Stimulus Sticker Shock: Obama Open to Compromise on $825B Stimulus bill … $900 Billion
Stimulus Package … Deal, or No Deal?
Stimulus package vote ready to go; however, it seems many have issues with this colossal bill that will put our children into debt for years to come. Obama stated that he is ready to make changes to the stimulus bill; can’t we all just get along?
How much of this $825–$900 billion stimulus is just more governmental wasteful spending? What did they say prior to the election about tax and spend liberals?
“The Democrat bill won’t stimulate anything but more government and more debt,” Representative Mike Pence of Indiana, chairman of the Republican conference, said Tuesday. “The slow and wasteful spending in the House Democrat bill is a disservice to millions of Americans who want to see this Congress take immediate action to get this economy moving again.”
On the eve of a key vote, President Barack Obama privately promised Republicans he stands ready to accept changes in the $825 billion economic stimulus legislation, invoked Ronald Reagan to rebut conservative critics and urged lawmakers to “put politics aside” in the interest of creating jobs.
“The American people expect action,” Obama said Tuesday as he shuttled between closed-door meetings with House and Senate Republicans on a trip to the Capitol that blended substance with political symbolism.
John Boehner to GOP: Vote against stimulus. Obama’s Democrats control the House and the Senate and could certainly pass this bill with little to no help from the minority Republican party. However, there also seem to be some fearful Democrats as well. So why does Obama want Republican support? It’s not about can’t we all get a long, it’s about Democrats better not be the only one’s that support a massive stimulus package that fails or when even more $’s need to be requested in the future. It is about the CYA political reelection game.
The $825 billion stimulus package in now creepy closer to $900 billion. Why don’t they just make it an even trillion and call it a day? Will the MSM report on the pork in this stimulus package? Looks like Republicans are accusing Obama of being Bush-like in creating crisis and widespread panic” just like its predecessor in order to get Congress to act expeditiously.
The economic stimulus package proposed by Democratic House leaders totals $825 billion and includes three broad pieces: a $365.6 billion spending measure for such brick-and-mortar projects as highways and bridges; a $180 billion measure to boost jobless benefits and Medicaid, among other things; and a $275 billion tax-relief package, which includes a plan to give a $500 payroll tax holiday to all workers, a proposal from Mr. Obama’s presidential campaign.
Nancy Pelosi’s Contraceptive Measure dropped from Stimulus. Looks like Obama has shown Pelosi who has a greater approval rating.
Controversy over the contraception provision was sparked over the weekend when George Stephanopoulos asked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi about it on ABC’s “This Week.”
“Hundreds of millions of dollars to expand family planning services. How is that stimulus?” asked Stephanopoulos.
“Well, the family planning services reduce cost,” said Pelosi. “They reduce cost. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children’s health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those — one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.”
“So no apologies for that?” asked Stephanopoulos.
“No apologies,” said Pelosi. “No. We have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy. . . .”
UPDATE I: House Passes Stimulus Package 244-188, Republicans Strongly Opposed
The vote was 244-188, with Republicans unanimous in opposition despite Obama’s pleas for bipartisan support.
“This recovery plan will save or create more than three million new jobs over the next few years,” the president said in a written statement released moments after the House voted.
Earlier, Obama declared, “We don’t have a moment to spare” as congressional allies hastened to do his bidding in the face of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

Turn out the lights when there is no more money to print. Total giveaway of taxpayers money. Idiots!
Better start hiding your money under your mattress. They are robbing us blind. Pretty soon we will be turning our whole paychecks over to the government. You think if I quit my job Obama will send me a check? Pay my mortgage & buy my gas? Maybe then I can afford to stay home and home school my kids so they will not have to be brainwashed by the liberal that are running our school systems.
#2 – Then what’s your solution? And please, no “this is what I wouldn’t do” because if you know that then you surely know what to do.
Offer up a solution to stimulate the economy. Let’s hear what you’ve got.
The bill was passed. And apparently an even bigger bill is to be heard in the Senate next week.
Hold onto your seats.
From the article above: “The economic stimulus package proposed by Democratic House leaders totals $825 billion and includes three broad pieces: a $365.6 billion spending measure for such brick-and-mortar projects as highways and bridges;”
This is misleading. According to the WSJ, only about $30 billion (less than 5% of the total) goes to bridges and highway projects. Then “There’s $1 billion for Amtrak, the federal railroad that hasn’t turned a profit in 40 years; $2 billion for child-care subsidies; $50 million for that great engine of job creation, the National Endowment for the Arts; $400 million for global-warming research and another $2.4 billion for carbon-capture demonstration projects. There’s even $650 million on top of the billions already doled out to pay for digital TV conversion coupons.”
The WSJ estimates only about $90 billion out of $825 billion, or about 12 cents of every $1, is for something that can plausibly be considered a growth stimulus.

This stimulus package is nothing but a big old pork barrel spending bill. Our country deserves better. At least all of the House Republicans voted against it, as well as 11 Democrats who crossed party lines and refused to mortgage their great-grandchildren’s futures.
yoyo- There is no solution! USA is broke. Hyper inflation will soon come because we are printing money with nothing behind it. China does not even want to buy anymore paper and we owe them over 1 trillion . We can not spend our way out of this! The answer is I do not know and Congress surely doesn’t. I think we are screwed!
The bill also includes $335 million for sexually transmitted disease education and prevention programs. That should stimulate our economy. Or something.

#3 I would stop spending money like a drunken sailor. I would stop bailing out companies that overspend and mismanaged their money and I would cut taxes so that business’s can afford to pay their employees and so people can afford to feed their families and pay their mortgages and buy gas. I would stop taking money from the working class people to give to the lazy folks that don’t want to work.
I’m sure you will disagree but I don’t really care what you think. I don’t have all the answers but I sure don’t believe that spending, spending, spending is the answer to solving an economic crisis.
Oh, I’m sure you will continue to Blame Bush 4 years from now when Obama hasn’t done anything to help the economy because we all know that your boy can do no wrong. He’s going to save the country that those Republicans destroyed. It’s the same rhetoric over & over because you can’t find anything intelligent to post, just lies.
It might be possible to rescue our economy by spending $825 billion, although I personally think tax cuts would provide more stimulus than spending, but the bill proposed by the Democrats will not help our economy, it will just run up our deficits and lead to inflation. They are not going to spend this money on infrastructure (and our country’s infrastructure is crumbling and will have to be dealt with at some point.) All this bill does is pay back special interest groups and ensure the Democrats keep their base happy. Did I mention the $4.19 billion for “neighborhood stabilization activities” – ACORN anyone? Economic stimulus, my a$$.
Recipe for Pork Soup as served in the
Obama Government Soup Kitchen:
First, take all the fixins from the customers
that come to eat and stir them together in
a huge pot. Add an equal amount of printed
paper money and twice the amount of water
called for. Stir over high heat of the moment
for a few hours, or until the customers are
so hungry they will eat anything. Serve one
bowl to each citizen whilst reserving the Pork
pieces for the cook and his extended family
and friends. Voila! (Note: a 25% gratuity is
automatically added ).
Be sure to come back next week for another
new batch. Oh, and remember to bring
plenty of ‘fixins’.
Pass the Alka Seltzer.
Michelle – You mean the same rhetoric Republicans, and yourself I might ad, have used the last 8 years in blaming Clinton? You mean that same rhetoric from a party that claims to be the party of “personal responsibility”? That rhetoric? Haha.
Here’s your test Michelle (which I’m sure you won’t answer):
The economy went into a near collapse in 2008. A complete shambles so to speak. The former President Bush, a Republican, was at the helm for the last 8 years.
Who’s to fault for today’s current economic woes Michelle?
btw – you do know that 2.6 million people lost their jobs in 2008 (500,000+ in december alone). How many more people do you want to see lose their jobs? Sounds like quite a few.
Up next…the spinally challenged Senate.
rightknight #10 – haha.
Only half a helping for me – I’m still full from Bush’s 150 billion in pork from his stimulus.
I’m not sure if I’ll be able to finish Obama’s 150.
I agree with Michelle!
This is the best description of the election of Obama that I have seen!!!
From a teacher in the Nashville area.
We are worried about “the cow” when it is all about the “Ice Cream”.
The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade this year. The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest. I decided we would have an election for a class president.
We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote.
To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other c lass members. We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have. We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot.
The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids. I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. I had never seen Olivia’s mother.
The day arrived when they were to make their speeches. Jamie went first. He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better place. He ended by promising to do his very best. Every one applauded. He sat down and Olivia came to the podium.
Her speech was concise. She said, “If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream.” She sat down. The class went wild.
“Yes! Yes! We want ice cream.”
She surely would say more. She did not have to. A discussion followed.
How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasn’t sure. Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it. She didn’t know. The class really didn’t care. All they were thinking about was ice cream.
Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a landslide.
Every time Barack Obama opens his mouth he offers ice cream, fifty percent of the people react like nine year olds. They want ice cream.
The other fifty percent know they’re going to have to feed the cow and clean up the mess.
yoyo – you sir are a complete and utter moron. you must work for ACORN who is slated to get BILLIONS of dollars. This is a payoff for the shenanigans during the election.
You are crazy if you think there are not more earmarks in his bill than Bush’s. Besides doofus, the Democratic Congress had more of say in drafting the first stimulus but you don’t remember that because you were probably busy in line waiting for your weekly welfare check! F OFF!
I was proud of the Republicans for not signing this bill.
There is still money in it for STD’s (sexually transmitted disease) and endowment of the Arts.
Will someone please get this crap out of this bill, so we can bring aid to the American people.
We need jobs not birth control. We need jobs not treatment for STD’s. We need jobs not another art ofject to stare at. We need jobs!
How frustrating! We need jobs!
When what little money we have is no longer worth anything because of the over printing of new money, I plan to move in with YoYo Muffintop as I am sure he/she is getting some of the stimulus money. Do you have sleep number bed, YoYo????
#11 YoYo (don’t have the balls to use your real name) who likes to hide behind the computer and try to sound intelligent.
You want to say that Bush caused all this mess with economy all by himself. He had no help. What a crock of b.s. YoYo. The lack of regulation of Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac for one. Loaning money to people who can’t pay it back. The democrats thinking that everybody deserves a home whether they can afford it or not. GREED from the banking industry and businesses like AIG, FORD, GMC, Crysler and all the others looking for a handout. Stop bailing these greedy bastards out. Take responsibility. People need jobs. It’s not just one man’s fault, it’s the whole lot of them….Democrats & Republicans….so it’s just ignorance to keep saying this is Bush’s fault. He doesn’t make the decisions by himself but since you have nothing better to do I’m sure that in 4 years you will still be blaming Bush because we all know that your messiah is perfect and he’s going to fix all the world’s problems and we will all be happy & wealthy.
Here is some advice for you YoYo. Shut the hell up
#15 – who signed Bush’s stimulus package? That would be…Bush. lol. Idiot.
Michelle – I see you are blaming everyone but Bush. Too funny. BTW – why don’t you give us your first and last name so we “know” the real you. Or is your real name “Michelle in MS”?
Strange middle name (in) and last name (MS) “Michelle in MS.” haha
#19 No, actually I blame all of them.
See, I’m not afraid to post my name on here. You on the other hand still wish to be YoYo muffintop. Now that is a strange name
#15 scott: “You are crazy if you think there are not more earmarks in his bill than Bush’s.”
Why don’t you back that up? Or are you talking out your a$$ as usual? My guess…out your a$$ as usual. Lol.
Michelle: Is “in” your maiden name and “MS” your married name? Lol…you use your real name…lol.
Michelle Smith – My parents were hippie carnies
#15 – Let’s tally up the pork Einstein:
2008: $17.2 billion
2007: $13.2 billion
2006: $29 billion
2005: $27.3 billion
2004: $22.9 billion
2003: $22.5 billion
2002: $20.1 billion
2001: $18.5 billion
Total amount of pork signed off on by Republican President Bush: $170.7 billion in pork
2000: $17.7 billion
1999: $12 billion
1998: $13.2 billion
1997: $14.5 billion
1996: $12.5 billion
1995: $10 billion
1994: $7.8 billion
1992: $6.6 billion
Total amount of pork signed off on by Democratic President Clinton: $94.3 billion in pork
1995-2007 the Republicans had a majority in both the House and Senate. In those years $233.4 billion in pork spent.
Bailouts (or whatever you want to call them) not included.
Now you tell me who enjoys the pork more?
But who cares about facts when your so blindly partisan.
yoyo
leave out messing with names, you don’t need it.
you got the facts on your side
YoYo..have you forgotten me???Its all about ME and my question!!!! Now I sound like Casey Anthony…
YoYo you are childish and making an ass out of yourself. You are chicken-shit to come on here and talk crap to people, talk about people and will not post your name. Real coward. Since you can’t answer a question without insulting and name calling, I will refrain from responding to your childish antics.
Good day
Obama is ushering the new American slavery. Be careful what you ask for, get the details. Change is coming America, one nation, one brand of slavery, for those not part of the new special interest group.
I think the bailouts are already over $20 trillion from what I’ve read. No mention of the Obama plan for repayment. Just spend, spend, spend, and no future for generations of Americans – especially if you’re not part of the special interest groups.
How long will the American dark ages last? Has ANY nation ever been a success after ‘spending their way out of bankruptcy’?
Is this another fantasy? Any details on how all this money will get repaid? Who is going to rebuild the nation after it comes crashing down around the White House and Congress?
Where is the savior of our nation? The one who will restore the constitution and all those rights that come with it?
just my opinons
yoyo – doofus…i work for the feds and the earmarks that are coming through in the STIMULUS and in the appropriations soon to follow will be more earmarks then the $170B from Bush. In fact, most of the earmarks for DHHS will come close to surpassing it.
Keep believing this is a “stimulus” package when ALL indications say it’s a SPENDING BILL; actually a SOCIAL ENGINEERING SPENDING BILL! You can’t hide from the facts IN THIS CURRENT HOUSE BILL that was passed….no matter how hard you try to twist them.
Of course, you are a communist and not a real-american…
In case your reading comprehension is that of a 3rd grader…I never said anything about comparing Bush to Clinton but Bush to Obama.
Of course you are a moronClinton is one of the major players behind this economic collapse..no hiding from the facts.
Well, if he was truly interested in “stimulus”, he’s be bailing out the smaller companies and allow these large one to fail as they SHOULD since THEY have already proven they cannot manage their profits. What on God’s green earth makes anyone think the bailout money will be used any more responsibly?
#29 – you haven’t given one fact yet. Yawn…But I appreciate your republican magic 8 ball answers.
I can vision you now: “Magic rightwing 8 ball, even though the new stimulus package isn’t final yet and I have no idea how much pork will be included, will it have more GWB’s? Yes”
lol.
Michelle in MS #26 – strange middle and last name. Never seen anbody with a last name of “MS”.
My name is Michael Smith.
See how easy it was for me as well.
scott – reading comprehension issues? Bush tallied $170 billion in pork not including his “stimulus”. If you were to include Bush’s it might push to $320 billion…but sadly we still don’t know what’s in Bush’s to this day.
Last 16 years:
Republican leadership: $170 billion in pork
Democratic leadership: $93 billion in pork
Both are bad but Republicans are the most wasteful. Sorry to burst your partisan bubble.
BUN – don’t you have to be 80 to own a sleep number bed? No I do not.
There is no instance that I know of where printing money to paper over an economic crisis ever led to anything but hyperinflation and financial ruin. None. From the Wehrmar Republic of Germany where they wound up needing wheelbarrows to carry enough money to market to buy one potato to Mugabe’s 50 Billion note he issued late last year, it’s always ended badly.
I hope the Senate Republicans stand firm against this monstrosity. I hope there’s 1-2 Democrats not afraid to stand up to Harry Reid and vote against it, as 11 Democrats defied Pelosi in the House to vote against it. They’ll be the only Democrats running with safe seats when the voters go to the polls in 2010.
YoYo…”you like me, you really like me!!!” and also “I am 80!!!”
YoYo..just a little joke…my sleep number is 80 or is it my shoe size??? You confuse me sometimes with your cuteness!!!
That actually is a lot of cash! Damn… hope it gets better soon!
