Drill Baby Drill … 67% Support Offshore Drilling … End the Federal Ban if Offshore Drilling

Just Drill Baby … Doesn’t it actually seem un-American to have a supply of oil right here in the United States, yet instead refuse to drill. Instead the US makes itself dependent  upon others for that very same oil while paying a ridiculous price per barrel of oil. Why does our government want America to be dependent on foreign countries for its oil supply when they can drill at home? When it comes to oil dependency, there’s no place like home.

Government needs to stop pandering to environmentalists and start caring about the people who voted them into office. If politicians do not think that the high price of gas is not political issue that is affecting millions of voters, they best rethink that notion. The politician who best present their price of gas policy as a winning issue to the voters will win in November.

According to a recent Rasmussen poll, 67% of individuals polled support offshore drilling in the United States and 64% believe that drilling will lower prices at the pump. John McCain called for an end of the federal ban on offshore oil drilling. I think McCain is only saying what most Americans obviously feel. Enough is enough. The high price of oil has reached such levels that it is affecting every aspect of the American economy.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey—conducted before McCain announced his intentions on the issue–finds that 67% of voters believe that drilling should be allowed off the coasts of California, Florida and other states. Only 18% disagree and 15% are undecided. Conservative and moderate voters strongly support this approach, while liberals are more evenly divided (46% of liberals favor drilling, 37% oppose).

Sixty-four percent (64%) of voters believe it is at least somewhat likely that gas prices will go down if offshore oil drilling is allowed, although 27% don’t believe it. Seventy-eight percent (78%) of conservatives say offshore drilling is at least somewhat likely to drive prices down. That view is shared by 57% of moderates and 50% of liberal voters.

John McCain seems to be the only Presidential candidate who hears the will of the people and looks for a way to end high oil prices. In this day and age we can drill for oil in an eco-friendly manner. Caring for the environment does not mean that one should want to destroy the American economy. McCain wishes to drill responsibly. As Red State points out, “the Obama campaign has come up with no proposals whatsoever aimed at increasing the supply of oil in order to alleviate current price pressures.”

“We must embark on a national mission to eliminate our dependence on foreign oil,” McCain told reporters yesterday. In a speech today, he plans to add that “we have untapped oil reserves of at least 21 billion barrels in the United States. But a broad federal moratorium stands in the way of energy exploration and production. . . . It is time for the federal government to lift these restrictions.”

McCain touts energy conservation and oil exploration

Rising oil and gasoline prices have put energy concerns at the center of the contest between McCain and presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama to succeed President George W. Bush after the November election.

You want to know the REAL reason we are at the mercy of foreign (and hostile) oil producing countries? The Republicans. It has been their unswerving paid alligence to Big Oil and Coal and conspiracy to back-burner and trivialize clean and renewable energies like solar and wind every step of the way. It’s a scandal of the first order. We never should have been in this predicament. People have been calling for clean alternatives for decades now but Congress, in bed with Fat Cat CEOs, have done all they could to favor Oil and Coal by giving them huge subsidies and tax breaks while simultaneously roadblocking R&D into renewables. Why? Because de-centralized alternatives would mean no longer being dependent on a large central corporation to provide one’s energy needs. A population with their own solar panels or wind turbines etc. would OWN their energy and not have to continually pay for it and they simply couldn’t have that. Frankly, it’s just insane.

One would think that with the sudden spiking of gas prices recently, though, they would remember their supposed role of looking out for the American people and would realize that we should be investing in renewables – but you’d be wrong.

“Separately, Democrats also failed to get Republican support for a proposal to extend tax breaks for wind, solar and other alternative energy development, and for the promotion of energy efficiency and conservation. The tax breaks have either expired or are scheduled to end this year…. The oil companies could have avoided the tax if they invested the money in alternative energy projects or refinery expansion. It also would have rescinded oil company tax breaks — worth $17 billion over the next 10 years — with the revenue to be used for tax incentives to producers of wind, solar and other alternative energy sources as well as for energy conservation.”

When Bill Clinton tried to make it fairer again the Republicans put the breaks on anything that could lead to a switch away from dirty energy (oil, coal, nuclear).

      SM: WRONG KEEBLER!!!

There has not been an Energy Policy in the US since the 1970′s. ITS ALL THEIR FAULTS!!! Do not blame this on Republicans only. What was Clinton’s reason for pandering to the Saudi’s? Hmm?

I could care less about who is to blame and just have someone fix the problem. Not continue to be part of the problem. Renewable energy is not the only solution. After all, the high and mighty rich hardly wanted wind mills in Nantucket and Marthas Vineyard. Wind energy ,,, spare me the chuckle.

Having been there, “Oil” companies see themselves as energy companies and were putting considerable money into alternative energy projects 30 years ago. However, the Democrats stood in the way of development even then. The Democrats will only support projects where the money goes to their cronies.

This is everyones fault … and its about time Congress is held accountable.

The blame game is over … its time to act.

Are renewable energy sources needed … YES!!

However, so is drilling and oil in this country. We are not going to just g cold turkey on oil tomorrow.

The American people deserve their Govt to do something. This is turning into an economic disaster all in the name of waco-enviromentalists.

USE SOME COMMON SENSE and repsonsibly drill

      Byron,

Alternative energy has been around for at least four decades. If it was economicaly feasible it would have flourished in the private sector without govt. help. Why should the govt. spend tax money on something that the private sector can’t make work? Waste tax payers money for everyone to complain about?

Conspiracy? If by your logic the govt. should be making secret deals with alternative energy companies behind our back if it is so profitable.

Oil companies show the biggest profit because they are the biggest businesses in the world, period. should they work for free? Either “big oil” gets the tax breaks they need to operate or we the people pay more gas tax, what would you rather have?

US govt. can’t control Saudi oil production. It’s about supply and demand. I still see people driving to the corner store to pick up a pack of cigerettes, gas prices can’t be all that bad.

Republicans can’t win. When they do their job as they should by changing policy at the peoples beguests, people start shouting conspiricy while Dems shout “flip flop”.

      Unbelievable

    5. Murph on June 18th, 2008 6:31 am

Congress is bought and paid for. Democrats are paid by the enviromentalists PACS and the Republicans are bought off by the oil PACS and it’s the perfect storm of no energy for the USA. This does not effect our elected officials because they do not pay for gas or a car and most are so rich that it does not effect them. Our Congress doesn’t live in a real world and a good example was when Hillary was trying to pour coffee at a store and she could not do it. This lady who is going to save us from the world could not get her own cup of coffee poured. Congress will not do anything but line there pockets and lie to us about problems they have created!
God help us! We need term limits for Congress!

I have real issues with giving Saudi’s our money, then they turn and support terrorist against us.

It has been 30 years since a new refinery has been erected in the US. 30 years of monies to the Saudis. Who now will turn the oil faucet and give us more oil.

Drill in the US, give jobs to our citizens so that money will be spent and taxed here.

The Compressed Air Car developed by Motor Development International (MDI) Founder Guy Negre might be the best thing to have happened to the motor engine in years.

The $12,700 CityCAT, one of the planned Air Car models, can hit 68 mph and has a range of 125 miles. It will take only a few minutes for the CityCAT to refuel at gas stations equipped with custom air compressor units. MDI says it should cost only around $2 to fill the car up with 340 liters of air!

The Air Car will be starting production relatively soon, thanks to India’s TATA Motors. Forget corn! There’s fuel, there’s renewable fuel, and then there’s user-renewable fuel! What can be better than air?

#4 Rusty – “Republicans can’t win. When they do their job as they should by changing policy at the peoples beguests, people start shouting conspiricy while Dems shout “flip flop”. ”

I think it has more to do with the fact that McCain 45 days ago (when gas prices/public discontent was the same as now) stated he was anti-drilling/anti-federal control to now pro-drilling/pro federal control. On the surface (changing from a dem stance to a repub stance) it appears to be a campaign ploy.

on a side note – why in the hell are we letting politicians figure this one out? This might sound dumb, but can’t we put 200 of the USA’s smartest minds in a room and let them figure it out and then present it to the public?

    12. katablog.com on June 18th, 2008 8:24 pm

Byron: If it were true that there were alternative energies that would significantly reduce our dependence on oil and that it’s all the Republicans fault – then do tell why Nancy Pelosi and team haven’t quickly implemented these “solutions” since they took power in April 2006.

Next if these alternative energies are so affective, do tell us why Al Gore implemented these energies in his huge home and managed to INCREASE his carbon footprint and use of energy by 10%!

A windmill ain’t gonna power a car. Neither with a nuclear power plant. Yes, I do believe the car manufacturers could make more fuel efficient cars – and I do believe they should.

While I believe drilling IS the answer, I don’t think it’s the total answer. I do believe we need to look at alternative sources that make sense (not soybeans and corn) and implement them – including fuel efficient cars.

It is totally ridiculous to sit on 18 billion barrels of oil and pay $140 a barrel. The second we put a drill bit into the ground, the speculators will start backing off and the Saudis and others will start pumping more oil – knowing their time to sell high priced oil is limited.

    13. katablog.com on June 18th, 2008 8:33 pm

Should have added one more thing:

There is no way under God’s Green Earth that the Dimocrats will now support drilling for the same reasons they refuse to support the war. You see those in power are more concerned about winning an election and making the other party look bad than doing what is best for the American people.

This is why the entire congress needs to be wiped out. Republicans, Democrats, Independents and everyone else needs to get really ticked off and demand that Congress begin to actually represent us – We the People.

    14. john staton on June 19th, 2008 6:45 am

What is operative here is that any change no matter how clean will face very strong forces against it. Geothermal, Nuke, Wind, Tide, Oil Shale, Oil and Gas, anything. I have seen, believe me!!!JS

    15. Murph on June 19th, 2008 8:22 am

Conress will do nothing but get richer! They do not care what happens as long as the PAC’s line there pockets and they get re-elected! Congress will do nothing but talk! American people are screwed! Does anyone have any faith that our elected leaders will do anything for the country’s benifit. Please tell me I am wrong!!
