, Juarez summoned his sister, Balvina Juarez-Ramirez, from another room, Kelly said.

Juarez-Ramirez, who was caring for the girl, insisted they secretly get rid of her body, Kelly said.

She brought him a filthy cooler — as the other family members living there remained unaware of the cruelty underway just down the hall, Kelly said.

Juarez and his sister, who is now dead, carried the cooler out of the apartment and took a black livery cab to Manhattan, where they dumped the icebox along a wooded stretch of the Henry Hudson Parkway.

Tavis Smiley: ‘Black People Will Have Lost Ground in Every Single Economic Indicator’ Under Barack Obama

Finally some one in the liberal black community is admitting the truth, Barack Obama has been a nightmare for blacks.

During an interview on Fox News’s ‘Hannity,’ PBS’s Tavis Smiley said the following, “The data is going to indicate sadly that when the Obama administration is over, black people will have lost ground in every single leading economic indicator category” There you have it, blacks who voted for Obama 95% in 2008 and 93% in 2012, have been sold a bill of goods and received nothing for their vote but food stamps. So why would African-Americans have voted in such large numbers for a president who has failed them incredibly? Could it possibly be that the liberal MSM and black leaders have refused to tell them the truth that Obama has been their worst nightmare? What would the liberal media be reporting if blacks had lost ground in every single economic indicator, if the president was white?

From News Busters:

SEAN HANNITY, HOST: My last question to you. You often do these seminars with the state of black America. I’ve watched them on C-Span and different channels, right?

TAVIS SMILEY: Right.

HANNITY: Are black Americans better off five years into the Obama presidency?

SMILEY: Let me answer your question very forthrightly. No, they are not. The data is going to indicate sadly that when the Obama administration is over, black people will have lost ground in every single leading economic indicator category. On that regard, the president ought to be held responsible.

But here’s the other side. I respect the president. I will protect the president. And I will correct the president. He’s right on this government shutdown. Republicans are thwarting the rule of law with the Constitution. If they let this debt go into default, they’re trampling again on the Constitution.

When will minorities ever wake up, but that’s right, it’s all Republicans fault.

Federal investigators offered their help late on Friday night regarding the incident at the Tierra Blanca High Country Youth Program, but so far local and state authorities have not asked the FBI to participate, a law enforcement source in New Mexico told NBC News. A search warrant was executed at the Tierra Blanca ranch on Friday amid an abuse investigation, the Associated Press reported, and the boys aged 13 and 17 were found not to be on the property.

New Mexico State Police issued a statement Saturday morning that said they had received information that one or more of the teenage boys may have been returned to their parents.

“We have not been able to confirm officially on our end,” State Police spokesman Emmanuel Gutierrez told NBC News. “It’s a very active investigation we are treating it with the utmost urgency.”\

UPDATE I: An attorney for the ranch, Pete Domenici, Jr., claim the boys are safe; however, Amber Alert remains active …

Domenici issued a statement on Friday in which he said that the teenagers had been “on a previously scheduled activity away from the ranch for several days. They are safe and have already been picked up by their parents, or their parents are en route to pick them up,” according to the AP.

Police said that until they were in a position to physically confirm the well-being of the missing boys, the Amber Alert will remain active.

UPDATE II: At least 1 of 9 teens reported missing from NM youth ranch returned to parents.

New Mexico’s child services department says at least one of the nine teenagers reported missing from a rural ranch for troubled youth has been returned to his parents.

Child, Youth and Families Department spokesman Harry Varela says that “one, possibly more, have been returned.”  Varela added Saturday that they are working with the other families

“At this time, Scott Chandler is a person if interest in this case,” said Sgt. Emmanuel Gutierrez, a state police spokesman. “This is an active investigation and all leads are still being followed. At this point and time, State Police has not been able to confirm a location or the safety” of the teens.

Program operators had been ordered to send the kids back to their parents or surrender them to the state after staff members were accused of beating and shackling students.

UPDATE III: 2 boys reported missing from New Mexico ranch returned.

New Mexico officials confirmed that two of the nine boys who were reported missing from a New Mexico ranch for troubled youth have been returned to their families, after the FBI volunteered their help in the search.

UPDATE IV: Attorney: All 9 missing teens from New Mexico youth ranch are with parents.

All nine teenagers who were sought in an Amber Alert are with their parents, according to the lawyer for a New Mexico youth ranch. But, authorities say, the Amber Alert will remain active until they can confirm the teens’ location and well-being.

On Saturday, police said they had confirmed that four of the nine were in their parent’s custody. They were still searching for the five other missing boys.

The nine teens were attending a facility for troubled youths called the Tierra Blanca Youth Ranch, and authorities began searching for them after receiving allegations of abuse, police say.

Pete Domenici, the attorney for the ranch, told CNN early Sunday morning that the teens were all with their parents and have been for “many, many hours.”
