Labor Day Poll: Labor Unions Down Sharply in Public Support … Majority Believe that Unions Hurt US Economy
On this Labor Day 2009, check out the following Gallup poll regarding Labor Union approval/disapproval, via Powerline. Only 48% of Americans approved of unions. This represents the first sub-50% approval since Gallup first asked the question in the 1930s. By a 51% to 39% amount, Americans are saying that Unions hurt the general economy.
Gallup finds organized labor taking a significant image hit in the past year. While 66% of Americans continue to believe unions are beneficial to their own members, a slight majority now say unions hurt the nation’s economy. More broadly, fewer than half of Americans — 48%, an all-time low — approve of labor unions, down from 59% a year ago.
Less than half of Americans now approve of Unions. This is really some damning polling for unions.
Labor Union support has fallen to an all time low in American public support. As Michelle Malkin states, Big Labor, Big Trouble.
This is certainly more bad news for Democrats who count on the Union base for voted. As per Byron York, “The numbers do not bode well for Democrats’ desire to pass the Employee Free Choice Act.”
“The numbers do not bode well for Democrats’ desire to pass the Employee Free Choice Act.”, or card-check, which would eliminate the right to a secret ballot in union elections, or even a weaker version of the bill, which would provide for mandatory arbitration in unionization battles.
Powerline has an interesting premise on the sharp drop from last years Presidential election year.
Why would someone favor unions last year but disapprove of them this year? Maybe it has to do with card check or the bailouts, or, more broadly, people being reminded of how union bosses behave when they’re in power

What a joke that Obama would be pandering to the AFL-CIO today while people blame unions for hurting the US economy.

Labor unions are the specific reason that the car companies and other heavy industries in this country have a hard time competing in the world markets.
Work rules and inflated salaries are the result of unions representing workers. The unions were a good idea when they were first formed. Unfortunately, when the union bosses realized how much power they had in the work place and they had access to the dues collected from members, they began to be corrupt and they attracted people without a moral compass. The American people are waking up and they DO NOT like what they are seeing regarding the unions and goverment.
The SEIU for one has sucked CA. dry.(along with illegals) They work along side ACORN to demand more money from taxpayers. All Govt. workers here belong to this thug group.
Here’s the Trick!
In spite of the fact that 95% of the employment and
therefore production and value is in what’s called
‘Small Businesses’, the Obowma crowd is destroying
small business in my opinion to force all workers up
to Big Businesses (Auto, Pharma, Education, Food,
Service Industries, etc.) and thus unionized conditions
in order to completely control them.
This opinion is based on his recent history with the Unions
and the Auto Industry itself. GE seems to be in bed with
Government right now.
You do the extrapolation!
A family member of mine is an apprentice in a labor union. During the presidential election, he was coerced into carrying election information related to Barack Obama door to door. It was considered to be part of his apprenticeship; although, it had nothing to do with his trade. The union was not concerned with how he felt about delivering political material door to door for a man he wasn’t voting for. There is so much we don’t know about the labor unions.
the only union i ever had dealings with got me laid off three times in one year from while all the time promising that they would work hard for us to keep our jobs. complete BS. union is nothing more than organized crime.
I don’t blame the labor unions for big companies greed.. I, for one am in favor of labor unions. My father belonged to a construction union all his adult life.. Greed, ceos and congress ruined the economy. If people are against them, maybe can do like china and open labor camps where they make the cars, etc, have no standards basically.. govt. run health care.. then we would need no unions to represent the blue collar workers.
