“You don’t suspend your campaign. This doesn’t smell right. This isn’t the way a tested hero behaves.” And he joked: “I think someone’s putting something in his metamucil.”
“He can’t run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second string quarterback, Sara Palin. Where is she?”
“What are you going to do if you’re elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We’ve got a guy like that now!” (David Letterman)
Interesting enough Letterman makes the comment during his dialog that John McCain has canceled his appearance and has suspended his campaign because the economy is exploding. That is met by laughter by the audience. Let’s understand this … the United States is facing a financial crisis that all agree is the worst since the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and The Great Depression and a late night talk show goof makes a joke about it and the audience laughs. BRILLIANT! Letterman gets upset and mocks McCain for canceling on his stupid show vs. dealing with economic matter.
The LEFT just does not get it. It’s not a matter that McCain canceled the Letterman appearance and instead was doing an interview with Katie Couric as Comments from the Left explains. The fact of the matter is that going on a LATE NIGHT COMEDY SHOW WAS NOT APPROPRIATE FOR THE TIMES!
I must have missed the derogatory comments from the LEFT when Barack Obama canceled his appearance on SNL due to Hurricane IKE. The point being is that Obama was correct in not doing a comedy show during such a troubled time. No body mocked or blamed Obama for canceling, as it was the right thing for him to do. So I ask the LEFT, what’s the difference? McCain thought doing a late night talk show was inappropriate and doing a quick news interview before going back to DC was. That’s what I would expect a President to do.

CBS News executives were red- faced yesterday trying to explain how David Letterman used unaired news footage of Sen. John McCain with Katie Couric to embarrass the Republican presidential candidate.
Asked if CBS officials had a problem with Letterman using the internal news feed, a spokeswoman for “The Evening News” refused to address the issue.
But several CBS News executives – who asked not to be identified – said that the stunt did not go down well within the news division.
“If we had done something like that to him, someone around here would end up getting fired,” one said.
News officials found out Letterman was using the internal feed shortly after it showed up on an internal CBS feed carrying the “Late Show” taping.
“They were pretty aggravated,” a CBS News source told The Post.

I wish that presidential candidates would decline to appear on such venues.

WASHINGTON – New home sales tumbled in August to the slowest pace in 17 years, while the average sales price fell by the largest amount on record, demonstrating the depth of the problem that Washington is trying to solve.
The Commerce Department said Thursday that new homes sales fell by 11.5 percent in August to a seasonally adjusted annual sales rate of 460,000 units, the slowest sales pace since January 1991.
It was a much bigger sales decline than the small 1 percent drop that economists had been expecting. The average price of a new home sold in August dropped by a record amount of 11.8 percent to $263,900, compared to the July average of $299,100. The median price was also down, falling 5.5 percent to $221,900.
The big drop in new home sales followed news Wednesday that sales of existing homes were down 2.2 percent in August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.91 million units. Both segments of the market remain under pressure from the steepest housing downturn in decades.
That housing slump has contributed to a record surge in mortgage defaults, leading to billions of dollars in losses by financial firms and spawning a severe credit crisis that is threatening to send the country into a steep recession.
In a nationally televised speech Wednesday night, President Bush said the credit crisis could trigger a “long and painful recession” unless Congress acts quickly to pass a $700 billion bailout plan for the nation’s financial system. Negotiations on that plan were continuing Thursday with expectations that an agreement would be reached soon.
Besides the weak housing report, the government said Thursday that new claims for unemployment benefits shot up last week to the highest level in seven years. Orders to factories for big-ticket manufactured goods fell by a much-bigger-amount than expected amount of 4.5 percent in August. Both indicate the rising pressures facing the economy.
The report on new home sales showed that business was off in every region of the country except the Midwest, which posted a 7.2 percent increase. Sales plunged by 36.1 percent in the West and were down 31.9 percent in the Northeast. Sales fell a more modest 2.1 percent in the South.
Sorry for my haste in posting … what the article says is that NEW CLAIMS for unemployment are at a seven-year high, not the absolute level.
Letterman didn’t seem to understand why Sarah Palin was doing an interview while McCain felt he had to be in Washington. I don’t seem to understand why Letterman doesn’t know the difference between the role of a governor and a U.S. Senator.

Home Sales would be really brisk with the lower prices, except probably upwards of 98% percent of Americans probably have to borrow money short or long term to buy one. Then if inflation affects prices of goods & services (like it gradually has been) it still becomes difficult to balance the cost of living and owning if you pay a mortgage. I’ve always thought it was the people in expensive houses that keep Campbells soup company in business… not much money left over for extravagant steak & seafood dinners i figure.

I think he postponed the debate because his numbers were sinking. What else could he do when America’s #1 issue right now is the economy. To keep his numbers from falling anymore he runs off to Washington acting like he was the one doing everything when in fact the majority of the work had already been done.

The first debate was on foreign policy, his strong suit, he’s not scared and not afraid to debate Obama after he has chased Obama all year to debate. Even Bill Clinton said McCain made the move in Good Faith!

on the economic recovery package … and Obama declines, in order to campaign??? … and, another biased celebrity, David Letterman, who has constantly been making insulting jokes about McCain, while coddling Obama, is upset. I think the facts speak for themselves …
So McCain is taking care of business, this is a serious issue for all of us…something the Democrats should of been watching out for long ago….it’s people like some of you that have contributed to all of our problems…

Taking care of business? Your man said the economy is sound just 2 weeks ago…now it’s on the verge of collapse..and he’s the man who’s taking care of business? I think NOT. REMEMBER THIS? “You’ve heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession”, “We have sort of become a nation of whiners,” he said. “You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline.
This is coming from the mouth of McCain’s TOP financial advisor…Phil Gramm..he also says suck it up….which is what I suggest you do when you vote for McCain.
It does my heart good to see Letterman stiffed. His job is much like that of other actors and actresses: fake, lie, misrepresent, impersonate (rightly and wrongly), exaggerate, take things out of context, and so on. Letterman goes further (as do some other loons) in practicing personal destruction and other vengeful acts. He is making millions of dollars by being a jester. I do think he is simply an unbelievable joke of a person.
mr. bridge, if you had heard the rest of the sentence mccain said, you would have understood that he meant that the basic economy was strong but had serious problems that needed to be taken care of immediately. that was just an example of how msm has treated any candidate in the primaries that ran against the messiah or mccain/palin in this contest. if obama had been vetted by msm as roughly as they’ve treated all the other candidates, he’d be back in chicago licking his wounds and wondering what the hell had happened. obama is an empty suit who has lied his way this far with the help of the media.

dennis – right on brother. It’s amazing the bits and pieces the leftist liberals and the liberal media take from speeches of the Republican candidates and then twists them to make them sound bad. Just like the “God” comment from Palin about our soldiers in Iraq, the same statement that Lincoln and FDR has used in speeches. Of course, Biden thought TV was invented in 1929 and FDR was president then, so…..
It’s typical Democrat speak: Let’s not take what they said completely and literally, but only takes bits and pieces of it and then over-think its to mean something different and demeaning….

Actually that information is on plenty of sites..I think you know where to look, I’ve posted one, but there are a million out there. Are you also saying Phil Gramm never made those comments? Was there something else every media outlet and everyone else in the U.S missed? Also take note in the fact that Phil Gramm…McCains top man served as a lobbyist for UBS which is part of the reason we’re in the mess we’re in today. I wonder how much of that $700B will go into his pocket after this mess is over? Maybe Palin will get as much from this deal as Cheney did from Haliburton and the Iraq war. $34.5M….Not bad Cheney.
God I used to love watching David Letterman back when I was in college in the 80′s. His show was the best.
It is too bad that he has grown to be hateful and spiteful on his show over the last four or five years.

David Letterman made it very clear that he did not mind that Senator McCain did not appear on his show, he praised the Senator’s courage in Vietnam and his wanting to go to Washington, Several times.
What he was angry about, was the fact that the call came late in the day and the fact that Senator Mccain lied to him.
He personally told Letterman he needed to get on a plane and get to Washington now.
Then Senator mcCain did several other shows and did not get to Washington til later that evening.
It was the fact that he was LIED to by the Senator himself that angered him.
Mc Cain chose Dave’s show to announce his candidacy for presidency 2 years ago, so the 2 guys must have some friendship.
I used to like McCain, but I’ve had it with him.
He used to be my hero, but I don’t see the strong leadership skills I once saw. I see a man past his prime. I can’t trust his judgment anymore.
I’m so sorry he did not get elected in 2000.
