RSSRetired Teacher John Corcoran Says He Was Illiterate Until Age 48
The irony is not lost in the following story and the education system in the US. He obviously did not know how to spell edumacation, or read and write but did he know arithmetic
John Corcoran, a retired school teacher who taught high school for 17 years without being able to read, write or spell. A teacher who cheated his way into a position of teaching children. Great!!!
For 17 years Corcoran taught high school for the Oceanside School District. Relying on teacher’s assistants for help and oral lesson plans, he said he did a great job at teaching his students.
“What I did was I created an oral and visual environment. There wasn’t the written word in there. I always had two or three teacher’s assistants in each class to do board work or read the bulletin,” said Corcoran.
In retrospect, Corcoran said, his deceit took him a long time to accept.

Ah, well … as long as you keep up your image, what difference does it make what you know?
A serious question, though … given the movement to promote ‘democracy’ in the school system (I’ve read that student ratings of their teachers are taking on more and more importance … maybe not in high school, but certainly in college … setting aside the question whether students are capable of giving an informed response) …
Who knows but what he might have come to be looked on as the head of the school?
Of all bureaucracies, the education one probably is the worst. And the arrogant self-serving morality it adopts (“You want to cut education spending? You want to give school choice? Don’t you want what’s best for the kids?”) has in effect placed it beyond public accountability.
