Dean Smith, the former legendary head men’s basketball coach at the University of North Carolina died Saturday night at the age of 83. Smith’s family said in the statement, “We are grateful for all the thoughts and prayers, and appreciate the continued respect for our privacy as arrangements are made available to the public. Thank you.” It is just amazing how many people’s lives this man touched, how innovative he was within the game and just how many of the greatest players this man coached in his career. Dean Smith was a phenomenal coach, a tremendous competitor and a humble man of such incredible character. College basketball has lost a legend.

Dean Smith, Rest in Peace

Former University of North Carolina head men’s basketball coach Dean Smith died Saturday night in Chapel Hill, according to the university. He was 83 years old.

“Coach Dean Smith passed away peacefully the evening of February 7 at his home in Chapel Hill, and surrounded by his wife and five children,” the Smith family said in a statement. “We are grateful for all the thoughts and prayers, and appreciate the continued respect for our privacy as arrangements are made available to the public. Thank you.”

Smith was the head coach of the Tar Heels from 1961 to 1997, retiring as the winningest coach in college basketball. He led the Tar Heels to national championships in 1982 (VIDEO – UNC vs. Georgetown) and 1993 (VIDEO – NC vs. Michigan) , to 13 ACC Tournament titles, 11 Final Fours, and an NIT championship, and directed the United States Olympic Team to a gold medal at the 1976 Summer Games.

ESPN – Dean Smith dies at age of 83.

Dean Smith taught team work, he taught that no one person was bigger than the team. Sounds profound and easy, right? But try doing it when you have the likes of James Worthy, James Perkins, Michael Jordan and a who’s who of Carolina Blue greats. I can remember the joke of the time when Michael Jordan was at Chapel Hill, of Dean Smith’s coaching career: Who  was the only person ever to hold Michael Jordan under 20 points a game. Of course the answer is, Dean Smith. Some would use this as a punch line or something to hold against Smith, I, personally think it is the sign of remarkable character and coaching. The reason was because team meant more than an individual. Passing the ball and playing defense was just as important as scoring. As Smith once told Jordan during his freshman year at UNC, if you cannot pass the ball, you cannot play. Try attempting to do that in today’s college game. Maybe that is what is wrong with college basketball today.

Smith coached the Tar Heels from 1961 to 1997, going 879-254 and retiring as the winningest coach (VIDEO) in college basketball history. North Carolina won NCAA championships in 1982 and 1993 and reached the Final Four 11 times under Smith.

“It’s such a great loss for North Carolina — our state, the University, of course the Tar Heel basketball program, but really the entire basketball world,” said current Tar Heels coach Roy Williams, who spent 10 years as an assistant under Smith. “We lost one of our greatest ambassadors for college basketball for the way in which a program should be run. We lost a man of the highest integrity who did so many things off the court to help make the world a better place to live in.

“He set the standard for loyalty and concern for every one of his players, not just the games won or lost.”

Smith coached Hall of Fame players Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Bob McAdoo and Billy Cunningham, won 13 Atlantic Coast Conference tournament titles and coached the U.S. Olympic team to the gold medal in 1976.

“He was the greatest there ever was on the court but far, far better off the court with people,” Williams said. “His concern for people will be the legacy I will remember most.

Following the announcement of his passing, several of his former players, friends, colleagues and even current players weighed in with their support and memories of the great coach.

UPDATE II: Reaction to the passing of former North Carolina head coach Dean Smith.

North Carolina head coach Roy Williams released a statement on the passing of Smith.

“It’s such a great loss for North Carolina – our state, the University, of course the Tar Heel basketball program, but really the entire basketball world. We lost one of our greatest ambassadors for college basketball for the way in which a program should be run. We lost a man of the highest integrity who did so many things off the court to help make the world a better place to live in.

“He set the standard for loyalty and concern for every one of his players, not just the games won or lost.

“He was the greatest there ever was on the court but far, far better off the court with people. His concern for people will be the legacy I will remember most.

“He was a mentor to so many people; he was my mentor. He gave me a chance but, more importantly, he shared with me his knowledge, which is the greatest gift you can give someone.

“I’m 64 years old and everything I do with our basketball program and the way I deal with the University is driven by my desire to make Coach Smith proud. When I came back to Carolina, the driving force was to make him proud and I still think that today.

“I’d like to say on behalf of all our players and coaches, past and present, that Dean Smith was the perfect picture of what a college basketball coach should have been. We love him and we will miss him.”

UPDATE III: North Carolina coaching icon Dean Smith passes away at 83If there’s a Mount Rushmore of basketball, Dean Smith is on it.”

In recent years, Smith had rarely made public appearances as he battled a progressive neurocognitive disorder that affected his memory. The last time fans saw him in the building that bears his name was during a reunion for the program’s 100th anniversary in 2010. Three years earlier, UNC alum Michael Jordan memorably kissed Smith’s head during a celebration of the school’s 1957 and 1982 national championships.

“Dean Smith is one of the great coaches in the history of sport, not just basketball,” ESPN analyst and Duke alum Jay Bilas told The Fayetteville Observer recently. “I think his legacy goes beyond just the wins and losses. He built the program there and a culture. There’s only been a few programs that have been in that rarefied air, and he set a standard that few have been able to reach, not just on the floor, with basketball, but he showed such a social conscience when it wasn’t easy to do so.

“That’s why his legacy is doing the right thing and standing for something, both in basketball and outside of that. If there’s a Mount Rushmore of basketball, Dean Smith is on it.”

UPDATE IV: Michael Jordan Comments on the death of Dea Smith … He was ‘second father’ to me.

“He was more than a coach,” Jordan said in a statement. “He was my mentor, my teacher, my second father.”

ISIS Claims Jordanian Airstrike Killed 26 Year Old U.S. Hostage Kayla Mueller

ISIS is claiming that 26 year old US hostage Kayla Mueller was killed Friday during when a Jordan fighter plane bombed the building where she was being held near Raqqa. However, it could not be confirmed and the Islamic State has provided no proof of their allegations. Kayla Mueller was kidnapped in August 2013 when she was leaving a hospital run by Spanish Doctors Without Borders in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

The Islamic State claimed that a 26-year-old Arizona woman taken hostage by the group in Syria was killed Friday when a Jordanian fighter plane bombed a building where she was being held.

The claim could not be immediately verified, nor was it clear that Jordanian planes had bombed that location, described as being near Raqqa, the group’s de facto capital. The group released photos showing rubble of a building it claimed had been struck in airstrikes, but no images of the hostage, Kayla Mueller.

“The criminal Crusader coalition aircraft bombarded a site outside the city of ar-Raqqah today at noon while the people were performing the Friday prayer,” the Islamic State said in a statement, according to SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks online postings by Islamist militant groups. “The air assaults were continuous on the same location for more than an hour.”

The statement included Mueller’s phone numbers and other personal information.

The White House has “not at this time seen any evidence that corroborates” the claim.

The White House has “not at this time seen any evidence that corroborates” the claim, said Bernadette Meehan, the spokeswoman for President Barack Obama’s National Security Council. The statement included photos allegedly of the bombed site but no images of Mueller.

We are obviously deeply concerned by these reports,” Meehan said.

Jordan has been launching increased airstrikes against ISIS in response to a video released this week that shows a captive Jordanian pilot being burned to death in a cage.

CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports that a U.S. military officer said the building that ISIS claims the U.S. hostage was in “was a weapons storage facility, not anything that was assessed to be a hostage holding area.”

“We would not strike a facility that was a known or possible hostage facility,” the officer said.

UPDATE I: Jordan: Islamic State claim U.S. hostage killed in airstrike ‘propaganda’.

UPDATE II: Family of U.S. Hostage of Islamic State Says Hopeful She is Still Alive.

The parents of an American humanitarian worker held hostage by Islamic State since August 2013 said on Friday they are hopeful she is still alive, after the group said she was killed in a bombing by Jordanian fighter jets.

Carl and Marsha Mueller, the parents of Kayla Jean Mueller, asked the Islamic State group to contact them privately, according to a statement released by a family representative.

In a message directed to “those in positions of responsibility for holding Kayla,” they said: “You told us that you treated Kayla as your guest, as your guest her safety and well-being remains your responsibility.”

Video Released Online Showing the Beheading Death of Japanese Hostage Kenji Goto by ISIS Terrorists

ISIS savages behead a second Japanese hostage …

A video has been released online that shows 47 year old Kenji Goto being beheaded by an ISIS terrorist with a British accent. The latest beheading video comes less than a week after another Japanese hostage, Haruna Yukawa, was executed.  Japanese officials had been working with Jordan to secure the release of Goto and a Jordanian pilot, Moaz al-Kasasbeh, who was shot down over Syria in December; however, earlier on Saturday negotiations had become deadlocked.

ISIS_Goto beheading

The video comes less than a week after news of the beheading of another Japanese man, Haruna Yukawa.

Mr Goto, 47, is a well-known freelance journalist and film-maker who went to Syria in October, reportedly to try to secure Mr Yukawa’s release.

Japan said it was trying to authenticate the video.

The video, which bears the same symbols as previous IS videos, shows a militant with a British accent beheading Mr Goto.

Japanese government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said Japan was “outraged” by the video, adding that the cabinet was meeting to decide a response to it.

Rupert Wingfield-Hayes: “The Japanese PM has taken a very tough line”

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Japan “would not give in to terrorism”.

He said Japan would work with the international community to bring those responsible for Kenji Goto’s apparent murder to justice.

Japan Times – Islamic State group purportedly releases Goto execution video:

The video — the authenticity of which cannot be confirmed by The Japan Times — shows a masked man speaking in British-accented English standing beside Goto kneeling down on the ground, wearing an orange jumpsuit.

“To the Japanese government. You, like your foolish allies in the satanic coalition, have yet to understand that we, by Allah’s grace, are a large Islamic caliphate with authority and power and an entire army thirsty for your blood,” the man said, brandishing a knife.

“Abe, because of your decision to take part in an unwinnable war, this knife will not only slaughter Kenji but will carry on and also cause carnage wherever your people are found. So let the nightmare for Japan begin.”

Then the man applied the knife to the throat of Goto and the video switched to a still image of what appears to be the beheaded body of Goto.

Brown “was not breathing” when her husband and a friend found her around 10:25 a.m. at a home in a Roswell subdivision, police spokeswoman Lisa Holland said.

“They called 911, started CPR on her, and police arrived first,” the spokeswoman added. “We took over the lifesaving measures until the fire/rescue and an ambulance arrived.”

Brown was then transported to Roswell’s North Fulton Hospital, where she was breathing, according to Holland.

UPDATE I: CNN – Police Say, Whitney Houston’s daughter ‘still alive and breathing’ in hospital.

UPDATE II: Whitney Houston’s Daughter Placed in Medically Induced Coma.

Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, was reportedly placed in a medically induced coma due to swelling of the brain after being found unconscious in a bathtub in her home in Roswell, Ga. on Saturday morning.

The 21-year-old was rushed to the hospital, where doctors stabilized her breathing. She was in the intensive care unit at North Fulton Hospital before being induced.

UPDATE III: Family say her condition ‘doesn’t look good’ and describe how she’s been ‘fighting demons’.

The odds of recovery look grim for Bobbi Kristina Brown, one day after the daughter of music legends Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown was found unconscious face down in a bathtub by her husband.

The 21-year-old was last reported in stable condition in a medical induced coma, but sources close to the family told TMZ that her brain function has ‘significantly diminished’.

‘It doesn’t look good,’ another source told Entertainment Tonight.

That same source revealed to the TV show that it’s ‘no coincidence’ that Bobbi Kristina was found in such tragically similar circumstances as her mother, who was died in a bathtub from an ‘accidental’ drug overdose almost exactly three years ago. Since then Bobbi Kristina’s troubles have been ‘a lot deeper than everyone can see’.

‘We don’t think Bobbi Kristina is going to pull through,’ a source told Hollywood Life.
