21 year old Leslie Allen Merritt Jr. has been arrested in connection with the recent rash of Phoenix, Arizona highway shootings. Merritt has been named a suspect in at least four of the shootings. The authorities believe that other shootings may be that of copycats. Gov. Doug Ducey first broke the news about the arrest in a tweet just before 7 p.m Friday night., after SWAT team members closed in on the suspect at a Walmart near 59th and Northern avenues. Merritt has not been formally charged but is expected to face a range of charges, such as unlawful discharge of a firearm and aggravated assault, Graves said. Merritt is reported to have a previous had a criminal record. Merritt will be arraigned on Saturday.

With Friday’s arrest of Leslie Allen Merritt Jr., 21, law-enforcement officials said they had a suspect in at least four of the shootings in custody — news that brought relief but not necessarily closure.

Arizona Department of Public Safety Director Frank Milstead said Merritt had been linked to at least four of 11 shootings incidents through a gun he owned.

“The weapon and man we believe was responsible for starting this spree is in custody,” Milstead said late Friday at a hastily called news conference.

Milstead spoke only for a few minutes and would not divulge other details, such as a possible motive.

“Are there others out there? Are there copycats? That is possible,” Milstead said.

Ballistics tests linked a weapon owned by the suspect to the first four of the 11 freeway shootings, on Aug. 29 and 31, Milstead said. Investigators had tracked down the weapon at a pawn shop in Phoenix.

Merritt’s Facebook page contains several links to stories about the freeway shootings, as well as several images supporting gun rights and video of him shooting a 9mm handgun.

Before the arrest, Milstead and Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery had labeled the shooter as a domestic terrorist.

A landscaper arrested in a series of Phoenix freeway shootings told a judge that authorities have “the wrong guy” as investigators stood by their detective work that traced the gun to the suspect after he took it to a pawn shop.

Leslie Allen Merritt Jr. was charged Saturday with counts including aggravated assault, criminal damage, disorderly conduct, carrying out a drive-by shooting and intentional acts of terrorism.

“All I have to say is I’m the wrong guy. I tried telling the detectives that. My gun’s been in the pawn shop the last two months. I haven’t even had access to a weapon,” he said as he stood handcuffed in a black and white striped jail uniform.

But a charging document released late Saturday night by Maricopa Superior Court said that investigators determined Merritt had not pawned his gun at the time of the incidents.

4 Marines Killed in Attacks on Chattanooga, TN Military Facilities (Update: Shooter ID’d as 24 Year Old Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez)

The AP is reporting that four  U.S. Marines have been killed as a gunman unleashed a barrage of fire at a recruiting center and another U.S. military site a few miles apart in Chattanooga on Thursday. The shooter also was killed. Law enforcement sources told CBS News that the shooting suspect was identified as 24-year-old Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez. The FBI has taken charge of the investigation. The shooting attacks were carried out at the Army Recruiting Center on Lee highway in Chattanooga and the Naval and Marine Reserve Center at the Chattanooga Riverpark, locations that are only seven miles apart.

A gunman unleashed a barrage of gunfire at two military facilities Thursday in Tennessee, killing four Marines and wounding two other service members and a police officer, officials told CBS News.

The shooter also was killed. Law enforcement sources told CBS News that the shooting suspect was identified as 24-year-old Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez. According to a U.S. law enforcement source, Abdulazeez was born in Kuwait and came to the United States in 1996. It’s unclear if and when he became an American citizen.

A U.S. official told CBS News that Abdulazeez was not on law enforcement radar concerning possible terror links or aspirations. The FBI was not aware of him as being any kind of threat.

UPDATE I: FBI Statement on Shootings at Military Facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The FBI’s Knoxville Field Office, along with the Chattanooga Police Department and other law enforcement partners, are working jointly to investigate today’s shootings at a military recruitment center and a reserve center in Chattanooga, Tennessee in which four individuals were killed and three injured. The shooter, Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, 24, is also deceased. While it would be premature to speculate on the motives of the shooter at this time, we will conduct a thorough investigation of this tragedy and provide updates as they are available.

Really, is it really premature to speculate as to what the motives of an individual like Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, who shows all the signs of radicalized Islam and a lone wolf terrorist? Seriously? ISIS has previously called for attacks on America and specifically on uniformed police and military. Can we please stop the PC nonsense and just call this for what it is, TERRORISM.

ABC News:  Chattanooga Shooting: Four Marines Dead in Shooting at Military Offices.

Witnesses said that they heard dozens of shots as the suspected gunman, identified as 24-year-old Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, opened fire on two military installations sending people running for cover, according to the Associated press.

Abdulazeez, of Hixson, Tenn., was killed in a firefight with responding police officers after the rampage, a U.S. official said. The FBI said Friday night that the manner of his death was still being determined.

A motive for the shooting was still under investigation, but officials were investigating whether he was inspired by ISIS or other terrorist groups.

“My main message right now is obviously the deepest sympathies of the American people to the four Marines that have been killed,” President Obama said to reporters in the Oval Office. “It is a heartbreaking circumstance for these individuals … to be killed in this fashion.”

The Oklahoma City bombing was a domestic terror attack on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995. Timothy McVeigh detonated an explosive-filled truck that he had parked in front of the Federal Building as McVeigh’s co-conspirator, Terry Nichols, had assisted in the bomb preparation. The Oklahoma bomb blast claimed 168 lives, including 19 children under the age of 6, and injured more than 680 people. It was the greatest and most destructive act of terrorism in the United States until September 11, 2011. McVeigh was executed by lethal injection in 2001. Nichols was convicted in 1997 of conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction and eight counts of involuntary manslaughter for killing federal law enforcement personnel. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole because the jury deadlocked on the death penalty.

Oklahoma City marks 20th anniversary of bombing at memorial.

Oklahomans and others gathered Sunday at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum for the 20th anniversary Remembrance Ceremony in honor of those who died as a result of the April 19, 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.

Emotions overwhelmed Helena Garrett as she stood at a lectern near the reflecting pool at the Oklahoma City National Memorial and struggled to say her son’s name.

“My baby,” she said and paused, bowing her head and grasping the side of the podium when the emotions were too much, before continuing.

Bound by a common loss, sons, daughters, parents, brothers, sisters and others, read the names Sunday of the 168 people who died as a result of the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building during a 20th anniversary Remembrance Ceremony.

Hundreds of people gathered where the building once stood, and many more watched from home, to honor those who died in one of the largest acts of domestic terrorism in the nation’s history. As they remembered, they also celebrated the city’s resiliency and response in the face of what was described as unspeakable horror.

In the minutes after the attack, the people of Oklahoma City did something that others watching from afar found hard to fathom, FBI Director James Comey said.

Watch the VIDEO below of 61 year old Doug Hughes, a mail man, from Florida explains what his planned mission was and that he had planned it well in advance. Doug says that no sane man would do what he was going to do, ya think? He stated he carefully planned this stunt, and did not want to get hurt. Doug Hughes states that “terrorists don’t announce their fights before they take off. Terrorists don’t broadcast their flight path. Terrorists don’t invite an escort to go along with them.” Hmm, thanks to Dough Hughes and the idiotic reaction of the Capital police and Secret Service, I bet they do now.

Dough Hughes did this stunt in order to draw attention to campaign finance reform and most likely probably brought more attention to would-be terrorists and lone-wolfs in how to fly in a no-fly zone without getting blown out of the sky. Hughes says his intent was to deliver 535 letters strapped to the landing gear to give to members of Congress.

Hughes was taken into custody and arrested.

Doug Hughes’ close friend and co-worker, Mike Shanahan, said today that the Ruskin mailman is not a terrorist and did not mean any harm with his protest.

And just hours before Hughes landed in Washington, Hughes’ friend said he called a Secret Service agent to notify him of the possibility of the gyrocopter flight.

“He’s not a suicide bomber, he’s a patriot,” said Shanahan, 65, of Apollo Beach. The whole stunt centers around Hughes’ effort to change campaign finance laws, “or the lack thereof,” according to Shanahan.

About a year ago, Shanahan said, Hughes told him of the idea to deliver letters to legislators by gyrocopter. Not long after, they were both questioned by a Secret Service official in Florida, he said. Wednesday morning, Shanahan said, Hughes called his friend and said he was in Washington, ready to take off.

Just curious, didn’t I see this same flying contraption in the 1986 movie, Howard the Duck?

How in the hell was this allowed to happen and according to reports, authorities were warned in advance that this would happen and still allowed it to occur. HUH? So it was okay, because Hughes was a LEFT-WING nut-job? ABC7 reports that the small single-man gyrocopter that flew through restricted airspace around the National Mall was undetected by NORAD.

Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Mississippi, the top minority member on the House Homeland Security Committee, told CNN he had “deep concern” about Wednesday’s incident and the fact that the Secret Service knew about the pilot.

“Obviously we should have kept a little closer tabs on him, especially within the prohibited airspace,” Thompson said.

“It shows that we still have some areas that are vulnerable and while we can have prohibited airspace it shows that certain kinds of flight patterns are still problematic, and a really bad guy could have caused significant harm if had been armed with explosives or things like that,” he said.

UPDATE II: Doug Hughes wrote on his website, The Democracy Club, As I have informed the authorities, I have no violent inclinations or intent.”

Who thinks that terrorists hell-bent on attacking the United States would say the same thing.
