Missing 19 Year Old NYU Student Asher Vongtau Found Safe Wedged Between Two Buildings for 36 Hours

Bizarre ending to missing persons story …

Friends reported 19 year old NYU student Asher Vongtau missing to school officials Saturday night, November 2, 2013. Friends of the missing student have stated that campus security did not take them serious at first.  As reported at the NY Post, New York University spokesman John Beckman said Vongtau was found by school security Sunday afternoon when one officer heard him moaning from within the tiny space. Vongtau was found trapped in a narrow gap between a dorm and a neighboring parking garage in lower Manhattan. From NBC-NY, firefighters pulled Vongtau from the space between the NYU dorm at 80 Lafayette St. and the neighboring building.  An FDNY official said the space was between 18 inches to 2 feet wide. Asher Vongtau was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.

An NYU student believed missing was actually trapped for up to 36 hours in a tiny gap between his dorm building and a neighboring structure — and was rescued only after his worried pals raised the alarm and rescue workers heard his moans.

“It started out that he was missing, nobody knew where he was. And all of a sudden, they discovered he’d fallen between two buildings,’’ said Habiba Vongtau, the mom of the 19-year-old victim, political-science major Asher Vongtau.

“I’m just completely stunned — he’s actually one of those responsible kids,’’ she told The Post from her Pittsburgh home as she prepared to take a bus to Manhattan to see her son at Bellevue, where he was in serious but stable condition Sunday night.

NYU student rescued after getting wedged between 2 buildings:

It’s unclear how he got stuck between the two buildings, an 18-story NYU dorm and a parking garage, but he was talking to responders who spent over an hour and a half working to free him.

He suffered a fractured head, pelvis and arm and was also dealing with additional injuries to his lungs and spleen.

Friends reported him missing following a fire alarm in the dorm Saturday morning. They called authorities to file a missing persons report, but were also told to check the roof of the building.
